Battery draining fast and extremely slow charging since flashing. - Wildfire General

Had my wildfire for a few months now, finally decided to root and flash a ROM after my service provider failed to roll out froyo. It's all been pretty simple and I've had no real difficulties, but my battery is now draining at a stupid rate.
I mean, with all the typical battery draining applications/services off it is still draining faster than pre-flash with all of them on. Literally like 1% a minute while hardly doing anything.
I've not bothered to overclock, even went so far as to underclock processor, still to no avail.
I've tried a few ROMs now and they're all the same, currently running 6.1.0 wildpuzzle. It doesn't help that I have a slow charger (original broke), this normally would do a full charge in around 10 hours so I'd leave it overnight. But now the battery drains nearly as quick as it can charge.... I've not even had it at 100% power since upgrading to Froyo.
Any ideas how to fix this? Obvious suggestions will be to try a fast charger (will do tomorrow round a friends) but I cant see this making a difference other than making it possible to fully charge and waste again in an hour after unplugging.
Battery life was typically 8-48 hours previously.

Ok, so I've finally got the battery to charger to full. However, the voltage reading is given as 4V, whereas is was previously around 4.2. Battery isn't fully charged. WAT DO? :\

Battery drains faster than it should

Hello there,
I would really like some advice - my battery is draining like water. I'm quite convinced it is the regulation of the unit; I bought a 2400mAh battery replacement and it lasted ages on first go, but then my G1 started draining stupidly fast after I'd recharged it. This also happens on the stock battery too (buy even quicker!). I'm convinced it is the regulation because a) I've never had battery problems previously and b) the battery meter starts at about 26% when I plug it it in (after the phone shuts off from it being dead and I then plug in the charger).
I actually have a bricked G1 that still charges batteries, so I thought I'd do an overnight charge on the battery that way, to 'remind' the other G1 what a 100% battery is like, but that didn't seem to work either.
Can someone help? Is this a known problem? I would really appreciate any advice.
Mark
Things that cause ridiculous battery drain;
Backlight, keep it at no more than 30%
Wifi - turn off search for open networks,
Gps - wow does this drain

GPS doesn't really drain battery unless it's actively being used...at least not on my phone.
You can also try disabling 3G if you're not in a 3G area. It will keep trying to find a 3G signal, which really drains battery.
For the record, I have a stock battery that I get ~13-16 hours on from a single charge... my backlight is at 40%, GPS is always on, and I use wifi whenever I want to surf the web and am near an open network.
OP...if your battery is lasting you only a couple of hours, then I'd try to reflash your ROM. Might help...
Wow 13 to 16, I am lucky if I get 6 with 30% backlight, and wi-fi and gps off, I have always gotten that on ever rom even stock with no widgets, you are one of the very few with good battery life cause I have seen many complaints about short battery ranges

Yeah, that's on a normal, moderate usage day. If I use it heavily, with a lot of wifi and web browsing, then I'll get around 10.
Maybe your battery needs to be replaced... could just be old and not holding a charge properly.
It's 2 months old, has done it from day one, I also have another battery that does it too that I kept from a previously brick g1, so one 3 phones, all the same battery life but then I use it quite heavily, always browsing on the web since my computer burned out
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=555048
try that? 3rd gen battery could help..
Thanks for the suggestions, but it's not a wifi/3g/brightness etc problem - I've had a G1 for six months, I know exactly how much power should be consumed. It's also not the battery; I have two stock batteries and a brand new 2400mAh battery, which for the first few charges lasted about 2 - 2.5 days and was brilliant (as it should be), but now doesn't last all that long.
I may have made the situation slightly better however - I did a Nandroid backup, wiped to factory (well, Cyanogen 4.0.4 anyway) and booted into that. I then restored the backup and when I plugged back in to the charger, the meter was at 85%, and seemed to take a normal amount of time to charge (and not jump to 100%). It remains to be seen if the problem is solved, I've yet to have the battery drain (this is a good sign though) an plug in the charger to see if it will jump from 0 to 25 or not.
I'll re-post when I know.
run the battery down until the phone shuts off without plugging it in.
charge the battery while the phone is off over night
do this 3-5 times and see if you get any improvement.
also remember some of the cheap 2400 batts from ebay and such claim 2400 but that is from 3.5V to 3.0V. The G1 considers 3.2V to be dead so you only get from 3.5V to 3.2V which sucks.
I'm with gridlock on this one. My batteries suck. It always needs a mid day charge. And to the poster that said to reflash a rom, that is bad advice. There is known issues with getting poor performance out of these batteries. I have 2 and both do the same. Got the second one from complaining to t-mo about how bad it sucks.
Reflashing seems to have worked...the 2400mAh battery seems a lot better now, it lasted nearly two days (it runs at 3.7v, according to my battery diagnostic), I've only just recharged it last night. When I plug it in, it charges normally and linearly now, instead of jumping straight to 25%.
So my advice, if anyone is having similar problems to me, would be to try a reflash.
Thanks for your help everyone.

