I feel like the Evo just got left in the dust... - EVO 4G General

Don't get me wrong, I love my Evo, but seeing all these new Android phones just revealed makes it feel like the Evo is getting quickly outdated. The specs on all these new phones seem so much better than the Evo. Kind of sucks no longer being one of the best Android phones with the biggest screen. Nexus S, Droid Bionic, whatever other new phones there are, all with better specs than the Evo now...

That's technology for you.

Smartphones now are what computers used to be in terms of getting outdated.
Technically speaking computers are still outdated by time they come out or 6 months after but for people like me the improvements aren't enough to make want to switch. Personally I'm happy to upgrade my computer every three years.
However, I remember when the advancements in computers was such that I felt the way you do now about the Evo.
But look at it this way. Phones have a long way to go before we'll probably be happy to keep what we have for a few years. Plus upgrading phones is cheaper than computers or most computers anyway.
The Evo still has and probably will maintain a strong fan base and development community for a while so don't worry.

Yup New technology comes out every 6 months

That's how it will always be. Actually though, I was really excited that they're stepping up so quickly. It will make it harder for Apple to keep up, which leads to more high quality development for Android.

evo was dated the day it was released lol sad

Please explain what feature or features are missing from the Evo! Im not sure what more could be asked from a smart phone. Most of the new phones coming out just have sales pitch stats. Just like the HDMI out is on the Evo. I know alot of people with the Evo and not a single one has or ever will use the feature.
Just my 2 cents.
P.S. Android will always be pushed to have higher specs to improve performance when all that is needed would be Hardware acceleration.

Jason

give the evo some credit for effing sakes, sheesh
i can whip out my evo in public and i still get people questioning me.. sure, us enthusiasts think the phone is outdated but theres millions of people that would be in awe of such a pwerful big screen phone the evo is.
but thats technology. once they see we're willing to give up dollars for a 6month upgrade, then the manufacturers and cell providers will start dishing them out.
that time is now.. and the mobile market will now be much more competitive and will bring on more and better technology so we can CONSUME CONSUME CONSUME.

technically the evo is outdated. it's beyond 6 months old now. trust me as im already looking into my next phone.

The HTC Thunderbolt won't be released until the end of March, and it's only improvements over the EVO are an SLCD screen and a marginally faster processor. Considering the EVO will be 9 months old in March, I'm not too upset.
I was upset, however, when I purchased the Hero in Oct. 2009 and a month later the original Droid was released. For comparison proposes, the Hero was 9 months old when the EVO was released and the EVO was a big step up from the Hero, whereas the Thunderbolt is only a marginal improvement.
Therefore, you shouldn't be so down and out about these upcoming phones. Most won't be released until the summer, anyway.

Well said. And with the poster earlier, I agree it looks like smart phones are following in the steps of computers. Technology comes out so fast for them it's unbelievable, but I will be plenty happy with my Evo for a time to come. It's plenty fast for me. Same with my Laptop, about 2 years old now, but still works great, and why get rid of something that has no problems. It's just human desire to have the latest and greatest, but I'll live with it now. I got my Evo in November, plenty of time after it came out, and it is a HUGE step up from my Hero. It will have the power to do what I want with it, plus experimenting with it and always updating ROM's etc keeps it plenty fresh for me.

Welcome to the 21st Century.
When the EVO was available for retail it was already outdated. You are not a slave to the phone. There will always be choices.

I think I'm going to hold on to my evo until android rolls out a full hardware acceleration version..

Some people are never satisfied.

Technology moves fast and I generally keep pace with it. Thats the main reason I said I know im not going to have this evo much longer. If I have to switch carriers so be it.

Technology will always outdate itself after a little bit, but in terms of the new specs coming out, they aren't as rEVOlutionary (I love that little pun there) as the Evo/Incredible release of last June. Before those phones, people only dreamed of Nexus 1-style phones. Then the Evo and the Incredible came out and blew the market away. The Evo especially. Huge screen, 1Ghz processor, ffc, kickstand, a good amount of ram. We're going to get Gingerbread for sure.
So when you look at it, the phones coming out aren't as much better than the Evo as the Evo was to it's competition last June. I mean there were 512Mhz phones and THAT was the biggest phone. The Evo is twice that. The phones coming out now aren't twice the Evo.
Relax, you're phone is still high end and it'll be a long time before the Evo will be considered "mid range". That's why I bought one in January, because I know I'll still have it next January (unless something ridiculous happens, like I get rich and can afford every phone on Sprint).

