[Q] Can't format my sd card! - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

So about a week ago I downloaded new version of icecream tosti's ICS rom (v0.6) and booted into CWM to mount my sd card and move the zip file over. I noticed that it was taking longer time to move the file than it usually does but I let the process finish. I unmounted the card and went to install the zip from sd card but couldn't find it. I tried to move the file again and again but couldn't get it to copy the file onto the sd card. I tried moving files from the sd card onto the computer but that was not possible either. It wouldn't show me errors and complete the moving process but it actually didn't move anything. I thought there was something wrong with the sd card so I tried formatting it... no success!
I have used easues partition manager, mini tool partition manager, hp sd card utility, panasoic sd card formatter, tried formatting it through windows native options, used disk management, even tried formatting it through CWM but i kept on getting the same error, can't format. I was placing the micro sd card in a usb card reader and sd card reader in order to format it through computer. I have also tried using different computers but that didn't solve the issue. The problem is that every time I try to install a rom it reverts back to an older revision of the rom with old settings that I set before. It seems to me some how the sd card is locked in a previous state and it is write protected and won't let me format it.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can solve my problem or does this mean the sd card is gone and I have to buy a new one?

I have exactly the same problem after using NexusHD2-ICS-4.0.3-CM9 V1.3. It seems this sd card was frozen, nothing on it can be changed. If I copy a file to it on computer, it shows copy successful, but that file cannot be read, and if refresh it shows nothing have changed in the SD card.
Anyone have any idea about this?
I have three broken micro sd cards now, two from WP7 and this one from ICS.

I waited a couple of weeks for someone to answer on this forum and tried all methods possible to format the sd card or revive it somehow but no luck so just recently purchased a new sandisk class 4 sd card hopefully this one doesn't go bad either. I just wish I knew why it was happening so I don't repeat the process again and end up damaging the card.

Have you tried to format with MAGLDR and after it on windows 7 pc ?

I did that, also followed this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1283232
Contents on this sd card just refuse to change.

is there a solution to this coz im having the same problem and cant find a way to fix this

you can do it by this software's :
HDD Low Level Format Tool
MiniTool Partition Wizard
EASEUS Partition Master
Partition Wizard Home Edition
.
.
.
.
but i dont know how create swap and ext4 partitions on sd .

This happen because you formatted the card on the phone. I never recommend to format on the phone the cards but on PC. Try the application I posted on computer with FAT32 in 32768 unit size.

Unable to format SD Card

Since upgrade to MCR 2.9 rom i have been unable to format my SD card. I had an 8gb class6 card formatted to fat32 when inserted says the card is blank and doesn't format the card, same with a new 2gb card.
any one got any ideas??
im still running MCR 2.8 and i seem to have the same problem. i am unable to format my sd card.
Hi,I have same problem after updated to modaco 3.1,I can unmount the sdcard, but after I click format nothing happenes, and I cannot install ra-recovery,maybe because a first problem...
Anybody know how to solve it?
Same problem here... i tried everything. im pretty sure this card is dead. It was a samsung and happened after i used iSyncr and removed it not "safely" -
Try to format the card with windows, trough your phone or, if i't not working, with another reader, like a camera or a sdcard reader.
Use this software to format it:
http://download.cnet.com/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html
Do a FULL format not a quick one. After you finish, format the sd card again with android and create your ext.2 partition if necessary.

Android installer can't read SD card

Hey everyone,
Today I mistakingly tried to update a Froyo ROM with an Eclair, and it messed up my phone. So I flashed the default Bell ROM and went to install the Eclair, only this time I kept getting an error that /sdcard/andboot/androidinstall.tar can't be read.
I've checked over and over and: 1) the folder location is right (in the root of the SD Card, all lower case), 2) the .tar file is not corrupt, and 3) the SD Card is formated in FAT32.
I have no idea what is going on, and I'm stuck with the default Windows Mobile 6.1 now.
Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks
same here
I'm actually having the same thing. Clean FAT32 card. 1 directory 'andboot' all lowercase, 1 file in that dir 'androidinstall.tar' all lowercase.
I see android detecting the insert of the SD card, but apparently it wont read it...
solved
After reformatting [and repartitioning] the sd card, what worked for me in the end, was reformatting it [yes, again] to fat32, making the directory, putting in the file, and then resetting the phone. My guess: even though it detected the insert of an sd card, it did not really mount the filesystem until after the reboot.

【Urgent】SD card become read only under android

Urgent!!!
I don't know if this is a bug or not. I used to copy files by selecting the disk drive mode. After that I will safely remove the device under windows before disconnecting the usb cable.
The problem is sometimes after copying files to sdcard, the SD card will become read only under android. For example I cannot copy or create files using file explorer. When using camera app it says "Unable to save file to SD card due to insufficient file permissions". When using album it says "SD card unmounted or not present".
After the problem occurs I cannot access the SD card via disk drive mode anymore, unless I physically removed and reinsert back the SD card.
The strange thing is I can still access the SD card in PC via card reader with no problem. I can also view the existing files in the SD card under android (eg opening .apk in SD card)
I tried flashing the ROM for 2 times and with a different SD card. Also I formatted the SD using Panasonic SD formatter and partitioned properly. The problem still appear after several access under disk drive mode. Million thanks!!!
I've noticed the same thing in the DL DesireZ v3.3 nand ROM...
But now since I've switched to skink_Clean_Desire_v1.0 I don't have the problem any more...
No problem solver I know... but just to confirm the issue!
It was also read-only when I had disk drive mode chosen and connected to my win xp pc!
so when I deleted files over the computer they still existed...
I always remove the sd card securely!...
hope this helps a little bit!
Memory cards get weak after awhile...Had d same issue with a Memory card...it works well on WinMo but messes up just as u described in android after a format n a few read & writes...Froyo has also been reported to ruin memory cards...Summary, there's no real solution as i've googled all over....My advice is for you 2 get a new memory card, capacity & class (d higher d number, d better its read & write speed) is up to you...I'm using a class (4) 8GB card n its been alright.
P.S. Stop transferring files via d disk drive option in android..stick to using memory card readers or d MAGDLR function (though some also report file errors with dis).

