having real problems here..
I Flashed harcores speedmod k12g on darkys 7.5 rom (great kernel and great ROM, may i add!) and lost USB connectivity to my PC - the phone just does not recognize that it's connected to a PC via USB - it merely charges as if it was connected to the wall charger. Even when connected in download mode, odin just remains blank!
Flashed a variety of roms and kernels, but the problem still exists.
Here's everything else i've tried:
- Full wipe/factory reset
- Turned on/off USB debug + reboot - still only charges, doesn't display that its connected via USB debugging
- Tried switching between all USB modes (KIES, media player, mass storage, ask on connection)
- Reinstalled KIES, USB driver
- Tried another cable
- Tried it on a friends PC - his SGS works on it but mine doesn't - only charges. Ditto when i tried odin on his PC
The thing is that if its a hardware defect, i can't flash it back to the original firmware and give it in for under warrantly because it doesn't show up on odin!
Everything else is working perfectly fine.. Currently running darkys 8.0 (wipe - had to transfer it via bluetooth. Took absolute ages)
suggestions please
UPDATE: ISSUE SOLVED:
ref: http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...stays-after-usb-disconnected.html#post2028045
The problem was indeed with the micro usb port on the phone - corrosion due to condensation, namely. i have a (bad) habit of using my phones as a music boom box while i take a shower (never again!). The steam from the hot water condensed in and corroded the contacts inside the phone. I then got an alcohol swab and carefully cleaned it out, and voila, it's now working as good as new!
thanks everyone for the replies!

You would need your original saved firmware or copy of the original not stock .
. Currently running darkys 8.0.
Dump that delete format and wipe everything undo lagfix etc .
install JM8 with 512 pit and repartition and see if its fixed .
Dont think its hardware more like rom **** up .
Have you looked at darkys bug reports/asked darky

How he can install jm8 without odin?
you need cwm backup of jm8 or another not modded firmware.

I've tried a full wipe and i've never used a lagfix with 2.2.1, and i would gladly install jm8 but, like i said, not even odin recognizes that i've connected the phone to the PC. The place where its supposed to be yellow remains blank, as if i havent connected anything :\
I asked around on darkys and hardcores threads and tried some suggestions, but it still didnt work!

You know how to package a rom via update zip? Download from samfirmware the jm8, extract the factoryfs.rfs and put it in an update zip. Then upload to the sdcard and flash via cwm.
Only problem is any one going to create the update zip for you...

You need to use magiciso to extract the files out from factoryfs.rfs. Refer to the video guide in the stickies over at the development section. Then use either jim panse's update script as reference to create your own update script. Need to be careful, cos there might be additional folders (example: /system/etc/init.d/) which your stock rom does not have, but in other customized rom it is included. Hope you understand what I'm saying.

UPDATE: the problem hasnt been fixed.. but today, when i came back to my phone after letting it charge with the wall charger, it was displaying the "connected to USB" screen.. while charging on the wall charger!
When i tried connecting it to my PC about a hundred times, it would still only charge without detecting that its been plugged in to a PC, but a couple of times a steering wheel and "car mode activated" would display in the notification bar.
Does this mean that it's definitely a hardware problem?

I am facing the same issue. Tried lots of options ,but still not working.
Can anyone share the stock ROM, in update.zip (Ideally DDJP6, but any would do)?

The link you've given is not working. Can you please provide the correct link?
So, your solution involves dismantling the phone and then applying alcohol or just apply from outside?
Also, my phone is getting detected as an unknown device in Windows XP machine with or without the Samsung USB driver installed . Was your phone doing that?

i didnt have to dismantle the phone.. just cleaned out the micro usb port on top of the phone. i got a really thin wire and wrapped an alcohol swab around it, and stuffed it inside the micro usb port to clean out its contacts.
And yes, before totally dying, my phone would get detected as an unknown device in windows.
good luck!

Thanks a ton !!!
It didn't work in the first try, and I was thinking it was beyond repair (or a software problem), but decided to give it another try(this time using just a cloth dipped with surgical spirit) and it worked !!

Hey All,
Currently, my epic is running DK28. I think something is physically messed up with the USB connection (this is my guess), since it never is recognized on any computer (tried multiple). Also, the options for USB hard drive or charge only never appear when plugged into computer.
SO, I am wondering if there is anyway to get back to DI18 via an update.zip mechanism. I am able to use SwiftFTP to get files back and forth from the SD slot. But since the USB drive is not recognized by the comp., Odin or the Samsung update tool are not options.
Wondering if there is any other suggestions out there for me,
Thanks
Also, since I'm running DK28, sprint stores will not operate or give me a new phone since its not the "official" version... already tried.
the only way you are going to be able to update is to get usb working (un/reinstall drivers, use a diff cable, use diff usb ports, etc) and either odin or use the eb13 update .exe on your pc
the only other option you have right now is to wait on a cwm flashable system dump but that will not give you the modem or other things that you will probably need...
so i say fix the usb issue...that is really your only option
I've tried multiple different USB cables, reinstalled drivers (on numerous pc's), and used different ports on those pc's. I think i'm probably SOL on this one.
here is a cwm flashable zip to take you back to di18. [Linky]
You will still need to put the stock recovery back after that if you are trying to go totally stock. I know the files for it are around here somewhere, and iirc they may be in the di18 odin tar.