The EVO came out months after the first 1 GHz phones (HD2, N1, Incredible, etc.).
Re: these new phone:
A single Cortex A9 core is about 25% faster than an A8, now add a second core. Then add the fact that the GPU is somewhere around 4x better. Then add 2x the RAM. Then add 35% more pixels on the display. Than add 16x more internal storage. Then add 25% more battery. That's what the Atrix is compared to the EVO. It's indisputably next gen and gaps it by a ton.

When Do you guys think the Evo 2 will come out?

Everyones being hyping the evo shift and quite frankly im not all that impressed with it if it had a front facing camera and at least 1ghz processor i would have though of getting it. Ive seen verizons lineup and I was pretty blown away especially the motorola bionic dual core processor 2ghz what?!!! Hopefully sprint will get their act together and say ok guys we need to release the evo 2 stat!

We will probably see something at ctia, so it can look like the big draw of the show.
Probably won't be an Evo 2... but rather some other crappy name HTC puts on its phone. I wish they named their phones better. It would be better for them in a marketing point of view, cause all of their phones just seem so random (they create the pool of Android phones with random names and bad GPUs, lol).
Anyway, I love my Evo, just wish it was better in some areas (screen, camera, GPU)... and that's all I'm looking for in an upgrade.
CTIA is usually where Sprint shines.

If anyone read any of the stats on the evo shift, they would clearly see it's better in every aspect (as long as you dont mind no Front facing cam, and 5mb rear cam). The 800mhz is wayyyyyyyy better than the 1ghz the evo has, has more updated software all the way around. So they made the screen smaller probably to accomodate for the added thickness of having a physical keyboard. You guys need to realize it's not all about the specs all the time.. HTC knew exactly what they were doing when they put out that phone.
There wont be a evo 2....there is supposed to be the htc sabor coming out that is going to be the upgrade of the evo....google it
^As far as I know the HTC Sabor isn't real. At least no one has said anything substantial about it, and certainly nothing has been confirmed (unless you read Ozcarguide........)
Anyway I'm expecting to hear something at ctia. Not expecting an "Evo 2" per se, but at least a top-notch smartphone for sprint to lead with in 2011

No, it still is.
Keep in mind we're talking about Sprint specifically and not all carriers.
The iPhone rumors are just that.
And yes, it's just logic that [due to no CDMA exclusivity] the iPhone will come to Sprint at some point [and all carriers]
But the fact is that Sprint is going to have the next generation of phones come out in summer.
They always do.
It's more important now..more than ever before.
And it would just be the silliest...most retarded business decision in the history of business decisions to NOT follow up the highest selling phone in carrier history with a phone that is updated.
Maybe it won't be HTC, but you bet it will be dual-core and the same basic size etc of the Evo.

No, the Evo shift is actually slightly better than the Epic.
Although you're correct that the Evo Shift much improved over the Evo.
The Evo Shift IS better than the Evo, spec wise.
It has the updated core [top of the line til the tegra 2 series at CES]
It has a GPU 4x more powerful than the Evo's.
The core in the Evo Shift is 45 nm as opposed to 65nm [thus much better battery life with more power]
And, as I have said in the past, clock speed is irrelevant.
...much like the Pentium 4 3.06 ghz core is NOT faster than the i7 core that run at 2.53 GHz....

Their updates generally come in the Summer... [Pre June 09, Evo June 10 etc]
This is "delayed" versus say Verizon who gets them shortly after CES.

[Q] Best Android phone for Sprint?

