I had a lot of problems trying to root my phone after I upgraded my firmware to 2.2 using the SuperOneClick application however, I did manage to come up with a fix that worked for me.
(Please note: that I can not be held responsible for any damage this may cause to your phone)
When I first tried using the SuperOneClick I notice that the applicaiton would hang "waiting for device". I received the following advice but it didn't work:
When the application gets to the "Waiting for device" prompt complete the following.
-Unplug usb from phone
-Uncheck usb debugging
-Replug usb cable
-Unplug usb cable
-Recheck usb debugging
-Replug usb cable.
Rince and repeat until successful rooting.
If you have tried this and it didn't work then try the following:
Google JuneFabrics PdaNet Andriod and download / install the PdaNet for Android.
During the installation you will be prompted to install new USB drivers so that your phone can connect to your PC. However, if you have ever connected your phone to Kies or for file transfer then say no to the install.
Once you have the program installed go back to SuperOneClick and run as administrator.
Happy Rooting...
It worked for me on my second try without having to download PdaNet, but I know it can be a pain in the a$$
SuperOneClick worked for me on first try on Captivate 2.2!
Also worked first try on my friend's Bell Galaxy S.

I couldn't get z4root to work
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I896 using Tapatalk
No z4root is not working. The exploit it use only works on 2.1 not 2.2. The app will FC / freeze or just close.
Also just a note on the SOC. Please don't start thread saying the usb unplug/replug method worked or didn't for you. This IS the way it works. If it worked on your first try, well good for you go buy a lottery ticket cause it's your lucky day.
The success rate is 100% but the number of tries is random. Could work on your 5th attemp like it can on your 1st or 2th.

Normal 3e clockwork recovery has signature verification which prevents a lot of the files here from being flashed on your phone (because they are not officially verified/signed). There's a modified 3e clockwork file that you can put on your phone. When I first installed it for my own rooted phone, I used untermensch's 3e_recovery_installer.zip which was easy and didn't require any terminal stuff.
hook up your phone to a computer with the galaxy s drivers (using PDAnet works great). then run the script. the script is kinda wonky so it took a few tries to work.
let us know how that goes

I found that to actually flash this ROM, you need to do the steps I mentioned, above.
with 2.2 jp3 or jp2 , u don't need do root it so far . use Odin3 downgrade it to 2.1 and use oneclickroot .......... ( use adb to enter download mode with some model can't use 3 button . "fastboot reboot download"
this superoneclick does not work
I have tried this method multiple times, all seems to go right, i get superuser showing up in my app drawer, yet when i use clockworks recovery to flash a new recovery I get the "failed to verify whole-file signature" followed by the next line "signature verification failed Installation aborted"...
I have the rogers captivate, it has been updated to android 2.2, Android system recovery <3e>.
I have also tried the adb version of rooting with the same result. Not sure if anyone has actually gotten theirs to work on rogers, they really should make a video or a more detailed list. Im not new to rooting or anything, but the instructions versus the results are not adding up. Hope there are others with success stories that they would like to share.
WOW you know you have 3e recovery. Search info on it.
you will find that 3e has signature verification... thats why your zips fail!!!
you will also find the 3e recovery FIX..
IT WAS FULLY EXPLAINED 2 POSTS ABOVE YOURS this friggin page!!! up 10 inches!!!

I have tried the untermensch's 3e_recovery_installer.zip method, but ended up bricking my phone. Thankfully rogers sent me a new one when i complained that it was the devices fault. Has this worked on anyones captivate.
yeah the version you flashed was for a vibrant not a captivate...
use the instructions Posted above and in my sig "3e fix"
why is this the most difficult thing this month when its an old problem?

Hi guys!
I had root my htc hero a month ago then i tried few rom's to see how they are. My phone is locked for Orange UK. Everything was ok. Then i had updated the new ROM from htc website (via RUU file). The phone working fine, but now i can't go into recovery mode. If i reboot into recovery mode i have a white screen with a triangle and a phone sign. Pressing Home+Power again i have acces to 3 options:reboot system now, apply sdcard:update.zip, and wipe data/factory reset but only reboot working. Also i have an error on the same screen: E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Trying to downgrade using an older version of RUU i got an error: on phone-Checking customer ID. Upgrade failed; on the computer: Customer ID error.
Everything else working fine.
What can i do?
Thank you.

Which RUU exactly?.... Please do not say the new 2.1?!
As long as it isn't the 2.1 update from a few days ago,... Just follow BTDAGs guide in my signature. You will probably need to downgrade using the goldcard method. But start at the top and you should be fine.
No, is not 2.1update. I want to update to the new 2.1 but can't do because of that issue.

