NEXUS S Designed for 2.4.... - Nexus S General

I'm not at my PC, but there is too much proof for it. 2.4 will have honeycomb features! Google Talk video chat. New UI buttons, YouTube and more. 2.4 will still be called gingerbread and I think it will OTA update the same day Honeycomb tablets arrive.
I think 2.3 was released just to stay on schedule. I also firmly believe the Nexus line is Google's way of setting standards for OEMs.
Your thoughts?

What, none?
There is pretty much nothing known about 2.4 except for a few shots of it on a Sony phone with a Sony UI.

Um...honeycomb was already announced to be 3.0.
2.4 is a minor revision.

All of it wasn't Sony's UI. If you watch the video, you can catch a glipse of Honeycomb style buttons. Plus new animations.
I don't think Google would release a device with hardware that wont have native apps. Think about it, at the moment there is no native FFC app. The FFC. And Gtalk video chat has to be the biggest proof.
Not to mention they showed Honeycomb the exact same day the SDK was released for 2.3.

That's why 2.4 is still called gingerbread. It will update Google Apps and some more visual changes. Nothing big, but noticeable.
People will see what I mean in due time. ;-)

I agree, in my opinion it will play out much like the 2.1 update did a year ago. Initial release, then a month later the new revision (all under the same name).

A quick Google http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...possibly-an-incremental-gingerbread-upgrade/#

err... isn't this the Xperia Arc we're talking about?
check http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2yhd_aoo4A at 0:45.... that one shows the version still as 2.3 ...
could the animations just be SE tweaks?
Boohooo then

That one also has the 2.3 notification bar, rather than the odd HTC-a-like one from other pictures.

If their is a 2.4, it will most likely contain some stuff that 2.3 was missing that they had promised us initially like video chat via gtalk, which i know Andy said was a honeycomb feature but it was supposed to be in Gbread,

hopefully it includes the new pc to device market that they promised in IO2010. I have been bummed since they changed the market and appbrain can't push installs.
something i haven't heard them talk about ever is controlling what get's restored to your phone. I change phones often and like some apps restored but not others. it would be nice if there was an option to change settings via web browser. pipe dreams, they keep my smiling.

aosp 2.3 has the 2.6.35.7 kernel. Those builds are merged manually with the .32 kernel. But the xperia arc running .32 on 2.4 is very very strange.

they're oem's. They have early access to future builds from google to be able to build it for new hardware and optimize for it. However, these builds aren't released. Nexus S will be the first phone to get the latest in an official release

i really think google needs to work on perfecting froyo before they even think about rolling out GB, so far i don't think many people are really liking froyo to much, just doesn't seemed all it was hyped up to be to many.

NO WAI did you see the flash light?
I think they should let FroYo die and focus on making GB a better release, especially if they're numbering it as a major version. Honeycomb is nothing more than a name at this point. If they already knew what they wanted to develop for it, they'd just put it in GB.

That is correct, plus gingerbread
Personally I enjoy froyo a lot better then eclair and yes maybe it is not perfected however gingerbread is going to be a brand new version of android where as froyo is still a 2.x version of android making the possibilities in advancement greater then on froyo... Why waste time perfecting something when you have something better to perfect?

Think of Froyo like Windows Vista. It had improvements over XP but with a lot of problems too that left most rather unimpressed. So Microsoft decided cut short development of Vista in favor of developing Windows 7 which by-in-large has been well received such that we would like to forget that Vista ever happened. In the same way, I think we will forget about Froyo once Gingerbread releases, provided that it actually is a great remake of Android.
In other words, why waste time perfecting a buggy OS? Just start over. Rethink the OS from scratch with a few lessons learned from previous successes and failures.
Eh...just my $0.02.

Supposedly Gingerbread will completely overhaul the default Android user interface, to the point where HTC was being asked if they would even include Sense on 3.0 (they said they still would, unfortunately...) That's what I'm most excited about Android is pretty B.A. but it's ugly as heck.
Once again why waste time perfecting something when there is something new to perfect

The video is real, many sites have it reported that many manufacturers had Android 2.4 running on several devices there.
Also look at the baseband version they are running there. It is newer than ours ...
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Anyone notice the i9023 baseband?
edit: /\ that guy did.
OK that video is in German. The woman in the video says that the nexus is ready to be sold and that it is not shure yet which carrier will get it. Price will be somewhere between 500 and 550€, like the sgs. It is also not clear if it will get a samoled or a slcd, she said.
I think the vid is legit, she seems to be from Samsung or something like that...
Could it be that its just a specific version of 2.3 made for German NS? Similar to the Motorolla Droid's having custom versions of 2.1/2.2? I've read a lot of rumors on 2.4 but nothing seriously confirmed. I can't imagine the UI would be that different from 2.3-2.4, but then again I didn't think that there would be such drastic difference from 2.2-2.3.
I've read alot on every android website possible concerning these rumors, and nobody really has anything solid other than alternate baseband numbers and pictures of the Xperia and NS running 2.4
In Sweden it will be called I9023. (Stated by Samsung)
How will it differ, SW/HW wise apart from the SLCD screen, will be intresting. (Prob only SW)

