First, sorry to hear about your device. Bummer. I keep it in my back pocket sometimes and I hope I never forget to take it out.
If you're able to keep it, please do donate it for development. Midget_1990 is the one you want to make arrangements with if you don't mind donating it to the cause. This will help us start earlier than previously. Once we get Midget_1990 his phone we can send it to another developer I have in mind. Thanks for the post and offering to help. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
insurers arent open today (how lazy) and as i have no phone or digital camera cant post pics its right accross the screen top to bottom. if i can hold on to it or as much as possible might just send in the main device minus battery keyboard etc i will try posting whats available to Midget_1990. will let you guys know tomorrow assuming i get it sorted and hope to get it back soon ........

if you're using the t-mob insurance they'll want the other one back, and make sure if you get it swapped in t-mob store that you take in everything that came with it, to send back, otherwise they'll charge you full retail price! I've found it best to take the unit and new battery from the offered box and leave everything as is.. this from exchanging 3 universals through that scheme..
They definitely will not send you a new battery and yes you will be charged for anything you don;t return.
I had a nightmare year last year with my Universal - without being aware when I knocked it the screen cracked three times. Each time Orange replaced but I life in fear of my Advantage bought from a 3rd party along with a Vodafone contract (T-Mobile doesn't exist around here) which is only on the house insurance.
So please don't post it this subject you're making me nervous!

Have you tried approaching one of the mobile phone insurers for your own contract. Phonesafe thru T-mobile charge £8.99 pcm - I wonder if they would provide a policy to you direct. Must be worth trying because your house policy excess may be quite high?
A quick google shows lots of mobile phone insurers - see for example: Mobile Phone Insurer reviews
Maybe then you can read this thread without squirming!

I am on my fourth Ameo (1st one GPS stopped), the following ones have all been faulty replacements (until my most recent one, which works).
The point is that when I did the first exchange it was in a T-mobile store and I needed it urgently. The GPS had just stopped working but I did not have the box with me. I asked them to do an exchange on the undertaking that I would bring the box into the store the following week to swap it over. However, when I went in the following week, they said they had sent the other box (i.e. the box from the exchanged one) away and didn't need my box.
The other exchanges have all been through T-mobile's call centre - they send out (by courier) a new handset (not including keyboard, battery, screen protector etc) and take the old one away at the same time. It worked quite well - they given you a morning or afternoon slot, which the courier seemed to stick to. If you don't hand over your handset, they don't hand over the new one!!!
well alll i managed was an extra styli, and replaced my keyboard/case and phone so there all shiney but no extra. damn but i tried my best sorry guys, maybe i can 'lose' it next time and theyl never know....
Just installed pocket hack master and it shows stable @ 728 Mhz my old one couldnt even run stable at 663 only at 624 i know many havent being able to overclock but now i can
Hi
My imagio Start and back keys are stuck!!!
anyone else with the same problem!!!
Stuck Buttons
This is an issue with the Imagio. The only real fix is to have VZ send a replacement.
There has been a discusion on it here at PPC
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=99190
And, if you look on the VZ forums there are more people talking about this.

yeah- like the guy said- a whole thread dedicated to the subject. and then you find out that even though you pay for insurance instead of getting a new phone they send you someone else's old phone that was broke and they fixed for you. nice. when my end button got stuck down i ended up ripping it off and fooling with it until it unstuck. had to use a little adhesive (totally lame) to make the cover stay on the actual button. definitely does not work as good. after that i started looking into all the ways i could to avoid using those buttons.
xda shutdown.
volume app's.
etc.
Mine stuck within the first 30 days so I made them give me another brand new one. They tried the certified like new thing with me but I wouldn't accept that. It did take a fair amount of *****ing on my part before they gave in.
Why would I pay for something new that doesn't last a month and accept a refurb?
So my point is, if your phone breaks soon after you bought it, don't accept anything less.
Also, I'm on my 3rd one. Verizon's policy after the 3rd one within a year is to get you into something different that's new and of "equal value" if you want. However, they will not openly tell you that unless you insist on it.
I'm on #2 and I am tossed between using the buttons as little as possible or as much as possible.

