Swap SGS I9000 Radio with a SGS vibrant SGH-T959 radio - Galaxy S I9000 General

So, i was pondering....
Instead of doing all the work required to mount the FFC (front facing camera) to a SGH-T959 vibrant
it might be simpler to just swap the radio component of the I9000 with a radio from a SGH-T959
according to the photos seen on the forum, it should be do-able, after all that's how Samsung is making the phones for Tmobile anyways
Now, if some one could point me to where i could get the radio component of the SGH-T959, that would be great
If any one ponders, the reason i'm doing this is because i like all the features of the I9000 series, but my phone provider works only on 1700+2100 (AWS) to get 3G
so, only having just 1 band 2100 it is not enough to establish a 3G connection, as it's missing the 1700 band.

Is the radio component modular?
I put the headphone jack/speaker assembly from a 959 into my i9000 so that I could use iPhone compatible headphones with it, but I ran into problems with the light sensor and proximity sensors not working. I tried using the drivers from a Vibrant ROM, but still wouldn't work, so I ended up going back to the original component.
I'm still not sure it's a bad idea, I suspect the components I got may have been bad. I may try again.
Good luck with the project; I'd love to see that work out. If it did, I'd do the same to my i9000 GT, since I'd love to have a SAMOLED phone that worked with both my T-Mo and AT&T sim cards.

Any luck on this?
I want to do exactly the same thing. Hope you find out how.
Thanks!

Is this Vibrant the same as Bell's?

Just wondering if this T Mobile Vibrant is the same as far as rooting and flashing goes as the version Bell will be launching soon in Canada?
Thanks
Bump, anyone know?
To my knowledge, no it isn't. It seems like it will be the same (or atleast look the same) as the euro galaxy S
biggest consideration is to check what frequencies your carrier uses ie is it GSM or CDMA, and for 3g Data what freqs
the tmobile is GSM and for 3G Tmo uses the AWS IV band, ie 1700/2100, and it has to be both of those if you were bringing a european phone here to the USA to use on tmobile - tmobile europe only uses 2100 for 3G, no 1700
as the 2100 is the download side i figured i could live without 3g upload speed but just before pulling the trigger on a european tmobile HTC Desire i found out that if the phone didn't have both sides, ie both 1700 for upload and 2100 for download, tmo's network would hold the phone to 2G or EDGE data speeds
so best bet is to first identify Bell's freqs - and you can do that on the web -
hope that helps some
Thanks, Bell's network is 850/1900. Same as AT&T but it doesn't look anything like the Captivate. Too many models of the same phone... too confusing...
I wouldn't be concerned with looks, in fact to me (i own a vibrant) i like the captivate case better - that report endgadget.com had on the two (vibrant/captivate) liked the way the captivate's case released in the back
the vibrant you have to pop the caseback with your fingernail - its secure but kind of a chintzy way to do it, especially when the capitvate has a nice pull and release mechanism
and the rear surface has some texture for a little better grip

My guess is the standard Galaxy S form factor is a little too much like the iPhone for AT&T's taste, so they wanted one that looks different. They don't want to piss off Apple, their goose that lays the golden eggs.