Super slow charging since flashing Froyo.... what gives?

Anyone else notice this?? I've run both the first and the second 2.2 leaked Rom, and both exhibit this same issue. Okay first a little info: stock battery, stock HTC wall charger and stock use cable. I don't charge off a use port on a comp, always the wall charger.
Now, on stock 2.1, I could run the battery all the way down, connect the charger, and be back to full charge in max 1.5 hours. On 2.2, it takes more than twice that long. So I went thru the whole downgrade process (pain!) to get back to stock 2.1, ran that for a day and confirmed, charging on the wall charger gets about 1% a minute. Went back to 2.0 radio and second leaked 2.2 ota, and yeah, back to taking 2-3 mins to get a percent, about 3.5-4 hours to full charge.
So..... what gives? Anyone else noticing this? Can it be fixed via patch or something? Is it the radio, the new kernel, what?
its probably the new radio. i dont know how the radio directly affects battery life tho. it is not the kernel, because i am running cm6 and the problems have persisted on cm6 too. i have been experienceing these problems too

The radio could be the #2 drain on a battery (short of 100% on screen) ... if the radio is not getting the signal it wants, it hunts and hunts, and 1x draws incredible power from the battery vs 3G.
The buggy radio and buggy beta could easily be causing you trouble in your area, if they just don't play right with the signal you are getting. Hopefully when the non-beta radio comes out, things will change.
Mind you, my battery life seems fine, no worse than stock anyways. It's just the charging time that has gotten dramatically worse.
Same..there's no reason my phone should be charging for close to 4 to 5 hours I don't know what's up with that

I may be all wet...but there is a battery file in your phone that I think gets wiped when you install a new ROM.
I do all of my charging at night, so I don't know how long it takes after wiping and installing ROMs. I do remember it taking about three hours to charge the battery the very first time I plugged it in.

Doesn't explain why after I wiped and went back to 100% stock my charge time went back to taking no more than 90 mins...
Nah I flashed roms all the time on my Droid never took this long to charge. Even on my inc cyanogen 6 never took that long its definitely something about 2.2 roms or sky raider.
I have this problem on mine and made a thread on androidforums. After watching a few things I came to the conclusion its the cpu speed. It never throttles down below about 500-600 mhz. Open setCPU and don't touch anything. You'll see it won't drop to the 200s like its supposed to.
Someone came up with a work around by using setcpu. Create a profile for when the screen is off so that the max is 245 mhz. You'll find that your charge times will be a lot better.
Even though this works I would like to know why the phone is not throttling down at idle like its supposed to. Someone with more knowledge might have the answer.
I had noticed that and posted a thread about it awhile back. I have a hard time believing that is the sole reason for tripping charge times though

all the explanations posted so far would be a cause of battery DRAIN issues, which most people claim to see better overall battery life since jumping on 2.2 (myself included). none of these could explain why charge times would take twice as long. i myself have had better battery life on 2.2, but charge times are definitely in the 3-4 hour range as opposed to the 1.5 hours it was before. BUT, one theory is htc might have lowered the charge input from what it was before, meaning a slower charge time but preserving battery health and possibly increasing battery life. just a guess, chemistry majors correct me if im wrong lol.

If the phone isnt underclocking even when the screen is off, it would be using more power even while charging, which would explain the long charge times.
Proof of concept would be, if you try and charge while using bluetooth and gps in the car you may not lose charge, but it will not charge as quickly as if you are not using those things.
if the CPU use is high then the battery would not charge as quickly.
I'm still not so certain that the setcpu profle has solved my problem, still havent been conscious of it enough to be sure.

Common sense would tell you that if something is draining the battery, charge times would be higher...
Gbenj. Its definitely not a full fix for it since it requires the screen to be off but it has definitely cut down on my charge times. Its still no where near what it was for 2.1 but atleast I dont have to wait 4 hours for 10%.

