So, I just picked up a new 32gb sd card off eBay. I want to transfer files over from the 2gb one that came with the phone but have no idea what essential files to keep besides my nandroid and titanium backups.

Personally I would transfer everything so all you apps run smoothly. It's not like your gonna run out of memory doing it
Nope definitely won't My sd card is so unorganized now though, so many random folders that I'm unsure of what they are.

Good point! In that case I would delete what you know you put on it and no longer need. Anything else i would leave. Or like you said just your backups. Then just restore your titanium backups.
shouldn't be an issue deleting empty folders either. I noticed a lot of apps create a folder by default just in case.
on that note, really wish android would have some sort of file structure for saving to the SD card (i.e. program files, etc.)

When I copy old 16gb card to new 32gb, the new 32gb it gives me defective card notification, but if use it as blank works fine, I guess some of the files I am copying causing some error.

may be the card. i got a bargin off E-bay and it turned out to be junk. the next one from Amazon was more epensive but did work proper.
That's what I thought at first but when inserted as blank formated works ok I can take pic, view, copy some file etc, but I need to transfer all my stuff from old 16gb original card, I guess I go pick and choose items.
On second thought when inserted first create files that are different from original and causing some problems I am working currently on that deleting those files and copy all stuff back in not sure if gonna work.

It's probably a fake card.
Same problem here. I spent a lot, so I hope its not a fake. It will let me transfer a couple gigs of data, but after that the stuff vanishes.

copy the stuff from the 16 to your PC. Put the 32 in, mount it and copy stuff back a little at a time, maybe that way you can narrow down if there is a set of problem files. I wouldn't put the "Android" folder back on the SD - thats where the apps 2 sd stuff is pushed and it probably won't work right.
That's what I did copied 16gb to PC then copy back to 32gb WinXP couldn't copy all but Win7 let me skip some skin files when put in epic error but if format in epic first then copy just video files around 5gb its ok. I gonna try narrow down what causes copying little at the time.

Just to make it clear I did copy all the context to sd and I can verify that browsing files on PC so its not fake but problems when in phone.

I currently have a 16gb card in my phone. it is loaded to the bone right now. i'm going to a concert tonight and will probably record some stuff in HD. that takes alot of space. rather than delete my 12 gigs of music off to make room, i was going to use another card i have that is empty. i'm thinking it'll work just fine but is there anything on the sd card in my phone that would need to be copied over, for the system mainly, to work ok? all my apps are on the phone, but i'm wondering about some of the other files/folders that get loaded by the phone. any info would be great. thanks! (running liberty 1.5 btw)
I would love to know more about this as well...I recently "upgraded" to a class 6 16GB card (and by upgraded, I mean I grabbed the card out of my old HTC TouchPro 2, formatted it, and put it in my DX). I just copied everything from the old card to the new one.

There is a liberty folder on the sdcard that im guessing the toolbox uses that you will want to copy. I would also look for any folders that resemble app names and copy them as well, as they may contain app data. Any other folders you need should be recreated by the OS or apps.

After going download happy since release day of the MT4G, I've been running out of space to install apps =X.
[Gameloft games take a LOT of space]
I have a lot of games because my little cousins like playing with my phone. I already uninstalled the games and apps we don't use soooo
I was wondering if it's recommended to either move apps to SD Card, or use a script of some sort to install apps to ext.
I have a Patriot class 10 16 GB sd card.
Running nightly build 42.
Move everything you can to the SD card. Problem solved.
P.s. you have lots of stuff. Lol

Lol thanks. I was just curious if it was better to install it on ext partition or normal sd card partition
Yeah, my little cousins went crazy on downloading haha.
[Good thing they didn't download paid apps ]
Make sure you delete your text messages. Those add up really quick and are usually the culprit in not having enough memory.
haha i NEVER delete texts xD i 12,036 texts in total in my phone haha

Alternatively you can back up your texts (if you need them) to the sd card using one of the many apps in the market. I like SMS backup & restore. You can back up the texts & then delete them from your internal memory to free up space. Common knowledge I know, but might help a noob somewhere...
get a bigger sd card and put all of your games on it.
I'm planning on trying out a few of these Roms (SS method). My issue so, I'd like to move my internal to my sdcard but I have a tiny 2 GB sdcard. I plan to buy a larger one first.
Basically, I'd like to move sdcard to phone, insert new larger sdcard, than move everything to my sdcard that doesnt need to be on my phone.I'm not really sure how to go about this. I'm playing with an app called link2sd but its not working.

specifically what files are you wanting to move to your sd card? the standard pics, videos, backups? or are you talking about apps, app data, etc?

Well, for what I understand the Roms can take up several gbs on the phones storage possibly only allowing me to have 2 on my phone at any given time. I have the 16 GB gs4 but I only have 3 GB available. My phone has several gbs wrapped up in stuff that I'm not sure what it is, so instead of deleting stuff that I'm non sure of I figured I'd just move stuff to a sdcard. Maybe it doesn't make sense...

The only working app out there that can link your internal to your external is called Foldermount. In in playstore. Free version will only let you mount up to max of 5 folders. paid version which is like 2 or 3 bucks lets you mount as many folder as you want making your phone think that your extrnal is its internal memory. The only issue is if you lose the sd you lose phone so think carefully what you decide to move to sd. If its phone critical leave it on phone memory.
If your just talking pictures, movies, music as well as document, crap like that you can copy to a folder on your computer and when you mount the new card then just copy it all back to sd.
definitely get a larger micro sd card. they're so affordable. a 32gb would last you forever. after you have it, move everything you know how to move to the new card. i keep my roms, backups, photos, videos and misc files on my sd card. if you want to store more than that, give it some research. as i said above, though, for sure get a larger card. its worth it.
Internal storage is a constant struggle. Now that it's rooted, is there any way to make the tablet view the external storage and internal storage the same?
You could have always moved apps to the external card - just go to Settings->App Manager->SD Card, pick the app to move and click the "Move" button. There is also a way to make it so that you can move ANY app to external SD card (search for it) - or I can post a link later.

Thanks for your input. It would allow some apps to be moved, but def. not most of them. I have done a search to find what you're referring to. If you get a chance to link to it, that'd be great!
Thanks.
There are many tutorials on how to do this - here is the first one that came up in a Google search. Just be careful - this will allow you to move ANY app to SD - even apps that shouldn't be moved! Also, if you use a widget for an app, you shouldn't move those apps either as it will break the widgets.

Folder mount is one which works on all android based rooted devices (from 2.x android to 6.0)
Hi all! I am having the same issue. I bought my children these for Christmas, and I was shocked after we installed a couple apps and ran out of space! I put in a large uSD in one of them, and I could not move 90% of the apps over to it! Again, I was shocked.
I am SO glad I found this thread. So can anyone elaborate, like using Folder Mount for example. It sounds like I MUST root their devices in order to ever achieve moving apps to the uSD? Are there any other non-root alternatives, etc?
Thanks so much!
I used a free app from the store called Apps2sd. You have to create a second partition on the sd card, but then you can move/link all apps and associatec data to the sd card. One big thing to keep in mind is sd access times... depending on your sd card, it might be several orders of magnitude slower than the internal memory. I bought a UHS3 sd card and it offer acceptable performance. Hope that helps.