I'm going to be changing providers soon to Sprint. I've been on T-Mobile for the longest time. Had a Nexus One but sold it due to financial woes.
Anyhoo... I'm looking at the Samsung Epic 4G and it seems to be the nicest phone I've seen yet on Sprint. I don't like the EVO, at all, and the EVO with a keyboard is too small for me.
Thoughts on Samsung? Thoughts on this phone overall? I have played with them a bit (a couple of co-workers have them) and, though I'm disappointed that they don't have the 2.2 Update yet... I'll live. I haven't had a smart phone at all for several months now.
I'll be getting it at the end of next week, if the Epic is what I decide on.
If you want a high end one, and you don't want the evo, get the epic. Otherwise, for sprint ID android, get the Optimus S.
Sent from The Chaotic Void.
Well, I have both the Evo and Epic, but I would sell my Evo before I sold my Epic. Just because when the source code drops for the Epic, CM6 +CM7 + overclocked- undervolted kernels etc... will make this phone shine like it should have been 5 months ago.

I see no difference. All manufacturers do it. Sounds like a double standard. No device has 2.3. I can name a few devices that have 2.1 or lower with a promise to update, and they all are coming out with newer devices.

The difference is that when this phone launched it was launched under the guise that it would receive Froyo in a timely manner. Now 5 months later they haven't updated it yet. The more phones they release, the less incentive they have to update older devices. They gain nothing financially from updating devices to newer versions of Android. A small percentage of people, at most in the high single digits, actually care/know what version of Android the phone is running. Even if they wrote off this group of people and these people never bought Samsung again, they gain business by constantly introducing new shiny phones for the remaining 90+% to buy.
That is why I am concerned with them releasing new awesome phones while ours remain on Android 2.1.
Regardless how long they took they still kept their end of the bargain. Look st the mytouch slide. They are speculating someone after march for their 2.2 upgrade. So HTC should get the same flack. Yet I don't see it. Motorola did the same thing with the droid X. they brought out 2 devices with 2.2 while droid X users waited. See what I am talking about? People tend to promote another manufacturer without actually looking at times. They all do the same thing and sometimes it falls under the radar.
The best android phone for sprint is not the one I have (epic), but the one that has the best specs today. Don't believe anything sprint says about future software updates unless they put in writing with a specific release date. Sprint are the biggest gd liars when it comes to selling phones.

The epic is a much better phone but as you can tell with all the froyo post samsung and sprint cant seem to provide us with an actual update. That had never been a problem with any htc I have ever owned.
that's the only reason I say evo.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
If you can live without an official Froyo for an indeterminate period of time, or are willing to try custom ROMs, then go for it. The Epic is a great piece of hardware, I really like mine. Then again, there'll be some new hardware coming to Sprint in the near future I'm sure.. might be better to wait another month or two if you can stand it.
updates are nice...but if Google is really trying to push this gaming stuff, then thats when the Evo gets killed. They added a lot of things in Gingerbread for gaming but none of that is going to help the Evo out. The Evo with Gingerbread still can't play Dungeon Defenders while the Epic on 2.1 can...so really, Gingerbread is just an update that gives the Evo the Epic experience (because Gingerbread really does feel like 2.2.1 on the Epic).
And there are so many other things wrong with the Evo as well....main thing is 4G and battery life. The Evo doesnt even report the right battery percentages. You can be on 100% then go into recovery, come out of recovery and be at 96%...go back into recovery and come out of it and be at 98% -.-. The battery is also a slippery slope. Once the phone heats up, there's absolutely no way of cooling it down unless you stop EVERYTHING you're doing. And everything heats it up, and it only takes 20 mins of usage to go from 80 to +95 degrees. They do have the dev community and kernels, but the kernels only help with the sleeping (barely). They dont really help with actual usage because of the slippery slope.
Also the Epic is a true 4G phone. It treats 4G more like 3G than WiFi. With the Evo, once you connect to 4G, it runs nonstop, which is why people thought 4G was a guzzler and thats why I was afraid to use it on my Epic. but the Epic actually times it out when not in use and starts it back up once in use, saves a ton of battery.
So Hardware: Epic wins
Software: Evo wins
Overall: Epic
Now the Evo wins software because of the updates and dev community, but let me put it like this....I had the Evo since August and since August Ive tried literally all roms and kernels...damn near every different combination...I followed every tip provided that promised better performance and battery life...and at the end of the day my phone was basically the same as it was out of the box. I was happy because I've never seen any better and thought that the Evo was the best out there. After one day of using the Epic, I can't go back. I just flashed DK28 and that experience alone is way better than anything the Evo has had to offer. Performance = top notch. Battery life = top notch. Its just perfect. This phone is simply perfect and I honestly don't think that HTC should be allowed to make anymore Android phones.

