Since my earlier thread was requested to be closed because someone couldn't read through it right i'm reposting it in a simpler easier-to-understand manner
i want an SMS backup solution that backups my threaded messages as TEXT files,TEXT files which i can view using any of the TEXT editors on my computer.something PIM backup is incapable of/
i have searched through the forum and have found only paid solutions,i need freeware which works just as good
Is there any way that that the messages on backup to TEXT retain their threaded structure?
SMS Textual Backup
SMSBackup for WM5/6 is good tool..
I had used it almost year back...
pocketpc-software-downloads.com/software/t-free-pocketpc-smsbackup-wm6-wm5--download-hmtpdbtt.html
This will installed on phone and while you select backup location, preferably use memory card as your backup location..

You can use PIMOrganiser instead of PIMBackup it has all the features for backing up messages and even exporting them to .txt files.
Although i dunno whether the threaded form is kept intact or not coz i tried it on the classic form only.
Hope it helped...

Sprite Backup can do this. The professional version can back-up directly to a PC.
www.spritesoftware.com.
You do need the pre-release of version 2.3 - the current 2.14 will not work - or rather, if you restore a 2.1x backup, you kill the ability to receive SMS'es.
The pre-release has a few issues, but I have succesfully performed both backup and restore with this version.

Michael
well if you only want to copy sms from your xda you dont need any software... you can find all your sms from all folders in folder windows\messaging
they are .mpb files but they are merely text files chang their extensions and there you are...

Mephistodan ---> You are my hero!!! Thanks. Why o why hasn't anyone mentioned this anywhere in my search for a way to backup sms messages!!!
Not perfect, but all I really need is to save sent and recieved sms's ;-)
Thanks again!
I think the is the tip of tips... IMHO!
WM2003/xbackup can handle everything else for backup, as far as I am concerned.
F**K sprite and all other pay stuff for just the sms backup.
Personally, I think MS will (AND should) integrate sms and mms as folders in future outlook versions.

Maybe I was a bit quick to reply... I have some 0 byte files (looks like my inbox), yet I can't find the message of the sms's recieved?
The ones I have sent (and e-mail inbox) appear fine as i rewrite the mpb extensions to text...
so my question is...
where are the inbox files hiding? In the att files (attachments folder)? I don't think so, but mephistodan do you know where the recieved sms's are located, as these are really the ones I mostly would like to keep.

Talking to myself...
Now using dbExplorer (nice prog. -> think I may buy this one) to find the data in the database. The SMS inbox is called something like fldrXXXXXXX and dbExplorer lets you export the db to a *.csv file easy to use in Excel.
Works for me... no more worries that sms data is lost. I guess with some fiddeling, you could easily replace these into the database as well.

SMS / MMS / Email export program
Have you tried this program? http://xpocketpc.feűw.hu
I've done a search here / google / www.freewareppc.com and still couldn't find the SMS backup tool that I have seen floating around before. I believe SCHAPS has it on his ROM but I am unable to locate it anywhere.
If somebody would be so kind to post it or link I would be very grateful.
Thanks in advance.
Peronaly i use PIM Backup. Used it to successfully transfer SMS and Contacts from one Trinity to another.
sms backup
here you go. this is always my favorite application.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=300689&highlight=jeyo+sms+backup
Even i'll give points to PIM Backup, one of the best applications, i ever had.
Very compact and light application, but with advanced functionality. Can take a backup of messages, tasks, call log, contacts, speed dials, tasks etc. all at the same time. On top of that, you can schedule the time of backup, at which it will create a backup file, that too everyday. So that your backup is up to date.
It would be already there in some other threads, still postin' you a copy.
Adieu..
Hi,
I am trying to develop a software for diamond where you can backup all inbox sms to a xml file for storage either offline or online (or both).
However, retrieving all sms in inbox is a bit tricky but using a third party dll file like Mobile In The Hand library could be done.
How can I retrieve sms from Inbox folder without using any third party libraries? There should a way of doing so since a third party library is doing it?
I'm not a WM developer, but you could look at the source code of SMSImport, which is GNU licensed.
thx
Thanks Obsidian72 but I have seen few examples on the net but all are C++ and unfortunetly I am not a C++ developer, but Java and C#
Would be nice to see any examples in these languages
Well, if u write the program for your hobby and to learn it's nice..
Beside some SMS backup programs around , I found that most simple by using SPB backup (I guess with Sprite backup too) , and with SPB Explorer to the backup file you can read all your SMS inbox or restore TEXT (SMS) only...
something different
well, the idea is to make one that backs up your sms and store them either offline or/and online privately. Having said that, you also get to see the archive them and be able to see them too without restoring or so.
So, backup my messages, so I can delete all messages in my inbox and also be able to see the backed up messages as an archive both online and offline in my mobile just as if they were in my inbox folder.
I decided that I want to upgrade my ROM to unlock the 30 fps video on my x1a. But I want to backup all of my text messages before I do so. And I want to be able to restore them all as threaded SMS, just as they were before the upgrade. Before you guys go bashing me for wanting to backup my messages, I have personal reasons for wanting to do this, so there's no need to ask "why would you want to backup all your messages for" and other stuff like that. Just because their not important to you doesn't mean their not to somebody else lol. And I have also searched the forum for programs that backup sms, but they restore them as individual messages (not threaded) which is not what I want.
So my question is: is there a program out there that will allow me to backup and restore my SMS as THREADS? Or should I wait to get a Windows My Phone invite to do this?
I use PIMbackup. It will restore the SMS and you can choose the threads options subsequently.
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-pim-backup-v2-8.html
i tried using PIMBackup before, but i don't remember seeing a threading messages option. how do you do this?
Isn't the 30fps video a hardware issue??

I couldn't agree more. I dont see why a company as huge as Microsoft cant incorporate this into WMDC/ActiveSync. It is one thing I really miss about my Blackberry.
PIMBackup works perfect even with threaded messages I checked that few times and it's works fine
but how do i restore all messages as threads with PIMBackup? cuz from what I remember, it was restoring them as individual messages, making my phone move very sluggishly, so i stopped the restoration process. If I let it finish, will all the messages be threaded or something?
when you use PIMBackup, it will backup the way it was and restore them the way it was. There is no option to choose threaded or not, it just backs it up threaded or non-threaded.
So yea, PIMBackup is the way to go!
The X1 got sluggish because it was doing something intensive. Let it finish before you make your mind up that it doesn't do what you think it should.
It's a superb piece of software, very well written and does exactly what it says on the tin. It backs up and restores all of your PIM.
Messages restored will be threaded.
After restore phone is threading restored messages so it's need a bit of resources.
Go into messaging->sms and watch, threads will showing in real time and on the bottom bar it'll showing which messages are processing now
Hi!
I did a search in the Leo forums and none of the three results answered my question:
I plan on upgrading my Rom and therefore want to backup my SMS. I know there's a programm from SPB, but I'm sure there are others aswell.
I'm using Sense and the messages are nicely grouped in a conversation on every contact. Is a SMS backup programm capable to restore that aswell or is Sense doing that by itself when the SMS are transfered back?

I use pim backup, it backs up all messages perfectly, just as they were before.
I use Microsoft MyPhone. Works like a charm...
+1 for Microsoft MyPhone, I even use it when changing devices. It works for me every time and it's free.
Thank you guys! I'll have a look at both programs!