Hasn't even been announced yet, so I doubt anyone even has a clue But I imagine it may launch/be released about the same time as Honeycomb is fully announced, so maybe end of January/early Feb.
I read somewhere that 2.4 is mostly going to be gingerbread with just updates. More or less how Moto Droid started with 2.0 then moved to 2.1, still eclair but it included updates and what not.

Not sure how this has been missed GT-I9023 on video

I have posted this as a reply to a few threads now but no-one seems to have picked it up. So I will make it plain. The vid below shows a Samsung being reviewed in Germany. The model number is GT-I9023 which is significant in itself but the more interesting thing is the Android build number. This is the second time it has been caught on film the first being on the new Sony at CES.
Enjoy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrAjgYDx7yU&feature=player_embedded
Its just the nexus S running android 2.4, I posted it on the nexus S forums a while ago.
I am quite sure its a trickery.
My darkyy's 8.0 shows the version as 2.3.1
The video shows the baseband as xxjl2
Doubt it, as it was reported by others as being at CES.
Here is the picture of the Experia Arc running it as well.

could be fake... I last recalled some .prop file being editable to allow basically anything to be shown in those fields...
Oh and btw, I don't believe there will be an Android 2.4, but much an Android 3.1, as Honeycomb is 3.0.
So I assume (but it's only my opinion) that any 2.4 things are fakes.
Or Google ****ed up with the alphabet >_<
Is it possible they will optimise the 3.x line for dual cores and keep the 2.x line optimised for single?

So far they havent released minimum specs, some sites speculate since its based on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core CPU that it will be the minimum. But a phone can dream.
The question is, if 3.0 is tablet based then what is the next update for smartphones? Surely not Ice Cream Sandwich? Tablet OS should work on smart phones otherwise they should use a different numbering system. Kinda getting ahead of myself since the x10 wont get as much as 2.2 officially.

From what I understand regarding 3.0, if the resolution of the screen is above a certain amount (ie a Tablet) then it will have the new UI and but if the resolution is smaller (ie a phone) then the UI will remain the same.
In this article on the german smartphone site areamobile.de, they say, that Honeycomb will stay a tablet-only OS in the near future.
But later this can change since they want to reunite the Android versions in the long term.
You could try Google translate if you're interested in the article

Considering the fact that I haven't used 2.1 since mid December and now currently running a stable 2.3 I'd say that no more updates is a little exaggerated. Consider we're talking about motorola. That UI is for OMAP devices and Atrix isn't equipped with OMAP. We'll see all together.
I doubt the UI will be different just because the processor is. With it so deblurred, you gotta wonder why they even bother redoing any part of it. They can just include the bloat they want as apps without messing with the framework. Maybe the carriers are insisting on crippling some features.
Code is written in high level programming language like C++.

Its the same case as why the Photon and Atrix got a different, uglier and sluggish Blur instead of the one that came with all the Motorola phones equipped with OMAP4 chips.
Heck, the ICS Blur we see on our Atrix might even be the original ugly Android4 blur that is available for download everywhere.
Sent from that Atrix.

Agreed.
Heck the launcher on the initial Froyo builds was so much more faster!
And then the rest of the Motorola phones comes out, and guess what ? Atrix is suddenly sluggish? I mean seriously?
I actually complained about screen switching being TOO fast on the Froyo build lol... ooops.
GB update was weird for me, it worked GREAT for a long time, then it started getting buggy and sluggish, I factory reset it like 4 times with new blur accounts etc, and nothing helped, finally rom'd it the other day and couldn't be happier..
Got to figure out a solution for webtop though, I used that a LOT.

If reports are correct (that Webtop has been replaced with tablet mode plus some candy), then the only solution that is rational is to run a headless Linux disttro and RDC into it.
Even if all the bits of code needed to spin up X are opensource, it is going to be a huge pain for somebody to port it over to ICS. And some items (such as the kernel mod that mux's inputs to both X and 'droid) I do not beleive are avaiable.
Using an RDC aproach makes it is fairly easy to put a distro of your choice on the Atrix though, so that is a plus.
To me the question would be if I was to use a full screen RDC to an 'ux desktop, or just bring up a window to the app that I want. Really need to see how it all plays after we get the real Tegra drivers for ICS out.
