Builtin bluetooth tethering

I'm running Ubuntu Lucid and paired the DX via BT. During the BT pairing wizard, there was an option in Ubuntu for using the device's connection for Internet, so I checked it to try it.
After establishing a PAN connection, I was online! It seems BT tethering is builtin into the DX? I don't have pdanet installed and that's how I was gonna tether via BT until getting root access.
Btw, the phone is not provisioned for the 3G hotspot option nor did I opt for that option.

I'm running Windows 7 ultimate x64, and can confirm that BT internet acccess through the Droid X works.
I opened bluetooth devices on the computer, went into the DroidX BT menu, made the droid discoverable, paired with the computer, there was a pin to confirm, generated by the DX.
Then to go online on the computer I 'connected as access point' or something like that.
I'm posting from that connection now.
Also my phone is not provisioned for the 3G hotspot option nor did I opt for that option.
One less need for Root, although I would like to get rid of some of the Bloatware. I'm pretty happy with the ROM's performance and battery life is much better than the EVO, so a custom ROM is really not necessary, but Root would be nice so I could use ADB and Android Commander.

Speeds are pretty good
I'm getting between 730 to 1050 Kb/s up and 250 - 614 Kb/s down.
Latency is about 110 ms.

Once I got the DroidX into windows Bluetooth devices, there was still an exclamation point in a triangle next to it, but it doesn't matter.
Just Right click on the Droid and click on Connect using -> Access Point.
I'm online in like a second.
I hope they don't kill this functionality in Monday's update.

I'm used to surf and download to my windows phone through bluetooth using the internet on my computer. I't can't be done with my new android phone?

I dont see why Android would want to waste their time with such inferior methods. 3G is faster than bluetooth. But WiFi is the option to choose.

I think the OP wants his laptop as the access point....not his phone (tethering). This can be done with WinMo phones. It is useful in places where there is no free WiFi....like in my workplace we only use LAN with our laptops. Whenever I connect my Desire to my laptop via USB or BT, I hope I could then update weather and download and install apps on my HTC Desire using my laptop's internet connection.

The only way to do it without some root bluetooth hacking would be broadcasting wifi from your laptop. Mac OS has this built-in in the sharing preference pane, Windows can do it but there are a few more steps. Nothing hard.

dude..yes may be you are right..in somecases its needed...there are many threads on the same issue..dude...try using "mhotspot"...effortless...no need to install it...

Droid Wireless Tethering
Google a program called gingersnap. it works. It gives super user rights. Be carefull your data usage will be high. Make sure you have unlimited data. you will also need to download a wifi tether program

[Q] WIFI tethering not connecting to internet

So, I managed to get my X rooted about an hour ago (using a script and the XDA-Dev package). I installed the wireless tether app (that worked on my little Eris) and I can connect to it with my laptop but there's no internet access. I feel like I'm so close but have to be missing something. I love the phone otherwise-- makes the Eris look like a slug.
Any ideas? I'm sure I'm missing something simple. Messing with these phones is a lot of fun.

Disable access restriction. It hoses the connection.

Title says it all folks. Who here is using an Epic, rooted and tethering just fine via USB? Only one catch....without using PDAnet or other third party apps. Just the phone.

I have no idea how to do this for the life of me, but why not stick with wifi tether? You can lock the phone or put on access control so only you can access it...

Because these phones heat up quite a bit when running a 4g radio, plugged into a charger, and the wifi radio. I want to tether via usb so that I'm getting power while I tether AND don't have to turn on the wifi radio.
Cut down on heat, increase the life of your battery and phone.
Besides that, it's a feature of the phone that I paid for and I want to be able to use it. Lol.

I've been trying to be nice about my data and pay for tethering through Sprint without rooting and doing wifi tether/usb but I'm finding that this Epic doesn't play nice with Mac and USB and there's a glitch which doesn't allow me to do 4g hotspot AND voice at the same time. Every time I get a voice call, the hotspot drops the 4g connection as if I was using 3g. ONce the call ends, the phone reconnects to 4g and continues on. I've brought both of these up to Sprint with no resolution as of yet.

is there any advantage using usb vs wifi? besides what you mentioned, but speed wise. is one faster than the other? or are they pretty much the same. i tether alot with wifi and i usually have my phone plugged into the wall charger whenever i do and notice it can get kinda hot sometimes. if there is no speed diff id prob go wired also

