My phone was eng hboot'd, S-OFF'd and Perm Rooted via Visionary.
Now I want to return the phone to HTC.
But i was advised to do the following which i did:
1) gfree -f to do true S-OFF
2) flash stock rom
3) Do Temp Root via rage method
4) gfree -s ON to do S-ON
But my problem is but I feel I still got Perm Root, because after restarting the phone, Root is still there. The only difference now compare to before is SuperUser prompts me everytime I want to access Root - but if I Temp Rooted and I restarted phone, I shouldn't even be prompted at all??
I want to remove all traces that I modified anything on my phone before returning to HTC
Please advise
If you flashed a totally stock ROM and then did just temp root with rage, it's impossible for you to have perm root (i.e. still can get root after a reboot).
Either you flashed a pre-rooted ROM, or you did more than the temp root with rage and you perm rooted instead.
Either way you can remove the Superuser app and delete the su binary from /system/bin (you will need to be root to do this).
Do u think when I Perm Rooted via Visionary, that just carried over even after i flashed a clean stock ROM?

It shouldn't have done, but I suppose it's not totally impossible ? I don't know how you flashed the ROM, and if it was from hboot, whether that does a wipe or not first.

I have seen a lot of people saying they are losing root access if they update SU Binary. I am to assume everyone who has lost their root access did it via some sort of one-click root app. These will only give temporary root access and will break root at the slightest kick in the teeth.
Anyway, I have updated my SU binary, and I still have my root access, I gained root via [GUIDE] How to Root Sprint 2.1 Release for CDMA Hero and I'm S-off. Hope this helps clear up any issues with SU.

I rooted same as you. When I updated binary and was on aosp 0.1.2, I did loose ability to use su like in terminal.
I was able to flash a different recovery with adb so I think it didn't wipe root but something with GB and the super user app didn't work together with the new binary.
I successfully updated binary in froyo. Were you using GB when you updated, and if so, which version?

I was running aospGBmod 0.1.4, updated, then went into root explorer (worked), TE (worked), and TB (worked). I also deleted the old SU that came with the ROM, D/L'd the one from market, then updated. I'll try it again with 0.1.2 and test it out. Also, are you S-off or S-on?

I am S-on.
I just attempted it again using 0.1.4, but I have the same results. Nothing is able to get root rights.
I should've nandroided before trying that. I know better.

Reboot recovery and go back to your last nand, then reboot into whatever rom you were running. Uninstall SU, reinstall from the market, you should be fine then. But I would make a nandroid just to be safe
I attempted to uninstall and reinstall, but it didn't help.
Now that I have updated to 0.1.5, I can upgrade the binary and everything is working as it should.

I am on 2.3.3 and just updated SU Binary. Haven't noticed a problem yet. All previously installed root apps still work, newly installed root apps work as well.
disregard. I am retarded and didn't read what forum this was in.
My phone's still rooted, I used the same method as you.
hi guys! i have a question, what are the difference of soft root and full root in wildfire or in android os? thanks!

soft root allows you to have superuser privileges for a temporary time (till you reboot) allowing you to use apps such as titanium backup, etc. Full root lets you have a custom recovery and install custom roms, etc. Also, your phone will remain with superuser privileges without having to reroot after reboot until and unless u flash an RUU.
I'm looking to root my phone but I don't want to flash any new bootloader or custom roms. I'm under the impression that I'll still be able to get OTA updates if I do this. My question is if I download and install an OTA update will I still have root on the phone or will it remove root? Thanks!

I was still able to receive and apply the OTA after rooting, but the OTA did cause me to lose root. But re-rooting was pretty painless.
Its sure than rooting phone you receive OTA and can install it?? If yes, I want to root my phone, only root, i dont want to change anything more for receiving OTAs.
How can I do? just only root, any link to the safest way?
Is the same way when I receive an OTA and i have to root again?
many thanks.
1. You can use an app called OTA Rootkeeper. Use it to hide root before you accept an OTA, then use it to restore root after.
2. Yes, you can use adb commands (possibly the Nexus 4 toolkit as well) to temporarily flash clockwork recovery and obtain root. You will need to unlock the bootloader though, and that will factory reset your device.

Good advice for OTA Rootkeeper! If I head down this path I'll make sure to use that. I'm still looking around for the best way to root without unlocking the bootloader or factory reseting.
Superuser contains a built in 'try and preserve root' function which worked well when I updated to 4.2.1
I've been rooted and running Sacs ROM for a while now, but somehow I've lost root access. When I try Supersu it tells me "There is not SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it..."
I have been trying different ROMS and restored from a nandroid backup using TWRP. What do I need to do to get back root access?
Can you not just reroot with CF Auto Root?
Yes, I can, but I wasn't sure if that was advisable or not given that I had root access before and somehow lost it. In any event, I re-rooted using CF auto root and all is well. What I don't understand is how I lost root access in the first place.

No telling why you lost it. Did you take an update?
I know I updated to NC6, lost root, but re-rooting was not an issue.
I rooted my Oneplus 5 using the "Engineering Mode" exploit that was discovered a few weeks ago. I want to unroot my device since I have to download the full OTA on every update. How do I disable ADB root?
Wouldn't flashing the stock ROM remove root access?
Can't the steps be done in reverse order to enable root again?
I don't know much about this root method, but, from my knowledge, Engineer Mode is an apk. Wouldn't completely wiping the phone and flashing the stock ROM return it to a stock state (without root)?
