Well, here it is, the first beta of the first iApps release!

iLaunch is a finger-friendly applications launcher for Windows Mobile PocketPC phones. It's easily skinnable, intuitive, and could be used instead of the standard Windows Mobile Start Menu.

It is based on iContact (supbro version) source code, available here:

iContact is used as a "scrollable framework" for applications that will have the same look and feel: the same iContact original skins will be included by default: "default" and "iPhone". The "default" skin will have a diamond-like look and feel, and the "iphone" skin will be designed to be as similar to the iPhone look as possible.
iLaunch settings can be found in the Windows Mobile system settings menu. A soft reboot may be required after installing iLaunch before the iLaunch settings icon will appear in the menu.

So iLaunch gives you 5 tabs that can be linked to 5 folders under "Windows\Start Menu"
By default the folders (but you can rename or change them) are:
- Office Mobile
- Multimedia
- Programs
- Connections
- System Tools
Each tab shows a scrollable list of links that you can use to start applications.
You can also use StartButton to replace the default Start Menu with iLaunch:

iLaunch tabs can be customized with the language file located in "program files\iLaunch".
By default you find here "english.lng", which can be used a base for transaltions
There is a "+" button in the top right side, near the title of the tab:
as for now it does nothing, but the code to make it work will be ready for the next beta!

Quick Start

iLaunch is based on tabs: each tab gets its linked programs from a folder on the device.
Please remember also that this is the first beta, so there are some things that will be better in the next releases
As for now:
1. You have to create up to 5 folders in your "\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"
A quick way to do this is using the cab linked above, but you can do it as you want.
2. You have to copy links to programs/applications inside the created folders.
A very handy tool to do this is Total Commander, but you can do it with any file manager.
3. Then you need to "update" the tab: if you click on the tab icon (while the tab is already selected) the
list of links is updated.
4. It is possible to change the name of the folders editing the english.lng file.

Installed it and hooked it right away to my start button. Only files in the "multimedia" category show up. Other categories are all empty. Do i have to add them manually?

wow! it's very fast! great project! good work!

Nice app! Working smoothly on a WVGA Toshiba G900. I noticed just one bug so far (and probably a known one) - the program doesn't adapt to landscape. It's just displayed in a 640x640 square after rotating screen (besides that, works fine). After going back to portrait, it looks as it should.
As for feature requests/proposals:
* some basic task manager would be nice to have (browsing, switching and closing tasks - like QuickMenu)
* command line parameters to launch the program with different tabs open (especially the task manager tab, if implemented) should be useful
* this one might be a long shot but hey, who knows - maybe someone will like it? So, how about having one tab with nothing but a text field in it. As you type, a list of applications and applets from entire start menu containing the typed string in their name is displayed below the textfield. So typing "Wi" would display a list with "Wi-Fi" control panel applet, "Wireless manager" and "Windows media player". Typing in "Not" would cause "Notepad", "New Note" and "OneNote Mobile" to pop up. Something like a PC program Launchy. It shouldn't be much harder to implement than an alphabetical list of all apps in the start menu, but much easier to navigate. And easier still if the SIP popped up when you open this tab (preferably configurable behavior - some devices have a hardware keyboard after all).
Anyway, i hope this app grows into a real Start Menu, or even better - QuickMenu replacement

Is that folder creation cab absolutly necessary for use with this app, or was that specifically in syd's situation?

Thanks for the info: we don't have a WVGA device for testing but there should be a WVGA emulator in WM 6.1 Sdk, we just need to donwload it

I don't think this could work without a real full-size hardware keyboard, but we'll think about it!

I'm getting an issue on my Omnia where i have to spam any buttons on the multiple times before it registers.
It most defintely isn't lag as when i press it once and leave it for 5 mins it still doesn’t changes tabs, but spamming it like 3 times in a second changes to another tab.

Ok you know how at the very bottom, there's the bar with multiple icons, that leads to the applications, multimedia, office mobile etc tabs?
Those buttons for some weird reason only respond on my omnia with a minimum of two taps, that is i have to tap the same button twice or more in a second for it to respond and change to the said tab.
All the tabs except for the office mobile tabs are blank as well, so i doubt its trying to load the tab contents.

