I'm rooted, de-bloated, & de-binged running ADW (TW empty in the background). I'm looking to go a little further but don't want flash a ROM and have to go through setting up my apps/settings. What different kernels can I try with the stock ROM? I'm looking to up the performance of my phone with hopefully not hurting the battery life.
I did a search but wasn't able to find anything that definitively answered my questions. Thanks.
You can use any kernel you want. Stupidfast undervolted is all you need.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
While it's true you can use any kernel you want, you'll lose haptic feedback if you use a kernel developed for DJ05 or newer. In other words, if you use most any recent kernel. There are some older ones that still work well with DI01, like StupidFast 1.23 -- which you can get here: http://totalnerdity.com/sf/ (just scroll all the way down).
But honestly, I would suggest taking the plunge to DJ05 or DL09 now, early on, so you don't have to re-do all your apps later and can actually use new kernels. Besides, if you get Titanium Backup (available on the Market) it only takes a few minutes to restore all your apps and settings without any hassle.
Ok, downloaded StupidFast from the link above. I went into Rom Manager and restarted in CWM Recovery and did the install zip from sdcard. Was this right? My start-up sequence has no graphics except "Samsung" now but my kernel version is showing 2.6.29 and my quadrant score is only marginally better. Does this kernel allow over/underclocking? I assume I need setCPU for that.
Wondering if I should have just waited for whatever update is coming tomorrow....
Sounds like you installed it correctly. But keep in mind that you really shouldn't expect more than a slight performance gain based on non-Voodoo kernels alone -- especially since you're using a rather old kernel. If you're willing to give up haptic feedback in favor of a bit more of a boost, you could use the newer StupidFast kernels. That's up to you.
As far as underclocking goes, any kernel lets you do that (and the phone does it automatically to conserve power anyways). If you want to overclock, yes, you'd want SetCPU, but you'd also need to find a kernel that supports higher clock speeds. I'm honestly not sure where to look for DI01 kernels that support overclocking, though, because as far as I know nobody's developing them anymore.
OC is sort of a waste. If you want better responsiveness you need to go DJ05/DL09 for Voodoo5. There are also OC/UV Voodoo5 kernels. Also try putting ADW in /system/app and deleting TouchWiz altogether...
I think StupidFast 1.23, like pretty much all current kernels, supports AOSP boot animations (zip format, not Samsung's qmg). But I guess there isn't one included, which is why you aren't seeing anything at startup. Grab one of the ones linked here and put it in /system/media (with adb, Root Explorer, Terminal, or whatever).
edit: didn't notice this was in Development. Don't post questions here, post in General.

TouchWiz is Samsung's custom UI on top of Android. It is the launcher; your homescreens, app drawer, etc. ADW is another launcher that you can overlay on top of TW, or in place of it, which is what the other comment was talking about. There are several different launchers available, but the most popular tend to be ADW and LauncherPro
Thanks.. So if I choose another launcher. Would it perform better to deactivate or delete touch wiz. Or just let it run over top? And how would I deactivate? And could this brick a phone?

If you aren't familiar with a lot of this stuff, the best thing for you to do would be to delete everything off your homescreens, and cut the number of hoescreens down to 1, and then use another launcher in its place.
If you feel more comfortable with hacking up your phone, you can place the launcher's .apk into the /system/app folder, and then remove TW. Either way you should be fine

That is what I just did this evening. Hardest thing was finding where ADW was installed. All of my widgets needed removed and added to my homescreens again as well. That was more of just a pain than anything difficult. I moved the TW apk to my sd card. Running StupidFast 12/19 currently but depending on what tomorrow's update is I'm going to go to SuperClean and a JT kernel once I get Titanium backup mastered to make customizing and reinstalling my apps easier. Thanks for all the help guys.

What's the difference between the one WITH voodoo and the one without?
Voodoo removes the bluish tint inherant to stock epic... but in my experience it only works when the screen brightness is at 100%

Voodoo is a different color scheme that can get rid of the blue tint that bothers some people. It only works at 100% brightness so I don't really have a use for it. The I have never really noticed a blue tint with my epic. If you want to know more about voodoo there is a link in the MixUp kernel thread that has all the details.
I should also mention that I use Launcher Pro Plus instead of touchwiz and I replaced the tocuhwiz calendar with the stock AOSP calendar. For clock speed management I use the Overclock widget instead of setcpu.

