Post What Where:
General - general technical discussion items, news, anything else that does not fit into the other fora categories.
Q&A (Questions and Answers) - all questions, irrespective of type, get posted in here whether they be theme related, accessory related, technical, etc.
Accessories - any items to do with components and/or accessories relating to your device.
Rom Development - only meant for very advanced technical discussion directly related to ROM development activity and the delivery of actual ROMs and ROM components ONLY. Nothing else goes in here.
Themes & Apps - anything to do directly with the development of themes and/or applications. Nothing else goes in here.
MOD EDIT: BEFORE POSTING ANY THREAD IN THE DEVELOPMENT SECTION, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:
If you have developed a ROM, or are working with others to do so, the development forum is somewhere to discuss and share ideas, post useful feedback and logs or crash dumps, and to discuss a common goal developers are trying to achieve.
It is NOT the place to post your question because it gets higher traffic, or because more experienced users frequent it. Doing this just annoys those who are working on the device, and drives them away. Developers don't want to wade through 20 threads of "Help me urgently" to find their threads for porting and fixing camera issues etc. Similarly, if a thread is designated as discussion for developers say, porting a camera fix, please do not post in there asking "When will it be ready?", "Can I flash this yet?" etc. This is both completely disrespectful to those working on the project (you evidently haven't read the important posts in the thread), and also is making it harder for developers to find comments from other developers or testers when required.
Similarly, don't make loads of "Thanks for your work here" posts in an active development thread. It's just as annoying to developers as asking when something will be ready. If a ROM is complete, then go ahead and thank the developer if you wish, but don't go into threads for devs only, and interrupt it to post "thanks". It's basically spamming, and is treated as such.
If you are posting in development, you should have read every sticky and notice there, and should be actively developing or helping in the development of something. Developing isn't installing a ROM, or using a tweak, it's creating a ROM or other hack or tweak. If you haven't read for several days before starting out on XDA, you are likely about to ask something already solved. I registered on XDA when I first wanted to post, and that was to join in a discussion on something. Sure, join up and ask a question, but read the information available in General and Q&A first, as your question will have been asked before. Search is your friend here, become familiar with it.
Regarding when to post in development if you are not actually developing something, there is one occasion where it's acceptable. If you find a leak of a new ROM, which isn't already posted, and you verify it's legitimacy via either running it, or based on the source you obtained it from, then this is assisting in development, and should be posted in development. If you want to ask when a leak will be available use search first, then if not already in discussion, open a thread in general or Q&A.
If you have a problem flashing a ROM, this is NOT related to development. It's up to you to determine if it is specific to a particular ROM, and post useful information in that developer's existing thread for the ROM. If it happens on more than one ROM, and isn't a known issue (remember you should read several times more words than you post), then find out what you are doing wrong. Check guides written by others, try to repeat the problem and see if it happens every time. Something needs to be reproducible to be fixed effectively.
Once you have identified what you need help with go to the device Q&A forum (general if device lacks one), and make a clear, informative thread that explains the issue, and what you have tried doing to fix it. Did you re-download the ROM? Did you ask a friend to flash it for you, to reduce chance of user error? What steps (exactly) did you follow? What errors did you see (exact wording)? Did you double check all the steps? Did you do a wipe or hard reset?
If you make a clear, concise, yet detailed post, you will find help forthcoming, and should get the problem sorted very quickly. If someone suggests you try something, report back on what happened, did it work etc. Then, next time someone has this issue and searches, they will find this and have a verified and tested solution.
So remember... before you start a thread in development, ask yourself what you are developing. If you can't answer, then stop, step away from the post button, and think about where you are posting. Would it be better in General or Q&A, or is some more time with your best friend, search, required?

What if I wanted to make a thread talking about how the lack of multitouch caused the low in-call volume to drain the battery while *****ing about how the lack of Android 4.3 on the device created these problems?

Very good... Those are annoying post...
updated to include stuff about 2.1
This is a bit like banning commonly available substances, when half of society are already substance abusers.
but, now that i have made a sticky saying that i dont want new threads then there should be less opened
After having read the post today where now get a more acurate date on Eclair I see that to mention this on this forum is not aloved anymore and the auther was banned as this relates to 2.1
Does that mean when someone in here gets there first download of 2.1 and wants to let everyone know then this will be deleted ?
Also from my point of view I find it very easy to look at the headlines of any post to se if it is relevant or not for me if 2.1 is not relevant and to hear anything get me going into red . then I tend to simply not read it
I find mederation a great thing as without things seems to go ...... but to simply say 2.1 we dont want to hear about it or even the constant talk about the volume but realy i find it soooo easy to read arround this
Foul language or other unpleasentness should be banned right away

