As it so turns out, Samsung i9000 Galaxy S smart phone owners need to only wait “shortly” until the Froyo update gets released for the handset. While a specific date has yet to be delivered, earliest estimates place the update for a launch due by next week –or hopefully, earlier.

While it would be nice to get it so early, I wouldn't hold me breath.

Unlocked users also
Hello Guys,
I just ordered this phone unlocked. Since this is my first Samsung phone (I had an iPhone 3G) I am wondering if AT&T will push the update to me and since my phone was shipped from Hong Kong I would also like to know whether there is a download link from Samsung's site for patches and firmwares (official).
Side question; For those using an unlocked Galaxy S in the US, is there any 3G (data) issue you are noticing? how is performance and availability of 3G with 1900Mhz spectrum?
If your carrier doesnt push the update to you, you should be able to get it through Samsung Kies once its been released.
Well we can only hope for this to be real. Sure would be nice

If Froyo for the SGS will pop up during the next 10 days as this article says it might, i'll eat my pants and post pics.
It's pretty impossible, considering samsung past with updates.
That's there flagship handset, nothing stop them to change the history.
Ummm.... Yes there is something that will stop them... It's called "Paperwork".
We'll see, would be nice tho, especially when it comes with some new drivers/updates to iron out the little bugs
Im thinking in this, we shouldn't forget about Samsungs tablet device, which seems like a big Samsung Galaxy S. The rumour there is that is going to come with FroYo 2.2 right from the off.
Makes sense to converge the software, so there is a very real possibility Samsung have been working on a FroYo release for a while.

As well as the hoofing great big ones
While they are at it, why not
While I doubt we will see Froyo in the next week or two it looks like they may have had some models at the Samsung launch even running Froyo. I noticed in Phonearena's preview of the Samsung Vibrant they tilted the phone to the right and it went into landscape. Unless something has changed I thought this was only possible with Froyo so maybe they are closer to releasing it then we think. I can't post a link to the video because I am new here but you can catch the rotation to the right at the 19 second mark.

I didn't realize this was possible on Android 2.1 or is it just something Samsung added to the Galaxy S? If so I have to agree thats a pretty cool addon!
As much as I really wish it was true, looking at the track records, it is not very promising.

You people are wanting Froyo before most of us in the US can even buy the phone. I'm envious.
There was a demo video where the reporter was told that the demo he was holding was 2.2 but that it was not going to ship with it. This was the ATT Captivate version and I saw the article on one of the big tech blogs, but I can't remember which one. Anyone??? I remember reading the info and thinking why on earth do they have 2.2 on a demo device only.
Well apparently the End of September has come and gone. So my questions is this, When will we get any update? I say end of October for the minor update and November for 2.2. Oh and guess what, T-Mobile UK missed their deadline for 2.2:
http://phandroid.com/2010/09/30/t-mobile-uk-misses-end-of-the-month-window-for-galaxy-s-froyo/
Amazing phone Samsung. ..yet this is just another thread of disappointment.
yep,
Either Samsung, Tmobile, or both really let us down
I say Samsung..since it's not their first time...but then again T-mobile don't have a good history either...looks like both.
Why blame everything on Samsung? Give me one good helluva reason. While they should probably deserve partial blame, T-Mobile makes the final call. If T-Mobile says no, then we don't get the update. Simple. Oh, one more thing, T-Mobile UK != T-Mobile USA.
I have no idea what the hell is going on with T-Mobile on releasing updates, but if it's quality over speed, then I will gladly wait unlike most people.
I'm angry at T-Mobile for not giving us any of the possible updates that Samsung made. It makes no since that the Vibrant has been out the longest in the states and hasn't had a single OTA.
I blame Samsung for lack of Froyo. If they can make it run on the tab, they can make it run on the phones. I can't be mad a T-Mobile for that considering no Galaxy S phone has an official Froyo update on it yet.
I wonder what's taking so long, the Tab is basically an 'oversized' Galaxy S (relatively speaking here). If it is working on the Tab it shouldn't take much to port it to the phones.
unless of course, it is held out on purpose so it would not cannibalize the sales of the Tab. Purely my guess.
Its not so bad that its late, its that T Mobile and Samsung haven't kept us updated. A small status or progress update would go a long way.

Second that
Do you not think them saying an OTA will be available soon, is keeping you posted? It was probably pushed back after that clusterfuck of an OTA for the Captivate.
I believe Samsung is full responsible of this situation.
Is not a secret that Samsung lacks on software support. Take the European Galaxy S the unlocked version. The devices came months before the Vibrant in the US and suffers the same stupid TouchWiz bugs and never got an update...
I believe we will be lucky if we see Froyo when Android 3.0 is available. (of course whoever still has a Vibrant by then).
For me that was my first and probably last Samsung device. Its a nice device but FULL of bugs with no a single sign of support... A complete let down for this high class hardware.