I second this! I've had the Nexus One with Froyo CM6 and the HTC EVO with Froyo CM6 and the stock rom that comes with the Epic is an excellent performer. All I did was root my stock rom and install clockwork recovery for backups. I then installed the SDX App remover which backs up and allows you to remove any app that the phone came preloaded with. I then removed the apps I didn't want. I also installed ADW Launcher which I prefer over TW and the Epic performs flawlessly! I flashed all sorts of different roms on my Nexus One and my Evo looking for a speedy, lag free bugless rom. The stock Epic rom with 2.1 performs on par with any of those other two phones I owned with their custom roms. My Epic is quick and bug free! Sure it might not have out of this world stats but I do not even notice that in real world usage. Touchwiz is not a huge makeover and resource hog like Sense UI. People complain about the Epics apps and they want to replace them with AOSP apps. TW apps ARE AOSP apps they are just slightly customized so that can be branded as TW apps. There theming is a little different and I actually like their custom touches which I think make them just that much more usable than AOSP apps. It will take a killer rom for me to stop enjoying my Epic the way I have it customized it with the stock rom.
By the way you can also install the custom TW 3.0 which lets you customize the app menu and dock!

A rooted stock rom is fine to stick with provided you install superuser.apk and apply the fix to joeykrim's root method that allows superuser.apk to work. I made a post with the instructions in the forum. Otherwise you are running a rooted rom with no control over which apps get root access and that is just crazy. Also, there is no reason to stay with the stock kernel. The undervolted Mixup kernel will increase your battery life by at least a few hours. That alone is reason to use it over stock even if you don't want the other enhancements.
I retired all the roms except backed snacks. My fav and current set up is thee boss rom v.3 with mixup kernel and blue minimalist theme. I also use the paid version of launcher pro. My phone is quick and snappy and full of eye candy

I had some issues with the Boss .02... some force closes (which permission fixing didn't fix). I had no issues with either the Epic Experience or BUB'S AOSP roms... both are extremely stable on my Epic with good battery life and fast performance. Currently I am running the latest Epic Experience ROM with no major issues.

Then you have a working superuser.apk so you don't need to worry about that part of my post but the MixUp kernel is still way way better than the stock kernel on battery life and functionality.
My 2 cents:
I'm using Epic Experience right now and loving it. He's got a few options for those who want to customize things like the lock screen, kernel, LWP's and such. Plus lately he's been updating it like every 15 minutes! lol
The stock rom is actually really good too though. It was rock solid when I was using it. But I'm a ROM junkie so I had to go custom =P
I have a BELL DZ which I unlocked, rooted and did s-off. I then flashed it with Paul O'briens sense ROM but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Looking through the development section I notice that pretty much every thread gives very basic instructions on how to flash the ROM but some really make it difficult for a n00b such as myself to understand.
What is de-odexed and what does it do? What is zip-aligned? Many of the ROMs don't say if they are for G2 or DZ. Some of the threads are 200+ pages and it's impossible to find out if there are issues with the ROM quickly and easily.
All I want is to have the following:
-Overlocked to 1.4ghz (or near)
-Wake via trackpad button
-no normal functions broke (wifi, data etc.)
-Sense
-Bloatware removed
-No issues with battery life
Am I better with a stock ROM? Is there a way to get the OC and trackpad button thing without flashing a custom ROM?
alright i am here to help sir. while i do have a tmobile g2, the phone is exactly the same and i believe that the roms work for either phone.
1. if you are going to go with a sense rom, i would HIGHLY suggest going with Virtuous ROM. it is a combined effort with the wonderful devs of rmk and eViL D. the updates and patches are always coming, and the rom is nearly perfect. the thread is awesome and your answer is almost always going to be answered. one of the more favorite things about this is the kernel choices that is offered through rom manager and is always up to date with an update, or patches. there are 5 kerne choices that one allows up to 1.501 GHZ. if there is a problem with the rom there WILL be a fix for it.
2. and of course there is cyanogen. i do in fact love stock android, but i stick with the ROM above because i am really digging sense and all of its goodies. cyanogen has limitless possibilities with custimzations and stuff to make it your own. and always have the options of flashing tons of themes and stuff from people who make them, where there is zero themes going for the virtuous roms.
and to repsond to your waking with trackpad and such, there isnt a way to maintain that with just stock. you would have to flash the cyanogen bacon bits that allows it(i believe) which can be found in ROM manager and is easily flashable. either way you cannot go wrong with whatever you choose, but its all about what you prefer.
Another recommendation for a Virtuous sense rom. I'm running the 8.1 currently...it satisfies all the requirements on your list.
Thanks guys, going to look into the virtuous ROM. Would it be recommended to wipe my phone to go with the Virtuous ROM?
Are you using Rom Manager to do this?

