[Q] tether to ps3

OK, I know this is floating around a few places but it doesn't solve the issue without connectify which is a W7 program only. I've rooted, tethered, and would just like to update my newly ps3 software... i'm not concerned about multilayer games through my 3G connection... that can wait till i move this summer for internet..
so... can anybody tell me an XP program and can change the ad hoc to something my PS3 can recognize? I downloaded a virtual router and i have an Ethernet cable...
any help would be very grateful...

The PS3 requires Infrastructure mode (as opposed to AdHoc mode) therefore this is your only option:

If you have an XP (or most other OSes) machine within range of the PS3, you could plug the PS3 into the computer via Ethernet, and then connect the computer to the phone via the normal ad-hoc wireless tether, and use Internet Connection Sharing in Windows to share the WiFi connection with the Ethernet.
If you don't have an extra computer handy, the Verizon HotSpot app is currently the only other option, as it runs in Infrastructure mode (somebody should investigate how it triggers that... would be nice to have Wireless Tether/etc support it).

thanks for the info guys... i tried a few routes... first off was the PDA net paid version... with not luck.
so then i tried just using my tether in combo with a Ethernet connection and viola... i was updating my ps3. i did have some issues with connection, i'd lose it every ten minutes or so and then it became very unstable so some tweaking would be in order. most likely it's from the Ethernet cable i found in the basement from when i moved in???
I did send an email to the developer of Wireless Tether for rooted fellows and while he does have an option for some phones to connect by infrastructure, the fascinate is "Maybe yes... in the next release" so hopefully we can do this wirelessly in the future in a clean free app.

Hmmm... well that makes me wonder...
I would assume that means the 360 can connect via ad hoc... didn't see that one coming...
are there any particular setting on your tether app or anywhere else on your phone that would differ from stock startup?
like i say, the developer noted that the app wouldn't be able to do this wirelessly right now...

I was using barnacle, and read a review on this app where someone commented they used it for halo multiplayer. I dropped what I was doing and tried it, work first try. Maybe its t he xbox, barnacle would not connect to the xbox

The 360 supports Ad Hoc mode, while the PS3 (for some asinine reason) doesn't (PDA Net would also be useless, since it requires an app running on the machine, IIRC).
I definitely would be quite happy at getting Infrastructure mode in one of the tethering apps, since the Intel wireless in my laptop has absolutely horrible support for Ad Hoc mode (it couldn't even connect before I updated to the latest version... now it just drops it regularly).

I agree... as mentioned above i emailed the dev with tether for root and it sounds like he's working on an infrastructure option for the fas. It already works does on other numerous devices. If i see anything change ya'll be the first to know.

So this is an open question, that started with me trying to play music off my Galaxy SII on my A500. So far no luck, as the best technology to do this seems to be Wifi Direct, but that's only on the A500.
I can set up ftp , cifs, or samba shares, but they only work when both are connected to my home network. Not on many public ones and not at work, due to ports being restricted.
Are there any cool bluetooth programs I have not found?
Any way to use Wifi-Direct or some other direct link between the devices?
Or just any cool uses for two android toys that I have not thought of?
They are both rooted, with custom rom's and I am fairly capable, so a little hacking is ok.

Sounds like you need a DLNA server/player. AcerMedia supports DLNA shares, so you need to find a suitable server for your phone. As for the connection itself, public hotspots are no good for that. It has nothing to do with port blocking, etc. but rather a security feature called AP isolation, that prevents two clients connected to the same hotspot to communicate at all. My best bet is an ad-hoc connection (seeing that you are rooted) and DLNA streaming over it.

Download Crazy Snowboard. You can watch it on your A500 while controlling it using your phone, pretty sweet.

One cool little app I've found so far is TabletTalk - syncs SMS between tablet & phone (over wifi or bluetooth) and allows you to send SMS from the tablet. Particularly useful for me working fly-in/fly-out in construction as often there will only be a small area in my room where I can get reception so I leave the phone sitting there and can txt at will from the a500..

Perfect guys. Just the sort of stuff i was after. Tablet Talk in particular looks amazing. Thanks and keep then coming.