I strongly disagree with the closure of the thread "2.1 Eclair Date Confirmed". It was an useful thread, it added precious information, it is not the standard "when will 2.1 released???" forbidden in this thread.
I would hereby request to the moderator has closed it to reopen it.

and I take issue with your incredibly heavy handed moderating.
My post earlier was obviously a joke, which flew way over your head.
Now, everyone hates multiple threads on the same topic, but, the guy who actually posted proof and a real date should not of had his topic closed.
I'll write it here in simple English... I've said this before, btw:
No one wants to read a million rumor threads about the same topic, but, when someone has information with proof, they should never be silenced. Otherwise, you completely destroy the purpose of this message board, and it will lose members quickly.

the thread 2.1 Eclair Date Confirmed was closed becuase that piece of information was provided previously in the thread Android 2.1 week 38 which you would have realised if you had searched and read the forum before blindly accusing me of heavy handed moderating

no i apologise if you think im being heavy handed but when there's at atleast 3 topics a day of the exact same thing and they each get20 replies of nastiness i can either read 60 posts and delete the bad ones or i can stop a war early by closing the thread
Ahhh moderation is a ***** folks...
Hey gang.
Totally in agreement with you guys.
The moderators need moderators to ensure us of a "real moderation service" for this board.
It is not the first time I see good threads closed by our current jokers.
(I agree irrelevant post should be removed, but who and how is decided what is relevant?).
Plus to be quite honest, this is far from being the most organized blog on the subject.
On the plus note, if you dig far enough, you'll find anything on this site concerning your phone, you just sadly have to go over the entire section to find some infos, wich oftenly is embeded in a maze of post, wich is time consumming and somewhat pointless.(Keep in mind, I work 45 hours a week, I'm an lyricist and write a lot, then comes the gf, the kids and a rather extensive social life. So I have about 25 to 35 minutes a week to go over my gadgets and toys. XD )
It sadly seems the people over here somewhat forgot we are not all hardcore techno wiz with illimited time to play with our toys.
And to be quite honest, the attitude problem of a lot of them is somewhat starting to be a turn off.
I've exchanged words with one of them before and the smugness of that dude was, well, ginormous.
So I leave you on this, I have already made my mind:
1- this site is only good for root/roms/mods.
2- For real service concerning news on our phones, I will go elsewhere.
3- lastly, I believe the current moderator failed their mandate, wich should only be making sure the post are relevant or non-aggressive and mainly get their heads of their asses and realize that this is a service site and all questions are good(keep in mind most people around the globe can't understand **** about the software/hardware of their phones).
Peace to you all,
No hard felling XDA, I just call it how I see it.
Love you guys,
XIII

Well apart from all of them dealing with eclair they are all different subjects. Just looking at a topic, seeing the characters 2.1 and then locking or deleting it is either lazy moderation or indicating a total lack of reading comprehension. Well, to be fair, the fifth topic title is a tad ambiguous so I'll give you that.
i see your point
but they all have the issue of 2.1 at their core which means theyre all essentially the same issue
and under the same pressure from people asking me to close threads and new threads opened. i called it the way i see it
also there was mention of "if i want real service ill go to another site site and this site is only good for roms root and development well this site is called xda-DEVELOPERS we do mainly appeal to developers and its only recently its catered more to end users
IF you all think there should be one topic on the release of 2.1 then i will create and sticky a thread for the talk of 2.1 only
rather than trashing this forum section whenever you feel the need to come around, why don't you just name it the Nexus One General Info and Questions Forum Section. It's quite retarded that you keep coming in here in disturbing us users by moving every thread in the forum section. It's also quite unprofessional.
I think it's obvious by now folks want to be able to post questions in this forum section...regardless of mods and admins obsessive compulsive need to make us post question only in a certain place.
Agreed, just merge the two sections, I was thinking about posting the same thing.
One of my threads asking people to post pictures taken with the stock camera vs the desire camera got moved to Q and A, and it's still not moved back. How is that a question? It's silly.
Just make it a genera/q and a forum!
What are the odds of your question getting moved?
I agree, there's two whole pages of moved threads with about 3-4 posts mixed in with them. When I see that I think "oh well, I won't be reading that section today."
Definitely looks retarded now.
lol'd at all the moved topics. failmods are fail.
Well if people learned how to read they wouldn't have to mass move topics.

