I contacted HTC and discussed the grounding issue my phone is experiencing (screen unresponsive when ungrounded.) I asked if exchanging would fix the issue and was told all incredibles suffer from it. I would just like to confirm that people have incredibles that function when touched with only one finger on an ungrounded surface such as the arm of leather sofa.
What exactly is ungrounded?
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
what is your phone set on when trying to use it?
If the object the phone is sitting on has more charge (and the phone is not in a case) than the object touching the screen (your finger) then it won't work. All capacitive touch screens work this way... at least, that's my understanding. I have never had the unresponsive screen issue, but my phone is also in a case.
path to earth
basically a non conductive surface (example leather couch arm). Mine doesn't even work on most wood tables unless i make a second point of contact.
I have not experienced it, and I tried on various objects after seeing videos of the problem, but it seems like it's a somewhat random problem. I think it has to do with the object having a static charge.
Are you in an very dry environment?
Edit: If you can use one, a case may help.
I'm on my second phone, both of them did it.
I just got my incredible last week, I love it but this is annoying me. The people at the store act like they have never heard of the issue and HTC said getting it replaced wouldn't help. I am considering trying the x or waiting on the fascinate, however I just want to know if and likely when i switch back, should i consider this flaw a necessary evil that goes along with owning this phone? would you say the majority of peoples phones work fine?
I've actually never had a grounding issue with my phone, though that may be because I have a case on it.
The only trouble I've had is the screen freezes when I wake it up, albeit VERY rarely. My boyfriend has the same problem, so I know it's not just me.
i hardly ever notice it. a few times i noticed it was this situation
i have the phone laying on my bed and i wake it up and try to unlock it (using the pattern lock) and it won't work or i have to try several times beacause it reads my touch as jumping around.
99.9% of the time though i'm holding the phone in my hand when i'm using it so i never notice it.
I may be wrong here, BUT. I think the 2.2 leak fixes it. i had the problem before the leak, sometimes when trying to scroll through apps or something with the phone laying on my bed it would think i'm long pausing on an app or it wouldn't scroll right. now it seems to be flawless.. only tested it for a few minutes trying to reproduce it, but still. usually it only took a few seconds to notice it.

could you test something for me since you have the leak? try a pattern lock and see how it goes.
FWIW, mine has had this issue from the start. Bugs me a little, but not enough to replace the handset.

my first incredible had the unresponsive screen, verizon replaced it and that one had it as well, I installed the leaked froyo and the problem is no longer there.

I have had the same problem you have had with both my bed and my couch. After reading the posts here I tried it and it seem that 2.2 has fixed it since I no longer have the problem. Not sure how thats possible if its a grounding issue but its fixed.
While I was unrooted, preparing to flash the leak, I went into the store and got them to exchange my phone. The new one works perfectly but i never tried the leak on the old one. I was told however, via HTC email, that it would not be fixed via update due to being a hardware issue. here is what they sent me. A stated earlier, my new phone now functions perfectly and my name isn't snoopy.
Dear snoopy
Hello snoopy, "Thank you for contacting HTC. I understand how important it is to have your HTC customized to your specifications. I am not sure which HTC device you are writing about, but there is an issue with the Androids. The touchscreen sensor is inconsistent, particularly when the phone is not grounded. Just putting a hand on the device grounds it just fine. This is a physical issue so updates will not resolve it. You do have the option to contact your provider for exchange. James, I hope I have answered your inquiry in sufficient detail. Please feel free to contact HTC at any time in the future. i was also told on the phone that exchanging wouldn't fix the issue, however it certainly did correct it.

How ever did you know that?. I just removed the places with my full name, not worried about being 1 in a million people with the name James so its all good.
I have twice now had my phone send text messages it said were going to one person to a completely different person. This wasnt like me clicking on the wrong thread in the Messages app. This was opening up a new message and replying to it, whereupon as soon as i pressed send the whole screen loaded a different thread where the reply i thought i had just sent to the original person had gone to this other random one.
This is stock deodexed 2.2.
Yes I have had this happen many many times. It is very annoying and I have learned to double check and check again where my message is going. Not good when they go to the wrong places. I am on Damage 3.5
James
I haven't had that happen to me yet but I do have a similar issue. When I open up a thread it opens another one that wasn't even next to the intended thread.

No bit my brother had that happen few days ago with his incredible.. I had trouble with receiving texts 15 later then when they sent the txt. Timestamp be earlier than when I got it. And sometimes the timestamp will say its from the future the next day lol. Asked a sprint Rep and he said its a HTC problem and will comeout with a fix. So far I'm good at receiving texts right away. Was bugging me out and gf would txt and say well must be busy all the time..