Followed BTDAG guide with no succes.
On first method with flashrec i've got an error: Backup FAILED: Could not run command.
Second option can't use because i don't have full access to recovery mode
Last option (goldcard), i've got an error when use: cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid
saying: cat/sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid not found.
What else i can do? Please guys...
Thank you.
Have you set up the SDK correctly? ... Do you see anything when doing:
cd c:\android\tools\
adb devices
???????
Help Please
I have the same problem.
Tried everything, can't flash new recovery img using apk flasher, can't try the goldcard method cause I get "adb access denied" even though "adb devices" shows my phone. Tried using Droid Explorer to flash the new img or update but that didn't work too. Formatted my sd card a few times using the phone & my OS (when it was mounted and acted as disk on key). I also reinstalled the RUU that caused it a few time to see maybe I did something wrong but nothing (I too had a rooted phone and installed the 2.73 Orange UK root).
What else can I do? I feel like it has something to do with my SD card but I don't know how else to format it. Even on Droid Explorer it doesn't show me any of the folders that are in there when I'm connected (like tmp, rosiescrl, footprints).
Help
Tried to reinstall corect drivers for HTC but in device manager show 'drivers are up to date', so no change yet. Any other ideea?
tried to reinstall RUU file 2.73.61.66. Was working fine, then i tried RUU 2.73.405.5 . No chance. It said 'customer ID error'. Recovery mode still not working.
Help guys.
Well, of course it won't be working. Updating with official rom completely replaces everything on your phone including custom boot. And, of course, you won't be able to install .405.5 since it's lower version than your firmware. You have to downgrade to .405.5 using goldcard and then repeat the root and custom recovery install procedure.
I rooted my Evo last night with unrEVOked 3.3 and this guide is step-by-step what I did. Hopefully this will help other who are still confused.
NOTE: Make sure any tethering apps are uninstalled prior to doing this. Thanks to SSJon for pointing this out.
Download and install HTC Sync, reboot, uninstall, reboot again.
**Make sure HTC Sync is NOT installed at this point**
-enable USB debugging (menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging)
-Go to unrevoked website and click the Evo, click unrevoked 3, then download for Windows and save the file to your desktop (there's support for Mac OS and Linux, however this guide was written for Windows)
-Go here and follow the instructions to install the hboot drivers
-Reboot your phone and let it load up like normal
-Connect your phone using the charge only option
-Run the unrevoked file you downloaded and wait for it to finish
-Finally, enjoy.
When I used this method my phone had just finished updating to 3.70.651.1 and had hboot 2.10 and fully charged battery. Through a good portion of this your phone cannot charge so I advise you to have a decent charge left.
Thank you PryorDaniel! Worked like a champ. I am running CyanogenMod 6.1.2. So far working like a charm!
Thanks again!

Once the phone is rooted, is there any reason why HTC Sync can't be reinstalled? I don't want my stuff in "the cloud" so I use HTC Sync quite a bit to sync with Outlook.

Once you are done rooting, you can install it again, and use it. It just cant be installed during root because it messes with the way unrevoked communicates with the phone.
Apply latest ota with unrevoked 3.31
I ran unrevoked 3.31 and am still seeing the 3.29.651.5 build. How do I get the latest ota?
Okay so I did the 3.3 went fine. Now i see there is a newer one 3.31 how do I update to it?

You have to flash a ROM that's based off the newest build. Unrevoked just gets you rooted.
i just ran 3.31 and im getting a message saying "Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?" im running 3.70.651.1 i first thought it was because i had easytether installd in my laptop then i uninstalled it, i retried and nothing . idk why thanks and sorry in advance.

I am too. Trying it again. I just downgraded, then put OTA 2.2 on my phone. then ADK, drivers again, and am running the reflash tool.
As a side note, I tried installing the ADK from their site - the one that says recommended. Then successfully installed it, but then decided to uninstall it using Add/Remove programs.....it wiped out my ENTIRE My Documents folder!
I just rooted using Unrevoked on my phone and for some reason when I am at home it says my current location is Chennai, India. I am actually in Dallas, TX though... It seems to be intermittent though. Sometimes it is correct, others it updates to Chennai. Any ideas to why it isn't updating correctly?

