Samsung Bigfoot.
T-Mo needs another good HTC handset with a keyboard. The Dream is becoming old school more by the minute. I want something suitable to replace it once my contract's up, and I don't feel like hopping to AT&T. Not to mention that bordering keys on phones is bad for non-visual key identification, the Dream's separated keys help improve key identification without looking.
Well the G1 is turing into the Iphone. So I dont think it will be old school dead, just hope they keep upgrading it in a GOOD way. Adding a flash to the camera and keyboard support would be a good start... focusing on its linux backend is another, allowing for USB input devices would give it the win. Basic elements. Puddy to give it form, Duct Tape to bind it together, Caffinee to make it go. =)

Based on the specs, it seems like a downgrade. 4 row keyboard vs 5 row, QVGA vs HVGA, fixed focus camera vs auto-focus..

Good to know. Heh Its been debated G1 beats G2, and if G1 beats the ATT one.. so far Im thinking wise investment so far.
I do wonder about that Samsung Android tho..
Samsung is going to be releasing the I7500 Galaxy with 8GB of internal memory and a 3.2 AMOLED 16M Color screen. 5MP autofocus camera with a flash.
Motorola will be releasing some phones as well. Nothing much about them yet.
I remember reading on TmoNews a while ago that there is supposed to be a G1 v.2 late this year, I beleive it is a physical redesign to help its' looks.
Basically has anyone noticed the G1 really was built to last? I havent anything that scream "OMG I GOTTA UPGRADE TO THIS MODEL!" yet. G1 so far has outlasted iphones launch.. I mean soon as they got it, they came out with a 3g model. Something we already have.
Only thing to make G1 perfect. Add flash camera, more internal memory and hell, why not a linux-swap partition built in. =p
We definitely don't want swap. Just more RAM.
The RAM is fine. I wish they rebuilt the browser with the Native Developement Kit. That would probably solve most of the problems. Getting more PoP RAM is just not possible because MICRON has to get their lard asses and do it.
But since ARM architecture isn't their prime investment it'll be a while before we see anything.
I heard a few IRC members were doing the initial looks at hardware hacking. I don't know all the details but if anything we could definetly add flash to the camera if the genius IRC guys figure it out.
You could easily add an external flash via the serial port. It would, however, be somewhat bulky. If you build it in, then you need to butcher it. Either way, it seems perfectly pointless... its not a camera, its a phone/pda.

Lancaster = Serious Fail. The chip it uses does not include the ATI 3D acceleration that all the other Android Phones have.
It's like AT&T purposly wants Android to fail instead of releasing a real device.
Maybe Hero.
Rogers Dream on AT&T 3G is great.
-James
The 256MB ROM / 192MB RAM of the G1 is inadequate.
If they bumped it up to at least the 512MB ROM / 288MB RAM of the Canadian Magic and the Hero, bumped the camera to 5MP w/ a flash, and added a slightly larger battery, the G1 would be good for another couple of years. Just about everything else can be addressed in software.

faster processor and larger internal memory would be good then we could run the hero roms more efficiently lol.
I would believe ATT and Apple BOTH want it to fail.. afterall that market is about iphones. So ever other GSM is countering iphone with a better android. And isnt he soooo cute. ^^
Okay i think the vibrant is an insane device!
It totally deserves a lot more attention then some useless fruit phone which you have to hold a certain way. Now t mobile is great for service 3g and good phones Too bad there advertising is horrible. Okay logically thinking.. Why would you make a mts 3g a flagship device. Comparing the mts 3g to the evo the droid x the i phone 4. Its just a crappy phone. Yet in many stores they don't even bother trying to put the slightest effort into advertising the vibrant. Seriously the mts 3g is crap compared to this amazing piece of technology. Hell half of the staff in my area didn't even know they could start selling them.
Don't get me wrong i just wish t mobile could advertise it like any other company.
Anyone agree at all with what im saying :O?
Tmobile has always been bad at advertising. I work for them and that has always been my #1 complaint. But they did push up the launch date of the phone. Give it a week or two and they should have some commercials.
I did see a Galaxy S commercial, though it wasn't strictly T-mobile.
Lol yep, its kinda like they have the ability to become #1 with there new 3g speeds and this amazing phone but there just like... nah to much work.
if i had not told my friends none of them would have ever known this was even out.
Yes it would have been nice to see some headlines "T-Mobile Vibrant sold out on launch day" like the Droid X had.
Lol not even that but just make it known ..
1 commercial would be fine