Hi guys, have just referenced this issue and thread in the Wiki. Hopefully some more travellers will find the info and offer some assistance.
freakin buttons
My wife and I both have Imagios. I have had mine replaced once already the buttons on the replacemnet are stuck and a new one is on the way. The buttons on my wife's are now stuck and she has a replacement on the way.
Verizon is telling me that they no longer let you get a different phone after 3 replacements. I would yell and complain, but what phone do they have thats better?
Add me to the list. Windows button decided to get stuck last night. I will say that it was particularly cold (36F) and I had been outside for some time, thus making the device fairly cold. When I depressed the button, I noticed that it was hesitant to move, then made an quiet yet audible *click* and that was that. I have a feeling that the defect lies in the membrane beneath the button and when exposed to cold, it becomes inflexible and cracks. I'm debating whether to actually go to the VZW store or call the customer service. If I actually go to the store, will they likely give me a new device (if stocked) or do they have refurbs in the store? So long as the refurb is in brand-new condition, it doesn't matter to me as I have a feeling this will just happen again. While I love this phone, I'm hoping warmer days will make this a non-issue. In any case, it's a bit of a bummer when virtually every day I have impromptu debates with a droid owner about who's phone is better. Last night, I lost.

If you have proof of purchase (IE original packaging, maybe a receipt), it may be worthwhile to contact HTC directly. I would assume that the phone was purchased w/o a plan and/or you're not a current VZW customer anyway. I would assume then that any defect/warranty issues would default to the manufacturer. I believe HTC has a 90-day warranty.
Hi
i tried conatcting local HTC india ,.,.,. they cant help.... can i get replacement on ebay or anywhere ... plssss its urgent
stuck buttons avoidance
I have a solution that seems to have ensured I don't have this problem. I placed a screen protector from my mp3 player across the buttons (since most screen protectors for the imagio only cover just the screen itself), and then using an xacto knife i carefully cut the excess mp3-screen protector around the outside edge of the send and end button and along the bottom of all the buttons such that the remaining film secures all the buttons together.
This seems to have some effect in stabilizing the buttons and making sure nothing snags on them or prys on them and it seems to keep my phone from having the problem reported here. I've had mine on for at least 3 months and not a single button problem.

What exactly did HTC say?...They warranty these phones for one year, and they were released in october, so its not out of their hardware warranty period.
Is the ESN on this phone valid? Something isn't adding up here.

Hi
The problem is i got the phone from my sister who lives in US.... i live in INDIA!!! bangalore to be precise!!! So HTC say they wont help.... my sis will be back after 6 months... LOL
Ps whats ESN... is tht the IMEI!!!! well its GSM unlocked thats as far as i know
Here's an idea: Call HTC USA and pretend you're wherever your sister lives in the US. Explain the issue (leaving out the bought as gift, sent to india part) and then when they say they'll fix it (which, if the phone isn't stolen or otherwise they will) send it to your sis in the US and have her send it to HTC from a US address. I'm sure with the large number of questionable phones floating around india/asia they're hesitant to replace it. When in doubt, lie. You purchased a product and you deserve coverage. Don't let their resistance stop you; you're certainly not doing anything illegal, simply circumventing their "security" measures.

I am currently having some troubles with my volume-up button...it doesn't react to all presses and there will be times where I'm driving and I try to increase the volume and it will take 5 presses to activate it. If I try pressing it five times later, it might register all 5 presses. If I send it in for a device swap (the one where they ship you a new phone) what will happen if they get the device and come to the conclusion that the volume-up button is fine? Will they keep the $500+ deposit?
Additionally my vibration motor sometimes completely stops responding for a period of time but I can't seem to figure out what triggers it to do that, and it doesn't happen often but it happens enough to bother me as it's pretty hard to use the touch softkeys when they don't have any feedback! I considered it was just CM6 as my old phone never had that problem and I didn't recall my new phone having that problem when it was running stock 2.2, but now with an AOSP gingerbread rom it exhibited the same problem for a few minutes.
What can I do? I would send it in for repair but I won't be around to pick it up and while my parents can keep it while I'm gone it's a bit useless to spend $400 on a phone and not be able to use it, right?
You have to be nuts to do anything in those terms. Giving your phone and a full value deposit? And not being sure of the rules for them to keep it? Where do you live? North korea?
On the other hand I'm trying for months to get an answer from google about my buggy touch screen and I'm still ignored.

