My personal impression is that WM camera performance is superior to that of the Android on HD2 in all Android variations so far.
Is it a "built in" deficiency of the Android? Should proper camera performance be expected from "native" Androids like the Desire HD?"
I must convesse that the camera works better with WinMo. With Andriod is much less sharp. Got to life with it for now but i'm looking for a better van install.

I am also very curious
I am also wondering this same thing. I have noticed that the pictures in android are pretty poor quality. On all builds that I have tried with my hd2. So I am also curious if the phones with native android os have better cameras. I had a original my touch with a terrible camera.
But I would expect more from the camera on the hd2
I've had the exact opposite experience, I've found that Android pictures are far better than WM pics. They're sharp & the colors are correct, versus orange-tinged pics in WM.

What build are using. And is it sense or stock android. Also I wasn't necessarily comparing it to wm exclusively. Just quality in general.
By my impression, sense camera gets better quality photos compare to stock camera app.

By saying "Android pictures", do you mean "native" Android (phone designed for Android") or Android ported to WM "native" piece, like HD2?
I think sense will make a diff here, some setting may require tweaking....

Also had that impression. First Android build I tried was FroyoStone 3.2 and picture taken from camera looked much sharper than in WinMo.
Froyostone sense has for some reason super good cam quality you can get it here.

Currently, I'm running froyostone and the camera app only displays quality as "3mpx" when in reality the HD2 has a 5mpx one.
Which android build allows full camera quality? Is this the type of thing a new zimage would fix or is it more of a build issue?
It's kind of driving me crazy.... I've built a mostly functional daily use build where everything but the full camera (and WiFi hotspot, which I know is being worked on) is working.
Also, what's the story with 720p video recording? Is the HD2s camera capable of that resolution?
If anyone would like to see the steps I took to make my daily use build, a tutorial is on my website but as a new user, I am unable to post links.

There are already builds with the full 5MP camera working (mattc nexusleo, for example).
Obviously the Leo's camera is able to take 720p videos, and in theory even 1080p, in fact 1920*1080 is something like 2MP... The problem is in codecs and CPU usage, but soon we'll have 720p as the N1 and the Desire have.. And probably we'll never see 1080p because it's too big to calculate proprely for the CPU, and it would take too much space on the SD, too...
mattc NexusLeo v1 has the camera working perfectly at 5mpx.
I don't want to use no sense ROM anymore. The interface is very crude.
Is there any solution for HTC sense ROM with 5MP camera?

Each to their own, but I think the Android 2.2 interface with LauncherPro is superb.... I am fed up with the HTC Sense look, its like WinMo (and I am not going back there again! !!! )
If you are willing to pay for an app then vignette will not only give you full resolution but will give you a much more robust camera app with a ton of features and much better jpeg compression

I've installed Mattc's great Android version on my HD2, and the first thing I notice is that both the camera and the camcorder work WAY (WAY) better under Droid than under WinMO. The bad white balance issues seem to be gone under Droid. Isn't that a proof that the camera problems were only a software bug, and not a hardware issue?
Please share your experience about this issue here - maybe it's just observer error from me.
Thanks.
Does the video recording also improved to do 720p like the Evo?
I don't know what was wrong with your windows install, but the camera/video on my HD2 is incredible under windows mobile. It's actually better than my $300 point and shoot camera, which is really a sad statement for my camera, but the HD2 is great.

No offense meant, man, but I seriously doubt this. I have two other camera devices, a LG Renoir phone and a reflex Sony digital camera, both take way better pictures than the HD2. It's not even a resolution problem, the colors are just totally ****ed up.
Sorry if I'm not the usual HD2 blind fanatic and know to recognize the phone's weaknesses - even though I like my phone a lot otherwise.
I'm an EE. I don't get excited about things just because I think it's "cool". The camera is actually very good on my HD2. Should I post some example pics? Maybe you have the first revision of HD2? I have the TMobile one with the yellow reset button (revision 2).
Obviously, when I need to take a picture of something far away, my point-and-shoot does a lot better because it has optical zoom, but the HD2 does really well at medium range. My wife, who doesn't get excited at all about technology even mentioned that she was impressed with its pictures.
Proof by the example:
Both camera software have exactly the same settings and auto white balance, and Windows Mobile has a very recent ROM with the latest versions of all software (Artemis).
Windows Mobile:
Android:
The difference is obvious. The Android photo has natural colors, while the Windows Mobile one has ugly shades of purple/pink and is generally ugly.
The Windows Mobile camera software is clearly still bugged at least on some versions of the HD2. It's definitely not the hardware, since if it was, Android wouldn't be able to take good shots either.
EDIT: And yes, I have an older model of HD2.

wow man, youre garden looks like mess
i have canon 500d other than hd2, so, its taking better pictures in every resolution option. i know, i just cant compare this two devices photographing performance, but like said before in the first posts, hd2's colors looks like mess, wb is awful. the only good thing is macro performance i think.
but its still better than wm 6.5. wm just, i dunno
Yeah, I also take way better shots with my Sony Alpha (and even with my LG Renoir), but at least in Android, the HD2 photos look "decent" for a mobile phone. The windows one just look... well... VERY bad.
Oh, and that's not my garden... well, that's only like 5% of it. The rest is behind the door at the back, this is only the "Tomato + a few flowers" part
hmm... in Camcorder mode, doesn't the auto-focus no longer work when recording? It just stucked at the focus point when the record button is tapped no matter where and what you're trying to aim at. Any fix for that?

So your camera in Android (that is capped to 3 MP) performs better then the camera in WinMO?(That has 5 MP)
How did you manage to do that?