Samsung has managed to bork every single update for every US Galaxy S device. Even when they hit the deadline with the Captivate, it didn't fix the issue everyone wanted it to fix. Then, they release the update on other networks, only to tell people "Whatever you do - DON'T download this!". It's a joke.
Guys, relax! Samsung has been telling us that the update is coming "soon" for the past two months, so it's coming "soon"! In other news, the unemployment rates will go down to their normal levels "soon" as well!
/sarcasm
Yeah, its disappointing that the update has taken so long, but nothing to cry over yet imo.

Honestly we should have all expected this after how they handled the behold 2. I felt that a phone that was on all the major carriers would get tons of support, but alas....
Phone didn't work right on launch so bottom line it's samsungs fault.

This is what EVERYONE who had bought a Beyond, or other Samsung phones kept saying...
Basically that Samsung either breaks their promises, or doesn't deliver on them until way late.
I am going to start looking for a new device. This 2.1 phone should hold me over until the 3.0/Gingerbread devices start coming out.
I am not upset enough to avoid Samsung in the future, but HTC and Motorola will be my first choices.

And then it says there is no problem with sending out Galaxy S phones shipped with Froyo.

Updates will follow...
So, it looks like as of Sep 27, Froyo has been ready to be released to Galaxy S phones.
I would assume that Sprint likely has the update at this point. No doubt they'll take some time to add/test their bloatware. Here's hoping we see a leak soon.
i am waiting for a leak
You realize, of course, there's a difference between the international Galaxy S (that this most likely applies to) and the US variants (that it most likely does not). Not to mention there are differences BETWEEN the US variants themselves. I wouldn't take any document concerning a Galaxy S phone to be applicable unless it names the Epic or at least mentions CDMA somewhere.

Yes. It would still be a fair assumption that our build's development would not be far behind if not in lockstep with the build mentioned in the email. It would look very bad to have half of the Galaxy S phones running 2.2 while the others remained on 2.1. Samsung has done worse things though.
I'm thinking they wouldn't care too much about having the I9000 updated for a while before any of the US versions considering it was released a few months before any of them. I do agree that the Vibrant and possibly the Captivate will most likely see their Froyo release within a month of the I9000, but I'm thinking we won't see any action until a bit after that due to our CDMA radio.

CDMA has been natively supported in Android since 1.6, so I'm really hoping that doesn't become the case. There just wouldn't be an excuse for it and would be terribly bad form on Samsung's part.
EDIT: One thing that I thought Samsung did very well was, while making the phone available on virtually every major carrier, keeping the 'Galaxy S' branding on them all. I think that the update becoming available at different times for each carrier would serve only to confuse the consumer and really hurt the brand. Hurting the brand would not be smart while they simultaneously launch the Galaxy Tab. That's just my two cents though.
If anything they should hoard the updates until they're all done, and then release them all at once. Perhaps that's what they're doing and how the Captivate's leaked build originated. </speculation>

I read that Samsung is trying to update all Galaxy S (worldwide) at the same time. However, the actual time in US will be determined by the carrier.

FYI, this phone has no relationship to Galaxy S line. There are many Samsung Galaxy lines: A, S, U, etc. They all have different hardware.
One good sign is that they got Touch Wiz 3 in landscape mode.
I have a concern regarding future update. I recently read an article about a Samsung Galaxy K phone coming to Korean with 2.2. I'm just curious how long do you think Samsung with support the current Galaxy S platform? Or is this Galaxy K going to replace the Galaxy S phone and Samsung will drop support for the Galaxy S? Will we even get 3.0? Samsung promised 2.2 by the end of the year but never said anything about 3.0. Anyone?

Just read about Galaxy K. It's a lower spec than S series but with 2.2.
Samsung can't promise 3.0 because nobody has seen it. No manufacture has promised 3.0 yet. There are rumors about 3.0 requirement and if it's true Galaxy S satisfies it.
If Samsung can't deliver 3.0, I'm sure the dev team will. That's why I have bought Epic over Transform.
As you probably know last Month that Samsung pulled-out the froyo Update files of the Samsung Galaxy S from its servers due to Many System Bugs that Made the Android froyo unstable and laggy. And Samsung UK confirmed on its twitter Status that the Froyo Update is Coming on November on its Final Version and to All Network operators and No More Delays...No More pulling-out!!
We Got Some Information that the Release Date of the Galaxy S Froyo update for USA Carriers and UK Carriers is somewhere around 11th November,2010 as a FINAL Release Date. Worldwide release will follow in few days after the Official Release of the Froyo ROM for Samsung Galaxy S, which Means that All Galaxy S users Worldwide (Include Middle-East and Arab gulf users) will get the update on November along with UK,USA Carriers too.
Froyo rolling out in UK Nov 4
So The Update is Coming Finally and NO More Delays AT ALL... More Stable... More Smoother, its a matter of time right Now. As I always say "Waiting for the froyo to come-out, better than waiting for it to load!".