All understood, BUT, yesterday when using gps nav for a few hours and on the car charger, i was actually still LOSING battery. nothing else was on (bluetooth or wifi) no calls, no texts or anything. 2.1, i still gained charge while using gps on the car charger as well as having an overclocked kernel. so its definitely not a cpu issue considering peak processor speed has not been tampered with.
Just a thought but perhaps the FROYO Rom that you flashed has a fix in it for the problem with charging. In otherwords perhaps it is actually charging the whole battery. I haven't paid any attention to mine as to whether it is taking longer. I usually just charge while I sleep and then while I am in the car and sometimes at my desk if I plan to plug in for something I will just leave it plugged so I get more use of higher drain features when I go home. I noticed though that if you bump charge as recommended, (pre-update) I only did it once and saw little to no improvement, it took for ever. After I charged it to green, I turned it off and charged it to green, unplugged it plugged it back charged to green, and repeated until it was green when I first plugged in. Now it seems to me that the problem is a software/system issue so it would be plausible that a software solution could be developed. I haven't tried since I updated and the ROM I am currently using gives me the same battery life I had before but now I can leave GPS on all the time something I couldn't even think about with Stock everything.
So I may be wrong but it may be that it is taking longer to charge because it is actually charging the chunk of battery that it hadn't been charging before. Just a thought and since I am pretty sure I don't have the same ROM you have I won't venture to test and post results but perhaps you could.

bump charging is still required by anyone on 2.2 so its not charging any more of the battery than what it used to, just a lot slower.
Agreed, it doesn't make bump charging any less required for "full" charge, also, this theory would mean we'd be getting significantly better battery life.... I most definitely was not.
It's possible they reduced the charger output to the battery to increase battery life/reduce heat while charging.

if by battery life you mean overall battery health over time then yes, that is what i believe as well. also, these leaked froyo roms are all developmental, not final releases. im guessing that they may have tried a fix for battery issues but it didnt work out right in these roms so im hoping in the final release it will be truly fixed.
has anyone noticed that the battery stops charging after a while? it almost seems like the system is stopping the charge because its running for so long. anyone seen anything like this?

Horrible Battery Life after Installing Android! :(

After successfully booting into android for the first time my battery life in android skyrocketed down, but that didn't really bother me.
The real problem is that even in WINMO my battery life is less than half what it used to be, and even after a night (8 hours) of charging (In a wall socket, not USB) its not at 100%
this has me very worried, any ideas? thanks in advance!
did you read anything before you started this thread...........
yes, i did. everyone is having a problem when they charge in android it gets to 90% then they switch to winmo and within minutes it picks back up to 100%.
this is not the case for me, my battery does not jump back up, it drains quickly even in winmo, and when it gets low its not just reading it improperly it just dies, so no this is not the same problem
did you know there are fixes .......and that your problem is not new at all....i am sorry to say that this is a know problem and you would want to ask in the thread of what build you are using and if you really wanted help you would post what build your using and what kernal , but no one can help you at all when you simply state you have battery issues
drain your battery in winmo till it dies, so the battery resets, then charge the battery again till full, it should be allright again.
thank you dipdap i will try that

I strongly advise you NOT to do so. Draining a Lithium-Ion battery entirely is detrimental to its overall life/capacity. So instead of ruining your battery (or going a step towards ruining it), simply turn off your phone, charge it until you get the green LED, boot back to WinMo and it should be alright. If it isn't, look for another way, but completely draining your battery should not be the method of choice.
nobody said to drain it copletely, just till winmo dies, which should be fine. I do this once every couple of months by accident, and have never had a problem. I agree that you should not drain the battery completely though, so, make sure as soon as winmo dies, plug in to a charger.
what rom are you running? I am using shubcraft 1.5 and mine charges to 99% And I can get a full day out of my battery with pretty decent use.
Are you using setcpu cause that could have a major impact also do you have wifi, gps or bt on. I know gps has been known to cause some major drain while in sleep mode.
There is also a thread where people are trying to find solutions to the high amount of drain in the development forum.
We use current widget to create a log and monitor Our drain. You should be seeing less than 10ma while sleep I usually see between 3-7ma while sleep
Funny how when you are watching your battery it drains faster. When you are watching the clock time goes slower.