I downloaded tablet talk today after reading about it in this thread. App works great! A few months ago i got rid of my home wifi, have been using my phone as a hotspot. to get a good 4g signal i usually put my phone near a window, and obviously if you get a text it can be annoying to get up and go get your phone so you can respond. This app solves the problem conpletely! well worth the 3 dollar imo!

[Q] Wi-fi hotspot app for a T-Mobile HD2

I have the T-Mobile (USA) version of the HTC HD2, still with the latest stock ROM, Windows Mobile 6.5.
I think I once read here that the European HD2 came with an app to use the phone's 3G connection as a wi-fi hotspot to tether other devices to. The T-Mobile USA version did not come with that though.
It didn't matter to me before. I have often tethered my laptop to the internet through the phone, but no need for wi-fi for that-- it works fine with USB or Bluetooth. (I usually use the Internet Connection Sharing applet. Occasionally dial-up networking.)
However, curious about IOS apps, and not wanting to change phone carriers and pay high monthly fees to get an Iphone, I just bought an ipod touch 4th generation to play with. It's only kind of internet connection is wi-fi. That will work when one has a wi-fi Internet connection, but one does not have that everywhere. It may have BT to connect to a headset, but I doubt it could tether through the HD2 that way. It might be possible with a couple adapters to connect the USB ports, but I doubt it would tether that way either. (If someone has found a way to do either though, to tether an IOS device through a stock ROM HD2 via BT and/or USB, please let me know.)
However, if I could find a way to make the HD2's 3G connection appear as a wi-fi hotspot, I assume that would work, to tether the Itouch with.
Is there an app I can download for my T-Mobile HD2, to use its 3G connection as a wi-fi hot spot? (Just an app. I do not have time now to deal with putting on a different ROM.) Do you have a link to it? If anyone reading has used the app, could you review how well it works?

Since I posted the OP, I discovered the app WMWiFiRouter.
Is this one you link to the same app with a different name, or a different app? If the latter, can anyone compare the two?
Also, since the original (not T-Mo USA) HD2 had a wifi router buoilt in, created by HTC, would that app work better on the HD2? Any way to download and install that to the T-Mo version? (again, without any ROM flashing.)

Doubt Wifi will work as HD2 will be adhoc wifi & ios device will want infrastructure wifi ...
Only way I have managed it is connecting HD2 via Win 7 Notebook (USB tether) then use Connectify on my Notebook to setup a infrastructure wifi hotspot that works with everything.
Amazes me in this day & age & level of development that we still have to jump through hoop after hoop to achieve basic functions.
Really about time the big OS developers pulled their finger out & make functional OS's that connect & share between devices with simplicity.
Amazing how even a Windows device & Windows PC alienate each other ! Microsoft could of really jumped ahead here years ago if had a bit of common sense & innovative development.
I'm sure WP8 will sort it all out ! not :-/

I think it is pretty much the same app as the one you found is actually the one I use to use on my HD2 back when I used Win Mo. But for some reason I could not find it, the app I linked looks just like the one I use to use. Also I think the app you found is just another version of the HTC app.
At Mister B, first it is good to see someone with your expertise in Win Mo still hanging out an helping others, have you ever concidered applying for RC status? Also I had two buddies that use to come over and connect via WiFi off my HD2 with a iPod touch and a iPhone three. So maybe not all of Apple's I products are so stupidly restrained.

Done a google on adhoc & iPhone, seems is possible, never had any luck when I tried but next time I get an iPhone volunteer willing to mess about with settings a bit more I will give it a proper go.

So the Nexus 7 has some super sweet specs for that price point, but the one thing holding me back is the lack of an SD card slot. No, no, no, Google!!!
So I'm wondering if it's possible to work around this by streaming media from my phone (Galaxy S2, ICS + Touchwiz) directly to the tablet via wifi or bluetooth? I.e. the tablet connects directly to the phone, and not via a wifi network.
If not then I might have to pass on this tab, which is a damn shame because it looks so nice...