im getting waiting for root i wonder how long its gonna take
how long did it take to run the root for you guys
First post....
I have my Gf's HTC evo and been waiting for a Hboot 2.02 One step root....
Tried the steps in this post and do not have HTC sync software installed and I have previously rooted my own Evo. I'm getting a error in Unrevoked3 stating Failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?
Her phone:
Android 2.2
Baseband Version 2.15.00.09.01
Kernal V. 2.6.32.15
Build number 3.30.651.3
Software 3.30.651.3
I have not updated since getting it around Christmas time although there is a HTC update pending. I tried multiple attempts to run Unrevoked 3 before posting and there is always an error on the phone when running it :
Sorry the application Zysploit has stopped unexpectedly. please try again.
I get that error every time. Any way for my to get a simple root still?
Excellant and easy to follow direction. Thanks.
I feel really stupid even having to ask this since I've had a vibrant for the last few months and this should be a no brainer switching over to the fascinate, but appearantly there is something I'm missing.
A few months ago,my friend bought this fascinate and I rooted it for him using rage against the cage, manually typing in commands using a tutorial that I can't find anymore for some reason,it was running dl01 I believe, whatever is stock. he was happy with that for awhile, then tried zinc and a few other roms and then odin'd back to dl01 and used it like that for awhile. fast forward a few months and I bought it from him and i'm trying to reroot. I used super one click and it succeeded and I have root access,I installed rom manager,it downloaded cwm and I told it to reboot to recovery and I get E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
I then tried flashing to DJ05,and I get the same result. any idea why this is happening? I have 2e recovery with both,so it should be working. I have tried deleting the update.zip file and making rom manager redownload it over both 3g and wifi and nothing changes. any ideas?
(edit)
now I feel double stupid. I followed the sticky for how to install CWM and I flashed the file in odin and that fixed it. I wonder why it worked a few months ago without doing that, but this time it wouldn't? oh well, either way it fixed it,mods-can you delete this thread please?
Hi, I have tried z4root and SuperOneClick. But both dont seem to work, they freeze like mid-way. Z4ROOT gets stuck with the loading sign continuing to spin, but I have seen videos when it takes like 30 seconds. SuperOneClick gets stuck on Waiting for Device.... AND YES, I have tried these methods with USB Debugging checked.
I have, however, NOT tried the traditional update.zip/reinstall packages method. Because I cannot find a thread that confirms that works for froyo 2.2 (KA6).
I have read this thread:

but in order for me to continue with those steps, i need to root my phone, which I cant.

i know the feeling, i was having issues with SuperOneClick, worked for 3 hours on this. http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Samsung-Vibrant/How-Do-i-Root-my-2-2-Vibrant/td-p/709625 helped me out a bunch.
the traditional update.zip doesnt work until you get a new recovery mode installed.
i'll run thru his steps with my comments.
1. also make sure you are up to date on .NET
2. i ran this with both exploits, both times busybox didnt install (not enough space on system)
3.for step 6 it may be easier to unzip the 3e_recovery zip
4. i was a little confused as to where to put things, so i removed my micro SD card, and then put it on the "root" of the vibrant after mounting it.
5.and install it, i used it to figure out if i had "enough" root.
6. i installed a bunch of file browers trying to access system/bin, in the end my request for superuser wasn't popping up until i installed "superuser" from the market, then i used root explorer to do the rest.
7. i got lost trying to find this folder, its /res and /efs
8. more or less ignore what superoneclick says after you click the button, until it finishes.
9.install.bat is the one
10.i didnt do this
11. i had the install.bat send me into recovery mode and i reinstalled the packages
12. with any luck you should be there.
other notes: i installed busybox from the market, and used it to check to see if i had enough root. make sure busybox installs correctly before step 8.
also i ignored the instructions about turning on and off usb debugging, on my vibrant i could only turn it on and off if usb wasn't plugged in.
hopefully this helps!
My friend has the samsung intercept and I was going to help him root it. I have tried Z4root and gingerbreak but they didn't work.
Does anyone have a site on how to root? Or instructions?
I am a very experienced android user and I am very comfortable with ADB if it is needed.
Anybody know?
Let's try again. Does anyone here know?

Yes I found that method as well. We tried that about twenty times along with another 1 click at xda, z4, and gingerbreak. Is there an Adb method? Also, would rageagainstthecage work?

S.D.X. is a website S.D.X. developers They have several guides to rooting.I rooted mine with a programed called sw updater with my pc but now ther are easier ways.
Ok thank you I will check it out
You're going to need to run one (or several) of the root exploits (until they 'take') and then edit some files manually via adb to make it permanent. See the SDX Developers website as previously noted.
It won't let me post a link but Google this...
how-to-install-custom-kernelrom-on-your-intercept-using-cm01-recovery
I did it with SWUpgrade Tool, but...
1) Even though I could connect and swap files between my phone and my computer over USB, SWUpgrade for some reason would not recognize my USB connection on Windows XP SP 3. This page along with the Samsung driver link on the same page saved my ass...
Google this - Troubleshoot driver error June Fabrics android
2) With the SWUpgrade you have to be really quick and unplug the USB and take out the battery when he says to, or you will not get the custom recovery installed. It took me about 4 tries before I was able to get the custom recovery in my phone.
I previously did the rageagainstthecage method, and while it worked, at one point I stupidly took out the battery when it froze before I had put in a custom recovery and done a backup and I very nearly bricked my phone. It would not bootup after that no matter what. Fortunately I was able to boot into the Virgin Mobile recovery and start from scratch wiping and resetting my phone, but I had to re-download all my apps from the Market all over again which fortunately the Market kept a record of.
I used the first link for the kernel and I am very happy. Just take it slow, be careful, and follow the instructions exactly.
Rooting using ADB Tool Manual Method