I've got my crystal ball tuned up...
Bell gets a unit that looks exactly like the US T-Mobile Vibrant, otherwise they wouldn't have called it that. With the AWS/2100 replaced with 850/1900, and same as the T-Mo, no FFC. Bell gets the first Canadian unit, so they got that going on for "cool factor". I'm like 95.9% sure of this.
Based on the posters for the launch party, Telus gets an GSM Epic. That makes a lot of sense, especially since they're releasing the LCD Desire very shortly...the thicker, less sleek Epic would not be in the same category, and they wouldn't have went to the expense of getting the Desire if they were getting regular non-keyboard Galaxy S variant, and vice versa. I'm about 75% sure of this.
A Telus Epic would also make a great replacement for the aging Milestone, which is now out of production, with the GSM Milestone 2 probably still months off.
Rogers gets an unknown unit. I'd lean towards them getting the Captivate style, except for the whole AT&T exclusive lock on the unit, September release of the same unit that works on the same bands seems a little soon for AT&T to give up on the exclusivity costs.
But Rogers needs something to bring to the table that's different than Bell or Telus, so they may get a GSM Fascinate (complete with camera flash). The timing matches the Verizon release window as well, and both may be waiting on Samsung to get these into full production. They may also get the Euro model complete with FFC and big home button, Rogers has a history of supporting video calling. Whatever version they release, it will most likely ship with Froyo in the box.
To confuse the Rogers matter more, the rumor in the SIM unlocking circles is that the AT&T Captivate codes won't be available until October. If Rogers ships a Captivate version of it in September, with the same name, then AT&T will start releasing SIM codes to those that ask, because it's no longer exclusivity-locked.
I'm 33% on each of the Rogers options (Captivate, Fascinate, "pure" Galaxy S)
But it's all guesswork.
That's a pretty interesting theory you have there, and it makes sense too.
Has anyone gotten any of these Galaxy S models sim unlocked yet?

This is the only part of your comment that I think I will argue with. I think the bell version will look identical to the european one. Why do I think so? Two reasons my dear watson,
A.) www . youtube.com/watch?=8QSl8FyhjJE&feature=player_embedded
This video which I believe is correct. (and I think I saw another video that was just a hands on in a small room filled with guys in suits and the one reviewer.
B.) The Samsung Canada page for this device: www . samsung.com/ca/consumer/mobile/mobile-phones/all-phones/GT-I9000HKABMC/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&returnurl=
P.S. I've also heard of rumours of Rogers coming out with a galaxy S device, and Furthermore, supposedly the release date for the Bell Galaxy S will be August 6th

Galaxy S I9000 with ATT

I currently have a Captivate with ATT but would like the added features of the I9000 unlocked version, like front facing cam and the FM radio.
Will the I9000 work with the ATT network. I realize that there are a few differences in the bands that each use, but want the I9000 to work the same as the Captivate. 3g etc.
Anyone have anything on this?
thanks

I am currently using the i9000 on at&t with a new contract (still on my 30-day return policy for the contract). I still have some testing to do with it. One thing that is important to note is that the i9000 will only get 3g in areas with 1900mhz 3g, NOT the 850mhz 3g. Also, the i9000 will be a lot more expansive then the captivate.
edit: Gosh I hate typos.
oh...thanks..i live in the dallas area..ill check to see if we have 1900
if you are interested. Bell Mobility in Canada will release a version that looks pretty much like the EUR version
it is however still called the Vibrant

you will have to first unlock the handset before using it on another carrier

Bell Samsung Vibrant - AT&T US 3G

Okay, after reading around a bit, what I'm thinking seems doable, if not a little expensive.
I need to use AT&T here in the US. It is basically the only company I can get reception with in certain areas that I spend a good portion of my day at. I would like both GSM and WCDMA service with AT&T. I want an Android.
I would really like a front facing camera if it's possible.
I have read the Samsung Vibrant being sold on Canada's Bell Mobility has the front facing camera and the 850 & 1900 WCDMA frequencies I'm looking for. Of course, I'd have to outright buy it and get the unlock code.
I do not know if the front facing camera would work though, as I'm not sure if there is an app that will work for it that I could use. Seeing as how Bell Mobility has a special app, I'm not sure if it'd even work via AT&T's network. If I can't get the camera working, then I might as well do the Captivate.
Can anyone 1) Confirm my claims that the Bell Vibrant can work with AT&T's 3G (850 and 1900 WCDMA)? and 2) knows of an app that'd work with it, that i could use via the AT&T network?
the I9000M (Bell Vibrat) works just fine
you only need to unlock it
there are a couple of good video voice over ip phone call software already in android market to test/use it
the "special" apps is nothing but just remote control software for the Bell Digital cable box (useless)
ismartsims and other newer turbo sims works with the phone, if you can't get an unlock code