Hmm. My read of the actual text that Samsung sent out is not actually any different than it was a week or so ago: the i9000 will probably have 2.2 sometime before the end of the month, along with the rest of the UK/Europe. I really don't see anything in the "official" Samsung notice that indicates Verizon, or any other US carrier.
However, since the blog posts cite "Some information" for "somewhere around 11th, November as a FINAL release date" (How's that for ambiguous, "somewhere around", but it's also "FINAL"...), I'll be guardedly optimistic.
Make that HEAVILY GUARDEDLY optimistic...

I don't care. Wait before you flame, please...
I spent the last year with an Omnia, and I tried every possible rom on it until I found the one I liked/could put up with the missing features. It wasn't perfect, but I knew that a sweet android phone was in my upgrade future so I dealt. WinMo has it's flaws, but you can't fault the dev community for everything they did to make an ok device better.
Now here I sit swyping on arguably the best hardware on the market (other Galaxy S offerings aside...) and I have to say I really like it.
Voodoo-ed, de-binged, de-odexed, and de-TouchWizzed is way easier than trying a dozen roms on a weekend and adding .cabs from 100 websites to come up with a phone that still half the time didn't know where my finger was trying to press!
What does FroYo have to offer? Apps that run off the SD card? Flash? Minor, although it is a bit frustrating that by the time we get it, it will just about be time for gingerbread.
Guess I'm trying to say, the best stuff about froyo is going to get too us sooner or later whether VZW or Samsung give it to us or the very talented dev community here makes it happen. News that comes from them isn't why I log in here.

I'm sorry I couldn't help it. I wont do it again I swear.
Honestly I can't wait to see what magic the dev community creates with Froyo and the Fascinate. My thanks to all of you!!!
Hopefully what happened with all the Droid 1 releases is what will happen here:
Motorola (in this case Samsung) readies a build, gives it to VZW for testing.
VZW takes forever testing it, and either rejects or preps it for release.
The "hopefully" part is that, hopefully, in the meantime, the file gets leaked from the Samsung end and into our hands.
Not trying to be pessimistic, but if that first file didn't leak, Im doubtful that this one will leak early either
If Verizon decides to sit on the release at least we have US Cellular as a backup. In fact it seems like US Cellular does not waste their time with carrier customizations so they might just push it out the same day they get it from Samsung.
I used to be a US Cellular customer, my wife still is, they will not get in any hurry, I would not count on them for anything.

You missed the point of the post bud.
Verizon, or any carrier, does NO customizations, they have NO development (read: coding) teams. They don't alter the file they receive from the OEM (in this case Samsung) in ANY WAY. The bloatware you see comes with the build straight out of Samsung's repository, with the specs that Verizon requested. They take their sweet time for a multitude of reasons, and somewhere in that timeframe its held up for internal testing. Each carrier is different, but Verizon is notorious for being an extensive tester, and rejecting builds pretty often.
Bloatware that Samsung did not code....VZW did or outsourced. Hence people are arguing with you. You aren't wrong, but neither are you entirely correct.

I made this post to give some indication of the progress of Froyo, sadly most people want more or are intent on offering some type of dark cloud.
I know Froyo might not be released on the 11th, but at least we have a legit source of its progress. Hopefully around that time or before we will have a leaked build for testing and or roms (like some other devices). I'm sure thats when the dev section will take off.
well if samsung releases it Nov 11, dont they post the source up too, so we could have a modded version running before vzw does anything?

The press release never said we'll get it by the end of May. It only says the US will get it after Europe gets it(which will be by the middle/end of May). It also said the US variants of the Galaxy S will get gingerbread according to the regional timeline. In other words, they don't know yet.

Anyway, the Epic should be really soon -- weeks? -- since their second leak (EE03) is feature-complete and even carrier-bloated. The rest, who knows? I'm sure Verizon will be last though.

Just for future reference: If Samsung says anything about 'Galaxy S', they are not talking about our phone. Galaxy S = i9000 (the international version).
Any release dates you see are a total lie if we don't already have a leaked version. Once we've got a leak, it's still highly doubtful, but at least not laughably so.

Point out where in the press release they said 'US' They specified North America, and they specified nothing other than it's after "the UK and Nordic countries".
Also, go back and look at what they said when they first rolled out Froyo to the i9000, and then look how long before it came to the US in any form or fashion (and then, the Fascinate even after that). If history holds, we might get it somewhere around the end of this year (although I'd imagine it'd be an even lower priority for Verizon now).

US/Canada = North America.
Does Canada have an i9000?
Since we're seeing gingerbread leaks for the Epic, that may be an indication of gingerbread for our Fascinate. While Froyo still wasn't available for the CDMA Galaxy S variants, we were seeing leaks for the Epic along with the Fascinate during around the same time. If history repeats itself, we may see at least some leaks soon.
is froyo a requirement for gingerbread?
like when updating from DL09 it goes to EA28 then ED01/ED03. Why not directly to
ED0x?
if we see more versions soon, would this mean anything to us (other than just some fixes)