Don't believe everything that is written in the still experimental Android UI. The camera also does 5MP in Android.
And it's not a resolution problem - it's a color problem.
Wildcopper,
You stated that the video recorder is also better.
Does it record 720p like the Evo?
So you are saying the Android picture in the example looks better than the WinMobile one? Personally, I think the white walls and the roof look better in the Android picture, but most of the other stuff, especially the brown, looks a little better in the WinMobile picture. I don't know, they are so close, I can barely tell the difference. This is really what you are complaining about?
Maybe just don't have any ability to judge colors.... I don't know the difference between purple and fuchsia.
Seriously, the image taken with Android is much better for natural colour balance. Get your eyes tested! A lot of the picture taken under WinMo has a purple tint.
I think it will be better if you follow this steps
hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584765
Mine doesn't recognize MMC
It keeps saying "Please insert an SD card before using the camera".
Obviously MMC is in, there is whole Android system.
Has anybody experienced that?
Thanks guys

yes it has purple tint.. especially at low light environment. the picture is crap . unusable. when flash on the light bounce back from any nearest object
Um....to the guy asking about 720p recording....like the EVO 4G? Not yet.....maybe in the future

I totally agree with you on that point, I even think that the autofocusing part/algorithm is better on Android than on WM. Used to get a lot of "blurry" pictures just from pushing the "shoot"-button even though WM had everything into focus. This problem is gone with Android, dunno if it's only related to a different button layout, but it's clearly better.
Is it me or the quality of photos taken in Android is a lot worse than the ones taken in WM?
any hint/tip/advise on this?

I think the same. It's as the white balance doesnt' work fine, isn't it?
Hi
they are worse! thats just one thing!
the resolution of the android photo capture is 2MP (1600x1200) instead of the real 5MP (2560x1920). ant the light exposure whith the LED's in the dark is sometimes to bright... (white-balance)
(on MDJ's ROM's not sure about the other ones..)
the video recording is pretty good in image way: WVGA (800x480), but the sound is [email protected]!
did some re-search, with VLC.
The audio.
codec: samr
samplespeed: 8000hz
bits per sample: 16 @ 128kb/s (windows says 13kb/s)
Tje video.
codec: mp4v
sample rate:15fps to 30fps (varies from light and dark environment)

afaik the current camera apps have real 5mp.
a foto taken by my cam shows a resolution of 2592*1944 thats ~5mp.
but the white-balance with led flash is really a problem
I've just taken some photos and when I saw it on the pc, it looked terrible. My SE W610i (2mpx) takes a lot better photos...
Photos
Yes there is no arguring. Android photos suck compared to those in WM! I have tried to take photos with wm and android at the same time...
I noticed some diference. Forcing widescreen photo's does'nt matchup with the widescreen photo's taken in windows mobile. But nonetheless, i dont care. I just want a working camera on Desire HD build!!!! And I can't find a clue how far the developing is
zoom
how do you zoom in with htc camera, never figured that out

yes indeed it says 5MP but when you put it on your pc you will see its not 5MP!

if is is a real 5MP please thel me what ROM u are using
I've actually noticed BETTER quality in Android than in WM. I made a post about it a while ago, but can't be arsed to find it now. The white balance is actually more realistic under Android.

I'd have to agree, all my android pics look so much clearer and detailed compared to the same objects/scenerys under winmo
I agree... photos taken with winmo always turnout better for me. But I can't complain ... atleast we can take photos with android. Most andrid ports for winmo phones can't use camera at all. We have a very good port for our hd2s.... but its still a port.
Alot of people seem to expect android to work as well as a native android phone. Amazingly our android port does function better than a native android phone with a stock rom in some cases.... but when you mod, root and put custom roms on a native android phone with similar specs, it definitely outperforms our ported android.

Merry Christmas everyone!
I'm using v1.72 WWE stock ROM but I'm considering venturing into the world of Android for the HD2 as there seems to be lots of development that is tempting me.
The camera is important to me so can anyone tell me what their impressions are of the quality and options on Android builds in comparison with stock ROMs? I find the stock ROM to provide usable results although in party environments the flash washes the images out and they are often blurry. V3.14 is better but as I wanted other people's opinions.
ON android the camera quality is not as good as WM, in the registry change the camera value to:762929 and you will have 720p quality photos.
BTW my flash works perfect on Wm As well.
MERRY CHRISTMAS.
720p on camera? W.U.T.A
Anyway...camera on wm makes better quality photos, especially in daylight

Ehi guys.
I've Noticed that with this camera, also if it has 5mpx is not so perfect..

Anyone know why?
Is maybe cause of android?

Because some manufacturers are using camera's that might be less powerful as camera's in other brands of phones. I can place any phone/smartphone that has a camera, next to my sony ericsson C905, and the C905 will always win. always...
I must say, that with a lot of Android builds, the pictures I take are just as good as with Windows Mobile 6.5.
It can show for some people, that it looks not as good, but we have to keep in mind, our device was not designed for Android, causing DEVs to edit or completely write new drivers for the camera's.
A lot of mine look great on the phone but when I upload to Facebook or Picassa they look like they have been taken through a window screen.

What I have noticed is that uploading will sometimes reduce image quality through compression to create a smaller file upload.
As for the op, yes there are some Android cameras that suck and some that take great pictures even sometimes equally what this phone takes natively in WM6.5. Like said drivers are created so results will vary and you can only hope for so much without getting a native Android 5mp phone.

Most gingerbread ROM's without sense have camera application working flawlessly and taking very nice pictures. In addition, you can install the MIUI camera .apk for full screen and fully optimized picture taking

Some builds have better camera than others because of their different camera libs. Miui rom has much better camera libs than the cyanogenmod 7 nightly does..
the camera in HD2 is perfect for me. i tried it in several roms by several softwares and just satisfied with it.
