I've been looking and looking but I can't find a screen-shot app that doesn't require root. Does anyone know of one?
There's no way of taking a screenshot without root but you can install Visionary and do temproot. This way you can do screenshots whenever you want with whichever app you want and revert to non-rooted state with a simple reboot

The only way to take a screen shot of a phone is install the Android SDK and use the Dalvik Debug Monitor. If you are wanting to do it wirelessly you can always use VISONary.apk to temp root. You will not have to worry to much about voiding a warranty with VISIONary because as soon as you turn off the phone, you drop SU access.
He was already told what to do with using DDMS as he didn't want to, hence all the fanboys other than crying couldn't provide solution? Lol

My buddy just got an X10 - I'm very familiar with other android phones, but this one seems a little unique. I also noticed he is running 1.6.
What suggestions would you guys make?
Root possible? If so, what is the best method and custom ROM?
Are there plans for 2.1+ in the near future?
Any must have apps?
What are the safe apps to remove if root is possible?
You guys get the idea.. sorry for not browsing too much, but I can't learn a new phone in such a short period, especially when it's not mine.

Wow. Thanks for all of the help. I'm going to head back to my section where I would have already received help. For the record, he was sent a link to XDA about 3 hours ago... that doesn't mean I'm not going to try and help.

Members in this section don't like to go over what's already been gone over many times before, especially when you've stated "read some of my posts for the phones I do own, and you will see I acknowledge how bad it is to post without researching" but then do so anyway.
If your friend joins, reads, then asks questions on the numerous threads which answer what you asked then people will be more than happy to help.
I just started on this site within the last few weeks, and everything you need to know could have been answered with about ten min of reading, less time than it took to post your questions and wait for replies

Sarcasm?
Did you miss the first reply in this thread answering your questions...?
Whatever you do, if you root, don't delete system apps. (IE: Timescape, Mediascape, Dialer, Browser).
i read a thread, which i cant seem to find any more, about 'rooting' your android so that you can download any app for free.
there was two ways i read that it can be done, 1)downloading this app in the market, then just clicking a button in the app which then 'jailbreaks' or 'roots' your android and 2) installing it via USB..
does anyone know what the app is called?
or if someone can recall where this thread is, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advanced!
Ummm no.
Getting things for free is not what we like to talk about round here (if you exclude ROMs etc ). It is sometimes known as warez... or even theft.
Rooting is nothing to do with this. Very simply, rooting it is the process by which you can gain administrative access to your phone and enable options and configurability that you otherwise couldn't get. It also allows you to install certain apps that do not work on non-rooted phones. Most of the Android ROMs in the HD2 section are already rooted.
Ummm okay. Don't know what the above reply was about. You're looking for this (or similar)...

I can never find it on the market, so I always get it from here.

the reply that you mentioned is about the comment the OP made about thinking that you can get any app for free when rooting, nobnut was just mentioning not to ask about getting free paid apps.

But thanx for the comments anyways. This forum is extremely useful, and i don't want to jeopardize my status on it!

Thanks for the reply, but as you may have guessed, I am new at this, thus "root it" does not mean a lot to me.
By the way, saying "root it" to a bunch of Aussies might get you a few laughs in mixed company.
If you can direct me to any site or method with step-by-step procedures it would be a big help.
Tom
This is the easiest way
http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/10/how-to-temporarily-root-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-htc-glacier/
And titanium backup doesn't truly delete apps.
This method will tell you how

But deleting the wrong thing will handicap the phone.

i dont know why ppl just dont search the forums first...wow.
Rooting gives you a level of permissions that allow you to modify system files and play around with things in non-userspace. Relevant threads will have moer info on that, or you can peruse the Wiki (link up top).
Regarding the preinstalled apps, my advice is not to even bother deleting them. It's not entirely trivial to figure out what the phone needs to run, and you might find out later that something you removed all of a sudden is necessary again. Also, the stock ROM has frameworks and stuff installed by HTC that you can't get rid of anyway. I think it's much much easier to install a custom ROM that has all that stuff removed right from the start.
We call those apps "bloatware", I can't believe none of you told him this yet..... grankins post for s-off(he has two save the ultimate for if your having troubles) is the most affective, use his alternate method midway through his OP.

The reason i didn't mention the Ultimate Guide was he asked for the easiest method. That is not per-say the easiest method. But i know it's the most effective method.
I didn't suggest ultimate either, it was for a backup plan if no success..... I refuse to use gfree, as I have no need for it.

That is an option of course, but it even has several games installed as well as Amazon mp3 stores, Yahoo mail, Yahoo messenger, Rock Band, and other crapware I'll never use.
It is pretty unbelievable that T-mobile will not allow those things to be deleted (hence my original question).

I would root it, then install a custom ROM. 3 weeks ago I had no idea what root was either, but with the step by step walk through, I was able to do it with no issues. The development section will help you with basically everything you are trying to do.

if you download terminal emulator from the market and type:
SU (enter)
reboot recovery (enter)
it will also work.
But i believe you must need root access. cause you will get "operation not permitted" if you arent
Secondly, there is always ADB. If you are on windows its easy as pie to set up. just look here and then type "adb reboot recovery" and that will work as well. good luck!

There's no need to be rude. First of all, he clearly helps people judging by the fact that he has OVER 800 THANKS. You can hardly do that without being either a recognised dev or someone who really knows their stuff and contributes. You clearly don't understand what trolling is judging by your last post, and have you ever thought of the simple explanation that he came to the thread to give that specific advice, saw samsamuel's post and just decided to confirm that what he said would work? Now, you're undoubtedly going to call me a troll as well, despite having no knowledge of what trolling is, but I'm not. I'm simply a person with some common sense.

Think about it this way, people often will reply to a solution which they have tried with '+1 to this', showing that they have tried it and it works. Same goes for 'what he said lol', it shows you that that solution works. I never said that having 800+ thanks makes you better than someone, but it most certainly shows that a person is probably worthy of posting in the forums, and that they probably know what they're doing.
Anyway, glad to see you got your problem sorted out, and I realise I'm a bit behind here replying to an older post, but I just thought I should make myself clear as well