Ok. Thanks,

I tried the update.zip and I get the E:signature verification failed. Installation aborted message. Oh well, thanks though.
Looks like I'm stuck with this one for a while.
Does USB work in download mode? If so you can use ODIN, if not the ROM is not your problem.
USB does not work in download mode either... get some error messages from windows, USB not recognized and such.
reinstall your samsung drivers if that doesn't work you have a big problem.
edit. Try another computer as well
Your usb port may have gone bad. My first epic usb wouldnt do anything after having it for like 30 days so the sprint store just replaced it.

Ya. I tried that. But since i'm stuck on DK28, they won't look at it. The considered it "rooted" even though it isn't. And wouldn't take a look at it. They just gave it back to me.

What are you selecting to flash the zip? If you are doing it right, there should be no signature verification.
Also, after flashing the zip, you might download the ota, but it won't install until you put the stock recovery back, too.
edit: Don't you have clockworkmod?

Most likely, the USB cord is the problem. If the computer tells you, the driver was successfully installed, then that's the least of ur problems. I had problems similar to what ur having (USB not recognized, doesn't recognize in Download mode, etc etc.) All I had to do was find a USB cord that worked correctly (the one that came with the phone is not reliable 100%) and all ur problems should be solved!

I wanted to flash XXKPE so I backed up with TiB and connected phone in Mass Storage mode but the phone is not recognised. There is no sound of new device being connected. The phone charges but does not mount. Till a few days back everything was okay but suddenly this problem. Please advice.
Edit : I tried different cables and problem not resolved. Also connected Wave2 phone and it connects, so something in the phone. I feel the Legend-X theme which gives a sound message "Recharge Enabled" when I connect is somehow responsible.
I don't know if it will be useful but I would try to download Samsung Kies and reinstall drivers with it.

Maybe I can try but not sure if this is the problem. Normally when a device is connected, Windows makes a sound indication a new connection and then loads the drivers. In this case there is no sound but the mobile charges and also the cable works for other mobile.

I do not have any problem with it dude. This fw is stable among previous releases of gb but results are different on different devices. For instance.after flashing 8 -10 times, I could not root it the way others are rooting the phone. I had to use an agree flashing the cwm. Done ppl have kernel panic making it un usable. I donot have single kernel panic. So its not theme,.may be something else. May be others who are using the theme can opine.

You are right, it was not the theme, but don't know what was the problem. Probably the cable. Resolved by itself. Now flashed KPE and in process of setting up, can't wait to install your theme on this.
Hey guys...first post but long time lurker...ran into an issue maybe someone knows the answer to...
I currently have CM7 w/ the latest nightly working flawless. Im still rockin the DJ05 radio and i wanted to upgrade to the ec09. Followed the instructions on how to do it via Odin, phone off 1 button volume down to connect. But when i hit start on odin nothing happens...am i doing something wrong? or am i going about this all wrong and theres another approach after cm7 is installed?
Hm. Did you pull the battery before putting the phone into download mode? Does the device appear in odin? Put the modem file in PDA slot? Tried a different cable or usb port?

There is nothing your missing. My advice to you would be to try a different USB cable. Remove Odin completely and redownload it. Then it should appear. Also make sure you have downloaded the drivers for your device. It may sound stupid or whatever but it's possibly the issue.

I am having a problem with my USB connection, it's gotten a bit warped...probably from all my rooting and Odining! I can charge with it, but my computer will not recognize it. I have the Total Equipment Protection, so I should be able to get this fixed, but I want to return to stock before bringing it in. I would Odin the phone, but at the moment, because of the USB issues, Odin is not recognizing the phone. I looked for links to flashing Stock without Odin in this forum, but they seem to be pretty old. Is there I flashable zip file I can use in CWM that will return my phone to the current unrooted stock rom?

I don't think. So. Even if you could get full stock your boot recovery will not be stock. But I could be wrong. Which end is bad the phone side or the usb side. You can always try a different port on your computer and see if that will work. Worst comes to worse. You can brick it and get one tell them that you was having charger issues and. And you went to plug your phone into the pc and you droped it and it wouldn't turn on.

