My phone just turned off on it's own today. The minute I turn it on...5 sec. later it shuts down again. It continues to do this now all the time. I reinstalled the ROM from bootloader...no problem here
I don't think it's was the ROM (Seatone: SONE 2.1) as I went through Seatone's thread. (& yes, I hard reset after ROM install)
But what I'm trying to figure out is, which app was responsible for this event?
Last Installed APPs
• Magic Mobile
• SensorScroll v.05
Checked above APP threads with no issues that match...
Not saying it's the above apps but I'm just mentioning what things I did last in order to figure this out.
Can those who's devices went through this same phenomenon please share.
Ok, use a program like AdvancedConfig to edit the display timer and see if that works.
When it starts back up again, it doesn't even get passed the flash screen.
Don't worry about that, i've reflashed the device and everything is working. What i'm wondering about is what caused it to get like this?
Might be something was wrong in the rom, preventing the phone from charging. So it might just have been empty...
Just my 2 cents.
Anyone have any idea what may have happened here?
I was unexpectedly away from home, but using the device quite heavily, and didn't have a method to charge the battery.
Once the battery had drained to about 3%, I switched the phone off but I ended up needing to make another call. The phone booted, but all core apps returned a force close message. Phone, Maps, Google Account, all the main stuff... Other apps would launch and function with no problem though.
Thinking it may have just been a glitch, I rebooted the phone again thinking there would still be just enough juice to allow a phone call, but while booting, the battery totally failed.
Once I had a chance to plug in the charger, all core apps continued to fail, even though the phone now had plenty of power.
Even after a battery pull, the same issues continued, rendering the phone pretty much useless. No link to Sprint, no WiFi network, nothing...
The phone is rooted with v1.5.2 RC and Fresh ROM v1.0, so lacking anything else to do, I performed a Nandroid restore from a backup made about 2 days ago and that seems to have fixed up the problem. (whew.. I did not want to resort to the RUU)
But, I just can't figure out what may have caused this odd behavior in the first place....
Are you using apps2sd?
No, I'm not using the apps2sd feature.
The lockscreen text showed "No service" and the notification bar icon showed the same. The "phone" application was the only one that would attempt to restart after being forced closed. After a second fc though, it would apparently give up.
Oh, and just remembered one other oddity.. Once booted and all force close messages removed, attempting to turn on the mobile network resulted in a hard reboot. I really didn't expect anything since there was no service link, but I was just clicking various shortcuts to see what did or didn't work.
Good part is that a Nandroid restore saved the day, so it's more of a curiosity at this point to what the root cause might have been.
I wouldn't have thought that a battery drain could have corrupted the apps or prevented the root filesystem from mounting.
You probably had too many apps installed. It's a known issue with the Hero, where having too many apps installed causes a bunch of core apps to fail to load for no apparent reason. The phone losing power just caused it to reboot, which triggers the issue.

oddly enough I've had a similar experience. it was 2 days before christmas and i was doing all my last minute shopping. heavy use of the phone caused the battery to die, so i just threw it on my car charger. it booted, but REFUSED to get any data at all (i didn't run into any fc's, however). I rebooted it 3 times and each time the issue persisted.
I was running the AOSP 2.0 build at the time, so i flashed my backup of 2.1 and everything was fine from there...