A week or 2 when everyone else has the device?!? If I were T-Mobile..I'd have someone rate the Galaxy S phone in comparison to iphone and EVO and obviously beat both...then put a Giant Sign outside each store saying "The ULTIMATE phone is here, rated better then the EVO and the iphone 4...come inside for a free Demo"
I mean doing that shouldn't have cost much >.>...but by the looks of it all they did was make an obvious ticker site that no one even knew about and released it like any other phone..
I have only seen the commercial air one time on this phone and like the op said, the sales people at the store didn't even know if the had any let alone sell them.
lol. i picked up my phone late this afternoon. the salesperson was surprised that i even asked for the phone since he said his mytouch slides are selling like hotcakes.

My girlfriend was saying the same thing to the tmo rep. We were the only two in the store for the entire time I was getting my vibrant. No accessories at that location, but they daid only a few people actually bought the phone today.

The Vibrant is getting the same treatment as the Slide -- let it become available for sale earlier than its anticipated launch date, then advertise it when the device "officially" launches.
Sure T-Mobile is going to make the Slide their flagship Android device, the Vibrant technically did not exist when the Slide was announced, and the Nexus One isn't available in retail locations.
When the Vibrant is officially launched on the 21st, then it will become T-Mobile's flagship phone.
Haha he tried to convince me that the slide was just as smooth and snappy as the vibrant lol

If they take till 21st to actually market it, that would already be semi late as AT&T will get theirs and maybe even sprint announce theirs....
But the vibrant should have faster if not as fast transitions between home screens..if this is not the case then it is an issue of Touchwiz vs Sense UI(if thats what I assume it is running..not sure) then the actual device...

The reason for the slow down is due to the way the phone allocates application data. Your phone has 512 MB NAND memory for the root file system, and the internal 16 GB SD card which is where the phone stores application data. The trick is to move the data to the NAND memory, which is apparently faster than the internal SD card. This momentarily solves the lag issue, but due to the limited space, it might prove to be a problem in the long run for those that installs a lot of apps.

I wonder if it is possible to take the M$ approach and have the active app loaded in RAM and other data in ROM...so moment you swap apps it puts that app in RAM and the one before it in ROM...unless of course the data is over say 6mb (assuming the ROM is equivalent to a class 6 card) where it would keep the data in ROM all the time :/
I'm still in the market for a new phone, and had my heart set on the Epic from the start. However, when I started delving deeper into the different phones, I started feeling apprehensive toward the Epic.
Why I want it:
Video/picture quality seems better than the other phones I was looking at
5row QWERTY
Non-smudgy back plate
Good stock SD card
Super AMOLED
Why I'm apprehensive toward it:
It's running 2.1 and people think Samsung is abandoning the phone
Ideally, I wanted a 4 or 4.3in display
To get 2.2 and faster speeds, I'd have to use a ROM -- I have no idea how to do it, and I also don't like the themes most of the community ROMs have.
The other phones I was interested in were the EVO 4g, the Nexus S, the Droid X, and maybe another Galaxy S phone.
So, my question to the Epic 4g community: How do you like the phone? Have you tried any of the other phones I've listed? Am I going to get shafted by Samsung and never get a 2.2 update, or is it just as easy to flash the leaked 2.2?
I lovemy epic. Greatest phone I've had. It does everything I want. I got the epic to future proof myself.
Itsvery easy to flash the leaked froyo. You don't even gotta be rooted! Also, theleaked froyo is bascally a release candidate, being almost complete but still lacking little things like bluetooth audio out.
If those are the phones on our short list, get the epic. When samsung finally releases official final froyo, those phones will have nothing on the epic.
If you can't wait for froyo, then a5least get a new dualcore phone so you can be sure you won't be left behind

Agreed. The epic is absolutely fantastic. Even on 2.1 it's vastly better than the evo, which my girlfriend has. The nexus s however looks great and if that was on sprint it'd be a toss up for me. Don't listen to all the nay saying going on right now. Samsung easily had the best camera, screens and processor combo available for the current gen. Once you go oled it'd be hard to go back. I just recently flashed the new trulyepic 1.2 rom and imo, that's the way to go right now if want froyo. Runs fantastic.