OP, I would +rep you if this forum supported it. Instead, I can only salute you.
You should probably make a post in the forums the mods/admins actually regularly READ making this suggestion, and reference this post.
Ahahaha
I remember when the Q&A section was created. I remember saying how bad of a idea that was and how it would never get followed, especially for newcomers.
It dose look pretty stupid, not to mention some of the stuff moved to Q&A clearly doesn't bleong in Q&A.
Aren't most things going to be questions? The only other kind of things would be statements or essentially news "I fixed this", "I got usb host working". Maybe they want a News forum and should call it "News".
I agree this level of moderation is not helpful, and I have complained about it in the past. That said there is a sticky on the Nexus One General forum for what is acceptable here. It is not really the Mods fault that so many people ignore it. I am more a "will of the people" kind of guy and would not move them, but the mods here feel differently.
Redudant sectiong not being dealt with on a developers forums is deliciously ironic.
Since this is the first page of the forum. Why not make it Q&A and the other one Comments/Opinions or what ever. Agree with one poster, you would expect to aks questions on the main forum page. Don't know why it was changed. Maybe a good reason? After the first forum page anywhere, you can then go to specific topics. That makes more sense to me.
Totally agree with OP.
It is absolutely retarded.
It would make sense though to have a separate forum where "answered" questions and guides get moved to - THAT would make sense.
What makes sense is for people to follow the rules in the first place. If you did, we would not have to move so many threads. The pointers you see are called expiring redirects, and they disappear 24 hours after the move. We have the option to move without redirect, but that tends to force people to just post their question again when they don't see the original thread was moved.
Here are a few more things I find interesting:
The people complaining about over-moderation are relatively new to XDA-Developers. I understand that XDA-Developers has seen an influx of members since adding Android (and non-HTC) devices within the last 12-24 months. However, that does not excuse members not following the already established rules. The rule(s) regarding posting in the proper place are not new, and whether you read them or not, you agreed to them when registering. In short, deal with it, or goodbye. You will not be missed.
When XDA-Developers created the original Q&A forum over a year ago, it was received warmly by 99.9% of members. In fact, the Q&A section was so popular, that members began to request Q&A sub-forums specific to each device, thereby keeping the General Q&A generic enough to apply to most/all devices. By default, a Q&A section is not created for a new device until the need arises.
In closing, please keep in mind the following. When people take the time to read before posting, they will either find their question has already been answered, or they will see that the Q&A sections are flame-free sections for posting questions.

It has been deleted. You have posted something that was already discussed and had a thread open. Duplicate threads are deleted by the mods so you do not spam our forum. Thanks.

Tough titties, and probably deleted.
Rikard Skogberg says:
Hi all,
.
First – As a clarification regarding the current Xperia products – We are planning another upgrade to bring new features (such as for example multi-touch for Xperia X10) to the current family of Xperia™ smartphones in Q1 2011. However, at this stage those plans do not include updating the underlying Android version.
.
This decision is based on that we believe that with the current hardware platform an overhaul of the underlying core OS wouldn’t drastically improve the user experience.
We believe that the current Xperia range on Android 2.1 coupled with our proprietary upgrades and unique hardware delivers a user experience that is on par with, and in many cases better than, a vanilla installation of Android 2.2.
.
Our priority right now is to keep enhancing the user experience of the existing products through coming updates and to deliver a fantastic range of smartphones in 2011 that are all on the latest possible version of Android – that is a target we are determined to hit!

In an effort to make the G2/DesireZ Forum easier to navigate, please leave all suggestions for improvement here. I will make every effort to reply as promptly as possible.
Thank you for your help in keeping the forums clean
well i would like to begin with 2 suggestions....
1. all posts with visionary as rooting method should be flagged as outdated and a recommendation put up to use rage and gfree as the recommended rooting methods. there is a sticky post on desire Q & A section with a video how to root with visionary which should be removed from sticky section.
2.The Wiki section should be more accessible and more upfront and be visible in all the sub forum sections. just like announcements are visible on every sub forum. as the wiki section has the most up to date information about rooting and currently recommended methods of rooting and returning back to stock.
Perhaps several sub-forums should be created within Android Development dedicated to supporting the more popular ROM releases (Cyanogen, Virtuous etc) as the General forum is filling up with issues and problems relating to non stock software.
This will both improve experience for both stock users, and those requiring help / support on non stock software.
Craig
maybe we could have separate sub sections for things specifically related to the desire z and the g2, such as radios, as its not yet clear whether we can flash desire z radios over g2 and vice versa.
cheers!

this times a bajillion.
I can't believe how many "help I've bricked my phone" threads are popping up due to visionary... needs to be addressed.

+1
and for the non-stock section, maybe a better way of segregating the threads based on what type of rom or kernal they represent, i.e. froyo/gb or sense/non-sense. the [TAGS] devs use are a step in the right direction, but don't really go far enough to keep the jumbled mess of "VISION_SENSE_WWEAUSTMOB_453.232.2.4 TURBO AWESOME EDITION" at bay.
p.s. <3 u guys/gals
yeah we need that
I am sorry but that would require a complete restructure and is unlikely to happen.