This has happened to me a lot, and I've had 3 different evo's due to other issues, so its definetly not hardware related. Mine will do the same thing, I will click on somebody's thread, type the message, hit send, then when it goes back to the main screen, I see it sent to someone else.
Let's just say I have sent some things that I THOUGHT was going to my girlfriend, but instead went to my boss. That made for an awkward conversation the next day.
thought I was going crazy. happened to me once when I was either cm6, or fresh, cant remember.
But I replied to recently received message, and it went to a completely different person. The problem was it was something private, that I didn't want the dude even knowing -.-
happens to me too. and the"tapped one thread and another thread opens " bug.
Ive always tried to handle personal things with calls, this is a good example of why.

I've never had it with Handcent *hint hint!*
I had this happen earlier to me but I just figured I made a mistake, I'll have to watch out for it from now on. It also started giving me an error saying Radio Interface Resource Shortage but when I tried to call someone it did something that cleared it up.
This just started happening to me recently too. Seems to happen most when trying to do to much too fast. For example, type a message, hit send. Then hit back before the message sends and trying to open a new one real quick. It pretty much happens like clockwork.
This is with handcent on cm6. All in all its a minor inconvenience.
This happens to me at least once per week. As a former BlackBerry Tour owner, I was already used to this sort of bug!
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9392#c1350
What proves that you lie? The next:
1) thread was created on June 28 and even was in search results 1 or 2 times for me or even on one tech website, but it is 6 MONTHS AGO, no EFFECT was then and during this period! FOLKS! 6MONTHS you keep your silence waiting? and now are yelling like sheeps?
2) all complaints appeared in OLD THREAD simultaneously on December 31, but you say that it was for a long time;
3) you name your devices every time without any detailes, the name of Device alone says nothing for bug fixing; this is ordered by your owner, TROLLS, to name all Android devices here to demonstrate the scale of your 'problem'; this addresses your claims to usual consumers, buyers, not to developers; you just need an attention of consumers, which buy devices, not developers who should find your INVENTED bug in REINVENTED thread;
4) you post here almost identical useless 3-4 words messages. DO YOU KNOW THAT THIS IS a developer's forum? detailes? logs? screens? descriptions? or you don't have a good another place from where you could scream?
5) you use the same words in all 3 places where ****storm should been created to make a feeling that these words are so obvious, but they are written down in your file on computer.
6) bugs are usually a result of updating or installing or some intrusions, you don't connect your complaints with any of your actions with Android OS or OS's changes on your devices.
7) nobody here don't try to really find a solution for 'his problem', because you just need a ****STORM, yelling, scandal; it says a lot about true your goals here;
8) those 2 resources from whose you came here are perfect for starting ****storms. theey are big and different to target different users- one is more glamorous and another one is more geeky;
9) you use term 'switch' and competitor's phones. Folks who experience a problem will not start their messages from the words 'I think about breaking my contract' or 'I'm switching'. You talk to customers/ buyers, saying this, NOT DEVELOPERS;
10) the idea for ****storm was found excellent, must agree: SMS is a basic feature as dropped calls during an important call, everyone sends millions of messages every day, half of them are so sexual and zesty that will cause firing and misunderstanding everywhere, even EMBARASSMENT!;
11) old retired idea about Google's privacy concerns is a very good sauce for such stories;
12) a slap into the face of openness- 'Look, Google, what we can do with your openness and your Open Handset Alliance!';
13) exactly before CES 2011;
14) tremendous growth of Android that needs ****storm to be able to compete better and to shine brighter;
15) just to create a proof for the words that you repeat on the internet as zombies about Android.
16) this thread was old,but once established and almost forgotten due to its uselessness, it just needed reinvention on December 31; this fact gave to this thread so bad-needed maturity to show that nothing is fixed from the 1st report; which also help push the theme 'Google doesn't care'.
17) if this bug was existing you wouldn't act as you act now

I don't agree with everything he says but the bolded are good points. [I don't think the guy speaks English]
Not saying that the issue shouldn't be resolved as fast as possible..
Just kinda funny that, as he points out, if it's such a "serious issue" why was it barely-if ever- talked about until RIGHT before CES?
Also kinda funny that every time this bug happens...the text is of a sensitive nature....
I call BS on that.
As I have said before, Engadget is a lot like "sexy action news" with their "the world is ending" article titles.
This issue, while it does need to be fixed, is not as serious nor is it as excessively occurring as claimed.
If so, then it would have been reported more often in the last six months than ONCE.

It's simple: A lot of people don't get to use the AOSP message app - how many stock Android phones are there? But if you go on AOSP ROM threads you'll get see SMS complaints pop up occasional. I guess it's a story because it still hasn't been fixed after all this time plus a HUGE stock phone just dropped - the Nexus S. Reviewers have taken notice.

