I just got a Dell Streak with the latest stock version (Android 2.2), and cannot connect to my Wifi at home. On my router I've configured WPA2 encryption + Hidden SSID.
I don't have any problem connecting my (Windows) laptops, my smartphones; HTC Diamond (WM6.1), HTC Touch HD (WM6.5), Nokia N97 and Blackberry.
Just both my Android phones, (HTC Wildfire and Dell Streak with both Android 2.2), keep failing with the message, 'Not in range, remembered'. If I set my SSID to broadcast, it works.
Since I do want to use the option to hide my SSID, and this seems to be a (only) Android 2.2 issue, I hope that one of you has a solution for this issue.
Does anyone had this issue and found a solution for this?
The WiFi standard calls for the SSID to be broadcast even though there are many devices computers, etc. that work with it off. Here are some discussions on the point:
Automatically Connecting to Hidden SSID WiFi Network
Your SSID Isn’t Hidden Forever
Wi-fi Mythbuster: Do NOT hide your SSID
Non-Broadcast Wireless SSIDs Why hidden wireless networks are a bad idea
Myth vs. reality: Wireless SSIDs
A quote from the last link:
It’s a violation of the 802.11 specification to keep your SSID hidden; the 802.11i specification amendment (which defines WPA2, discussed later) even states that a computer can refuse to communicate with an access point that doesn’t broadcast its SSID. And, even if you think your SSID is hidden, it really isn’t.

You don't really gain much security benefit from hiding your SSID. It might prevent the script kiddies from finding your network, but it won't stop anybody who knows what they are doing.
WPA2 is pretty well unbreakable, so that should be more than sufficient to protect your network in any real-world Personal or Commercial scenario. If you are running a Military or National Security network, then you may want to implement further security controls - and you obviously wouldn't be asking about it on this forum
I did not have this issue before with any device, so I'm just curious why this was only happening with my Android phones. For me it's absolutely no problemen to unhide the SSID.
But thanks Marvin02 and Philip for your very usefull feedback. I did not know most information you posted. I will enable the SSID broadcasting.
Thanks!