Well the first question I'd have for you is what carrier are you looking at? Because you just listed a bunch of phones in the OP that are on different carriers. As far as the Epic is concerned, I love it ... it has a LOT of issues, including Samsung's Froyo delay that you mentioned, but it's still one of the fastest phones out there (with a kick ass GPU mind you). Again, it depends on what you need. If you don't need QWERTY, then you might want to look at the Evo as that is one of the best supported phones on the market (in terms of the dev community).

The carrier isn't important to me. It relies solely on the phone -- although, I think Sprint has one of the cheapest plans.
If trade my epic for a nexus s any day... The screen on both if my epics became loose after weeks and I harshly use the keyboard anyway

I guess it really depends on what you are coming from. I was a die hard blackberry user.... *throws up a bit* came directly to and specifically waited for the epic after seeing several inferior android phones but knew it was where I wanted to settle once I was able to dig deeper helping a few friends mod.
Point being if it will be the first phone of this caliber, I think you will love the epic and there is no reason not to in most cases as the phone is blazing, couple it with some of the mods from the devs here.... it will be sweet. That being said, the same would likely apply to most of the other phones in your list.
Sent from my Twin Jets EPIC using XDA App
Only if you want a keyboard. I think that's all the Epic has over the Evo at this point. Yes it's faster, yes the screen is better, but.. Samsung support is terrible, while 2.1 runs fine and there are 2.2 leaks its still a sorry state to be in for a "flagship" phone.
IF you're interested in Roms.. go with an HTC. While the Evo is running a 98% functional CM7 and MIUI, and (Insert popular rom name here), the Epic's (while the developers are all awesome! This is NOT a knock) are more or less just customizations and ported applications with a breakthrough here and there such as EXT4.
Samsung is absolutely ridiculous "#neveragain". The keyboard skips letters, the GPS is moody and only works when it wants to, updates are pretty much MIA. Yes the epic is a little bit faster, with a more colorful screen, but at what cost.
Thanks to the Skippy keyboard I've become a professional on the onscreen keyboards and am highly considering a Evo off of Ebay while I can still sell the Epic for more. Maybe that gives you an idea of what it's like to own a Samsung.
</endrant> All rants aside... it's not a bad phone by any stretch of the imagination. Samsung is just better at products that don't need much support after release... like TV's...
The epic (galaxy s phone) has the best diplay and fastest GPU on the market as of posting this.

I have the opportunity to get a new phone for free and with NO contact upgrade, from work. I have the option of either a Vibrant (they only have a few in stock) or the SGS4G.
I realize the G2X (optimums 2) is about to land but it's not an option for me.
Pros
Vibrant- 16GB internal and an extensive dev community
SGS4G- 4G, Working GPS, 16GB sd card,
Cons
Vibrant- GPS
SGS4G- internal storage, slight shorter bat life, no a strong dev community yet.
I'd take the vibrant just because there is more development atm.

Galaxy S 4G. 4G, and 2.2.1 are reasons enough for me. "Development" is garbage to me as none of the roms in the dev section work consistently better than stock nor do they look better. The only thing I use is the Voodoo kernel for Voodoo sound.. the Voodoo EXT4 conversion doesn't even speed everything up.. the phone still freezes up when writing new apps and etc.
SGS4G. Winning!

Might as well get the 4G for the modem, but talk to them and see if they would let you get the Nexus S. Only thing is you have to go thru Best Buy but it is like getting a regular $199 two year upgrade. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Im waiting for the dual core handsets to hit tmo. I will prolly use a payment plan as my contract wont expire for a year or so. But if I had that choice I would get the 4g. ffc.faster data newer os. It essentially a Vibrant with a few more bells and whistles afaik. There will be development on it.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.

4g for non root. 3g for root. I seriously doubt development will ever pick up for that phone. Most devs are probably smart enough to upgrade instead of side step. Better to consider nexus s.

