Does anyone know if there are apps or modules for the following problem; I want the phone to stop searching for 3G or 2G networks when the screen is locked? Because when I don't use the phone, I don't really need a 3G network.. and therefore will probably save some battery? So when the screen is locked it should use only 2G network, and when it's put on again it has to start searching for 3G or 2G networks.. any ideas?
That's interesting, its a good idea for an app if anyone can do it

I found an app called timeout3g.. but that kills all data when the screen is locked! So apps like whatsapp doesnt work anymore.. But seeing all these reactions it is not that interesting?:S

Is there a way I can toggle between Edge and 3g on the g2 without going into settings? I cant figure it out using tasker and i'm not sure how to use APN droid to do it.
Basically, I want to switch to 2g when I'm at work just to save battery - i dont want mobile data off, i just want it to use the 2g radio instead of 3g.
Ideas? Is this even possible on stock froyo? I know CM can do it.

I used better cut to create a shortcut on the desktop. It works for now, like you I'm waiting for CM to fix most of the stuff that bugs me...
I've been using the "Data On Demand" application on my g2 which turns off your data when your screen is sleeping and then back on when you turn on your screen. It's saved me a lot of battery so far, but as you said you want data to remain on, there should be other applications out there but this is an option.
i wonder since they can turn off data when the screen is off and on when the screen is on if they can do 3g when the screen is on and edge when the screen is off.

Quick, tip, toggling from 3g/edge could burn out the sim card and cause connection problems to the network, or at least that's what the tmob tech said to me. I had trouble with my g2 switch from hspa to edge to cutting off completly, so I called the tmob tech. It turned out I had an older sim card (from the g1, had 3g/2g toggle) and said that that was causing the problem and that eventually it would burn out from switching networks so many times. Don't know if this is true or not but just giving yall a piece of warning. Anyways, I registered a new sim card that came with my g2 and now i get constant hspa and everything is hunky dory
Burning out the sim from switching between 3g and edge makes absolutely no sense to me. At worst, switching from between 3g and edge should be no worse than going in and out of service which, as T-Mobile a customer, happens all the time if you ever go inside. It also seems odd that a supported and encouraged battery saving feature could reduce the practical lifespan of the product. I say chalk this one up to the usual T-Mobile tech BS.

I'm using Rafdroid HD von my HD2 now for 2 weeks and I'm verry happy with it, i just have one problem (dont know if it depends on de android build or on the hd2 or whatever...)
I'm using gsm all the time because it has less battery drain in stand by, but when i want to use data for surfing etc. i switch to wcdma. on my x8 wich i had before this was no problem, it switched within seconds between the networks. Also the HD2, BUT it doenst start a data connection. i just can talk but no data.
in "wireless and network" the option for wireless data is checked, but the whole option is not clickable and it says "starting" (dont know if it says starting, i use the german version, there it say "einschalten..."
when i restart the hd2 then the data connection is working. so all times when i want to switch the data connection i need to restart my hd2.
is there a way to solve this problem?

I'm using the whole day only gsm/edge, but when i need more data (searching something on google etc.) i would like to switch to 3g. after this, back to wcdma. on my x8 this worked well, on the hd2 it looks like it cant start the data connection when switching between the two types of network...

when running runnymede rom from dung my phone switches to WCDMA (in *#*#4636#*#*; because of this I have no data connection 3G or HSDPA. When switching back to GSM only data conncetion (3G or HSDPA) is working but after a while phone switches back to WCDMA preffered.. How to change this into GSM only as default???
In my work developing an App for localized radar information, I find that when I need information from the internet, my phone doesnt use the wifi, but relys on data usage. My house's wifi is unsecured, and my phone is always connected when in range, but where I do my developing in the house there is scant 3g coverage and mostly Edge coverage. (Kinda inbetween towers where I live)
For example, my Weatherbug App will not load (and sometimes lock up) unless the signal indicator says H or 3G or 4G, while being connected to wifi.
I am new to mobile OS so is there something I am doing wrong or something I have not set on the phone?
I have a very weak signal in my apartment. My phone constantly bounces between no signal and 1 or 2 bars. I find that my DVP works much better when I manually turn off the data connection in the Cellular settings when I want to use wifi as my primary connection.
Your DVP says H or 4G? If so, you have soemhing the rest of us do not..

Yeah my carrier put a 4g sim into my DVP and upgraded the radio...Works too, I didnt believe it when I first heard it.

I have that same radio in my at&t dvp. Bottom line is that the phone does not ship with a 4g capable radio. No SIM card changes that fact. Don't let the goons at the phone store fool you.

I agree. DVP is not 4G capable.
hey they offered a free upgrade and I took it...but I havent been able to connect to a 4g network so maybe they WERE fooling me....either way the Wifi issue has been solved so no more discussion on this if you would please.

I have problem with 3G on this phone - I almost never have internet signal. Would external antenna help? Or maybe sth is wrong with my phone / settings? I sometimes see the signal for Edge network and can use internet, but most of the time - nothing. My network should have coverage in my area (judging by their map). WiFi works without problems.

try reflashing!!
or maybe put on airplane mode and reboot and then put
airplane mode off..
or just get a warranty!!!
Thanks, I will try it. Warranty is out of question - it's old, used phone I bought only for testing apps (but I'm using it for other things now because it's quite good ).
It will also help if you set the access points manually for internet and mms
And if you can manually select the network