Hmm, good possibility there. Just did a count and I do have 85 apps installed.
(whoof, I had no idea the number had gotten that high. just too many useful apps for this phone.
hi all,
i having my 1st Android phone (HTC Legend), but my set suffering Standby on Death (SOD), not sure if the right term. When it on standby, I not able to wake the phone; only way to remove the battery and on the phone again.
However, during it 'freeze' mode, try calling the phone; won't ring but caller doesn't get any engaged tone keep trying connect tone.
Please advise if any1 experience the above or any steps I can do.
** Try searching the web, only found SOD on Win phone.
Cheers.
Edit/Delete Message
The same thing happend to me yesterday, for the first time (I pulled out battery to reset it). I had a few random resets last few days, but I do use my legend for app development testing, so i'm not sure if i somehow provoked the problem.
Offtopic, but just looking at logcat output of a normally running Legend you get impression that there are a lot of unfinished stuff, especially HTC applications (news widget is terrible)
I'm also seeing the same random resets on my Legend. Not sure what when wrong. I have a bunch of apps installed but I don't know if this relates to any of them.
It happened again just now. Restarts on daily basis now
just make a hard reset
Ok. I did a hard rest. And i don't want to install any apps, let it run in vanilla flavor for 2-3 days and see if it happens again.
If it does, that means it must be caused by one of the apps installed before
I had some SOD's, but after a complete clean and reset to original setting, everything disappeared.
Maybe it was a problem coming from installed software...
clean reset, wiped out everything. reset after 15hrs of up time. i'm going to RMA this thing
Hi all - first post here...
I have not long had my first HTC handset - and I really like it, but nearly every day I get this 'SOD'...as described here.
I had to remove the battery to wake it up again only this morning.
I have noticed, that it only seems to do this when it can't recieve the weather data (under the HTC clock)? the handset never seems to hang etc while it has this data?
Have others seen this? Could it be a bug?
Why not bring all SOD threads to one?
As I see all SOD's are same on all devices.
There is bunch of symptoms but if you have sod than you are experiencing some or all of the symptoms.
General help is to hard reset few times than flash shipped ROM then hard reset again few times then flash your favorite custom ROM or leave shipped, and reset again few times. And finaly set network to GSM+AUTO in Phone band configuration. Or try to change SIM with another network operator.
All of this helped some people but there is many who did not solve the SOD with this nor anything else.
I know I am posting in more than one thread same thing and it is not double or triple or X posting it is just help request for people who could finaly understand what is problem and help us all.
Sory, and thanks in advance.
Weather is not problem on my device, I did try turn it off, disable auto update of everything .... no difference.
Even I leave it connected to USB and it have the internet connection all time and I do not have SOD, I have DIM of death screen dims not turn of and if I disconect it and pres power to go to stand by or to turn off screen I can not power on device until i pull battery out few times - 4 - 5 timesto be precise or sometimes even more.
I got a new replacement unit and it works fine since. I guess my old unit was really defective
Sent from my Legend using XDA App
I have had to have my handset replaced now. My SOD contiuned and then the Mic gave up and no-one could hear me in calls - made it unusable as a phone. I also had battrey issues where the phone wouldn't charge and the battery meter read wrong.
All seems fine with this replacement handset.....
Hello everyone, I've got an interesting problem that I want the experts here at XDA to help me troubleshoot. Feel free to ask questions as I know there's probably a million variables at this point with stuff installed, uninstalled, gps, root, task killers, etc.
alrighty with that said, I did the e-wrecked gps fix (changing the operation mode and server location+port). That seems to work great in terms of time to lock on my position as well as improved accuracy. Over the next couple of days I noticed some really choppy and lengthy phone start ups after the fix.
Eventually it got to (and currently is at) a point where it kept rebooting the phone, or at least touchwiz. It would load up, scan media, search for the network, do all the start up stuff, then lock up, and turn the screen off. Hitting the lock button/power button does nothing while it resets itself. Then it resets to the lock screen, the screen lights up and it goes into "searching" for the tmo network while doing the storage preparations, and other boot up stuff. It does not restart from cold (with the vibrant, tmo, and galaxy animations, only the lock screen and OS boot process)
Anyone else got any funky restarts going on, for whatever reason? I basically want to start seeing what would trigger this behavior. I started uninstalling stuff one by one trying to figure out why its doing that but sometimes it boots up fine, sometimes it boots but doesn't ever find tmo's network, and sometimes it just does the above.
Observations:
1. It will always boot up fine if the SIM card is out.
2. The last time it did it was today while I was at work, listening to music while the phone was charging. Im noticing that the phone gets pretty hot while charging and really hot if you're using while its charging (getting apps, surfing the web, playing games, etc)
So any thoughts from the tech gurus here? anyone have similar behavior in the past on other phones? is the heat affecting the sim card negatively? I can (and have) put my simcard back in my treo 680 backup phone with no issues whatsoever.
New observation, it consistently does the reset process as soon as the "Adjust Time and Date" as it registers/syncs with the network.
UPDATE: so, i did some research, ended up at the setCPU thread and saw that when set to OnDemand some people's phones experienced similar tendencies. Problem is, mine was already set to auto-detect and "Conservative". I un-checked start at boot, and tried again. Same problem. I uninstalled setCPU completely and my phone appears to be back to normal.
I'll update again if anything changes.
so one of the things that i removed during my troubleshooting was my corporate exchange account. When i added it back. it did its initial sync fine and gave me my calendar and contacts. I then rebooted and the problem came back.
I removed the account and rebooted. it went through two cycles of the restarts and on the third one, it worked. I left it alone after that.
I then was showing my friend some things (browser differences) and had 3 browsers open. It froze as i went to close Dolphin HD. Rebooted and now its back to the cycle.
Mine did this also. Installed several apps, woke up to find a slow phone. Resets galore. A quick reset to defaults and app restore fixed it, sans setcpu of course.
From XDA App on SGS-Vibrant
my phone resets itself also as described above, but not really doing anything in particular. i dont have a whole lot of apps installed. i even was using google maps the other day and after it started up the screen went black and the device was unresponsive until the screen came back and it said searching and the media scanner was running.
well first off thanks for responding lol. i thought i was by myself out here.
secondly, i found that if i leave it alone and let it go through its cycle, it does eventually boot up ok (this is recently, before, it was endless). i havent restarted my phone (im afraid to lol) since it did it on its own yesterday (showing my friend the browsers).
since yesterday, i've used it for navigation (motonav), serveral installs, downloaded podcasts, rss feeds, etc and its been ok (even while charging and wifi on). again, havent actually restarted it since yesterday because its actually functioning for once.
Lastly, i unchecked the auto update time and date from network in the settings just to see if that makes a difference because based on previous expereience that is the point where it freezes and resets. Thanks for chiming in and let me know if there's any other advice you have
I'd suggest a reset as mentioned above.
Been checking out this site for awhile but this is my first time posting, today my phone started to have this problem and it just bootloops touchwiz if i have a simcard in the phone.
It works fine without a simcard but my problem is it will not let me turn of auto update of time and date, i have tried disabling this setting and it just enables itself again. I have also noticed that if I started messing around with time and date settings even without a sim touchwiz reloads once. I guess im gonna give a reset a go.