Let put it all in perspective here. LG, Samsung, and Motorola showed off their v10 and v12 engine cars. HTC add 50 hp to their v8 beast. God help me. Yet, either way anything Samsung comes out with no matter how great the hardware is will be crap. Hence the moment and current galaxy S models that still don't have official Froyo. ;p Sorry I had to take my frustration out on someone.
I have hopes the EVO2 will be announced in March / April. Because Sprint would be silly to keep it too quiet for long otherwise buyers will start looking elsewhere. This Summer some bad ass phones coming out. The HTC Pyramid on T-mobile, and hate to say this but the iPhone5 with 4" screen, dual cote, and a rumored major redesign of iOS adding notifications and widgets. If Sprint doesn't at least announce an EVO2 by June, I will seriously think about that new iPhone5.

I do LOVE my EVO, with Myn's RL5 ROM, this phone is a beast, and much better on battery life. But seeing these new devices announced, makes me wonder what we could be playing with soon, I am addicted to cool technology.
I don't want much in an EVO2, mainly a thinner and less bulky device, and hopefully improved battery life, and for sure want GPU acceleration, and a better screen to match something like the Super AMOLED.
But if Sprint keeps quiet on a EVO successor, I will seriously look elsewhere this June. Because come this Summer, the EVO1 will be outdated compared to the other high end devices from Apple, Samsung, Motorola...

Actually the best phone for 2011 will most likely be the Nexus-3.0 due out at the end of the year, it will ship with the newest Android OS, and have some amazing technology from what I hear. But if it is for T-Mobile only, screw that, their service sucks by me, and really blows inside buildings.
I hope the Nexus-3.0 is as future proof as the Nexus-One was, it came out with hardware that was like 6 months ahead of it's time. And I have heard that Motorola wants to get in on the Nexus game.
I am still thinking the top phones for 2011 will be;
- EVO2
- iPhone5
- Nexus-3.0

Unbiased opinion- This vs. iPhone 4 vs. Thunderbolt

I need to switch from T-Mobile to Verizon. I just simply can't handle the dropped data connection. Sure 4G might be fast on T-Mobile (in some areas I'm getting 5 mbps) but on campus where I'm at 90% of the time, I don't get data at all.
I've heard Verizon tops out at about 1.5 mbps. Can anyone here confirm or dispel that?
How does the Incredible stack up? I know new phones are on the horizon, but I saw that the Incredible S doesn't have much over the other phones already out. The HTC Thunderbolt is nice but it's also $249.99. The processors aren't that much different.
I do like the front facing camera. The Thunderbolt does have 4G though. So I was considering getting the Incredible now and then exchanging for the Thunderbolt when it launches. (I have 30 days exchange since I'm in California)
What do you guys think?
the processor is very different. it's 2nd gen and much more powerful. check out wirefly's presentation on the htc thunderbolt vs the evo. The thunderbolt destroys the evo.
I am a t-mobile convert for the same reason, except 50% of the time I didn't get any service at all.
The Verizon network, in my opinion/experience, is vastly more reliable than t-mobile's spotty coverage.
When I switched, I went to wirefly.com and got my incredible for $20 brand-new-in-box when I added a line to a family plan. The deal is even better if you sign up for a new contract; the phone is FREE.
I cannot say the same for the thunderbolt or iPhone. I owned an iPhone2g (orig), and the only feature I miss is the integration with iTunes seamlessly. But that's the only thing I miss (aside from the sleekness). I haven't had great experiences with Apples, but that could be entirely different for you.
The iPhone almost requires extra accessories off the bat, like an otterbox case to protect the back glass plate from shattering (which is common), and, of course, the "Antennae-gate" fiasco. Haven't heard if this was solved in the CDMA revision, haven't heard otherwise either.
It really all comes down to what you want out of a phone. The Inc and the iPhone 4 have been out for over 6 months, whereas the Thunderbolt is bleeding edge (New sense ui, new graphics processor, HUGE screen.)
P.S.: just to throw a wrench in your gears, look at the Incredible S. Can you say SEXAY??
I personally could not recommend the incredible cause it's becoming outdated fast. New sense ui, more ram, and better cpu are major improvements in the next batch of htc phones.
hell... being able to use htcsense.com with out a buggy desire z rom is worth waiting for.
I just completed my order for an HTC Droid Incredible.
Since I ordered today, I'll have until March 17th (February only has 28 days) to exchange it. I'm sure the Thunderbolt will be out by then.
If it isn't, I'll call Verizon and threaten to cancel my order and go to AT&T or something if they don't let me order a Thunderbolt to have that as my new phone.
Plus since I ordered with Best Buy, I get the Buy Back program for free!