Hi, thanks in advance for help.
I have someone leeching off my Wifi net, who seems to be able to 'break-in' no matter how i secure the WiFi net.
Anyone know of any free Windows Mobile software that will show signal strength of Wifi CLIENTS nearby. Not Access Points, but CLIENTs.
I want to go find this guy.
thanks
Hi there!
If you got an "leecher" on your network I would recommend you to start your search on your router.
You didn't provide any specs, how did you find out that someone is on your network?
Next question, have you changed both, router pass and wlan key?
Are u using weak encryption (wep)?
Whats about your mac-filter?active?
I would guess you've got an dhcp server on your network/router... go there and check the dhcp releases. Any suspicious entrys? You should know all the devices listed there. If you have found a IP you don't know, ping it and check if its alive (those packages can be ignored by the host), try to access it via smb, you could also try a demo of languard and try to read out details like os, user, owner...
I'm almost shure you can't use your wm device to locate a client of a network, unless you can switch your wlancard to ap-mode and he connects to you ^^
Nope, need signal strenght reader if poss.
Thanks for the comment, but I'm pretty security savvy, and have done most of what you recommend.
I actually can't believe he's still getting in when I've locked down so tight.
Anyway, it's a CLIENT signal strengh program that I'm trying to find.
Rogue clients are malicious wireless client devices that either try to gain illegitimate access to your WLAN or try to disrupt normal wireless service by launching attacks. There are numerous ready-to-launch wireless attack tools freely available on the net. Many of them are open sourced and work pretty well with most Wireless client cards. This turns any curious mind to professional hacker in minutes. Many do it simply for the pleasure of being able to disturb someone remotely. All these developments force WLAN administrators to give a second look at any wireless client that is misbehaving.
What means most of that what i recommended?
Did you actually change the router password AND the wlan key?
Sorry, I don't think that you can trace him with your mobile. as long as hes not connected to your mobilephones wireless network (wich requires your mobile wlan device to switch to ap-mode).
Forget about that.
Please tell us, why do you think somebody is on your network, how did you find out... whats the "evidence" for you that there is somebody.
I'd like to help u, but i need some further details to lock him out.
I hope you know that its just a matter of minutes to break a wep key. GPUs are used to decode it, which is damn fast!
So please provide more specs about your network.
Greetings
1: Use WPA instead of WEP.
WEP is crackable in a matter of seconds.
2: Assign access control/MAC filtering
3: Use your network in ad-hoc mode
Well, WPA is crackable too.
The person in question might change his MAC to yours and create collisions anyways
Can you be sure that he has really associated with your router. I have noticed some client/router combinations "apparently" associate but all traffic is blocked because they did not provide the right key.
As others say - use WPA WPA2 and use a strong (non dictionary) passphrase
get a computer that can run airodump or something similar.
run airodump with it set to the channel of you router - not in hopping mode as you will miss lots of packets.
Airodump will tell you the strength of the signal from his computer so if you have this on a laptop you can move around and possibly can an idea roughly where he is
Thank you, i will try Airodump
Thanks in particular Scote.
I didn't list the router config simply becuase I am confident it's pretty secure:
Router is a new Belkin N1
- 63 random char password from grc.com/passwords
- SSID is "netgear" even though its a Belkin : intention to mislead for access URL.
- WPA2-PSK AES encryption
- SSID not broadcasting
I didn't bother with MAC filtering, as I understand a good 'hacker' can spoof it : If this guy can get through WPA2 I would say he can probably MAC spoof.
My 'evidence', is that up to 3 unkown computers turn up on the 'Clients List', around 4 hours after I change the SSID/password : Each time.
I have 2 laptops, so I will try Airodump or maybe Backtrack (suggested elswhere) on these as a 'direction finder' based on signal strength.
Hmmm...I did read somewhere you can set a Kaiser to be an access point...
Thanks all
Yes you can.
Someone found his stolen Wii/mobile phone (don't remember which one) that way.
There was even an article on the net.
I have a ZyXEL P-2602HW-D1A Wireless router. I have tried all combinations of security, even NO SECURITY WHATSOEVER, and still the device won't transfer data.
Not working;
Firmware: 1.5, Build: CR817
Wifi Router: ZyXEL P-2602HW-D1A
Security: Tried All; WPA2, WPA, WEP & None.
Problem: Connect under all conditions but no data is sent
Please help.
Have you tried another WiFi access point to check the devices WiFi module actually functions?
No, I haven't tried that yet, but don't really see the point... I've connected effortlessly to the same WiFi network with my HTC Touch Diamond.

For some reason my N800 wouldn't connect to MY ZyXEL P-2602HW-D1A unless I set the device (N800) to disable any kind of wifi powersaving features it had.
On another note, how did you get your hands on the device so early? I'm guessing you are using a Cybercity internet connection? (I'm in copenhagen myself)
edit: I actually came to that solution when i noticed I could connect to OTHER accespoints, but not the Zyxel ones.
Same problem here in France with a Freebox as router
I've noticed under the router's WLAN client list that the device does not have a "Host Name". Would that present a problem?
It is assigned an IP address by the router without any problems, though.
Also the device seems to lose connection and reconnect constantly (every 5-10 seconds).
I done some digging around in the router settings and found an "AnyIP" feature. Would that possibly help?
There are a number of issues floating around. Support for WPA2 seems iffy and some people can just change to WPA or WEP and all work fine.
There are however a number of people (such as me) who can get a connection perfectly, it shows connection OK, they get an IP from the DHCP server etc, they can even browse a page for a few seconds... but after that no data is sent and everything times out. This is happening on any security from none through to WPA2.
I have seen no solution to this anywhere and believe me I have looked. Some people have given up and got a new router, but this is not a solution.
Can someone confirm that this has been recognised as a fault with the magic and is being investigated, rather then assuming it's a user or router error. There are far too many instances of this across many brands of router for it not to be an issue with the HTC Magic.

What I mean is have you tested the device on ANY other AP except the ZyXEL?
No, but since I'm by far the only one having this issue (try searching the web; see my last post), I didn't feel it was necessary. Just want some input from xda-dev that might solve the problem, if any.

I've had exactly the same problem earlier with the N800 on the zyxel. Exactly how you describe it.
Did you find out if you could turn off any powersaving features on the HTC?
same problem here
in france with a freebox
I don't exaclty know what router is in the box
but I have excalty the same
I set on never the wifi sleep(powersaving) mode.
i found it in setting wifi menu button then advanced and "never"
but the problem is still here

Could be DHCP lease time problem. Did anyone of you tried to set up Magic with Static IP?
Yes, I tried that also - didn't help one bit.

