I used to have advanced app killer and used to manually kill apps like crazy, but then I read that they actually hurt daily battery life. Do you guys still use them? It sucks to manually go into settings to stop apps. Discuss.

They are counterproductive with the new versions of Android.
Use watch dog to monitor for "misbehaving apps"

I have used Watchdog since I got my phone. It has twice alerted me that the browser was using extra cpus. It gives an option to kill the app right there so I did and everything was cool. Nice app.
1+ watchdog task killers were needed back in the day with 2.0 and below but android handles it pretty well nowadays
I only use it after boot up, but after that I only use it if I start getting lag.
Agreed. Avanced task killer and similar apps are rubish now days. Watchdog is Great because it alerts you about apps using top many resources.
New users and sales people tend to assume android uses ram like a computer does; the more free ram the beter. Android keeps certain apps available in ram so that its faster to open it you when needed. If the system requires more ram to function it will remove unused apps from memory.

i've with and without task killer, i always get longer battery life with, and have never had any issue's with using it.
No app killers period for me.

what are you talking about?
are you talking about a "killer app" like in a really great application? Or a Killer app, as in an application that can kill the processes running in the background?...

Don't use task killers.
Not only me but other people say the same thing if you search on the internet.
If you see the apps in the task list, they aren't really running in background.
Excepting the one which run as services ofcourse.
The other are in idle state not using CPU so, not draining battery.
If you are afraid because of the memory used, don't be.
Android will unload apps that are not needed when memory is required.
If the apps are in memory, next time when you start them you will be able to use them the next second.
If you kill them and then use the same app again the phone will use power to start the app and the delay will be bigger so, basically you will use more resources
If you don't believe me, download os monitor from market and watch the CPU usage for all the task and you will see that 95% have 0% CPU usage.

i have this apps called imusic from slideme application manager i look inside on it and there is a name task manager you can see whats is running apps.. then there is a name empty,foreground, service, and i have memory of 110 left after killed apps like foreground and service then my memory usage is up to 140.. then nothing is running on the foreground and service.... hehehehe

you can pretty much safely kill all apps that are listed in the app killer, if your disabling startup apps then thats a bit of a different story. My personal advice is to forget app killers all together. They slow down the performance of your android device and android already manages your memory and apps for you. Just let it be.
Is there something that will provide an enhancement to memory usage on a dinc that requires root. Like preventing apps from automatically running in background. Tired of using a task killer when memory gets down to very low levels.
Maybe a Rom that's efficient at doing this.
Anyone have any ideas?

+1 on autostarts. Instead of killing your apps, autostarts prevents them from starting.
And why do you need to kill these apps? Have they tried to injure you?
Seriously... you probably don't need to kill them unless one of them is acting up. The phone will free up memory as you need it.

I know the phone will free up memory as needed but I'm ocd about it and hate that at times it gets down below 40 and bogs the phone down. Tired of seeing apps start up by themselves. I used titanium to freeze apps but now don't remember what's frozen and what's installed on my system. Need something automatic and easier to maintain.

Edit: only bad thing is changes are lost at reboot just using minfreemanager

Hey guys I was checking my phone under the running services because my phone was slowing down. And then I noticed that my total RAM only adds up to about 280mb.. is this normal?

grab autokiller from the market and set it to optimum. keeps everything real smooth
Don't touch app killer/task manager. Android 2.2.x/2.3.x is perfectly capable of keeping track of the RAM.

I second that, do not use Task Killers. Google themselves and many other well known Android sites say to not use them if your on Froyo or higher.

reading about the appkiller which kills more battery life... is that the case with the built in app killer in cm7/deck 's rom?

in my nexus it is showing 345 mb. i am getting around 160 mb free
count me as -1 because i do feel the need to force close some apps in order to regain smoothness and speed.
Android memory management might be good but it's not always enough as it feels ok if you only have 40mb or less free ram but the launcher will probably become sluggish and lagging.
i'm new to android. on IOS there is a cydia app called "backgrounder". i loved it because it let me redefine multitasking rules for certain programs. for example, for most programs, i made it so that the OS kills the program anytime i exit using the home button. now is there such a program for android that would let em do this? i don't want to have to manually kill app everytime, i want to make the OS do it by itself for the programs i specify.
google searches say no, but i'm still optimistic so if anyone knows, please reply.
Android does a great job of managing running applications, there is no need to kill them. If you do the app will just have to reload your battery life would go down. Also the nexus 4 has 2gb of ram. That will easily handle multitasking

I have a question. Why? This isn't an iPhone. You have 2 GB RAM. Let the OS do it's thing. If you're really worried about it, use an app like Auto Memory Manager to make the OS more agressive.

not all apps in background are inactive though, some are actively running in the background and using resources/wasting battery life. i should not be worried about this?
You can do it straight on the phone under the development options in settings. You have to go into settings first and then phone info and tap on the build number until the tells you that you're a developer now. Then go into developer options and scroll down to apps. From there you can set it to do what you want.

Using more ram doesn't drain battery. Most multitasked apps that aren't services don't even waste battery since they are put into hibernate
