SD Card Problems with Android - Solution - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Other people have probably already discovered this but I thought I would share this information.
I was using an SD build of Android on my HD2 and had problems with it losing files during USB connection. I switched to a NAND build with data on SD card.
The corruptions on my SD card caused system errors, force closes and mismatching system UI numbers.
This got sooooo bad that I had resigned myself to buying a new (and bigger) SD card.
However, whilst browsing the ext4 partition threads I read about the Panasonic SD Formatter V2.0
Apparently formatting an SD card using windows isn't good enough for SD card standards. The Panasonic app sorts that.
So I copied all my files off, formatted the SD card (takes about 10 mins) with complete erase on the Panasonic app, copied them back and re-flashed my Android build.
I have now been using the card without error for over a week and am blissfully happy with Android on NAND.
Damn, I love this forum!
(Might still buy the bigger card though! )
Cheers,
GG

I had exactly the same problem, it began with corrupted files, constant errors, FC and restarts. At the end it was so bad that neither device nor PC could not read the card. Panasonic SD formater the only thing helped. However from the 2nd attempt, quick format didn't work long I.e. problems came back in few days. After full format everything seems to work OK. It's been OK for 2 weeks now
BTW card is Sandisk 8gb class 2

excuse my ignorance
but...how exactly do you use the panasonic reformatter? I downloaded it to my computer but after that i am lost. I tried to reformat sd card through usb connection but does not work i am at a lost now. Again please excuse my ignorance and be kind.

Put the sd card in a larger adapter card and put it in a laptop or external cardreader

Ive been able to put my sd card into a camera and format when I have had trouble like that and it worked.

SD Card corrupts with USB data transfer

When I do a data transfer between my Mac and my G1 running Cyanogen, the SD Card immediately comes back as corrupted. I am unmounting properly.
When I have the stock Donut on the G1 it works fine, no corruption.
Any ideas?
This used to happen to me all the time. I guess the card wasn't compatible with the phone. I was using fat32+ext2, fat32+ext3 or even fat32 on it's own and I was always having problems.
If it doesn't happen on stock donut I assume it's an issue with our ext partition (if you have one).
I would agree with you except I am able to 100% reproduce it on the 3 SD Cards I have. I am using this method to partition my SD Card through the console of the Cyanogen bootloader: http://androidandme.com/2009/08/news/how-to-manually-partition-your-sd-card-for-android-apps2sd/ I have rooted and unrooted my phone a few times trying to troubleshoot this and it happens every single time.
What happens if you only use fat32?
I've had issues w/ two cards, including the one that came with the phone. If you can, try a Transcend card.
I have not tried just one partition of FAT32 under Cyanogen. I am going to try moving a file via USB with Cyanogen 4.2.4 in a moment. If that corrupts the card I will try just a single FAT32 partition.
I have used the SD Card that came with the phone, an 8GB Class 6 Transcend, an 8 GB Class 4 Patriot (which I know have issue with the Dream so I don't really count that) and a brand new 8GB Class 6 ADATA.
I really appreciate your help.
It appears that the latest CyanogenROM (4.2.4) has solved my issue!
I have done a bunch of 1GB+ file transfers via USB back and forth with my Mac, created directories, deleted files, etc and it's holding steady (just one random reboot but I can't say if it's related or not).

damaged sd

I just switched from a 2.2 version of android to a gingerbread version on my hd2. The problem I am having is that now my phone says SD card damaged. It worked on my old version and is Able to be read when I'm in magldr and use USB mass storage but not on this android. I tried to format in android that didn't work and tried formatting with windows. I don't understand why it can be read sometimes but not others but would appreciate it if someone could help me get this to work or atleast get it to reformat so can be used. Thanks
What exact ROM are you using? Were you running any partitions(EXT3/EXT4).
Gpc_hd2_gingerbread_v1.7
No partitions
what did you use to try and format it in windows? search in the forum for the panasonic sd formatter or google it if you haven't tried using it already.
I have not tried the Panasonic SD formatter I will give it a try at work since my computer is down for the time being. What is the difference between that program and the windows formatting program though?
In simple terms, one does it better than the other.