This is very strange, unfortunately I don't have an Omnia to test, but I've never seen this problem before

The folder creation cab is not necessary, it is just a quick way to create some folders in the right place!
But you have to create some folders (and then put some links inside them) which will be linked to iLaunch's tabs: you can do this in the way you prefer - personally I use Total Commander

INSTALLATION

Uninstall any version older than 2.1 before you proceed!
After removing old version, please restart the device and remove FingerKeyb folder before proceeding!
1. Run the CAB file from your device. Installation on device memory is recommended!
2. After installation, a Configuration utility will open. Here you can customize the layouts, choose color schemes and configure various options of FingerKeyboard 2.
3. Click on OK and soft-reset the device.
4. Select FingerKeyb from the SIP list (By clicking on the small arrow next to the keyboard icon. FingerKeyb should be listed under "Other input options")
Additional Notes

HELP AND FAQ - Frequently asked questions
Read this whole text before using the FingerKeyboard or asking for help! If your question is already answered in FAQ it will be ignored. Don't be lazy!
What version should I install on my XYZ device? / What is WVGA, WQVGA, VGA and QVGA?
To successfully install Fingerkeyboard on your device, you need to pick the correct version for your phone. For example, let's say you want to find out what resolution Samsung Omnia has. Type "Samsung Omnia review" into Google, and among the first few results usually you'll get the most popular review sites listed. Reviews always contain resolution information, so we easily find out that Samsung Omnia has a 400x240 pixels resolution. That means you should install FingerKeyboard WQVGA cab.
Here's the list of supported resolutions for FingerKeyboard, with their standard abbreviations:
WVGA - 800x480
WQVGA - 400x240
VGA - 640x480
QVGA - 320x240

How can i uninstall FingerKeyboard?
Go to Settings > System > Remove programs.
It is listed as "Exidler's FingerKeyboard"
Why does FingerKeyboard look differently on my device then on the screenshots?
There can be some small differences between the screenshots and what you see on your screen. The reason for this is that different layouts can have different features, graphic elements or button layouts. We consider English layout to be the "standard" layout, with best combination of button size and positions.
How can I type those special characters that appear above normal characters?
Press and hold a key.
How to switch to full CAPS?
Press and hold the shift button.
Spacebar
If you press and hold spacebar button it will write a dot followed by a space.
How to use text selection?
Switch to full CAPS mode and then use arrow buttons to select text.
How to use cut / copy / paste / undo?
Switch to full CAPS mode, select the text you want to cut or copy, and press and hold ^c or ^x characters. Then press and hold ^v to paste. On some layouts these are named "cut", "copy" and "pst". Same thing with "undo" option - you can use "undo" at any moment, and it will take you back for unlimited number of steps.
Where is that Config tool you mention?
After you install FingerKeyboard, go to Start > Programs > Finger Keyboard.
How can I switch to numeric keyboard?
Press 123 button. If your layout does not have dedicated 123 button, press Shift and 123 will appear on your Language toggle button. Behavior of Language toggle button can be customized in Configuration tool.
How can I change a color scheme of the keyboard?
Config tool > Main > Color scheme: select which ever you like and press OK or Apply.
How can I select language layouts?
Config tool > Main: you will see a list of all language layouts you have in your FingerKeyboard folder. Put a tick next to the layouts you want to use and press OK or Apply. We also advise you to physically delete layouts you don't want to use from oyur device (Program files / FingerKeyb / Skins). This will make Config tool start up a little bit faster and use less memory.
What are all those Backspace options in Config tool?
Behavior of Backspace key can be customized to suit your needs. You can separately control what will Backspace do on short click and long press, as well as how it will behave in small caps or caps lock mode.
How to minimize or turn off the keyboard?
Short press the keyboard toggle button (the one with small keyboard or switch sign on it). Long press on this button will turn off FingerKeyboard and switch to default HTC keyboard.
How to disable click sound?
Run FingerKeyboard Config tool. Under "Options" tab you will find a "Press sound" box. Here you can select from several different click sounds, all of which have "quiet" and "loud" versions. This is useful if you want a subtle click sound, but don't want to lower the volume for the whole System. There is also a "no sound option".
How can I get vibration feedback?
Config tool > Options tab > Press vibrate. Here you can select how long you want the vibration feedback to last. Minimum of 20ms will get you a barely noticeable vibration effect, while 80ms will be very strong.
How can I control the key-press delay? / What is "Hold time" / Can I make the keys repeat on press+hold?
"Hold time" option in Config tool is a cool option you can use to control how long it will be needed for a key to be continuously pressed before it writes a letter or performs an action. This part of the "Hold time" function is controlled with numbers in the first box. The second box controls how long will it take for a key to be continuously pressed before it starts repeating itself. So, if you put 500ms in the first box, and 200ms in the second box, that means you will have to press a key for 500ms before it performs it's "long press" action, and 200ms more before it starts repeating that function. If you hold the key even longer, it will then gradually accelerate.
Can I hide / show Windows menu bars?
Yes, go to Config tool and under "Options" tab select how you want the keyboard to display in Portrait and Landscape mode. We suggest selecting "Show bar" for portrait, and "Hide bar" for landscape.
I want the pop-up images to stay longer on screen. How can I do this?
In Config tool, Options tab, there is a "Popup time" box. Here you can select how long will the pop-up image stay on screen after a key has been pressed. If you set pop-up time to 1500ms, this means the pop-up image will stay on screen for 1.5 seconds, or until next key is pressed. Pop-up image delay affects ONLY the normal character keys (A,B,C,D etc). Special action keys, such as Shift, Space, Backspace etc. have default short time and will not stay on your screen. This is done to avoid action keys images covering large areas of the screen with their larger pop-up images.
What are Smiles / Shortcuts?
This is a feature that no other keyboard has. It allows you to control what any of the several predefined actions keys will do when you press and hold them. Almost all layouts have these special actions included (between 7 and 11 actions on most of the layouts). You can control what will show up on a key when you open the keyboard, as well as what that key will write when you press+hold it. For example, you can type into "Key text" box "info" and into "Action text" you could type "John Smith, gsm:00123456789, e-mail: [email protected]". Or maybe your favorite web address. Or your signature. Or your wife's name. Or your lover's name for all we care The possibilities are endless! You can do the same thing for smiles - if you don't like the default ones, use your own, or something else!
A special key I need is missing / Can I customize smiles / Can I change shortcuts?
If there's a key missing in your language layout, you can easily add it yourself by using either Smiles or Shortcuts tab in Config tool. Simply type the missing key into two of the horizontal boxes and the key will appear when you long press a button that has that Smiles / Shortcut action.
Why does XYZ language layout have only a few smiles / shortcuts buttons?
Some language layouts have very high demands regarding the number of characters they need to occupy. Because of this there are a few language layouts that may have a smaller number of smiles / shortcuts spaces reserved. We have tried to include as many as possible, believe us!
How can I make FingerKeyboard a default keyboard? / How can I keep FingerKeyboard as default keyboard even after reset?
You can use a small program called SIP Change. Look it up on XDA-developers.com forum, and remember to set delay to 40-50 seconds.
"Where is XYZ language layout? Why is it not included!?"
If you want a certain language layout, first check FingerKeyboard2.1 thread on XDA-developers.com forum if someone maybe already made an additional layout and posted it there. If not, the best thing you can do is to make your own layout and share it with other people. If your layout is good, we'll probably include it in next version. Please do not spam us with "I WANT THIS LANGUAGE!!!" messages. All language layouts depend exclusively on the community to produce them. If no one can't be bothered to make your language layout, we can't really help you.
Editing instructions:
You can use the existing layouts to make it custom layouts! The easiest way is to open one of the layout skin txt files and replace the existing characters with your own. Experiment a bit, and you will soon get the hang of it. Same applies if you want to make your own skin - edit the included bitmaps, and change the appropriate lines in txt files. Everything you want to know about FingerKeyboard actions, layouts, colors and resolutions is explained in "doc-about-skin.txt" that is located in the root of the FingerKeyb folder. Read it first before asking for help!