You'll be able to trade out, and honestly (barring some ridiculous situation such as the T-bolt not lasting 2 hours on that battery or something else that would ruin its functionality) I would suggest doing it. The T-bolt's processor is LEAPS AND BOUNDS better than the Incredible out of the box, not to mention the ability to overclock to 1.7 ghz and remain stable. The GPU is very nearly twice as fast in the second-gen Snapdragon, and Sense 2.0 absolutely amazing as well. I love the Inc, its amazing compared to what I had (Eris), but the Thunderbolt (and upcoming Inc S) will be very nearly the same amount of improvement over the Inc.

no offence, but I hate that people do this. That's the exact reason VZW changed the return policy to 14 days, and I wouldn't be suprised if it decreases to 7 next year.
Yeah the Incredible is great, but it is becoming outdated, and VZW will stop selling in March I believe. The Thunderbolt seems nice, although slightly large. Just beware of those 4G costs. You never know the pricing The Big Red will put for that service...
Also the iPhone is nice option, if you dont want Android...
*Lets not make this a Apple bashing post btw guys.

No apple bashing. I just don't like them personally. lol
Honestly, I would own and use a Verizon iPhone 4, if it went on sale.
The screen is slightly smaller than the droid inc, but the pixel density is instantly noticeable...it's so rich and vibrant...
I think I would miss flashing roms WAY too much though, lol.
I personally switched to the Dinc from the Evo... the Evo was nice just rather large for day to day use ... the Dinc is a good phone I bought mine used online so no contract and able to upgrade when the new phones come out this summer

It's true that Verizons 3G typically tops out at 1.5 mbps. In my experience, its definitely good enough for web surfing, but really isn't great for tethering or downloading large files (videos, or app downloads etc).
yes, 2nd generation snapdragons are much more powerful than the 1st gen. Also, the gpu on the incredible isn't great so don't expect to play any graphic intense games.
I'd probably wait for a newer phone, they're right around the corner, unless you need one right now.

I don't agree with this at all. I've tethered and Skype'd for 3 or 4 hours with no issues whatsoever with the speed. The quality was not as great as my home connection, but it was fine for having no other alternative.
The incredible is an excellent phone. In all honesty, it anybody on Verizon would do well to wait until June to upgrade to an iPhone if that is the route they choose to go.
Android is an excellent platform, but iOS has it's virtues as well. Just depends on the experience you are looking for.
In my opinion, the Thunderbolt is not enough of an improvement over the Incredible to wait on it. At a certain point you reach overkill.
I'm surprised at the lack of apple bashing till now. I switched to an iPhone and I am moving back to android. I have an iPad for all my iOS gaming needs. I am done with the incredible though and moving to a fascinate.
To be honest, wait and see what the iPhone 5 is going offer (next few months you should start hearing rumors) before making a jump. iOS is only getting better and will more than likely have many of the features of Android without sacrificing build quality.
Good luck with your purchase either way.

I switched from a first gen iPhone on Tmo to the Droid Incredible on Verizon. I agree the service is vastly superior and I seem to get signal almost everywhere (save for my ground floor apartment, but thats not their fault.)
I was a little disappointed when I first switched phones though , something about Android on the Incredible felt cheap and I couldn't place my finger on it. Then while loading Facebook one night I realized it was just because there was zero lag time between hitting the icons and the application loading up. Weird right? Something about having that loadtime on the first gen iPhone made everything seem a little more substantial.
But that's all in the past, love the flexibility of Android. That said, I've still yet to see an Android phone keep up with an iPhone when it comes to standby battery life. As for waiting for the iPhone 5 - seems like it'll be the 4G update (awesome) but nothing else substantial.
The Dinc is still a fantastic phone though. It's very quick for general phone use and web browsing, it just doesn't have the most battery conservative cpu nor does it have the graphical capabilities for upcoming games. It's a shame that Samsung seems so hellbent to not support their phones, otherwise those would be great as well.