Nexus S announced ;)

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/12/introducing-nexus-s-with-gingerbread.html
http://www.google.com/nexus/#!/index
Nexus S is the first smartphone to feature a 4” Contour Display designed to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand and along the side of your face. It also features a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, front and rear facing cameras, 16GB of internal memory, and NFC (near field communication) hardware that lets you read information from NFC tags. NFC is a fast, versatile short-range wireless technology that can be embedded in all kinds of everyday objects like movie posters, stickers and t-shirts.
Hell yeah! Pretty much the SGS hardware!
Front+Back cam
1Ghz HummingBird
16Go
Let's hope we'll get a Gingerbread on the 16th!
WHY is that always all the good phones are on 900 bands?
# Quad-band GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900
# Tri-band HSPA: 900, 2100, 1700
# HSPA type: HSDPA (7.2Mbps) HSUPA (5.76Mbps)

There are so many phones I like, but none on 850 version (only I9000M), they always make them for Europe first... Why?!?!?!
Very nice, the specs look almost identical to the i9000. I guess we'll see a port soon!
I'd say I can't wait to have Gingerbread on my Galaxy S, damn I hate TouchWiz.
Review:
http://techcrunch.com/2010/12/06/google-nexus-s-review/
Yes even Gingerbread 2.3 has now gone official i just hope some one in the XDA community ports it soon for our i9000's to unleash its true power and potential with out off cource instaling a lagfix.
It is said that 16th is when tmoble is getting the nexus s
(via Engadget)
My request some one please port 2.3 for our i9000 too coz samsung is gona take ages to bring it as a official update via keis they dint even completly realease there 2.2 update to every one....
I mean XDA members are way better with software anyways so
"Hurray for 2.3"
My final verdict any ways
Galaxy S i9000 (with out a micro sd slot) (beefed up design of the device) + Better Gps chip + 2.3 + NFC (Which v wont b using any time soon) + Faster Update via Google paractcally = "The New Nexus S"
Yes yes u heard me the Nexus S dosent have a micro sd slot for memory expansion only built in 16GB kind of odd any ways.
So i am nt gona buy a Nexus S perhaps i will wate for the nex gen Nexus coz any ways if v port the nexus s software to out i9000 its gona give us the same xperence as with the Nexus S so why to buy it!!

Which provider in Canada will work on the new Nexus S ?
Since Bell Mobility is using 850MHz and/or 1900MHz, does that me I can just put in my SIM card and be good to go ?
I hope GB will arrive soon on our phone...only hw difference seems to be this NFC feature, but i guess devs could just disable it (or not)...assuming it's a hw component and not just software app (i could be wrong)
Could the reason for Samsung's 'lazy' implementation and rollout of Froyo be because more development resources are being spent on getting Gingerbread on the Galaxy S?
so... the Nexus S is a Galaxy S with Gingerbread.
Bad news for those who hoped something new.
Good news for Galaxy S owners. I hope we can flash the Nexus S rom as soon as possible!

hot damn that looks amazingly sexy! the minor changes just looks so much better!! wowww.. but no dual core??
Nah, I would think that the delay with froyo had to do with Sammy's work on the SGT, rather than the Nexus S.
This will definitely be ported, it might even not require a port if it uses odin. I can't wait, we might have it in less than 10 days if samfirmware get their hands on it.

No. It will fail on Bell or Telus HSPA, it won't even work for voice. It will work voice and EDGE only with Rogers/Fido. Wind/Mobilcity will support it, inside their microscopic zones.
I'm pretty sure they'll do what they did with the Nexus One, which is to give T-Mobile a month or so of "exclusivity" in North America, then roll out a 850/1900 HSPA version.
i like it and all, but still, the shape is so weird...... just like the galaxy i9000, might just stick with this as no major difference in specs or looks, do you think gingerbread will come to our i9000's?
My NEW phone
shouldnt samsung themselves be porting this **** over stat? theyve had all of the code for months now working on this new phone. it should be simple for them to port it with the hardware being so similar.
somehow i dont see it happening tho. how soon do you think 2.3 will be for the poor galaxy s?
This phone looks great, but I'm worried that it'll have RFS. If it's just a retooled galaxy s, is it going to suffer from bad gps and lag?
I loved my galaxy s when I got it, but it just degrades more everyday, and its totally stock. Sometimes the lag is so bad, that I can't answer the phone because it's ringing but the UI has locked up and I can't swipe to answer. A bit of lag is something I can deal with, not being able to answer the phone is indefensible.