XT9 & TEXT SUGGESTION:
This keyboard does not support T9. However, there is an option to enable standard Windows Mobile word suggestion, as well as SMS contact name suggestion. There are two ways to do this.
First way is to use the FingerKeyboard Config tool and select what you want to use (Word / SMS suggestion, or both). SMS suggestions will work normally, but for WinMo word suggestion to function, you will need to switch to HTC default keyboard and manually turn on XT9 on the little T9 switch. After that, you can reload FingerKeyboard and everything will work normally. This can be a good way for people who like to use T9 on other keyboards, but also want to use FingerKeyboard without T9. This approach also makes it possible to use new HTC style suggestion windows (the ones with small arrows on each side, where you can flip between names / words).
To avoid messing around with XT9 switch on HTC keyboard you can simply globally disable XT9 across the whole system. That means that T9 will not work even on system keyboards that have T9 support, but SMS / Word suggestions will both work. This will disable the HTC style suggestion windows, and use the default WinMo style (opens a simple white window with list of suggested words or names). The patch file which disables XT9 globally is attached in this post. This patch can be uninstalled. If you already have it installed, you do not have to remove it or reinstall it. Also, please note that when you install this patch, you will not be able to select SMS /Word options in FingerKeyb config tool - they will always be grayed out.

It might be best to install the FingerKeyb cab and test it first. You can always globally disable XT9 later on if you decide so.
There is a known bug with Word suggestion, that has been almost fully fixed in this version of FingerKeyboard. The bug manifests itself like this:
- if you have "Text word suggestion" turned on, and you type an SMS message, the "home" and "end" buttons will not work while the word suggestion window is open on the screen. If you select a word, those keys will work normally. Unfortunately, this isn't our fault - it's actually a bug in Word suggestion app.​

Looks fantastic- ill give feedback after testing. What i like so far, even without trying is that this is what im looking for in terms of apps for my WM fone. As Msoft has failed completely in this regard, it is up to us to create these type of apps and to make sure that they are usable and well documented. Unfortunately, many apps are half-assed (not an insult to their creators- it is simply not possible for an individual or a small group of people to do what the entire team at apple or HTC does) so often times, they can cause more problems then they solve as bugs upon bugs are discovered. What we need is comprehensive apps that are presented in an organized manner like this. An example is the FAQ section which is great (cuts down clutter- a thread does not need to be 200 pages long) because we all hate those who ask questions over and over again that have been already asked and most of the time- even answered. Way to go!
Edit: Works smoothly. Good customization options. Addresses major flaws in most other keyboards (example- .com and www. shortcuts). No bugs discovered yet. Would like to see directional arrows at bottom option in customization menu as we all hate the useless dpad on our Fuzes. So far...highly recommended!!

i currently have version 0.17 beta, and there's no uninstall option. how do i uninstall this before installing 2.1.1 ?