Yes everytime you switch from one ROM to another you must do a full wipe (data, cache, dalvik) in order to avoid any issues.
Any of the custom ROMs should work fine on both the G2 and the DZ (unless the thread on the ROM specifically says otherwise), after all they are the same phone. The keyboard mapping is the only real different you'd notice, so this might need tweaking of the ROM doesn't automatically handle it.
As I understand it, apps that have been de-odexed, have effectively been put back in one piece so they can be more easily modified by the developer. Normally the apps are odexed, and have had some extra optimisation done to them which makes them hard to modify.
Zip-aligned is supposed to save RAM, I think ?
I for one am another upvote for Virtuous 8.1 Smooth as silk.
Rom manager will not work on my g2.I always get the red triangle. And have to pull the battery. How can I just start over.by the way I am rooted well I believe so.

I'd definitely recommend wiping. You can always back up your current ROM and everything else, so no worries.
Another +1 for Virtuous. Cyanogen was awesome and very fast, but Virtuous is as well. I can't get away from the social phonebooks either and the HTC Sense Facebook and Twitter integration is phenomenal. I thought I'd ditch it without looking back but I was sadly mistaken.
Virtuous wasn't slower as I expected either. It's very fast and very stable. I usually run around 1-1.2GHz with the conservative setting in SetCPU with only a couple profiles, mainly just one for things to cool down when the screen is locked. Works great and my battery is loving it too.
I've heard that none of the current ROMs support 4G. Is this true? ...and if so how much speed decrease do you guys notice?

Well, you can overclock, clear out cache files, remove ads in free apps. Run SetCPU to manage your processor or even use Wireless Tether.
You can theme it... but theming the stock rom can lead to some complications i believe...

You have a few options for a rooted phone.
1) you can leave it rooted without running a custom theme or ROM. With root you have access to use apps like wireless tether (tethering without using verizon's hotspot app), titanium backup (allows you to backup and restore applications), overclocking as some people has said (allows your phone to run at higher speeds for performance sake, mostly just to boost performance metrics.
You can also undervolt with the phone, which means just sending a lower power output from the battery to the electronic components. Some have said that this helps to improve battery life...
2) You can deodex your phone and then install themes for the stock Motorola ROM, or if you choose:
3) Install a custom ROM, and then install a theme that is built for the ROM. Different ROM's contain different setups and special options. Some look similar to the Motorola ROM (still have blur components), whereas other are blur free, and are more of a "true" android experience.
Dude unless you just absolutely Don't want a rom you should definitely install a rom.the phone performs so much better. I was scared to do it for a while but it is actually the easiest thing to do and it is virtually impossible to mess up your phone. The good definitely out weighs the risk!

Thanks for any help/suggestions.
There are probably some, but I've never looked into adding them to stock as CM6.1 and CM7 both have them integrated by default.
One thing I remember from trying to add these back when I had my Evo, is that it required a Deodexed rom to get to work properly (just from my experience). Trying to add these to the stock rooted rom on my Evo caused me nothing but headaches, and always seemed to interfere with other theme-ing. I just figured if I have to flash a deodexed stock rom, might as well just flash CM6 haha. Maybe someone can chime in that has successfully done this on the G2 though.
I looked for ways to add it to the stock 2.2 and in the end just went with a Cyanogen mod as it seemed like an easier option in the long run.