You can look at this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770903
It was very helpful for me to identify how much current is being used while in sleep mode and active.
Download "current widget" from market and monitor your current supply for 30 minutes during your phone's screen is off.
Yeah with the screen off you cant see any thing but thankfully the log will be written for the current widget every min.
If your current comes out to be bellow 10ma during this time then you are doing good and should last you one day of usage else you need to pinpoint what is drinking all the juice even while your phone sleeps
Read the thread ALL OF IT, it will help you understand better.
Cheers.
alright thanks for all the help guys, the battery drain actually worked although i felt strange doing it, but still my android life isn't so great, i would love for it to work completely though because the only wquivalent option on my carrier is the Captivate (Galaxy S) and that thing is ugly compared to the HD2
such problem
I have such problem with battery drain under WM, after i run and quit android, but i found a solution, just pull out your battery few times next just recharge it and it will be OK .

Battery 1% for ages

Hello, as tittle says I use my defy with cm7.1 fine it runs the battery down at normal pace (around 10 hours heavy use then gives me my warning at 10% and flashed LED then down to 1% .
That's good right?
Problem is at 1% then I can carry on using it at 1% for about 2 hours (so far) it wont die????
I even got a battery drainage app and that ran for over an hour.
What can I do?
Is it a miracle?
defy cm7
Try battery calibration.
at 1%... just keep doing something till it actually turns off... then charge the battery till it reaches 100% without a break.
I got the same issue with CM7.2 nightly. It was solved for me performing the battery recalibration, as darshaonline suggested. To do this, just follow the steps for 'Battery recalibration in the Cyanogenmod Wiki'
me and some of my friends have the same problem. we all have 2300 mAh battery, but the phone reads only 500mAh, so it shows super fast (30-40%/h) draining, but when we reach 1%, we can carry on using for about a day. we couldnt find any solution to get the battery capacity reading right, the only thing we could come up with to find out the current charge was to guess it based on the battery voltage. our range is from 3,2V to 4.2V.

[Q] Battery Meter on Mango Inaccurate?

So i recently flashed CleanDFT ROM, first couple of days the meter read out 1 day and 18 hours which im very surprised then it went down to 1 day and 4 hours, now this morning i unplugged and it tells me i got 19 hours left from full charge, should i go by this? or is there something wrong?

Redirecting you to the right place.
If you have just flashed a new rom, in general, you need to go through a couple of battery cycles before the battery read can be accurate. I remember when flashing my ATT FUze I had to wait 2-3 complete charging cycles ie. discharging battery to 10% and charging back to full before I could get accurate reading. If you are experiencing worse battery time than before flashing after 2-3 cycles you might need to reflash the rom; you should see better battery time with custom roms, so I have heard.
I also wouldn't go by the battery saver timing, I would go by wpbench or real time use to get an accurate reading on battery time. I have a 1800 mah battery in my focus and it reads 24 hours on battery life
As far as i know, doesnt all the ROMs have basically the same battery life?
Ill be going out of town sometime this week and ill be out most of the day, i need a rom thatll at least last a whole 12 to 14 hours at the most or whole day at best of just occasional twittering and occasional checks on facebook and probably capture some pictures and a video and maybe an hour at most on music? im sure this phone can handle it but idk what you guys suggest
I have the same issue with ATT samsung focus with Roger latest updates, the battery meter is just not accurate, sometimes full and just reboot upon eject from the micro usb. The battery was fine until recently. Found a few other with the same issue online, no solution available yet.
*pulling out battery doesn't work*
The solution is exactly the same as it is on a laptop.
Lithium ion batteries, and, actually, come to think of it, pretty all rechargeable batteries lose capacity over time. The phone, to begin with, doesn't have a good idea of how much capacity is left, and it has to estimate based on previous performance. This is partially a result of battery manufacturers going as cheap as possible with the circuitry in lithium ion batteries.
The phone needs to figure out how old your battery is. This data is definitely lost with a new rom. Leave it to charge overnight, then unplug it and let the battery run all the way to dead. Charge it again, and your battery percentages should be correct. It may take more than one cycle, but the meter should settle into a correct estimate eventually.
Incorrect battery stats are a possible reason for fluctuations in battery life and reseting them as described in the previous post can help.
Another thing which you can do is use an app like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1328730 to check the reported mV rating of your battery at full charge. That can serve as an indicator of the battery life you can expect with your current battery stats.