I currently have both the Vibrant & the GS4G on a family plan. I love the TW roms & the voodoo kernels for the Vibrant. However, to me this would be an easy decision. Def the GS4G. The phone is nearly as snappy as a voodoo-ed Vibrant. And I only say nearly cuz of some menu lag occasionally. GPS never acts weird like it does on the Vibrant. Yes, even with the latest GPS fix on the Vibrant. Battery life is incredible for an initial stock rom on the GS4G. Internal storage is no issue on GS4G. Just titanium your apps to the SD card. I could keep going but I would just get into opinions. Anyways, just my two cents for ya.

Hope you realize everything you just mentioned, minus GPS, is software based. Vibrants are currently running 2.2.1, benefiting from battery and speed. Considering the reasons you just gave, decision should be obvious to not get 4g.
Vibrant. I value the internal 16gb, and 3G is more than fast enough for mobile browsing.
I absolutely hated the 4g, and sent it back the minute my Vibrant replacement arrived.
And with Sweet honey, this thing walks all over the 4G.
And I really never noticed the speed difference with the 4g.
In fact, I found the lag to be aweful on the 4G.
I'm waiting for the Dualcore phones now.

This is a terribly inaccurate, uninformed, and unqualified comment. The 2.2 ROMs are solid and the 2.2.1 ROMs are lacking because everyone is focusing on 2.3. The same can't be said for the 4G.
The 4G will have to compete with phones that possess superior hardware at the same or a slightly higher price. It will have significantly smaller adoption compared to the Vibrant. At the time of the T959's release, it was too good to be true. Everyone and their mother jumped on board because it had the fastest internals of any phone and best general purpose screen of any Android device. You're going to see a much larger T959 community, without a doubt, and the custom ROMs have proven to be better and as, if not more stable than the stock releases.
Further, the 4G is not a simple addition, but a tradeoff. You lose 1900 3G, which means you have no chance of using 3G on AT&T. I do, and being an unlocked phone, I take advantage of AT&T's $10 data plan (requires $30 unlimited family messaging) and have used at least 3GB/month since September. If you're are stuck with Tmo, positively certain that you won't/can't switch, this may be unimportant. To new, it's not worth a negligible increase in speed. On AT&T in Atlanta, I get 400 KB/s typical and 300 KB/s during peak hours (3.2 and 2.4 mbps for those who think that's slow). How fast is Tmo's 4G going yo be? 500 KB/s? You might notice that kind of difference, I don't even notice the difference between 400 and 300 KB/s.
Video-calling doesn't look like it will become popular soon, perhaps via Skype, but that front-facing camera seems probably won't get that much use. You'll probably be on a new phone in 2 years anyway, and that's a VERY optimistic timeline. Vchatting probably will noy become popular on mobiles (I mean 1 mobile vchat/week) for several years. Regardless, you can scrap together $30 bucks and get your own FFC from a many sites. Very simple self-install.
Regarding GPS, mine works perfectly, but it took a lot of tinkering to get it that way. This may seen daunting, undoing a few screws and gently bending up a piece of metal, but I haven't had an issue since. My LbsTestMode settings are MS based (uses network to assist GPS initial locking), hot start (requires a 10 min position test or similar on cold start) and auto SUPL (automagically fixed!). The while process takes less than half an hour. If I weren't a student, I'd be getting minimum wage and $4 isn't a huge time cost to get GPS that should have been working to begin with.
Another possible contention may be the chip yields on the 4G. This is a completely valid concern if you plan on overclocking/undervolting, otherwise, it's completely irrelevant. Samsung's fabrication process is likely VERY mature at this point, but it's hard to say whether or not the current T959s would be from the same batch as the 4Gs (they probably are). It also needs to be determined that the difference in yield would translate to poorer overclocks/undervolts. Actually, I presented a lot of good reasons this point is probably irrelevant.
Having read all that, it's up to you. Is 300KB/s (2.4 mbps) appreciably slower than Tmo's 4G implementation (i read that it's ~500KB/s, same latency)? Do you vchat on the go and without your laptop? Can you live with 12GB fewer internal memory? Took squeamish/lazy to fix your GPS? Are you absolutely sure that you will stay on Tmo? Most importantly, are you willing to give up a huge dev community for a nearly nonexistent one? Say 'yes' to more than a few of these and you'll probably be happier with the 4G.