I was wondering the same thing. If this had a microSD slot I would have ordered one already.
The other thing holding me back is no HDMI output. Other than the “Q”, how could you stream video to a TV? Is that even an option??? I currently use my ipad to stream MLB.tv to my TV and this is a must for any tablet I own. I want to get rid of my ipad for the Nexus 7 but these two issues are holding me back.

no microsd card makes me glad i bought the tab2 7.0 when it came out 2-3 months ago.
i was planning on selling and buying this if it had it (due to nexus dev community), but that is downright silly not to have the slot.

I suspect you can set up a local ad hoc wifi network between the two.

Probably, but even if not, use wifi tether on your phone, give the tablet internet. then use the cloud.
Also, as I posted in general, use micro USB to USB for more storage

you can use wifi direct or you could set up ftp on phone then mount it on tablet

The cloud isn't an option for me as I travel on the London Underground a lot. No clouds to be seen down there, that's for sure.

Perhaps use the storage on your phone with WiFi hotspot and XLink to transfer files? I think that would work just fine.
I kind of wish it had more to offer, but then it would certainly cost way more too. So I think the options and alternatives will come, given the mass of people who will get this .

Yeah, I hate it that they didn't at least offer higher capacities. I'd gladly would have paid for a 64GB version. I wasn't going to get one, but then I figured that I may simply use it to read on or play games instead of store all my media. I think it would have been better if they had an microSD slot and included 2GB of system storage and 8GB card for data. That way people could put whatever sized card they wanted to on there. :\
I guess Google wants people to expand their imaginations.... Imagine how awesome your device would be if you had access to wi-fi on your commute.

Wifi Direct Might be an option as stated earlier. I haven't played with it yet though. Also don't forget the NFC Android Beam that was upgraded in 4.1 and also Bluetooth could also be an option. I'm going to head home and test some stuff on my Acer A500 tonight and see if some of this works.

Ok here's how i managed to transfer files from my phone to my tablet without needing to be connected to wifi/mobile data connection - and it's much faster than bluetooth (bout 3-4 min for a 500mb file. I wasn't able to properly stream video, but you can play the file as you download, so it's kind of like streaming only you have to delete the file afterwards.
1. Download FTPserver (free app) from Play onto your phone.
2.Turn off your mobile data connection and then switch on wifi hotspot.
3. Setup FTPserver (user, password, port etc) and make sure you check all the boxes for accepting connections.
4. Connect tablet to the wifi hotspot. Open up an FTP client (es file exporer or whatever) and connect to your phones FTP server. Voila; access away.
If you've already got plenty of space on your phone, it's bypasses the need for wi-drives and the need to carry around an extra gadget.
[update] Using Samba Filesharing (similar setup to above) app on my phone i was able to stream video over the hotspot, only bout 5 secs buffering before it started to play. So pretty good.
[update 2] The built in server on FileExpert allows you to stream - works better than the samba app which was a bit crashy when starting it up.

Bubbleupnp works for me.

Why does YouTube hate the internet connection at my house?

Hey Everyone,
I've seen posts about problems with YouTube constantly buffering on HQ and have tried every possible solution I've seen, but I'm still having issues. I am hoping someone can help me.
HERE'S WHAT IS INTERESTING... when I use my phone as a hotspot (T-mobile HSPA+) and connect my N7 to it, YouTube works absolutely fine, no buffering at all! What is up with that? The internet at my house is fast (Verizon Fios) and I can stream and play everything fine on my N7 except for YouTube videos. But, once again... YouTube works fine when I connect my N7 to my phone's much slower wifi hotspot! So, obviously YouTube (both the app and web browser have the problem, but the app seems a little worse) has a problem with my home internet connection. Does anyone have any ideas on how to diagnose and fix this? I've tried rebooting the router. The Verizon Fios box is a kind of "all in one" device, so I can't swap out another router. Is there any settings I can try, either on my N7 or somehow on the router itself (don't know much about routers)? Any ideas? The Nexus 7 is such a great device for watching videos, etc... it's really aggravating to not be able to watch YouTube videos on it.

You're not the only one buddy. It happens to me as well. It's really annoying. When I watch YouTube videos on my PC it's quick and on the n7 you know..