sorry, noob question (i came from winmo and a touch pro 2), what does "a quick reset to defaults" mean? is that like a factory wipe i.e. phone will be brand new again, gotta root again and reinstall everything, change settings, etc?

Root will stick but settings and apps/app data will be gone. It briefs you on what is and isn't lost when you do a factory reset.
Smae problem, its setcpu!
SetCPU with any settings will do this.
It needs an update, the auto detect some how loses and
will set the cpu to 19mhz max and min.
This is too slow to process. I rebooted and pressed settings and uninstalled it
while I could. Seems to behave once out of touchwiz.
For me it was another app not setcpu I never used it. After i did a reset i restored all my apps with titanium backup and once i restarted my phone it looped again. So i did another restore and left off all the apps that i installed right before the problem started and so far i think for me at least one of these caused it
Google maps update
google translate
the extra language pack for translate
barnacle wifi tether
hero of sparta
these are apps that I installed right before the problem happened and without these my phone works fine I am going to see if i can find that one that caused my problem.
It's not the maps update because my phone works fine with it.
It was hero of sparta a gameloft game from there web market funny thing is its suppose to work on the vibrant while dungeon hunter which works fine would only give nexus as a check out option. Anyway im going to try to get a refund tomorrow.
I get the same touchwiz reboot but for me it has only ever happened while using google maps. I do not use set cpu, but I have applied the gps fix. It is more than a little annoying. I have done a system wipe but the problem persists.

yes, if you have setcpu, uninstall it - its buggy with the galaxys
- sometimes you can't wake your phone (if you set a screen off profile), forcing you to do a battery pull
- constant launcher restarts

and this is why i started the thread, to make sure i wasnt all alone. i have everything you have installed as well, but it was doing it before i picked up hero of sparta (and nova, and asphalt 5, man those guys make some good phone game lol).
anyways i just installed barnacle wifi tether yesterday so thats not it either (at least for me). That leaves the google stuff, out of the apps in your list, all of which were installed when i first got the problem, and are still on there after I've removed setCPU

ok so, contacts, text messages, etc stay? Meaning if i do a factory reset, root stays, and all app stuff can be taken care of by, say, AppBrain since it has a running list of everything installed and knows where to get it to install it again? I apprecicate the advice, but this would still be a last resort sort of thing. my phone has worked fine for the past few days but I also havent restarted it yet either
just a quick update, my phone still does this if i reboot my phone (which is never now that i got my 32gb sd card), but for the first time ever hero of sparta caused it to happen while the phone is on. I uninstalled it so we'll see.
This may or may not be related to anybody having the same issues but I'd like to report on a fix for this. This may or may not apply to you so YMMV, but this defenitely stopped my phone from rebooting randomly.
The thing that fixed my phone from auto rebooting by itself randomly is to go into your Play Store option and set Auto Update Apps to 'Update over Wifi only'. I had set it to never update. I can't get into why it happens since I don't know where to check logs but this does work for me. (Menu>Settings>Auto-update apps)
My story: Yesterday my phone reboots by itself every few minutes without even touching it for no reason at all. Phone had about 75% juice. I remember doing the unlock and had no problem with it for the whole day. I was at jury duty, boored and I was messing with options to restrict background data and changed the Play Store update options to Never Auto Update Apps since I switched to Tmobile and I don't have an unlimited data anymore. Afterwards the phone started rebooting by itself at various times during the day. I didn't notice until later on the night where it rebooted itself every few minutes. So I tried out various fixes which didn't work and set Airplane mode stopped the rebooting but wasnt a fix. After awhile I tried to retrace all the stuff I did on my phone during the day and strangely setting the option back to Auto Update Apps to Wifi Only fixed it. After doing that the phone stopped rebooting by itself and I was able to use it all day today.
So basically, see if setting the auto update to wifi only if you had it off will fix this.
Also I realize there are many different fixes other users have reported like the Power Cycling, Airplane mode or Clearing Dalvik and Cache(Which didn't work for me), or even reflashing/reset to factory (I avoided this). None of those worked for me. If those didn't work for you, try this as another option.
Mods: Please move this to Sprint Samsung S4 section. I have no idea why I'm in this section. I'm sure this applies to every S4 though.