I also have this problem. Im in Denmark with a Zyxel P660HW-p1.
Another user of Cybercity in Denmark with the same problem.
ZyXEL P-660HW-D1
The android is the only device that doesn't work. I have tried with Iphone and laptops.
I've tried to change the settings on the router to no avail.
Enable 802.11g+ mode [on/off]
RTS/CTS Threshold [2432/4096]
RTS/CTS Threshold [2432/4096]
Max. Frame Burst [600/1800]
The device shows up in the device list with no hostname, the HTC Magic gets the right ip address (using the program WhatIsMyIp to view it)
I had the same problem before, when I set my TP-LINK draft N router with WEP security my HD can see it, connect to it (but speed was slow tho), and my HTC Magic just keep saying its not in range. However, when I set it to open security it works, so I recognise its probably the security setting... so I changed that to WPA2 and then it works.
In my case, I see different device have different tolerance to some settings (in my case, draft N + WEP is OK with laptop, HTC HD, but not Magic), so its still worthwhile to try a few different settings, and try a public wireless access point also to double confirm?
Power save?
I have Zyxel (P-2602R-D1A) router.
I had exactly the same problem with my HTC Vox (winmo)... but that was solved by boosting the WiFi in the phone.
WiFi -> Best performance
So Im guessing magic is in some WiFi "power save" mode...
I dont know how this works, but I thought maybe you could change some WiFi settings behind the hood - that is if the hardware is capable of it.
Zyxel (P-2602R-D1A) router
I am having the same issue with this router as the other posters. The phone connects perfectly and reports an excellent signal, but barely sends or receives any data. I have used a terminal emulator to ping the router and it reports an 82% packet loss. This must be a big problem for many Danish users as it is the standard wifi router provided by two of the major ISP's.
same issue here with my vodafone uk magic.
wifi connects and i can browse for a few seconds then get a connection error and can't browse until i re-start wifi on the magic...
i've actually given up using wifi at home now due to this.
router is a talktalk supplied Huawei Echolife HG520b using 128 bit WEP
i can connect fine via wifi at the office so i don't think it's an issue with the handset, just with certain routers or router configs...
this issue has been reported on the vodafone uk forums but as yet no solution.

Hi everyone,
I just got a router today and set it up with a hidden SSID.
I have no problem connecting to broadcasted SSID, but it won't let me connect to this hidden SSID router.
Steps taken:
1. Remembered the SSID
2. Entered the WPA password
What happens next is the Aria just keeps scanning for available wifi. It doesn't connect automatically to the hidden SSID (home). Neither did it allow me to manually connect by clicking on 'home'. Instead, it gave me an option to Forget the network if I click on it.
I noticed there are several threads that belongs in other forums in XDA but none of them answers this question.
Any advice/suggestions? Greatly appreciate it!
Thanks everyone!
Update:
By the way I read a thread that we have to add the device MAC address to the routers' filter. Did that but still won't connect automatically. Neither does it allow me to connect manually.
Clicking on 'home' just gave me the same options:
1. Forget network
2. Change password
If only it would give me a third option:
3. Connect
That would be great!

You did not mention which Aria ROM you are using.
Did you type it exactly the same? Its case sensitive.
I've turned off MAC filtering because some routers have a max that can be in the list, preventing the later ones from connecting. I've had no problems connecting to both my Westell (home) and Netgear (work) routers with hidden SSID's after turning off MAC filtering using stock ROMs (2 & 12)