I had no uninstall option either. I just installed the newest version, it would not work. So I uninstalled the new version, deleted the finger folder, soft reset, reinstalled, soft reset and it works fine. I have a Diamond as well.

to uninstall versions that were installed manually:
click on register, and then choose NO from the popup...after that delete the whole fingerkeyboard folder
whatever you do, do NOT install this over another...
edit:Glossy edition will be adjusted too..but it will take a while as i have to finish other stuff first

Thank you for a simple, but very nice finger friendly app. I like the color and font size on my VGA (Fuze) screen. And I appreciate the way TypeNotes "asks" before overwriting or deleting a note. I posted this info at Fuze Mobility but figured it would not hurt to add it here also.
I was sort of hoping that the app could open existing txt files (if I loaded them in TypeNote's default directory) but TypeNote can’t see the files. I was able to open a TypeNote txt file using PocketNotepad so….
-Create a new file in TypeNote using the same name as your existing txt file. Add one or two characters to the body just in case and save.
-Cut or copy your existing txt file into the \Program Files\TypeNote\Notes folder and overwrite the file you just created in the above step.
-You can now view and edit your existing txt file.
FYI: I tried adding my existing file and file name to the NoteList.txt file (located inside the TypeNote directory) but that did not work. The above steps work fine.
I keep network settings and other trivia in txt files on my desktop and like to have copies with me. The PocketNotepad and TC interfaces are not that friendly for viewing or editing.
One interesting note. When finger scrolling through a note it is very difficult (I couldn’t do it) to accidently highlight text, unless the SIP is opened. Don’t know how this works (something to do with sensitivity) but it is a very nice feature and would love to see it implemented in other apps. With a stylus I could highlight text with the SIP closed or open.
Also, Sensor Scroll works (you have to setup in SS Settings) and TypeNote works fine loaded to the storage card.

Interesting. I just checked on my Fuze and the time was 20 minutes behind; Fuze Home Screen 5:29 (17:29) and TypeNote 17:09. Not the end of the world, but a bit puzzling.

It looks like regardless of what time it is, the minutes are always :09. The hour is correct (24hr). Like previously stated, no big deal.

It should open the file if you add it to the notes-folder and notelist.txt. For example if the file is called Network.txt.. copy it to the Notes folder, and add Network (without .txt) to the Notelist.txt file.
Will see what i can do about the scrolling thing..
And TypeNote should work wherever you put it actually Its coded in a way that it "sees" where it is. So feel free to move it where you want, just remember to fix the shortcut.

OK, I just tried copying a file into the folder and notelist.txt and this time it worked. I may have added .txt to the end of the filename (unlikely) the first time or maybe I just typed the filename wrong. Glad to see it works either way.
Should have clarified scrolling. Flick/finger scrolling works beautifully. I was referring to the scroll wheel on my Fuze. Adding TypeNote to SensorScroll (an app to facilitate scrolling) settings allows the scroll wheel to work. Regarding finger scrolling, after some additional testing I guess you can inadvertently select text if you keep your finger in one place for too long. But if you flick quickly or even move your finger slowly but not leave it in one place, text will not be selected which is a very good thing. I assume there is some time delay working there. Finger apps are great but too many of them allow your fingers to wreak havoc by selecting things unintentionally.
Whenever I test an app, I always check if it will run from the storage card. Some apps will load to main memory regardless of your selection and others will refuse to run if loaded to a storage card. Just a little added info.

Good job, simple and finger friendly.. Some nice things that could be added are:
- Auto-import of a directory containing .txt files. This would help in sync'ing the notes with a computer through Mobile Device Center/Activesync.
- Search
- Categories/folders
- A desktop version of the same app.
I currently use Tombo ( http://tombo.sourceforge.jp/En/ ) which is NOT very finger friendly, but has all these niceties and also support encryption of individual notes. Since it is open source, it might be helpful perusing its source code.

Backup/sync to desktop is easy: Activesync will do it for you.
Tombo (for link see two posts above) will work as the desktop-app (it has both WinMob and Windows versions).