With the Vibrant performing better.
I can only contribute this to the onboard memory.
hope u all enjoy this read.
im going to post my experiences and thoughts with both phones.
not hating on either one, just a clear cut opinion.
I personally first came to android after the Evo came out, i was lucky to get one July 27th. I had the G1 for a couple weeks on Tmo (a long time ago) and i was not impressed.
before that i was a blackberry guy for the longest.
I switched from Tmo to sprint because tmos service went to crap. i drive for a living and i do about 200 miles a day. Tmos service would drop during the drive in the same exact spots where i knew i would lose service. 7 different places to be exact with crappy reception in between.
i figured id try sprint. anyways i stuck with them with a awesome phone the Evo 4g.
The Dev area for the evo is un-real, roms galore, kernel galore, everything is flashable and seems to be very easy to do.
A plus for the evo for sure.
With the right rom/kernel combo along with the seido 3500 battery, it was a incredible phone. Doing anything i needed it to when i needed it. Never having to worry about battery life.
i had no issues with the evo, but i did have to return it due to it overheating and shutting off until cooled (kernel issue and something i did im sure), i got it replaced and was happy as a clam.
As for samsung, i critized them and hated on them every chance i got.
the support for them always seemed to be crap and doing things on them seemed to be not as easy.
well some things happened id rather not discuss and i had to get rid of the evo, i found a Epic on craigslist(may 1st) and it was listed as a "galaxy pro" The guy didnt know what it was, but the pics showed it was a epic. i verified the ESN was clean and picked it up for $65.00!!
Couldn't pass that up at all, besides all that i needed another android, for a couple weeks i was using a beat up blackberry curve 8530 and seemed to be having withdraws lol.
Anyways i fell in love with the sammy as soon as i started playing with it. The screen is just poppy and incredible. it blows the evo screen away easy.
im not fond of slide out keyboards, but i figured with the screen being 4 inchs, id have no issue with adjusting from the evo and its 4.3 inch.
Touchwiz isnt all that bad either, i thought it would be worse, but its not bad at all. Can become adjusted to TWiz or Sense very quickly.
it fits well in my hand, but im too interested in the power button on the side, seems out of place. Really im used to the button up top along with the charger port on the bottom instead of the top, but love the little "door" on the charger port.
Dev area for the Epic is smaller, and a little more "intermediate" then the simple flash and go of the evo.
i miss the evo dev section, but have become used to the epic area and getting the hang of things quickly.
To be honest.
both phones are great, id be happy with either or. With the evo its all in the dev section, with the epic its all in the screen.
i wont be slamming samsung anymore because im just as happy as i was with the evo. i may go back to HTC for the ease of things after the evo 3d or something else comes out.
but im very comfortable with the epic and its a great choice in the android world right along side the evo.
the screen really is amazing. i like the camera better too. sometimes i wish i had a snapdragon phone just for roms, but this whole nexus S thing could change everything. sounds like a fair review to me. just flashed the ACS rom and its pretty damn good. will deffinitly tide me over till GB
I picked up an evo on launch day, broke it and jumped ship to the epic when it launched. While the evo had a better dev community imo, I still enjoy my epic. The screen is really what takes the cake. I could care less about the keyboard so next time I'm in the market for a phone I'm gonna sit back, observe the dev communtiy for a while when the new flagships launch and see what happens. I do love my epic but when it comes down to it, its all about development which I feel the epic lacks compared to the evo. The devs here are amazing, I just feel that things are much slower around here than the evo section. Still though this is a great phone. I've been running the ACS rom for a few days and its flawless. Not to mention I was able to get a day and a halfs worth of battery on it

I really like Touchwiz, I avoid roms that don't support it.
I first got my epic over the Evo because I knew the battery life was going to be much better. I'm not sure if it's really any different or not, I haven't used an Evo many times other than at work (I work with phones). I think the epic is better because of the AMOLED screen. Plain and simple, everything just looks better.