The incredible is too small, I am tired of HTC and I didn't like the Droid X. I loved the fascinate in my time with it. I am done with ROM swapping. You all's opinions aren't the only ones that matter.
I'm glad you all like the incredible so much, but it'll be EOL in a few months. The next thing I want is the iPhone 5, so to sate myself till then, the fascinate will suffice. Thank you for your continuing support of my phone purchasing decisions. Philly, do you not have anything better to do then travel through this forum stating your opinions as truth? Other people are allowed to have opinions too big guy. Froyo has been on the fascinate for a while, it's been leaked. And in my experience with it, there wasn't lag. Biased much?
Again, this brings me full circle to an original point. Asking this question here won't net you honest unbiased opinions. There are too many people who feel too strongly about android to give you the whole story. Do what I did, get the iPhone and see if that's what you want. Return it and try an android phone, you may realize like I did that android is too lovable to leave. I love my iPad and I will love my fascinate. It's the best of both worlds in my opinion. (it's ok if I have one of those right Philly?)

fascinate > thunderbolt?

im just wondering if any of you fascinate users have had a chance to use the htc thunderbolt yet? im running DarkREVENGE v3.0 eb01 on my fascinate and i really like it... is it worth the switch?
i was sorta hoping for a dual core phone but it looks like the bionic is the next one up on LTE... and thats moto with their locked bootloader, so it makes it really unappealing. i read that there should be a samsung galaxy lte phone coming down the road.. but after the level of support.. im not sure if id buy another samsung (even though the dev community is amazing!)..
constructive replies welcome.
thanks,
dave
Its not worth the upgrade, but it certainly is a better phone.
I concur. I'm going to take an early upgrade option in September. 4G and dual core should have more established options by then. I wouldn't jump now.

I don't know about it being a better phone because lots of factors play into a phone being a better phone than another. Yes, it is a more powerful phone but not really worth the upgrade right now since other more powerful phones are coming out later. Personally, I don't think I would ever want to own a phone that gets worse battery life than an EVO. I wouldn't even say the Thunderbolt is much better than the EVO at all. It's basically an EVO with 256 more RAM and terrible battery life (give or take some specs). In some instances I'd prefer it because of the support that HTC devices receive but my Fascinate is perfectly fine for me now.

with a next generation processor, gpu, more ram, I think the screen and the camera are slightly better as well, the body is much nicer looking too. Its much better than the evo, that's not up to debate. Its just not worth the upgrade at this moment in time.

