Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

If you use the sprint branded hot spot, yes. If you use barnacle or wifi tether no.

U can either pay 30bucks for the official Sprint one or You can Use Mobile ap (link in my Signature & Instructions For installing themes if u want) on Stock 2.1 Rooted with a custom kernal and have infrastructure Wifi tethering for free. However if you want to use 2.2 then no you most likely have to pay for the service to one of the 2 developers working on mobile ap for froyo get it working.. im sticking n 2.1 til they get it working on froyo.

the viperom one is infrastructure but its a hacked version of another sgs mobile ap i think.

Tether with out root? Via usb or wifi?

Is it possible with out having the $30 bs addon to the plan. I am sure this has bee asked but all I can seem to find is tether with root.
Thanks

I use pdanet, but there are others too. Only reason I use it is that they have versions for all three oses I think. The other one that I'm thinking of but can't remember the name is still windows only. Yeah to buy the app is kinda expensive but for the price of one month of official service you can have an app that is one time pay
U don't remember what the app was called?

Errrr nm lol read that wrong
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Or you could go this route: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756804 MAKE SURE you delete /system/MobileAP.apk and /system/MobileAP.odex (if you have this) before flashing that. Also you'll need clockwork recovery. I switched to this method as (a) it's the stock look, and (b) I have devices that cannot connected to ADHOC networks
If you do not mind your EPIC showing up as a ADHOC access point (which not all devices can connect to) then check out WiFitether: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
As others said PDA.net works as well.

A company called "Tether" has an app out in open beta. Haven't tried it myself but at least for Blackberry Tether was better than PdaNet.

4G Dropping on Tether

I've been using wireless tether at my place because I can't stomach the 50 bucks a month for internet until I start my new job and it works fine for a bit on 4G but after a bit the 4G just goes out. It doesn't work on the phone or the computer and I have to switch back to 3G. I just recently switched from Nebula rom to Midnight rom doing a full wipe And not restoring any data in the hopes that that would fix it. It didn't so I then tried reflashing the modem in Odin but it didn't make a difference. Does anyone know what's up? Any help or suggestions are much appreciated!

Same issue. 4G power user here in Towson, MD, and the 4G would go in and out on some nights using the free tether. I stomached it, and bought the Sprint access point plan to test if it was me or Sprint and so far I have full 4G service (before it would go in and out) and have only lost Internet access once. I'm thinking Sprint flips a switch and bumps up the QoS. Download rates are roughly the same. 5mbps down, 1.1 mbps up although today (everyone is off my tower and at work while I work from home?) I get pretty good speeds.
Thanks for the info. 30 bucks would still be cheaper than Comcast.

Yep and ur wrong about deodexed roms... Mobile ap only works on 2.1 stock odexed rom rooted with custom kernal some have said it works on stock kernal too if ur rooted and when I went up to St. Louis the 4g worked amazing over it so fast thought I was on wifi.. mobile ap is currently a WIP for deodexed roms and froyo...

I tried it once on my stock rooted epic and it bootlooped and they told meit was for deodexed lol but that was way back when the app was first ported. I guess they worked it out. In anycase, id go with that OP. Now if only they can get it for froyo...

Verizon and AT&T block wifi tethering from market.

I thought we'd all get a nice lol out of this ;-)

yeah.. pretty sure that anyone that knows how to root to get tether to work knows where to find the apk.
But according to the article the carriers can differ the use of their own tethering services and the use of tethering that Google wanted to be allowed in Android, basically even if it isn't on the market it's less people using the tethering and makes it easier to pinpoint and cut people off.
A) Sprint will likely follow suit
B) I didn't even know it was available in the market lol.

Sprint's the only company that hasn't followed in the major two's footsteps so far.
First being encrypted locked boot-loaders. Not one phone has been so encrypted that it's impenetrable. Then second being this. I think Sprint's taking the route of T-Mobile and going to support AOSP to the fullest. Of course, it's wishful thinking but on the other hand, it does appear to be the case...for now.
I would lie to know the source of info in that article stating that they can tell when you are tethering. I don't believe that is true. Data should be data. There was another article out and this was not stated, just the block. That is achieved by the market lkooking for the carrier's signature and not showing certain apps, like Verizon's NFL app to Sprint or At&T.
Sorry for the newbie question, but does anyone know how to remove the carrier IQ? It seems that if that is not there then one cannot be detected tethering.
I am a new EPIC user and rooted my phone using the oneclick method and RFS filesystem. Basically rooted just for tethering my tablets to my phone for occassional net access. So how do I go removing sprint's IQ? TIA!

Yup. Put on a ROM that has it removed. Read OPs in development ROMs
I had to post here.
I noticed this, and when I went on the website to install it, it said I couldn't "Carrier blocks the install."
I go on my phone, fire up the market, and it lets me install it from there.
So apparently, T-Mo just wants me to download it from my phone, not from their website.
Whatever, I didn't even know that there was a website for the market till like a week ago. xD
Currently, putting a rom on is the only way to remove it.
There its also the factor of how much data is used - generally, a tethered device like a computer or game console would use more data than the phone by itself. If Sprint sees an unusual amount of data being downloaded, they might be able to consider that proof enough (just speculation, I'm not an expert but it is plausible)
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
i think sprint cares just a little less because their data plans are truly unlimited. my phone is my only source of internet. i use it to download movies and games and everything else. i use about 9-30Gb of data a month. and 've been doing it for over a year. no one has terminated my contract or throttled my data speeds or anything. they put up with it as long as i pay my bill.

you really should not say "latest" because if a new build comes out tomorrow then how is any one reading this on Sunday the 13th going to know what your talking about

That's the least of his concerns - I'd be more worried about "lunching" a "teathering" app... mostly because I have no freaking clue what that means
I read it out loud... sounds like his wifi is teething, and just ate his hotspot... hate when that happens...

Yummy!! Can't wait to see the how to video for this.
I'm running beta 6 asz it had more downloads so I assumed it was mor stable. With version 2 series it would set up an ad hoc network which worked great. For computers, but most tablest can not connect to ad hoc. Version 3 seems to hac the sprint hotspot, which I tested at my work and tablets now see it, but it opens the sprint hotspot config at the same time which makes concerend ill get nailed for an extra 20 bucks a month from sprint

using 3 beta 6 hit menu and go to settings try changing the top two settings:
Device-Profile= Samsung Epic 4g
Setup-Method= WEXT (ad-hoc)
using these settings the hotspot doesn't activate. At least as far as I can tell. I don't own a tablet so I dunno about how that would work for you.

That's something we really aren't supposed to discuss, because it's kind of a gray area legally
But Wireless Tether is a great, free alternative and you don't have to do any serious modifications to the phone with this option, just rooting

Googles wireless tether for root users works perfectly for me just make sure you're selecting the correct profile (Fascinate!) and start up mode (WEXT ad-hoc works best) in the settings!
Still running the eco7clean.
Using latest release of witether from Google.

Did some digging. I guess the version I was running (2. 0.7) didn't have profile options. Got the latest and greatest, and it is working good.

Correct, on the app being free. I assume you are grandfathered on unlimited data. If not, be careful.

Yeah... but ya know what? Thanks to the Dev's here, VZW and Samsung can both KMA. I don't need em. Even if they had released froyo, how many of us would still be running stock odexed with all bloatware intact? I sure as hell wouldn't.