diffrence between this and the i9000 galaxy S?

hey guys
just wondering what the diffrence is between the galaxy S fascinate and the galaxy S i9000 is?
i cant find any direct comparisons.
can anyone please help me?
The i9000 is a GSM phone. Fascinate is a CDMA phone.
The i9000 also has an FM radio, we don't

i dont care for radios so no big deal there
i9000 has a Front-Facing camera I believe.
From a bit of research (i.e. Googling ) it would appear that Australia's CDMA network was shut down in 2008, and the GSM network became the only option. A CDMA-only phone won't work on a GSM network, and vice-versa. There are a few phones that support both CDMA and GSM (such as the Droid 2 Global), but most only support one or the other. It would appear that the Fascinate would be pretty much useless in Australia, although the i9000 should work fine if it uses the same set of frequencies as they use there.

The Fascinate is a CDMA phone. In the US, it's sold on Verizon Wireless. It has 384 MB of RAM in exchange for larger internal storage and camera flash. The Epic is a CDMA phone. It's arguably the best out of all of the US variants. It has a slide-out keyboard and six-axis accelerometer and Front-Facing camera and 5MP camera with single-LED flash. It's sold on Sprint. The Vibrant is closes to the original i9000. It's basically the same except that it has no front-facing camera (although the space to add one is still there) and it has 4 capacitive buttons on the front instead of the original 2. It's GSM. The Captivate is the same as the Vibrant except it's sold on AT&T and, by default, can't sideload applications because of AT&T's stupid restrictions.
The only differences are as many before me have said : Its a CDMA phone, It lacks a front facing camera, and It doesn't have the same amount of internal storage as the i9000 (we do still have 512 megs of RAM, the system only makes 3 something available to android like with all of the S variants). In your situation though it sounds like you'd be better off with an i909. Its basically the 9000 with both CDMA and GSM support but its only for the Chinese market so it may be a bit hard to come across (Ive been hunting for one for the longest myslf to no avail)
What about the Samsung Captivate?
If i got one of them would i be going from good to worse if i sell my Galaxy S i9000?
Really want a NextG and can get a Captivate for $599 ( NextG version )
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Samsung had a gsm model on the market. Isn't that what TelUs in Canada uses?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
CDMA only works in the US. GSM is global. So don't worry about the features. make sure the device works on your network FIRST
If it's being sold in Aus it's probably the Telus Fascinate. OP, is the model # T959D (Telus) or i500 (Verizon)?
Both the Telus Fascinate and the AT&T/Rogers Captivate are GSM phones with the 850 band used for 3g down under. Only the Telus has HSUPA, though, so it may be slightly faster.

Not true. CDMA is in the US, Canada, and several countries around the world including Japan and even Australia, up until 2008.
However, with CDMA, there is no SIM card to switch and it's a ***** to switch networks and take your phone with you unless the new network doesn't care if you bring outside phones.
ok just called them up and its the TelUS version, so its the GSM version, and NextG will work
fascinate a good pick then after i sell my i9000?
also, they are trying to tell me this phone now

Uh, no. The Bell Vibrant (i9000m) would be ok, but that's the T mo one which has different and incompatible bands.

The tmobile vibrant does in-fact support the 850 band when its unlocked (just search for tmobile vibrant on AT&T because I cant link it) so either model works

You can unlock it yourself. There are apps on and off the market that will do it for you. Also, the T-Mobile version supports both T-Mobile's and AT&T's 3G frequencies.