Next generation does not always mean better. AFAIK, the next gen Snapdragon processors are on par with the current Hummingbird. The screen is also probably better on the Fascinate, same with battery life. About the only thing the Thunderbolt would have to offer is 4G and probably better source code and software to work from.
Well, I upgraded to a TBolt from a Fascinate and I have to say, it beats the Fascinate in almost every way. Sense is 20 times better than touchwiz. The TBolt does 1700 quadrant out of the box. The battery usage is better than that on the fascinate. It's just smoother all the way around. plus you get 4g plan now, it's unlimited for $30 and you get grandfathered in. And a word on dual core. The TBolt has been shown in tests to be as fast or faster than the droid bionic so that's that. Plus HTC supports their product. I am very very happy I upgraded.
My buddy just got one, and I'm jumpin ship once I have my upgrade. Battery isn't an issue for me. Plus, I am tired of Samsung and want to get rid of it asap. Think how sweet that thing will be once Cyanogen Mod is running on it.
The phone is nice. Plain and simple. Dual Core seems cool, but i'll wait another year before i jump ship. I think HTC makes a nice phone. They always have and will.
Hey Samsung... I hate your cell products and will never buy one again. EVER!
Hey Devs... Thank you for your hard work and all the love you have shown us.
I'm considering the Tbolt. I'm about 10-15 miles away from 4G right now, so it's really tempting. I'm hoping vzw will flip the switch around here soon.
I wouldn't even be thinking about the Thunderbolt if the Bionic was made by HTC or LG. As it stands, I will not support Motorola as long as they continue to lockdown their bootloaders, and unfortunately, the LG Revolution isn't dual core.
I'm tempted to pick up the Thunderbolt used on craigslist and then truly upgrade to the first dual core, 4g phone that isn't made by Motorola (would be nice if it's a Google Experience phone too).
I got my Fascinate one week after launch, 99% new for $350 (including a case and screen protectors!), so maybe I can get that lucky with the Thunderbolt.
thanks
thanks everyone for your thoughtful replies... i went ahead and ordered one.. guess i'll see. ill use my 15 days to decide... though i normally figure it out within about 2... ill post my results.
I recommended the Thunderbolt to my sister as her first Android phone, hope the battery life isn't too bad for what she uses her phone for.
I might see if I can get one since my Fascinate's earspeaker has been very staticy recently, or I'll wait until a non-Motorola dual-core phone comes to Verizon, then see if I can make the switch.
Soon as I get paid, this Fascinate is going in the garbage and I'm getting a Tbolt too. I don't care, I'll pay the entire $600 for it. I've always liked the Evo and, being on Verizon, couldn't get one.
I still, to this day, miss my HTC Droid Eris.
I'm sick of Samsung. HTC is the way to go.
Ill get any 4G verizon phone when 4G is more widespread. I travel a lot so if im getting a 4G phone, I want 4G speeds anywhere I go.
Glad that 4G will cover 2/3 of us population by the time I get my next upgrade. (October 2012)

I kinda feel the same way.
Those that got the Thunderbolt, how is the SVDO? That is one of the main reasons I may get one, other then the sheer lack of software support from Samsung. I am done with Samsung.
I bought a tb two days ago, and from the time I've had with it all I can say to a fellow fascinate user is definitely buy the tb. The best way I can describe this phone is....it just works...everything I ever wanted my fassy to do, this phone does, and it does it fast, and without being rooted and Rom'd....admittedly, the screen isn't as vibrant, but overall this is a great phone. I've had two motorolas one Sammy and now I'm wondering why I haven't been buying HTC the whole time...everyone waiting for dual core should probably wait another year before its really worth it...plus I can't wait to have this thing overclocked to 1.6 or 1.8. Bottom line....make the switch....sorry for the rant.
Ps. Thank you fascinate devs for all the amazing work you have done

HTC makes great phones. Samsung could learn a thing or two from them. They also support the software which is another plus.
A few things that would stop me from buying are things like the CPU and the screen. Those two would be a step down or maybe a lateral move. Plus the charger port being on the bottom when using the kickstand.. they should have thought that one thru a bit more. That could save us $$ on a dock but no.
I only like to buy new phones when there's a significant processor or some other hardware upgrade. I'll most likely go HTC next time especially if their screens can be on par with SAMOLED, but I think I'm gonna wait.

I drove using google maps and talking on my BT headset without any issues, it even transitioned from LTE to 3g without dropping my call.
I also have the fascinate, I dont regret getting the TB at all. Faster, better build, love sense (why does everyone hate it?) no more plastic toy feel, and better battery life.
Also my quadrant score is at 1890, much better the fascinated with lag fix and this is on a stock rom, and not that much lower then my xoom with dual core.
What's the hype about dualcore anyway, not like there are apps that require that much processing power anyway.
I've just started the first level of angry birds seasons to compare the colors between the devices, they look exactly the same with the exception of the Thunderbolt screen being sharper. You do not see the pixels like you do on the fascinate.
I think Thunderbolt is a great phone (I love Sense UI) however, I just don't see myself buying a man-purse just to carry that huge sucker around. I think its big and heavy enough to pull your pants down. My friend has an Evo and with a case on it, its as thick as a Bible.

I wouldn't count on being grandfathered in to anything. It would be naive to think they won't charge anyone more for 4g just because they signed up early. Once the tiered plans hit market they will force an upgrade on data by placing everyone that is"grandfathered" in the lowest tier. Just my thoughts of course, but I like to think realistically.