Already flashed MIUI ROM? OK, pick up your phone now, let’s start our happy journey of MIUI ROM.
The first step: selecting apps
Various apps will greatly enrich your cell phone, so firstly let’s select the apps to your taste. Use the Android Market and download what you would like. If you are using a backup app and restoring apps from a previous ROM, only restore the apps and not the data. Otherwise that will create a lot of force close issues.
Tip: How to copy files from the computer to the phone? First connect your phone to your computer via data cable, pull down the notification panel from the top of the phone, click “USB connected”, and then click "Turn on USB storage”.
After copying, do not forget to select the option of “Turn off USB storage”, otherwise "File Manager” in the phone will not be able to find the sd card, as it is being occupied by the computer.
Now I have a lot of apps, how to put them in order?
All apps successfully installed are listed on the desktop, however, they may not be in the order you want, how to put them in order?
Long press an app icon and then you may move it freely. When it is moved to the screen border, the screen will automatically switch to the next screen.
How to add a screen? Use two fingers to pinch on the desktop to enter screen thumbnail mode. Then you may add or delete screens.
How to delete an app? Long press the app icon you want to delete, drag it on top of the trash box and click OK to delete it.
The second step: let's make your phone different.
A phone without style is nothing remarkable, so let’s make your phone different!
Changing wallpaper: Click Menu button on the desktop, select “Change Wallpaper” to replace the wallpaper. In addition to the existing wallpaper in the phone, thousands of pieces of wallpaper are also available online.
Changing theme: Themes make great changes to your interface style. Click “Theme Manager” on the desktop to select the theme you like. Also, more online themes are available online.
Selecting ringtones and more: click “Settings” on the desktop to set call and notification ringtones. In “Personalization” under “Personal” tab, you may find more options.
The third step: it’s time for some advanced techniques!
Well, you are no longer a beginner now, so let’s learn some advanced techniques.
Adding widgets on the desktop: press the Menu button on the desktop, select "Edit Mode", and then click the icon on the upper right corner to access the interface of “Add Widgets”. Choose your favorite widget on the top, and then drag it to the screen below.
Using folders to manage desktop apps: in the interface of “Add Widgets”, drag [Folder] to the desktop. You may drag multiple apps into folders to classify them. After opening the folder, you may click the edit icon in the upper left corner to rename the folder.
Using toggles panel to improve efficiency: drag the notification panel down from the top, click "Toggles" to go to the toggles panel (It goes to the toggles panel in default of notice.) On the panel are listed the most commonly used toggles, you may click to quickly enable or disable a toggle. Long press on the icon will launch the settings for that icon.
Guest mode: enable the “Guest Mode” toggle in the panel, and your calls and text messages logs will be hidden, and all installed applications cannot be removed. You may have a try when you need to show your phone to guests or children.
Importing contacts or binding accounts: you may use some apps to import a batch of contacts, or bind Google account directly in "Settings"> "Personal"> "Accounts & Sync Settings" to sync contacts at any time.
How to print screens? Press "Menu" key and "Volume Down" key at the same time to print a screen. The printed image is saved in the directory of MIUI in the SD card.
How to copy files from the computer without using the data cable? In case of a Wi-Fi connection, enter “File Manager” on the desktop, select the tab of "Remote Administration" to start the service, and then you will get an address. Enter the given address on the computer, then you may copy files without using a data cable!

IP Calling : . How to set IP dialing?
MIUI ROM can add an IP prefix for the called number in a strange land. You may set it in Settings>Common>Calls.
You may also long press the contact item before dialing, and choose “Make IP calls” in the pop-up menu.
Reject Call : When you are not available to answer the phone, you may slide up the panel to reject the call and to send a message to the caller at the same time.
Custom Ringtones : . How to set custom ringtones?
Put media files into the Media/Audio/ringtones directory in the SD card, (If there is none of this directory, please create one manually) and then select in Sounds in Settings.
Note: there are three directories under Audio, corresponding to the following tones:
notifications--notification ringtones
ringtones--incoming call ringtones
alarms--alarming ringtones
Supported formats: MP3, WMA, WAV, Midi, etc.
Important SMS : As for those important messages you want to add to your favorites, you may long press the message in the pop-up menu and select "Favorites". You may switch to "Favorites" tab in the main SMS interface to view collected messages.
Quick Delete SMS : How to quickly delete items?

The Leather Theme that came out does a great job of taking care of that issues. Otherwise you can turn on compatibility mode for that specific app and that helps.

The NSTG turns 10! Time for a makeover.

The impetus for my project was the purchase of a (surprise!) late production line NSTG with a flawless light-dispersing layer. And I thought...this deserves a rethink. Thanks to @Renate for help with the status bar background color and clock color. The rest is a combination of DesktopVisualizer, Simi Folder, Tasker apps (only 2), Minimalistic Text, a little judicious wallpaper design, and fooling with the framework-res.apk.

