Android 3.0 and Motorola XOOM - Xoom General

I don't know about you, but i find this kind of weird.
Nobody at Google says anything about Android 3.0.
CES 2011 comes and Motorola shows up with a tablet which only runs a bunch of hypothetical movies about the supposed Android 3.0 experience. They say they'll start shipping it on the 14th of February.
Doesn't it seem odd that with only a month to go they don't have at least a beta version to show at CES, just a bunch of videos and they plan to start shipping it a month from now?
Am i missing something here? I remember the Android 2.2 update for the Galaxy S as an example. They announced the SDK in May and many only got the update in november. So it took 5-6 months JUST to make an existing system work for the Galaxy S, not invent it. And now they are a month away from shipping a tablet with a stable version and they just have some videos..

They did a live demo

Sweet thanks for that. Thats the best video so far. All most all of them I've found are blurry cams of the demos.

Dont forget to watch the live stream today from the Google event.

Froyo for SGS in next few weeks?

Guys... please don't kill me!
I'm no good at news posts, and understand that this is probably fiction, but was more looking for confirmation or a better source if someone knows of one.
Here you go: http://www.blog.best-mobile-contrac...ash-and-froyo-arrives-for-i9000-galaxy-s.html
THe link states
As it so turns out, Samsung i9000 Galaxy S smart phone owners need to only wait “shortly” until the Froyo update gets released for the handset. While a specific date has yet to be delivered, earliest estimates place the update for a launch due by next week –or hopefully, earlier.

So, we could have Froyo before the end of July?

While it would be nice to get it so early, I wouldn't hold me breath.

Unlocked users also
Hello Guys,
I just ordered this phone unlocked. Since this is my first Samsung phone (I had an iPhone 3G) I am wondering if AT&T will push the update to me and since my phone was shipped from Hong Kong I would also like to know whether there is a download link from Samsung's site for patches and firmwares (official).
Side question; For those using an unlocked Galaxy S in the US, is there any 3G (data) issue you are noticing? how is performance and availability of 3G with 1900Mhz spectrum?
If your carrier doesnt push the update to you, you should be able to get it through Samsung Kies once its been released.
Well we can only hope for this to be real. Sure would be nice

If Froyo for the SGS will pop up during the next 10 days as this article says it might, i'll eat my pants and post pics.
It's pretty impossible, considering samsung past with updates.
That's there flagship handset, nothing stop them to change the history.
Ummm.... Yes there is something that will stop them... It's called "Paperwork".
We'll see, would be nice tho, especially when it comes with some new drivers/updates to iron out the little bugs
Im thinking in this, we shouldn't forget about Samsungs tablet device, which seems like a big Samsung Galaxy S. The rumour there is that is going to come with FroYo 2.2 right from the off.
Makes sense to converge the software, so there is a very real possibility Samsung have been working on a FroYo release for a while.

As well as the hoofing great big ones
While they are at it, why not
While I doubt we will see Froyo in the next week or two it looks like they may have had some models at the Samsung launch even running Froyo. I noticed in Phonearena's preview of the Samsung Vibrant they tilted the phone to the right and it went into landscape. Unless something has changed I thought this was only possible with Froyo so maybe they are closer to releasing it then we think. I can't post a link to the video because I am new here but you can catch the rotation to the right at the 19 second mark.

I didn't realize this was possible on Android 2.1 or is it just something Samsung added to the Galaxy S? If so I have to agree thats a pretty cool addon!
As much as I really wish it was true, looking at the track records, it is not very promising.

It is galaxy so specific.
Phone's great... But Froyo would be greater!

You people are wanting Froyo before most of us in the US can even buy the phone. I'm envious.
There was a demo video where the reporter was told that the demo he was holding was 2.2 but that it was not going to ship with it. This was the ATT Captivate version and I saw the article on one of the big tech blogs, but I can't remember which one. Anyone??? I remember reading the info and thinking why on earth do they have 2.2 on a demo device only.

Galaxy tab 2.3 when?

Hi all!
I am curious about when can we start using our lovely tab with a newer version of android... is there any comments?

Google has scheduled a press conference for some new stuff on Tuesday this week. It's generally expected to be mainly about Chrome, ChromeOS, the Chrome App Store and possibly a Google branded ChromeOS netbook. But who knows, maybe they'll slip some tasty Gingerbread in there too.
You are talking at least March before we see anything official for the Tab. That's just the way the cookie crumbles.

Unless we start seeing some custom roms
If the "Nexus S" really is just a slightly modified Galaxy S, we could be seeing some pretty functional ROM leaks for the SGS and SGT in the coming weeks.
Any way you slice it this time it will be Samsung first to the new OS party, not last like it was with the Galaxy S line.
It might be irrelevant but on the last update for the dolphin hd browser they included a fix for a UI compatibility issue with Android 2.3.