You know i forgot to say anything about the camera itself.
we all know the evo and HTC make ****ty camera drivers , constant complaint even though its a 8mp on the evo.
samsung on the other hand knows what they are doing in this regard.

i completely agree, same thing i was basically saying.
im running syndicate fully loaded myself.
having crappy battery but im trying to address all that as of right now.
My wife has an evo and I have the epic so I do have the luxury of flashing both. Yes the evo development section s is bigger buy there are so many roms they all copy each other. I like the roms hear as they all offer something unique. I also love the Amoled screen and the camera. The epic is faster in both cpu and gpu. They are both awesome phones I just prefer the epic. It is if u like to flash stuff to have an evo though. I can flash all day lol

This is what I like to see..a lot of people never give things a fair chance and go off baseless rumors....
For example:
1) Samsung does not support their phones:
This was kind samsungs fault as they promised an 2.0 update to the Behold and then never delivered..said it wasn't possible and only updated to 1.6...from then on everyone made the assumption that Samsung would NEVER update their phones...other manufacturers havent updated their phones either on plenty of occasions..sure its Samsungs fault for not delivering but you can't base everything on 1 occasion...Also a lot of people group "support" and "updating"...Samsung is know for its good support actually..
2) Touchwiz is the devil that lags up the phone and brings nothing
While all UIs add bloat..TouchWiz is not as bad as people make it out to be..most hate TouchWiz received was in the winmo days...and the old Touchwiz was junk..plus the new TouchWiz looks similar to the iphone in the app launcher thus mustering more hate...I wont say TouchWiz is the best UI..but its one of the cleanest UIs I've seen..
I find it Ironic how an HTC device has like 5 issues and people just go oh well..while if samsung has 1 issue people scream how Samsung sucks and they shouldnt have bought it...my only request is that people look at all manufacturers equally without bias and judge based on the overall product fairly..
So its not about who is better HTC or Samsung..its about who is it acceptable to buy from...and at this moment both HTC and Samsung are my options for buying...this gives me more choice...in the future I hope to add LG and maybe Motorola to my "acceptable" list if they meet my standards..and the more manufacturers that meet my standards the more "CHOICE" I have...I expect by the SGS 2 becoming mainstream the community will rival HTC devices in development..
What I really liked about the evo is that EVERYTHING Is flashable.
From radio updates,to pri, to anything you can think of.
You just download it and flash it, so simple.
Kernel support its also great.
thats what I miss most.
Not saying that the epic devs are bad, im loving avs.
But the evo area is def more popular.

can you reiterate? we can flash anything on the Epic as well...
But obviously they have a larger dev base due to:
1) Evo coming out first
2) People choosing HTC just because its HTC
3) Sprint spent their entire budget advertising the EVO while spent nothing to advertise the Epic until it won the pcworld #1 phone award..then they spent a little..
4) Nexus One giving a lot of grounds
5) Devs more used to how HTC does things
Well Odin has to be used for radios and stuff.
We cant simply flash a rom without checking what file system it is, things like that.
They are non existent on the evo.
Along with the whole rfs/ext system thing we don't need to worry about on the evo.

Everything is flashable on the Epic, too - see Odin.

If you use cwm on the evo its basically the same as our epics, edify=cwm3 amend=cwm2. The bonus for the evo is amon RA which can go both ways. Just try flashing gb with cwm2 and well your in trouble.

i mean non Odin wise,
like on the go type stuff.
i dont know how many times ive downloaded different kernels or dif lock screens, radios or pri's on the go and could just go into recovery and flash.
no pc required.
thats what i meant.

Your joking right? I have only used odin once to flash the ec05 modem and I've flashed most of the eb13/ec05 roms, kernels, themes, ect. Actually I've flashed all eb13/ec05 kernels and have been on cm7 a1&a4. I avoid odin at all costs, but its always there just in case I goof. So far so good.
Ya. The epics screen is amazing. Im not buying no other device unless its amoled.

The Epic is my first Android phone and I picked it over the Evo for two main reasons.
1) Physical keyboard
I thought I needed a physical keyboard and it turns out I do and I don't. For email/sms Swype works great. However for things like working in the terminal the virtual keyboard just doesn't work for me.
2) The screen.
Don't have to say much here
Overall I've been very happy w/ my Epic. Still need to test out Syndicate but for now rooted w/ the screen rotation lag fix is good enough.