It's a real thing. I've been using it for a few weeks, tracking down small issues. Think I've got them all. But...it's just ADW launcher dressed up with some nice features. The underlying B&N system remains.

Mmm....not sure. I actually have not tried applying this to a second device. I'm sure I can do it, but there are a lot of moving parts. I need to try and simplify the process. I didn't actually think anyone else would be interested!
Probably some kind of of gradually increasing functions, like just the status bar change (easy). That's just an update of the framework-res.apk using CWM. Then add in the smart "reading now" button (without the bookcover widget). That's just a pair of apps in which I can disable all the widget stuff.
That, I think, would be doable by anyone. The rest really is window dressing. It suits me, but not all the elements may suit others. I need to look at the portability of the widgets. If that were possible it would simplify things a lot.
Edit: Well, some good news for a change. The widgets can be "exported" in a file and then read into a different device. So for people who want to duplicate any of the widgets they see on my screen (or use them as starting points), the path is smoother.
Anyway, that's my next "job".

Really good stuff. Wish I had another NST to experiment on, it's crazy what you can still do with them.

Not to my knowledge. I've only ever read about the change in background color and beefing up of the dispersing layer in one place. They could have made it up, but there is no doubt about background "white" when I line up an NST, my new NSTG, and my older NSTG. There's a clear progression to a darker background.
Now there could simply be something wrong with my old NSTG that makes the background so dingy, but I don't think so.

For this reason my original instructions were very incremental and complex. I now think that was a bad idea.
I recently discovered a way to create CWM flashable zips of installed and configured apps. I thought this might vastly simplify recreating the "new UI" look. I think I was right. I also decided that it was better to install everything at first and then subtract (uninstall) stuff that you don't want, seeing as how there are so many moving pieces and lots of dependencies. You can decide if I was right.
STAGING
Note: you need a good file manager app on your device and may also need some kind of working gallery app (like QuickPic), depending on whether the activity picker recognizes your file manager app fully. I was able to get along with ES File Explorer.
1. Make a CWM card (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...od-based-recovery-fixed-backup-issue.1360994/), using either of the two SD card versions.
2. Download framework_newUI_CWM.zip and NST_newUI_CWM.zip. Copy these files onto the CWM card you have made.

Changes to the framework-res.apk were needed to change the status bar to white and update the icons. This version also includes a few minor changes to address problems with invisible text in some apps. An update to services.jar was needed to change the clock to black text. This version of services.jar contains the patches needed for NookTouch ModManager. If you don't run NTMM, the patches are ignored. The two small "maps" files are dependencies for Tasker and any apps created with Tasker (such as NST UI, SetCover, NSTWeather and QuickTiles). These files don't do anything but if you ever want to install any of the other apps I have created with Tasker, their presence will save you a step.
The small binary file fb2png is a replacement for the malfunctioning /system/bin/screenshot. It converts the contents of the frame buffer into a graphics file with png format.