Looks like Google will release 2.3 soon. But Samsung may take its own time to mould it according to galaxy tab.
Ask Mr. Samsung. Could be almost the same time 2.3 is released to AOSP, could be weeks/months later, possibly never given Samsungs past history. I wouldn't expect it any sooner than at least a month after 2.3 is released for the N1 & the Devs as Samsung will need to customise it.

I thought it was fake and I still do. (I watched this video awhile ago, first comment too lol)
I think he recorded it,and rendered it as HD.
Obvious fake. And I don't think that there will be any update that allows the Xplay to record @720p too much time has passed since its launch.
If someday the Xplay can record HD video it will be thanks to the users that will make some kind of hack or unofficial update.
Yes my friend, we'll just have to wait, just like nexus one, i'm sure it will solve, but much later, cause it still isn't a proper custom rom 4 play yet (waiting for cm, who always done a v good job).

Actually it has only just recently been released to all regions and USA just got the 3G version for AT&T.
I also seem to recall the earlier reviewers models have 720p enabled on the tech blogs.
Sony on the Playstation side always tends to release upgrades that improve the systems but they hold back to enable it later rather than around launch time.
I am thinking now that most regions where it launched received 2.3.3 and .185 out of box that the next official big upgrade could include it.
still on 2.3.2 in Mexico, but it just came out not more than a month ago

We already have the upgrade available in Mexico... (I think it have been available for a week now).
just launch the Pc companion software from your PC when connected to the Xperia, and it will prompt you about the available update!
hopefully the 720p recording capabilities will be included in October's 2.3.4 update for the Play! Yey!
I dont think they should give 2.3.4 in the 1st place...its mostly for Google talk and the security issues which we already got in 2.3.3 and a hacked version of gtalk is also available...
They should put us to 2.4 directly and should concentrate on giving us 2.4 which is expected to come out in q4 of this year

Android upgrade for Google Nexus S ‘in weeks’

Google has confirmed that it will update the existing Nexus S handset to new Ice Cream Sandwich Android software in the next few weeks, but has also said that its original Nexus One is ‘too old’ for the upgrade.
Google’s Hugo Barra confirmed that the latest version of Android will be delivered as a free upgrade to the existing Nexus S handset “within weeks”. He said the search giant was aiming to get the software to owners of the previous flagship phone shortly after the release of the new Galaxy Nexus handset next month, well in time for Christmas.
Owners of the first official Google phone, the Nexus One, will not be getting the upgrade, however. Barra said the hardware was simply too old to run the new operating system.
Google launched the Nexus One, which was made by HTC, in January 2010, and closed the phone’s support forum on 1 November last year. Some fans, however, had hoped that aspects of the latest version of the Android software would still be compatible with the phone.
Barra also responded to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s attacks on Android phones. He had said that users “needed a computer science degree” to use Android.
Barra retorted that “Android, especially this new version 4.0, is an incredibly intuitive platform – the best one we’ve ever built. There are power user features, but there is no need for an instruction manual or a computer science degree”, he said.
Barra added that criticisms in some reviews about slowness of the operating system were based on one faulty device at the launch event in Hong Kong. Barra said the new Galaxy Nexus offered 60 frames per second and was “buttersilk smooth”.
“The operating system is thought through with the needs of the next three years in mind; it’s a wholesale revamp of the way people interact with the phone,” he said. “It’s something we’ve designed for the masses; it continues to cater for power users really well but the entry level users will be able to use it really well too and make the phone their own.”

Already running ICS on the Nexus S, but can't wait for an official version where everything works perfectly. ICS is sooo good!
Steve would know, as he is a developer with a science degree. He loves his company.

I think Steve equates common sense to a computer science degree. I should have a phD!
So its within weeks or in time for christmass? Cause the difference is quite big.
It's within weeks of the Galaxy Nexus launch. Which is early/mid November then a few weeks which still makes it by xmas. I am guessing the first week of December my NS4G will get ICS.

There's less than 2 months till cristmas anyways, so any release before that is counted in weeks, not months (plural).
I'm also guessing first week of December.
I can't wait for ICS. I'm particularly excited about the improved browser that will sync with Chrome.
The current stock browser is utterly stupid. Actually, can someone explain to me why the Bookmark tab organizes my bookmarks by order of most visited when there's already a "most visited" tab? What's the difference?
Just be patient guys!

Your most recently used bookmarks are at the top. It makes perfect sense to me. I like this behavior. Without the ability to make folders, it's a good way to present it to the user.
Dude....it's only 7-8 weeks to Christmas.....that's not so many.
Been using ICS through a ROM and man do I love it. I'm impressed by ICS and how smooth and nice looking things are, I'm using an ICS ROM built from the SDK and can't wait for an actual source ROM.