Doesn't the stock kernel remove root from ReRFS? I think I remember it doing so. Try it, there isn't much to lose. If that works you can just use the stock recovery .zip. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027904

Oh ok. Well, it definitely has power! Actually, I had a friend who had a similar problem. His phone was a vibrant, but they are pretty much the same phone. All-in-all, it was trial and error to get it detected. I would get it like maybe 1 out of 40 attempts? We finally returned him to stock via odin, but he ended up getting a replacement. Surely a hardware issue. The weird is though, the computer would only find the phone if it was in download mode? Anyways, keep your phone in download mode, and have odin open. First try to take the battery out, have the cable plugged into your pc, odin is still open, and put your battery in while holding the "1" button. It should boot in download mode, and MAYBE see the phone? Try that. Also, make sure the port you're connecting to (on your pc) is directly attached to the motherboard. Mess with different ports. Let me know if there's any luck.

Oh, it's a hardware issue. I used this cable, and this USB port on my computer, many times without issue until the other day. Even if I do get the phone to appear in Odin, I am not sure I want to flash it that way, as I am afraid I will lose the connection midway, and then where will I be? If I can run a zip file in CWM as mentioned in a post above that seems like a safer way to go, and it's easy enough to copy that to the SD card when it's out of the phone. I would like my phone to look normal before I bring it in. It will probably be a couple of more days before I do this, though. I am not ready to yet.

Yeah. You can flash a zip and return it to stock, but cwm will still be on there. The only way to return (officially) to stock would be to use odin. This would replace the custom recovery with the stock recovery. Depending on which modem you're on, you can flash a "stock" rom, and put tw launcher on it? As long as you have an updated backup, you can odin. Even if odin fails in the process, this will only soft-brick the device. And that is an easy fix. Just go into download mode and try again. Lol. My buddy with the vibrant had odin fail many times. We actually recovered from the "pc-phone" error screen. If you're getting a replacement, you must put it back to stock. Depending on which insurance/warranty service you're using, it is wise to play it safe. I highly recommend you get a replacement though. Just tell them you have a usb hardware issue.

My tablet has been working fine for as long as I can remember. It's unlocked and was running a rooted stock rom. All good so far.
I can charge the tablet fine. Thought I would try flashing Paranoid Android. Here's where my problems started.
Plugged the tablet into my PC to backup the contents of the storage, wasn't detected at all. No flicker of anything in device manager. Have hooked it up to a linux machine and watched the output of syslog to see if it was spotted there, but nothing.
Decided to not worry about backing up and did a full wipe, apart from system, to take it back to factory.
No difference.
Downloaded Paranoid Android via the browser and flashed it from CWM. Flashed fine, but still no USB.
Now I want to take it back to stock so I can send it back under warranty, but HOW?
Any bright ideas??
Is there any sort of USB drivers in your device manager relating to your tablet.
You need to remove those drivers, restart and re-plug.
If not, I'd try to download a flash zip, and flash it from the device itself, as you won't be able to flash it from PC if it doesn't recognise it.

The device is completely unrecognised via USB. Drivers don't even come into it.
Suggestions for where I can get a flash zip of the stock rom? As far as I can tell, it doesn't exist.
what about "fastboot devices" in fastboot mode?

Nope. Nothing. The USB port is completely useless for anything but charging now.
A friend has just flashed a stock image for me and sent me a nandroid backup of his tablet, going to try and get that onto it now.
And now I'm back with a stock rom, but custom recovery. Need to work out how to flash the stock recovery back from the recovery.img file.
All sorted. Used Flash Image GUI to flash the stock recovery.img back. Only thing I haven't been able to do is relock the bootloader, but I can't see that affecting my RMA.
They're picking it up in the next couple of days then should be no more than 10 days to get it back to me.

An unlocked bootloader is a voided warranty. In all likelyhood, they will reject the warranty validity and make you pay for repairs.

This is a situation I'm prepared for. It needs fixing one way or the other. At least I've given myself the best chance of a warranty repair. If it ends up costing, so be it!
Could be your usb cable. Happened to my nexus s!

Hi, so did you fix the problem and you PC is recognizing the tablet now ? I still have the same problem, the PC doesn't see the tablet, even as a unknown device or something else. Is the same as i do not plug it, the only difference is that is charging.
If you fixed this problem .. how did you do it ?
Hi,
Yeah I RMA'd it with Asus and they repaired it under warranty. It's still going strong now running CM.

Hi, do you know what they fixed ? What was the problem ?
To be perfectly honest, I think they just swapped it out.

I'm asking you because I have the same problem as you .. I changed the micro USB module but is still not working. I'm just asking what something else it could be.

If you have changed the USB port check the connection at both ends of the ribbon cable if they are both OK then the motherboard is at fault. The nexus7 has the worst protective circuitry I've ever seen on a device so its easy to inadvertently damage the motherboard.

Mine is on its way back for 3rd for this very same issue. So we'll see what they repaired this time or if they just replaced it. Hopefully the latter because my warranty is now up. Do they have a warranty period on their repairs?
1st Mainboard
2nd USB Assembly

That is correct. I received it back yesterday & the replaced the mainboard again. This time they put in a 8G board instead of a 32G so it had to go right back. I am not sure if it ever be fixed, there is something going on. I should not have had to send it in 3 times for the some issue.