So, it's pretty complicated and that's why I think this CWM method is best. In particular, MinimalisticText is difficult to install properly on the NST/G. Even following my own instructions it's hit-or-miss. This way you have a working version install with no effort. You can eventually uninstall things you are not going to use. Look for those tips in the instructions.
3. Download folders.zip. Inside the zip are two folders, media and sdcard. Copy the contents of the "media" folder to /media on your NST/G. If there is not already a "screensavers" folder in /media, create one and inside that create the folder "CurrentBookCover".
Next, copy the contents of the "sdcard" folder to /sdcard on your NST/G. If there is not already a "Pictures" folder in /sdcard, create one and inside that create the folder "Screenshots".
You now have everything you need to reproduce the UI shown in the first post.
INSTALLATION
1. Make a backup of your NST/G. Everything you are going to do is reversible, but it would be so much easier to just restore a backup if you decide you don't like the result.
2. Power down, remove your regular sdcard and replace it with the CWM card. Power up. Wait for CWM to pass the splash screen and display the first menu.
If you're not familiar with CWM, movement in the menu and item selection are controlled by hardware buttons:
upper left: previous menu, upper right: up, lower right: down, "n" button: select.
a. move down the menu to "install zip from sdcard". Press "n"
b. press "n" again ("choose zip from sdcard")
c. move to framework_newUI_CWM.zip and press "n"
d. move either up or down to confirm the file you want to flash and press "n"
Spoiler: I only want the updated Status Bar!!!
skip e,f,g and after the reboot is complete, delete all the "folder" content from both /media and /sdcard
e. again, select "choose zip from sdcard" (press "n")
f. move to NST_newUI_CWM.zip and press "n"
g. move either up or down to confirm the file you want to flash and press "n"
The screen gets a little mushed up with the menu after two flashes, but all you need is to get back to the beginning.
h. go back (upper left button) until the first item in the menu is "reboot system now"
i. remove the CWM sdcard and replace it with your usual sdcard, then press "n"
Chug, chug, chug... Boot may take a little longer because of replacing the framework-res.apk, but be patient.
THE DETAILS
1. Change Wallpaper (may have to do it twice for it to take effect). Tap on the Wallpaper Chooser app and navigate through the tiny print to /media/Wallpaper. There are three files. You want "NST UI Background_p.png". The other two files are for a smoother transition to landscape mode (handled by QuickTiles). If you never use your device in landscape mode you can design your own wallpaper to suit without making a version for landscape. The Wallpaper Changer app is sort of funky, but it gets the job done. If you have my Nook Settings app, there is a wallpaper setting under "Display", so you could delete Wallpaper Changer in that case.
2. Initialize NST UI by tapping on the icon. You are taken back to the home screen and get an SU permission prompt.
3. Use NTMM to assign NST UI to the status bar "reading now" button.
Spoiler: I only use the stock reader!!
In that case you do not need to assign the NST UI app to the "reading now" button. Everything else will function fine.
Also assign ADW Launcher to the "n" button.
Note: if you are not familiar with ADW Launcher, the three dots at the upper right corner of the app drawer screen are your friend. The first option allows you to hide apps from the drawer, the second to create additional tabs if you want to group apps. And it's a convenient place to access the App Manager.
4. Add BookCover widget (DesktopVisualizer), scale and position.
a. Long press on the home screen somewhere blank. You will see a dialog. Tap as needed to get to "Widgets."
b. Select a 4x4 Desktop Visualizer widget.
c. A place-holder for the widget appears somewhere on the home screen. Long-press until you can drag the image down to below "Now Reading". Then tap on it.
d. Tap on "Select Icon" (this will be the book cover image). Tap on "Image File". You'll see a selection of possible apps that might open such a file. In my case that was ES File Explorer. If nothing shows up that will allow you to navigate to /media/NowReading/NSTcover.png or select from a variety of images (with a gallery app like QuickPic) you will need to install something.
e. Tap on "Select Action". You will see options. We want to launch an app.
Note: if you would rather not have the book cover image repeat the function of the "reading now" button, select "None". In that case tapping on the book cover image will have no effect.
Select NST UI. This makes the widget active as a "button" which will open the "Now Reading" book.
f. To complete the setup of the widget, trash the Label and select "None" for the Touch Effect color. Then tap on OK.
g. You are now back on the home screen:
Long-press on the widget until you see the dialog open and select "Resize":
The best option for me was to move the bottom handle down a little. This gave an image that seemed to fit in the space and had the right aspect ratio. Compare with the screenshot in the first post. Of course you can position and size the image any way you want if you are developing your own design. When you select a book to read this temporary image will be replaced.
5. Getting a custom version of the SetCover app.
Spoiler: Why does this have to be so complicated????
I've really tried everything to simplify this but I've come up with nothing. The issue is with the appWidgetID and the manager hidden somewhere on the device. In order to manipulate the book cover widget via Tasker the widget ID# is required. This is no problem but there is no way to use a variable to carry this information. And...Desktop Visualizer seems to almost pick a random number for its widgets so there is no dependable way to know what your individual widget ID# for the book cover image will be until you create the widget. Desktop Visualizer has the "ability" to clear the widget from memory if you delete it (from the App Manager) but it only resets the ID# back to the value it started with (whatever it was) and that not 100% of the time (a reboot helps).
What this means is that each version of SetCover has to be custom made for your particular widget ID#. This is not a difficult thing for me to do--just a few changes in the code for your ID#--and I am happy to do it. But it does mean that if you accidentally delete the book cover widget, you may not be able to make a new one with the same ID# and thus will need a new version of the app.
a. Use a file manager to navigate to /data/data/jp.co.bii.androi.app.dskvzr/files.
Inside that folder there should be one file representing the book cover widget. The file name will be something like "conf_1.dat". Your widget ID# is the numeric part of the file name (so, "1", in the example shown). PM me with your widget ID# and I will send you a custom version of SetCover.