Thanks for your reply
But how come windows and wm can read and write normally but it doesn't work in android?
Also, I have been using NAND and its disk drive option to transfer file in Cotulla's desire stock Rom and there is no problem at all. Would the problem be related to app2sd since the card has a ext4 partition?
do a chkdsk on your micro-sd card. let it repair and then don't delete the LOST folder in your sd card. ^^ you will be able to mount as read/write after this

So is this a SD card problem or ROM problem?
Previously I had been using Cotulla Desire stock Rom for a month and the problem didn't exist.
I don't mind buying a new SD card if it can completely solve the problem. Thanks

Can't format my sd card

Hey guys so I tried installing Icecream Tosti's ICS rom v0.6 but it after booting up I saw that the previous version (o.5) was still on the the phone and all my settings and stuff were still there. I had done a fresh install and was confused. So I tried again but it didn't work and when I tried formatting my sd card it wouldn't let me.
I have tried many different tools: Mini tool partition manager, easeus partition manager, hp sd card utility, panasonic sd card formatter, and windows disk management but I kept on getting the errors, can't format. I plugged in the sd card into the computer via a sd card reader and a usb sd reader and even tried different computers but the same error popped up.
Just recently I booted into the rom and plugged in the phone through the usb cable. When I formatted using some of the tools above it showed me the format process was completed, but when I unplugged the phone and rebooted the phone the sd card reverted back to its original state and the sd card was not erased.
Does anyone have any ideas how to fix it? or is my sd card completely gone. I feel like it is just locked and write protected but I don't know how to unlock it since there is no switch on the side. I will really appreciate. Thanks in advance.

[Q] Rooting without internal SD

Hi,
I got a Galaxy Y from a friend and I was trying to MOD it. I discovered that the internal SD is not available... and no way to get it back. I tried to wipe data, hard reset, stock firmware upload with ODIN but no way to get the internal SD back. I tried ADB in order to try to push the ZIP files in a ROM folder but of course no permissions as it's not rooted.
So, no way to root my mobile without copying the files to the SD?
Thanks in advance
Joe
I dont know what you mean by internal sd - galaxy y 5360/6102 doesnt have internal sd - it uses a mico sd card to which you will find the slot if you take the cover off and look on the right hand side of the phone
place any files you want on the sd card either via card reader or usb cable
please note that questions should be asked in the question and answer section and NOT the general section

Thanks Marcus,
I did not know the mobile had no internal SD.
That's the kind of information that saves a lots of time and work!
Thanks again.

Ok,
I tried to use a Miscro SD on the GT-S5360 but there was no way to have it acccepted by the phone.
I formatted the Micro SD (Sandisk 2G) in many ways (full formatting) and it was mounted OK with all my other phones (Galaxy S, LG L5II, Huawei) but not for the Galaxy Y. I tried to format the card with the other Samsung too but it did not work..
I've read a lot around about the "blank SD" issue on many mobiles and tried some of the suggested tricks but with no luck.
So, assuming there is no way to have a MicroSD installed on the phone, I resume the original question:
- Is there any way to root the GT-S5630 without an SD card?
Thanks in advance
Joe
well unless your sd card slot is damaged there should be no reason why it shouldnt work
the sd card needs to be formatted in fat32
there best way to do it is to inset your sd card into your phone
goto phone settings
storage
unmount sd card (sd must be unmounted before you can format it)
format sd card
you can also format it via your pc using a card reader as long as its fat32 but its best to format it using the phone or format it again using the phone as sometimes cwm may have problems mounting the sd card if you use something else to format it
You might find universal root tools via google but the quickest most simple way is just to use a root zip file and flash it in recovery or cwm

Thanks Marcus, your replies are very quick .
I tried formatting the SD card FAT32 with different Allocation unit sizes, always full formatting, never quick.
The SD card is recognized as BLANK SD CARD (or unsupported filesystem) when inserted with the phone ON. The same occurs when I switch ON the phone with the SD card alredy inserted. The card is never mounted
The internal formatting functionality of the phone seems to be not working at all. The function FORMAT SD CARD is enabled but when launched it lasts just few seconds and nothing happens (the card is not mounted neither automatically nor by hand).
There could be some compatibility issues between the card and the phone and it could be worth to buy another SD to test the phone card reader again, but I'm not confident it will work.
Phone specs
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband: S5360XXMC2
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XXMI1
Thanks again

allocation unit size is I think 16 kilobytes but just select default - quick format is fine if the card is not damaged
you can try using mini tool to delete the partition on the sd card and create a new one and format it to fat32
you can then try reformatting it on your phone after
Mini Tool Download

Thanks for your help Marcus,
I tried MiniTool, with both FAT and FAT32 (the card is a 2GB card) but the result is still the same: BLANK SD CARD.
I will try to buy a new one tomorrow and see if it makes any difference...
Thanks again
Joe
Ok I got a new MicroSD today and everything seems to work fine.
Thanks again Marcus.

Joe