Could we create the Sub forums without having to restructure? As in leave all current threads in place and stress that newly created threads are created in the correct sub-forums? I appreciate that your time devoted to the website is voluntary and much appreciated but if this could happen, it could make the experience better for everyone.
Thanks!
Craig
That would in essence create more chaos then needed. Look at the things stressed now...do you see less people posting in Dev? No, they still do because ppl do not RTFM!
Could you consider cleaning up the amount of stickies? I know that all of the information in there is important but dedicating 25% of the page to stickies seems a little ridiculous, especially if you've already seen them. I can see the 5 in the developement section easily being trimmed down to 2. The worst case I've seen of sticky overload has been the G1 dev section, it has 8 stickies lmao.
I went ahead and moved 1 stiky to the sticky page, but the others need to stay - they are there for a reason. You may have seen them a dozen times but XDA grows by thousands of members everyday, those are the persons I need to read these stickys.
So, having asked for suggestions, is anything being done?
For me, this forum is dreadful. I've been around XDA for years, it has been a source of hugely useful resources. Now though, on this (G2 and Desire Z) forum, and for example on the General sub-forum, 75% of the posts on the first page refer to issues around rooted phones. I'm not alone in having a totally stock Desire Z.
There really should be some order. Is it that difficult to instigate some clear rules? If we can't have a "Stock Rom" subforum, can we not at least demand that all new posts start with something like [Stock], [Rooted] or similar?
In the past I've donated money towards the upkeep of the site. I'm writing now because my visits have become so infrequent, such is the level of disorder.
Thank you for your feedback. If I am to understand you correctly, you are frustrated because most of the post have to do with a rooted phone and you have stock? Have you ever thought that the reason for this is most of the users here have rooted their device? I am sorry but that is not something I can control. As a moderator on XDA and a multi-device owner, I am well aware of the state of forums across the board and the G2/Dz is not the only forum with rooted and non-rooted users. As of now, there is no plan on creating a special sub-section for non-rooted & rooted phones. Your best bet is to search.
As for requiring tags to sepperate the two, I have enough difficulties getting Devs to tag their work properly, just imagine how much more so it would be to demand every user do it. This would require every user to read stickes and forum rules and abide by them. Lets face it, if every user did that, XDA would be heaven.
Your donation of moneys towards XDA does not really come into play here, as a donation is given by your own free will and does not entitle you to anything extra.
XDA Admins and Moderators are working hard right now to fix some of these issues that have made our members shy away. If you pay attention to the Site Announcements, there is often news about the progress. Expect a lot of change very soon. When things are implemented however, it will be site wide, not forum specific. Keep an eye out if interested.
Well, you asked for suggestions. If you don't think the suggestion I made is worthy of action, fine.
You suggest that my "donation of moneys towards XDA does not really come into play here, as a donation is given by your own free will and does not entitle you to anything extra." The point of mentioning my donating towards the site does "come into play" in pointing out that where once I was a regular visitor, I am now less so. That is a direct result if the chaotic nature of this forum. In no way am I expecting "anything extra" and it is offensive that you suggest I am.
I don't actually want a sub-forum for rooted and non-rooted phones. I'd like posts to be made in the right place. Even today on the "General" subforum, two of the top three threads are:
"Cyangenmod 7.1.0 and higher nightlies are slow"
"Recovery error information thread (E:Cant mount /cache/recovery/command)"
The first sticky of the sub-forum "G2 and Desire Z Android Development" is the thread "Development Q&A - Ask Development Questions Here!". Assuming the aforementioned two threads don't fit into that sticky, why aren't they in the main part of the "Android development" subforum?
I eagerly await the site-wide changes.
Have a "I Agree" button
I see a lot of +1 or posts where the user agrees. It would be nice to have a 'I Agree' button and have is displayed somewhere. It might cut down on some duplicated posts.

We all want things to be posted correctly, unfortunately it almost never happens that way. This is why we have the report post feature; to help mods move things to where they belong, as we can not catch everything. You can not make a user post correctly as much as you can not make them tie their shoes correctly.
The "G2 and Desire Z Android Development" was put in place to avoid having tons of questions in the ROM threads themselves. It does not necessarily mean they cant post in Q&A, after all, that's why it is there.
The problems you mention, again, are site wide, not forum specific. This thread is more for suggestions on stikies, organization and the like. The issues you mention are being addressed site wide as I said before, and can not be handled by just me. If you are up for a good read, check out the latest site announcement. This is our attempt at "making" people post correctly.