I've used mac filtering before with a hidden ssid and never had any problems connecting. I'm guessing maybe he typed the ssid wrong. The devices don't care if it's hidden or not. What matters is it it's typed correctly and that it's in range to see it.
Thanks for the enthusiastic response everyone!
Sorry I forgot to mention my ROM. I'm using Liberated R12 here.
I've undertaken all these steps:
1. Case sensitive SSID is correct (all lowercase which is correct)
2. password is 100% correct
3. wifi is in range (sat right next to it) - I'm using D-link router
These happened:
1. Range not found
2. Can't connect manually
So anyway, I've decided to broadcast SSID and password protect it instead. Also removed MAC filtering. No problem now.
However just for future reference, let's get to the bottom of this!
By the way, I noticed that the Aria is receiving weaker signals than the iPod and Blackberry that is also within the same range distance. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks again guys!
Greetings all,
I just purchased the aria and am having a
variation on this problem. I have successfully
gotten my aria to connect to my hidden SSID
network. However, if I leave the range of the
and then return, it will not connect automatically.
If I try to add a network of the correct name, it
will suddenly find my network. I have version
2.1-update1 on my phone and I suspect this to
on the phone end since my wife's phone does not
have this problem and they were purchased at the
same time. Thank you for your time.
Keith
Very well could be your phone. On stock rom and even cm6 I had no problem connecting to a hidden network. It was with the cm7 nightlies that I had to turn SSID broadcasts back on.

I can't seem to get my Tab to recognize the WEP WiFi internet sharing network that is on my Tilt2 (Rhodium) WMPPC. My netbook, my two full-sized notebooks, and my desktop all can simultaneously connect to the WM phone (in fact I am right now on this netbook to post this), but for whatever reason the Galaxy Tab can't even find the WEP network my WM phone is generating much less connect to it.
The entire reason I bought the Tab was to connect to my WM phone like the phone was a mobile wireless router. ???
Anyone had this issue? I'm sure a number of you came from a WM phone and used wifi router feature. And the Tab looks like it supports WEP networks and encryption.
Update: installing a warlogger style applet on the Tab called "Wifi Tracker" finds the WM-generated WEP nework. So is it Samsuing's native wifi setup that blows?
It finds my WM network as [WEP][IBSS].

I know this doesn't help you one iota, but for what it's worth, my Tab can pick up HTC Desire as a mobile Hotspot without issue. I normally use WPA2, but I just tried using WEP and I had no problems either.
So, I don't think there's anything intrinsically "wrong" with the Tab, though I have a Euro Tab running the very latest JMA firmware which may be significant.
If I had an WinMo phone to test with, I'd give it a go, but I don't, so I can't!
I presume that your WinMo phone is created a proper access point, and not an adhoc (point-to-point) network?
EDIT: Ok, just googled and found that IBSS means it is an ad-hoc network, and not an access point which means that "out of the box" Android devices can't attach to it.
This thread may help you.

Dave
I have done about everything. I can connect to my Android phone (using tether), my house, other open networks PERFECTLY, but unfortunately my gym uses a WEP network and I cannot get my tablet to connect to their network.
I have rebooted, forgot the network and set it up again (a million times) I have done EVERYTHING. My Android phone can connect to the gym network perfectly. Any suggestions?
Anyone have any suggestions? Does anyone connect to a WEP secured network and know that this works?
I had the same problem and found out the solution changing some values in the set up router.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I'm connected to our home browser which uses WEP. I think it's a matter of settings/wireless and networks/Wi-Fi settings/add wi-fi network. Once you are in the 'add' page, it asks about security, you should be able to input the data.

I have had same problems, honeycomb handles WPA and WPA2 enterprise networks weird compared to gingerbread. I have had problems with connections too. Try to use the "wifi advanced config editor" and make sure settings are correct for that network (after you attempt to connect to it in settings app). I hope google fixed this problem in ICS or i will be furious. Most of these kind of bugs are laziness on coders or just people who missed lines of code and then don't want to release an update (or wait till next update release rather than a hotfix).

So just to make sure I understand...
Basically the way I originally connected was that I let the tablet scan for networks, and it found the gym network. Once it found the gym network, I selected it and entered the password. I left the proxy and DHCP settings alone and pressed connect, and cannot get it to connect.
What you are suggesting that I do is delete the network, and add the network MANUALLY (where I input securtiy, SSID, passcode, etc.).. Is that right?
So I installed the Advanced Wifi tool, to no avail.
Here is the funny thing. I have a Samsung Epic 4G phone which uses Gingerbread, and it connects to the WEP just fine. I installed the Advanced Wifi on there as well, and went through the settings that were autoconfigured for the gym. Each setting matched my tablet perfectly, yet my tablet cannot pull an IP address, but my phone can.
I'm having the same issue. Thought it was the tab, just received replacement and still a No Go! Every other device in my house connects to this network. And the Gtab also connected perfectly until recently... no clue what to do now.