You also have to consider d possibility dat ur sd card is losing it gradually...My previous 8GB sd card works flawlessly on WinMo but whenever i flash an android build (tried several, same result), it works 4 awhile then mounts as read only or as ur described, sd damaged...a quick 4mat wit panasonic sd formatter wakes it back only for it 2 repeat d process....
I bought another sd card and haven't had any issues wit it watsoever...my old 8gb card still works but i guess its 2 weak for android's constant reading & writing.
Im having the same problem. Card works fine in everything but Android on HD2, NAND not SD Rom.
Ive formatted form Windows but i'll try the Panasonic one as well. If not would a 16GB card be compatible or would it be too big?
The size isn't a problem as long as your phone supports it. Just make sure you format the correct ext size partitions etc...
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA Premium App
Is there a guide/thread explaining how I go about creating ext size partitions on SD cards & what size etc?
I run off a NAND ROM if that makes any difference?
Sorry i'm new to Android!
I tried the Panasonic formatter but it still says damaged SD. Still works in mass storage mdgrl or whatever it is. And asks to be formatted when I try to use it in XP

I have the same ROM & just keeps saying SD card damaged. I've formatted in windows & in the clockwork recovery tool but to no avail. I dont want to buy a new card just to have the same problem!
You should avoid using mass storage in MAGLDR.

[Q] T-Mobile HD2 having trouble reading it's own MicroSD card

We have a T-Mobile HTC HD2, it came with a 16GB MicroSD card.
Lately, the phone is having trouble reading this SD card, and ONLY this SD card.
Any other MicroSD card I plug into it, from other phones or other devices, it reads them fine, and if I plug it's card into other phones or devices, they read the card perfectly fine as well! I tried it in other phones, in usb microsd readers, and even using a sd adapter in my laptop's built in sd reader, digital cameras, Wii, and PS3. The PS3 was the only other device that could not read the card,
But when I plug the card it came with into it, now it mounts it and works fine for about 30 seconds, then unmounts it and acts as if there is no card inserted.
We have had this phone for a year now with no problems of it reading it's own card before, any idea why this suddenly started happening? The owner said he recently dropped it, but that doesn't explain such strange behavior as refusing to read it's own card while reading every other card just fine, and the card reads on any device I plug it into so it doesn't appear to be damaged either.
Have you thougbt about tryinv to reformat your SD card, maybe it has become currupt? You can use the default windoes format software or the Panosonic software, most prefer the Panosonic software. Just do a google search for it to find it. To use the defualt Windows format software just go to Start>My Computer> and find your SD card listed as a removable drive and rigbt click on it then select format. Make sure to make a back up of your data that is on it if you can before you format it, and do a full wipe not a fast format and use Fat 32.
I tried SD Card Formatter 3.0 but it didn't help, it also refused to do a full format, claiming my card didn't support it.

Hmmmmm that program should have worked, curiouse?
Here is a link to the download for the Panosonic SD card formating software. Give it a try and if it does not work hour SD card may have just played out on you. What for others here to post with more advice tough befor you just toss your card and get a new one as someone eles may know something I Don't. Also go to this post, I know you have not flashed WP7 to your HD2 but this may still help as it will wipe any acidental portition that was made somehow on your SD card. Plus itcjist helps hou cover all your bases.

Thats what I used.
Also, I know about partitioning a drive, the sdcard does not have multiple partitions on it.

Sorry about that I just googled " SD Card Formatter 3.0" and it carried me to another site.
As I said in my last post I just linked the post to make sure you were covering your bases.
If you tried the Panisomic software with no joy then it is very possible your SD card is ready for a funeral.
Bit don't just take my word for it let some more members post with their ideas. Sorry I could not be of any more help.