Thanks for the reply. I definitely realize that I'm not the only one. But, why does YouTube work absolutely fine on my N7 when I tether it to my phone (a much slower connection)? This means that YouTube CAN work on the N7. It just doesn't like some routers apparently, or something like that. And why does YouTube work fine for some people and not for others on the N7?

I doubt this is the problem, but your neighbors could be using the same channel as your WiFi. So their WiFi interferes with yours. You can download an app called WiFi analyzer. It will show you the channels you and your neighbors are using. It will also show you better channels than what you are on. You then go to the IP address of your router and change your channel.

Could be. Could even be microwave ovens or portable phones/base stations if the WiFi link is using 802.11b or 802.11g (or even 802.11n, depending), as they also overlap the same ISM bands that B and G use.
Resolving performance problems (as opposed to gross connectivity issues) is tedious work - the root of the problem can be in a very large search space.
With enough packet sniffing (tcpdump or Wireshark) you can sometimes ferret out network performance problems; but it's not for the faint of heart. Your eyes will bleed from looking at raw packet data without purpose-built tools. You have to follow the data where it goes, too - you don't know if the problem is delays as a result of small % of packet loss, or something more twisty than that. If the cause is a small % of packet loss, you would be looking for TCP segment retransmissions by the server, or duplicated ACKs from the client (tablet). The will occur along one link (e.g. WiFi) but much less frequently along a different link.
Sometimes problems can be detected by just looking at gross statistics on each network interface (e.g. /sys/class/net/wlan0/statistics/* on the tablet versus something equivalent on the router) - even easier to do if you can manage to clear the counters without rebooting as you can then run a "youtube test" right after clearing them to see if the drop/error counts are actually happening when you are using the app. Either that or just collect them twice (immediately before and after the youtube test) and use subtraction.
The OP might be able to prove it's not his ISP link if it is possible to use a OTG+USB Ethernet nic plugged in to the N7 (use ethernet to his home router instead of wireless), but I can't say I've tried this myself, and I suppose he probably would prefer not to spend money solving the problem if it can be avoided.
There are some tcpdump-based tools such as "Shark for Root" on the market. Not that using the phone itself for sniffing will be all that easier, but setting up a wireless sniffer is even harder and more expensive, and since the OPs router is an "all-in-one" box, the only way to intercept traffic off of it will be if it's admin tools allow you to dump traffic to a designated ethernet port. Not typical for consumer devices, but who knows.

To the extent that the YouTube app is unaware of which interface it is getting it's data from, that's a demonstration right there that the problem is probably not the N7 or the YouTube app. Could be your ISP or your home network.
Out of curiosity - does your phone do WiFi tether in Infrastructure Mode, or is this a USB tether? (afaik, the N7 doesn't work with ad-hoc WiFi tether... unless you've got some tricks up your sleeve).

I've also been having this issue since i got my N7. It happens on every single WiFi network I'm on. Using the web based YouTube doesn't help either. I was getting so aggravating today that i almost threw my tablet across the room.....

Thanks for trying to help! I tried the app you mentioned and experimented with changing channels accordingly. At first, I thought it may have been helping, but soon it came back the same. I do appreciate the help though!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write all that. I'm afraid most of it was above my head unfortunately. But, I'm trying to use your words to help me as I research at least
As for your question above, I think I may have used the word "tether" wrong. I just meant, when I use my phone as a wireless hotspot and connect to it on my N7 YouTube videos playback flawlessly, which seriously makes no sense. The wireless network at my house is much, much faster and I use it all the time to stream YouTube or hi-def movies to my TV (Netflix) without a hiccup. And my Nexus 7 streams Netflix as well just fine over my home network. It's just YouTube that is constantly buffering. Which would imply that it's the YouTube app... but, then why does the YouTube app stream fine when connected to my much slower phone connection? It's not making any sense!

I wasn't aware of it when I responded to your post. Seems like you are in good company. I didn't read that whole thread, so I can't summarize or tell you if there are any fixes. OTOH, given the number of people saying "me too", I wonder if it is an ISP issue - purposely throttling of connections coming from youtube.