b. Install the app and initialize it by tapping on the icon. You are returned to the home screen and an SU permission prompt is generated. It also takes a screenshot (think of it as a test drive...).
c. Use NTMM to assign SetCover to the hardware button of your choice (for manual cover capture). Remember, automatic cover images are only generated for non-DRM epub files. Everything else requires one button press when the cover is displayed on the screen.
5. Create additional SimiFolders and arrange dock icons
Spoiler: I do not want SimiFolders. I am going to use single app icons!!!
Uninstall the SimiFolder app. If the sample SimiFolder icon (the "books") does not disappear from the dock area of the home screen, double-tap on it until the dialog appears and choose "Remove". Remember that ADW Launcher allows you to use custom icons on the home screen, so even if you use single app icons you can still customize for an overall uniform effect if you want. To change the icon, double-tap on an app icon and choose "edit" from the dialog that appears.
I've provided one sample SimiFolder (the "books") so that setup of additional folders is simplified (if you like my choices...). Here's how to make additional ones.
a. Tap on the SimiFolder icon in the app drawer. Just a useful tidbit before we go on: the "Applications" section lists your apps, as you might guess. But there is an option in there for changing the app icon. I did this with the stock Library app in the sample "Reader" folder. So, tap on "Folder" and then "Add Folder". Give the folder a name and select the type of folder ("Combined").
Finally, to keep things simple for now, you can skip all the tedious configuration by choosing to "Copy settings from Folder". In this case, the sample "Readers" folder I provided. Save before going on.
b. To add apps to the new folder, tap on it and then on "Add".
This takes you to a screen with all your apps. Check the ones you want. You can choose to order the apps manually or let the app arrange them ("Sorting", back on the previous screen).
c. To get the new SimiFolder to appear on the home screen (in the dock) you need to use DesktopVisualizer. Long-press on an empty area of the home screen to bring up the ADW dialog:
Use the dialog options that follow to navigate to /media/Icons and select the icon of your choice (you can add/design your own, of course).
You would choose your own folder, of course. Then you are back to the home screen and you can drag your new SimiFolder shortcut down to the dock and arrange as you like.
6. Add Greeting widget (MinimalisticText)
Spoiler: I do not want the Greeting widget!!!
This requires a special version of the NST UI app with the widget control parts removed. Uninstall the existing NST UI app and install NST UI_no_widget. Initialize the app by tapping on the icon and grant SuperUser permission. If you also do not want the Weather widget, you can uninstall MinimalisticText and delete /sdcard/Fonts as well as /sdcard/MinimalisticTextPreferences
a. Long-press on the home screen somewhere and add a Widget. You want MinimalisticText 5x1 Horizontal. This takes you to the app itself where you enter the name for the widget. Use the name as shown.
b. Scroll to the very end of Settings until you see Save/Restore. Choose "Restore" and select "Greeting". This reads in the widget as I have created it so you don't have to go through all the setup.
c. DO NOT USE either the back arrow or back button at this point!! You'll have to start all over again. Instead, scroll back through Settings to find "Custom Layout". You can now see the "innards" of the widget. You want the last item which will allow you to type in your name.
d. NOW use the back button (status bar) twice to dismiss the keyboard and close the editing screen. To save any changes to a widget of any kind, ALWAYS use the menu button (status bar) followed by a tap on "OK" at the bottom. MinimalisticText closes and you are back at the home screen.
e. Resize and position as before with the book cover image (see post #1). For me, pulling down on the bottom a little put the widget in the correct vertical position.
7. Add Weather widget (MinimalisticText)
Spoiler: I do not want the Weather widget!!!
Uninstall the NST Weather app. Delete the NSTWeather folder from your sdcard. From /sdcard/Fonts folder, delete weathericons.ttf
If you want to have the Weather widget, you will need to get a free API from Open Weather Maps. For more information, see the original app post. You don't need to go through the whole widget-building process. Once you have the API and your geocoordinates, tap on the app icon and fill in the Settings information. The rest is more or less automatic. You will receive a notification when the data has been processed and the app is "widget-ready". Then you follow the procedure for the Greeting widget (the size is Horizontal 4x2), but name it "Weather" and read in the configuration for that widget. There's nothing else to do but position the widget properly on the home screen. If your location is not showing up correctly for some reason, you can go into the widget settings (Layout>CustomLayout) and replace the Location variable with static text. Message me for additional help.
8. Configure QuickTiles
Spoiler: I do not want QuickTiles!!!
Be aware that if you ever use your device in landscape mode the static elements of the home screen wallpaper provided will be improperly positioned. This special version of QuickTiles (2.3) contains sufficient code to swap wallpapers during screen orientation changes. If that's not an issue for you, uninstall the QuickTiles app and delete /sdcard/Qtiles. If you never use your device in landscape (or always change from within an app like EBookDroid or PerfectViewer) you can also uninstall RotationLocker.
Tap on the app icon to initialize. By default, only the WiFi tile is set. You should read more about how the app works and how to set up additional tiles in the original app post. Some functions may require the presence of additional apps. RotationLocker is a dependency so whether you actually use that particular tile, the app must remain installed if you want to run QuickTiles.
Just in case...
If you have deleted some apps and later change your mind, it would be a shame to have to go back to the CWM zip and flash all over again. For that reason I've posted copies (or links to copies) of the main "optional" apps. Note that MinimalisticText comes as a CWM-flashable zip because it is so difficult to get a working install by just installing the app.

quite a bit of understanding and tinkering needed ... will try and get back i i like it ... currently my NSTG is an a state of ZEN ... thanks to your masterpiece of the RN button with my custom menu ... Its like i've already achived nirvana ... my mind is ONE with this current version(only cos of your RN Menu app) !!!