Speed is the same with 3g as for 4g I have no idea its not in my area :-(
Zulu have u tryed the wired tether app I linked to with a Mac? I'm going to have to test it on my friends macbook. I'm at my girls right now and the only pcs arond are both runing win7 32

I'm running SRF 1.2 w/Genocide 1.1. Earlier tonight, using qbking's excellent video, I used the Spring Hotspot hack. Everything worked perfectly and I can now wirelessly tether my Epic to my PowerBook G4. However, trying to do a wired tether is another story. Although my network preferences lists the Samsung SPH-D700, clicking "connect" doesn't seem to work. What happens is that it'll saying "connecting" for a few seconds, and then I'll get a pop-up reading: "Internet Connect A Modem error occurred. Please verify your settings and try again." Is there a proper way to configure the network preferences for this modem so that I can wire tether my Mac laptop to my Epic?

[Q] MK809 with 3G dongle and wifi tethering?

I have tried to search for an answer to this with no real success. I believe that it is possible to connect a USB 3G dongle such as Huawei E1750 to an MK809 such as Justop K9. Hopefully someone will be able to confirm that? Then I would like to know if it is possible to then share that 3G connection via wifi tethering to other devices.
Basically I'm trying to combine 3G modem and wifi router into a hdmi stick/dongle. If anyone has tried this I would be interested to hear their experience. If it is someting that is really not practical then I more than likely will give it a miss. I would need to use this as my "main" internet connection, although I wouldn't consider myself a "power user" I do stream youtube and online such as BBC iPlayer. I have had good experience with wifi tethering using my old HTC HD2 (flashed with android 4.0) and can get 4Mb connection speeds which allows me to stream no problem.
If this works well I would then be connecting a usb hard drive and using webdav server app to share the contents to my other devices.
I would appreciate any guidance! :good:
P.S. I notice that I'm not supposed to post questions in here, but I can see a few questions already within this section and it seems like the best place for this question to me. Mods, please move it if you need to.

I think it could be done as long as the router has a connection but just a bit of info, I watch YouTube quite a bit maybe 4-5 20/30min vids a day and in the past 7 days YouTube has used probably 12gig of data. Since everything is HD. I know a lot of dongles have data limits. IPlayer doesn't work great these devices for now you have to use the flash version and its a little buggy. Its best to get it from xbmc add on.
Oh and the 808 doesn't have tether not sure about the 809

It's a virgin media contract I'm looking at. Supposedly truly unlimited according to vm themselves and can be used to tether. I got my dad one and he uses it to tether his laptop and ubisurfer when away. It works very well when I've tried it myself.
Thanks for the tip about tethering on 808. I imagine this is just a software limitation? It was possibly never considered when the rom was built. I think there are Google play apps that will enable this on phones that didn't have it as an original option. I'm hoping it will work in a similar way.
Xbmc will be on my list. I assume it's possible to side load flash onto these things.

Can't answer your 3g question but just bought the mk809 justop k9 and it comes pre installed with flash. Have xbmc installed and it works brilliantly with streaming from my server, an app called tvcatchup and all the usual on demand add ons.

yes that would be interesting. I know that a lot of usb devices are supported. tried a webcam on it. Works perfect in combination with skype. for wath I read. its also possible to use a usb to lan adapter. maybe an option for the poor reception.
but a 3g dongle. got to see that.

Thanks for that. It is nice to hear a positive review about the Justop K9 as I was considering one anyway. This project might just save me some money having to buy other equipment. Would you be able to try whether you can install one of the free non root wifi tether apps from the play store? Obviously there would be no internet connection, but if you can establish a wifi hotspot and connect a phone to it then it's a good sign.
As for the USB to ethernet, I have a couple of those connectors spare. I'm aware you can use them on various android devices to give them an internet connection, but I don't know whether the reverse is true? Is it possible to share a 3G connection to the USB, and via the ethernet connection to a separate wifi router for instance? I can't find a good answer to that. I'm gonna have a play with my TF700 and see what I can accomplish!

No need to install an app, android 4 onwards supports wifi tethering natively. Just needed to go into the 'more' menu and set up from there. Managed to connect easily with my Sony Tablet but, as you say, couldn't browse as the stick wifi was being used to tether.
Spoke too soon on the on demand stuff, seems itv player, 4od and 5od have been messing around with their encryption so the xbmc add ons have stopped working, I'm sure the devs are working on it. Iplayer add on still works and there is a work around using firefox anyway.