Most of the slowdown can usually be attributed to user error, or ADW. In my experiences, ADW is much slower in scrolling etc. than ADW Ex, Launcher Pro, and especially the stock launcher.
I'd say give it a try and see how you like it. If you don't, you can always flash back to your backup of your stock ROM. I just think when it comes down to getting notification bar widget controls, flashing a new ROM is actually easier than trying to get them on the stock ROM unfortunately.

CM7 is stable. Just make sure to do a full data/cache/dalvik cache wipe before you flash. You also need to flash the Google Apps when you install it so be sure to check that box in ROM manager when u install.
If you're looking to take baby-steps, I'd try CM6 first.
Results may vary, but I'm getting 40+ hours of battery using CM6 as opposed to 20+ on CM7. Same moderate usage.
Once a week I flash a nightly and give it two days before I restore to CM6 to get my GPS and battery life back. They'll have it stable soon enough. Just have to keep supporting our amazing devs.

I'm currently running Dark Revenge 3.0 on the EC10 kernel voodoo. I've flashed most of the current roms trying to find the best battery life I can find. I've read a little about AOSP roms. How do they differ from DR, SC and others? I don't really understand them. What kernel would I use? etc. I'm not going to try it immediately but I am considering it. Also, which one would be best for the Fascinate? Vanilla, Kaoscinate. Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.
Basically AOSP roms are pure google android, they don't have any of the additions samsung/verizon added. The advantages of that? Well no Bloat for one, but that's easily taken care of by Superclean.
Honestly the vanilla AOSP rom lacks alot of features.
MIUI has some extra and pretty cool ones (mostly just more in depth options in the menus) As well as CM7(kaosinate).
However the amount of stuff that dont work on those roms outweighs any of the extra features in my opinion.
Plus not all the stuff from samsung is bad, like the power options in the pulldown menu and the built in task manager are great.
The only AOSP Rom I've used extensively is MIUI, and my battery life was awful compared to running superclean w/ Ec10.
AOSP is pure Android. Its the most cleanest, stock, non-OEM version out there. Its like getting it directly from Google themselves. Only use the kernel that the rom says to use. Basically, SC and DR are stripped down roms of the original Touchwiz Sammy bloated roms that originally run on a stock GalaxyS device. AOSP is the unviolated version of Android.

I'm running Jt's vanilla froyo as I type this. It is by far the best rom I have used to date. I am using the aosp voodoo kernel. From what I understand and I could be wrong and someone please feel free to correct me if I am but Aosp is like a straight Google rom with no Samsung or Verizon crap bloatware (useless apps) or touchwiz framework. It's kinda like an uncut rom pieced together from open source and is much smoother and much better in my opinion. It's kinda like building your own car from scratch. You can customize it any way you want and optimize it. SC, DR and BH roms are modified touchwiz roms. Basically a completed stock car and some of the parts have been changed. They are great roms but the devs are limited due to the fact that they are touchwiz framework. Vanilla is pure. At least this is how I understand it and if I am wrong then I apologize. Hope this helped.

What would I have to do to switch over? Full wipe or just cache and dalvik wipe or what? What about voodoo, do I need to disable then re-enable or just leave it like it is? Does the kernel come with the ROM or is it separate?
So I may have screwed up but I went ahead and tried it. I wiped cache and dalvik, flashed the vanilla voodoo kernel then the ROM. It went ok til I started getting alot of force closes in a row. So I figured it had deleted the apps when I flashed so no big deal. I'll just download them with Titanium, but no Titanium and no Market to get it from. Now what? I can't download the apps and I'm getting force closes because they're not there.
You have to do a FULL wipe. Data/cache/dalvik. Then flash in this order: Rom-Gapps-Kernel. Use the voodoo or non voodoo from jt's vanilla thread. Disable voodoo before wiping then after full wipe and flash, enable again

I feel the need to point out that the 0327 voodoo kernel over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12422388&postcount=1
has in-call bluetooth audio working wonderfully, at least according to my earlier testing of receiving calls today with my BT headset.
It seemed pretty stripped of anything-verizon, so I'm still trying to figure out why I would want the AOSP kernel where some drivers still aren't working. Guess I'll stick with this for a while.