Don't be so paranoid!
HTC wont charge you for a swap unless they don't receive the phone within 10 business days of you receiving the swap. And even then, they will call you before charging you the $500 deposit.
My power button would only work half the time. I had the same worry as you.
Just don't worry. Get a replacement, and send yours in after you get your new one, easy as that.

That's because everyone's got buggy touchscreens. Only solution is to buy a different phone
As far as the device swap, I had a positive experience when I bought one secondhand and it had a problem with rebooting when it got too hot, and they had a new phone to me in a day or two. That was an obvious problem, but I'm just curious about something minor like this.
ANYTHING wrong your phone (edit -- besides software related mess-ups you did yourself) allows a swap. Even dust under the screen!
The severity of the problem has nothing to do with anything! If something isn't working, they'll give you a new one.
HTC really are the ****... Let's just hope they keep it up, as they get bigger and bigger.

Do we get a refurb or new replacement?i just sent mine coz i was having boot loop problems.
I've decided I'm going to get a replacement from HTC and send mine back when I get back from vacation. My power button started going out a while ago but with a combination of the app I created, LockMyDroid, and Trackball wake, I only need to use the power button once every 2-3 weeks.
The only reason I haven't done anything until now is that I've been debating if I'm going to regret giving up my AMOLED screen for an SLCD. I think if I had them side-by-side I'd be able to tell a difference but since I will likely sell my N1 in a few months for a Tegra2 device it would be nice to have it as close to mint condition as possible. I bought mine January 6th so my time to get a replacement is definitely running out
If you're looking for them to send you a replacement, I hope your bootloader isn't unlocked. (You mentioned running the AOSP Gingy rom.)
Just send it in for repair. A signature is required for delivery anyway so they won't just leave it on your doorstep. You can opt to pick it up at a FedEx location as well.

Locked or unlocked doesn't matter, as long as its hardware related. I've heard this many times that they acknowledge unlocked bootloaders.

I had the power button fail on mine and was told that since they are not making N1 phones anymore the phone would be a refurbished model if I chose the replacement option. I purchased my phone on the 1st week of Jan 2010 and was not willing to give up my AMOLED screen so I chose the repair option. Sent it in today via overnight prepaid label. Wiped the dust off the old Samsung phone I had and I am using that until my N1 comes back.
For those that had an amoled than received an lcd were you disappointed? Could you tell the difference? Mine has a couple stuck pixels. Debating on whether it would be worth it or not to warranty out.

I'm honestly hoping I get an SLCD because I'm sick of the fuziness the pentile layout creates as well as how red-tinged the display gets when the brightness is low. Got a device swap back in august and it was still an AMOLED unit, no idea what this one will be.
Update on my N1 repair (power button failure). I sent the unit out on 12/22 via fedex overnight, HTC got my N1 on 12/23, did the repair and sent it out the same day. I am scheduled for delivery today!!!!! That is the quickest turn around time I have ever experienced for any kind of repair. I did not think there was any chance I would get my N1 back before the holiday.
FYI, my N1 has an unlocked bootloader, rooted with the Evil Desire Rom on it. HTC obviously did not have any problem with that. I am glad I chose the repair option instead of the replacement option. I have taken great care of my N1, had the full Skinomi skin and most of all the AMOLED screen. Only bad thing is I have to stay home to wait for the delivery.
Hey Guys
I just wanted to know,if someone of you got the same experience than me!
Today my Volume +- button popped out and I cant put it back beacause the sluggy glew stuff under it doesn't hold it anymore!
I mean what is that..
So this phone only gots two mechanical buttons and I lose one of 'em ?! Hahahaha thats so poor!
Do you think I can get it to repair or replace the phone?!
I still got warranty and I pay for it every month... so what do you think?
Anyone had this problem too?!
Thanks in advance and sorry for my poor english
Contact HTC. They will probably issue a replacement for you.