[Q] sf sd card isnt wp7 compatible how to revive it for other use?

hi,its my 2nd day having a hd2.
I think my card isnt comaptible to wp7
its a Rdata class 6 16gb card.
I bought a used t-mobile hd2 running on stock wm6.5
and decided to dual boot on wp7 and android
the thing is when I installed LEO70 ROM everything went well.
no reboots or anything like that showing incopability of the sd card.
BUT, apparently when I was going to prepare the sd card for partitioning as I read on guide I followed.
my card reader wont pick up my 16gb rdata class 6 card. OUCH!
even my old nokia phone rejects it and says its unformatted blah blah blah.
plugged it in again on the hd2 then went to zune and zune says 0 free space.
plugged the sd card again on a card reader and still no go.
tried another card reader and still it wont pick it up.
then tried another card reader.
this time it reads but for minutes and minutes for scanning.
no drive letter.nothing.
tried a 8gb card and ALL the reader picks up.
opened sdcard formatter and it wont pick up my sd card.
MAGDLR 1.13 wont recognize it too. all I head is the sound of a hardware being connected to the pc and that's it
please someone help me here.
I will be so glad if you could help me with this problem
I wont go back to wp7 again after I resolve this.the sd was working
how DO I revive the sd card for other use?if I canr use it for wp7
I dont wanna waste another card trying though.
note: Im currently downloading a stock t-mobile MR 3.14.531.1.exe
is this safe?and if I successfully install this will winmo 6.5 be able to format my sd? please I dont have extra money to buy another card cause all of my sd cards are being used by other phone.
thanks in advance
Get yourself a copy of SDFormatter. Put the card into your PC and run this free utility. You should then be able to do a complete format through Windows.
Your sd card is not compatiable. There are many threads in xda about this and how to format, copy partitions etc. THis thread is also useful giving you links for partition/format utility http://www.techienote.com/tag/technology
Format your card and use it for something else. Have a read of the threads in the wp7 hd2 forums, there are a few threads about which cards reported that work, I use a transcend 8gb class 6, works well.
ok thanks will try reading more
and by the way I have sd formatter but it really wont pick up my sd haha

what a shame.
another wasted money
Was reading earlier somewhere on here and they were talking about a low level formatter. Then format it using regular tools. What ever that is not sure but apparently it fixes some of these problems.

[Q] Can't format my sd card!

So about a week ago I downloaded new version of icecream tosti's ICS rom (v0.6) and booted into CWM to mount my sd card and move the zip file over. I noticed that it was taking longer time to move the file than it usually does but I let the process finish. I unmounted the card and went to install the zip from sd card but couldn't find it. I tried to move the file again and again but couldn't get it to copy the file onto the sd card. I tried moving files from the sd card onto the computer but that was not possible either. It wouldn't show me errors and complete the moving process but it actually didn't move anything. I thought there was something wrong with the sd card so I tried formatting it... no success!
I have used easues partition manager, mini tool partition manager, hp sd card utility, panasoic sd card formatter, tried formatting it through windows native options, used disk management, even tried formatting it through CWM but i kept on getting the same error, can't format. I was placing the micro sd card in a usb card reader and sd card reader in order to format it through computer. I have also tried using different computers but that didn't solve the issue. The problem is that every time I try to install a rom it reverts back to an older revision of the rom with old settings that I set before. It seems to me some how the sd card is locked in a previous state and it is write protected and won't let me format it.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can solve my problem or does this mean the sd card is gone and I have to buy a new one?
I have exactly the same problem after using NexusHD2-ICS-4.0.3-CM9 V1.3. It seems this sd card was frozen, nothing on it can be changed. If I copy a file to it on computer, it shows copy successful, but that file cannot be read, and if refresh it shows nothing have changed in the SD card.
Anyone have any idea about this?
I have three broken micro sd cards now, two from WP7 and this one from ICS.

I waited a couple of weeks for someone to answer on this forum and tried all methods possible to format the sd card or revive it somehow but no luck so just recently purchased a new sandisk class 4 sd card hopefully this one doesn't go bad either. I just wish I knew why it was happening so I don't repeat the process again and end up damaging the card.
Have you tried to format with MAGLDR and after it on windows 7 pc ?
I did that, also followed this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1283232
Contents on this sd card just refuse to change.
is there a solution to this coz im having the same problem and cant find a way to fix this
you can do it by this software's :
HDD Low Level Format Tool
MiniTool Partition Wizard
EASEUS Partition Master
Partition Wizard Home Edition
.
.
.
.
but i dont know how create swap and ext4 partitions on sd .
This happen because you formatted the card on the phone. I never recommend to format on the phone the cards but on PC. Try the application I posted on computer with FAT32 in 32768 unit size.