?
The "claim" by Engadget is that it is an issue in coding of Android and "will occur no matter what SMS program is used" [which is complete and utter bull****]
It DOES need to be fixed but the timing and "end all" nature of Engadget article screams attention whoring.

not sure if this is the same bug but me and my brother who both have had evo's since the launch had a problem with clicking on a conversation, starting to write a text and notice that we were actually sending it to a complete wrong person. It was few months ago, i actually sent few msgs to wrong people before i caught on.

That seems to implicate that it is not SMS app specific.
But as I said, others have read this and made the claim.
This has happened to me numerous times on stock, custom sense, and MIUI ROMs. I'll send a text to someone, and both they and a random person that was already in my texting list (someone that I have texted before) will get the text. It has happened on all 3 of my EVOs. Also, sometimes when I click on a thread it takes me to a completely different thread. I have almost sent a text to the wrong person because of this many times.
I think I understand this. It has something to do with the way Android handles the "back" hard/softkey function. It's missremembering which tile is where in the stack. It seems to happen when the "stack" or remembered tiles is too large. Try spamming the back button sometime. Occasionally it will do some interesting things.
Fix may be as simple as a small routine that scrubs whatever cache is responsible for this behavior.

This happened to me, I thought it was me not paying attention, or that might have really been the case. I almost got caught up it something because if it Now I tend to delete all the other sms's in my inbox while having a sensitive conversation.
Guys, I don't question that this happens.
I know it does because it's happened to me.
Once or twice...
I DO question how it suddenly "happens all the time" and only when its a "sensitive message". I call complete BS on both issues.

No, say you open up your message app and click on the thread you have going with John, it will instead open the thread you have with Jane. So if youre not paying attention youll text the wrong person.

The reason it was doing it was... Sms email text alerts from my bank of america.. The @.... Email text
Only fix was factory reset...until the next message came in... I fixed it by turning the bank alerts off...

Not gonna lie, pretty hilarious things have happened to me because of this bug. I either send lots of awful text messages, or my phone is trying to mess with me.
One time I accidentally sent an old school friend a text meant for my girlfriend that was pretty mushy. Woke up to a text back going.. "..um wut".
The second time was more terrible; some less-than-politically correct stereotypes questions meant for a close friend that ended up sent to a (thankfully trustworthy but still awkward) co-worker. :B
I only noticed after sending the text (and sending it IN THE THREAD for the person it was meant for) and then being redirected back to my list of conversation threads only to find that the completely incorrect contact was now at the top of my list and was in fact the newly chosen recipient for my text message.

LOL @sexting.....
Is someone from Microsoft going to have to develop a SMS recall function? We all know how well it works in outlook.
Recently, I added my buddy to my family account and had his evo set up just like he said he saw mine as. During the course of about an hour or two of rooting, flashing, and downloading; I started getting the same text message he sent me from the parking lot to ask what I needed from Wendy's, and so far I've received it 38 times TODAY.
I thought this was his doing because of some odd setting I must have set, or a wrong sequence of flashing... perhaps forgetting to wipe a cache at a particular time?
The problem is, I also got a text from my girlfriend, and although not as bad, I've been getting the same one about a dozen times. She's on USCC.
Has anyone else been experiencing this? I've become paranoid to the point to where I've flashed cm7, and wiped all data without a restore, but I still get the same problem. Anything I could do?
Thank you in advance for your time, all feedback is appreciated.

Had the same issue. The problem starts with the airave. Unplug it, then call sprint, tier two support. They flush something and it goes away.
I've have mine unplugged now, since it was the root of the problem. I would rather roam then go thru sms hell again.

same problem and have the airave.

its not the air rave, i have it but i received my duplicated txt's when i wasn't near it. try 30 something miles away from it.
i called in and im waiting on an engineer to call me back in an hour
AHA! Same thing happened to me last night. My dad kept sending me "Yanks and Sox are playing on channel 1127." I called him up bragging that there was something wrong with his recently purchased iPhone 4. Turns out it was me.
I had the same thing happen when i was with verizon unfortunately, seems sprint isn't the only one.
I was at my sons field day and had my streak in my pocket all day and from bending over and squatting and everything else that was happening the outer frame bowed up and out away from the frame and the volume buttons slid down and now it wont snap back together, now it thinks there is headphones plugged in when there is not. They keep trying to tell me its "customer induced" damage when in the pics that they had me send them clearly shows that there is no other damage to it but that. Its been escalated to the highest level supposedly but I don't believe that. I want to talk to a person that speaks English fluently and understands that crazy things happen every day with products. Its not like they aren't going to fix and send it right back out as a refurbished device. So does anyone have a number or a way to contact someone other then the non English speaking tech people.