Same thing happened to me. I'm with Orange UK and they replaced it under guarantee, but it cost me £50! They classed it as "Accidental Damage"
Hi, I had same problem, it came off but luckily I didn't lose it and super-glued it back on which is ok but not perfect, but I see you can get replacements on Ebay for about £11.00 delivered from Hong Kong. And its a different fixing so looks like it would not come off again. Think I will get one myself.
that sounds bad.
suggest using a case to prevent this.
Mine was in a case, it was the constantly taking off the battery cover to replace the battery (due to crap battery life) that made it come off.
Happened to me, DO NOT contact your carrier. Get straight onto HTC, it is a hardware defect and you are covered for 2yrs with them. Mine was picked up the day after I phoned them and returned fully functional for free three days later..
Here are some numbers to phone..

You shouldn't have accepted this! That's a bit like a door coming off your car (extreme I know) then your dealer claiming accidental damage.
Try and deal with the manufacturer directly if you can.

Disgusting, write back to them saying you've done some research and there is no way you should have been charged as HTC them selves fix it for free and say you want your money back or will go through trading standards. Either way you will win.
Well I brought it to my O2 store today ( it's where I have bought the phone )
They said they're gonna send it to HTC. They'll prolly repair it. But this guys gave me everything ( battery and all covers back home )
If they're gonna say I gotta pay something to repair this thing, I'm gonna fire up the hell for them.
I mean, that not supposed to be... I have probably opened the battery cover only 3-5 times. Isn't it built to last for longer
Would HTC still fix this if you are rooted and have a custom ROM?

Even tho they shouldnt make problems, cos how can a custom rom brake a button
My volume up button is now broken, but have no time to go for replacement yet. The app Quick Settings is really useful for me now. It replaces the long press on search button to a customizable control panel.
This will do a job.
iMHO, volume buttons are the worst about this phone. Second worst thing is the battery cover.

Well I actually need my phone daily as navigation system and stuff. I really miss it right now got such a crappy Nokia 61...sumthing.
Well... you are right. the volume button feels so cheap and the backcovers are the worst I have seen on a phone yet. they dont even look nice.
The Sensation looks way better.
My volume + but is actually quite stiff and you have to press it that bit harder to get it to work.
Shall I leave it for now I'm not too bothered if it does break then I can get it replaced?

I accidently bent/snapped mine as I thought I was pulling out the battery compartment. It was dark and I was tired
Followed advice on here and rung HTC and my network 3 who both said I'd have to pay for repair.
Looking at getting the part on eBay however the delivery is estimated between 12 and 35 days! The price is a joke as well, £12...but it's more the delivery times from Hong Kong that I don't want.
Does anyone know any alternative ways to source a volume button please? Any quicker ways? Thanks
Unfortunately those seem to be the only ways unless you can find a local dealer of them. Try a phone repair shop.
I have read something about guarantee and software mods. When it's a hardware problem, that can't be caused by the software it isn't necessary to unroot and so on. So when they say, they won't repair it because you lost your guarante, you can assort on your right.
But I recommend to unroot and so on to avoid any problems with HTC.
Same to me guys, was very hangover and tried to replace battery but i removed the volume "-" instead ehhe
i'm on chat with htc right now.
They say that will send somebody to pick up the phone , analyze the problem and they will see if everything is under guarantee or they will estimate the cost ... something that i can or can't accept, anyway they will send back me the phone in likely 2 weeks with a cost of 20€ for the expedition .

OK, get a new one.
Two things:
First, you can't tell them you want an exchange because of the screen. It's not a valid warranty exchange and secondly, if you don't have insurance then expect a charge of $29.99 to process: $20 processing fee and $9.99 shipping fee. They changed this, most likely, because of people sending in their phones with nothing wrong with them(per the warranty). The processing fee just started 2 days ago.
Edit: Oh, don't forget that you'll most likely get the same type of screen because of all the people sending in their phones to try to get a good one by saying the problem is something else.
