International Wifi Calling test - Vibrant General

Has anyone actually tested out the wifi calling hack by actually going to another country and using it? I am curious because in "airplane mode" the wifi calling app says it will not connect in that mode. I read on the t-mobile site that you should disable data roaming before trying to connect via wifi but that leaves me with a really uneasy feeling. I mean what if it fails? How would you know until you got back to the US and had a ridiculous bill! Your voice antenna remains on? Why does it need that?

WiFi calling isn't free.. It is just for people with poor signal.
It still uses your minutes

I realize that. But let me rephrase: I would like to be able to use my minutes in another country utilizing wifi but avoiding international roaming charges. Has anyone tested this to see if it is possible?

I've used it in France and Germany and it worked fine. There were no surprise charges on my bill.

Thanks for your reply! Just out of curiosity, were you able to accept incoming calls ok?

I had incoming calls hard-forwarded directly to voicemail. On T-Mobile, if you're roaming internationally and your phone rings, you'll get charged for one minute even if you let it go to voicemail. I didn't feel like unforwarding every time I got on wifi, so I just left it as is.
I don't see any reason why it wouldn't have worked though. I've done it with my BlackBerry on UMA internationally and incoming worked fine.

Wifi calling

Anyone try out wifi calling/messaging yet? I just sent an mms and the "G" appeared even though the cell signal is off and it's supposed to be through wifi. It took longer than when I'm on 3G too...
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
i think the mms goes through a diff system when get home ill try it
I believe MMS always goes through cellular data.
This is to prevent an exploit of sending free messages over Wi-fi

Something came up for crackberry users that stopped them from using UMA and since WIFI calling hits the same servers as UMA, i.e... they are the same thing, I suspect that your issue might be the same as what they were having. Your ISP's DNS is blocking the service. If you can change your DNS settings to OpenDNS.com and give it another try. This may not fix your issue, but I know it did for a whole lot of crackberry users.

I get the same error message. Just got off the phone with a tmo rep and she said that there's a signal outage(?) around Atlanta and that's why I can't get ANY cellular connection whatsoever. But I remain skeptical, as my friends on TMO are having no problems and the "outage" just so happened to affect me right after the OTA was installed. My fingers are crossed that everything gets fixed though.
Mines works fine, it depends on what kind of network your on. On my campus it would not work, but when I got to my gf apt it worked perfectly. So check the wifi settings that you haveto make sure there isn't a firewall or something else set up.

Mine works on my college campus great. I have terrible coverage here. This may be a stupid question but, it only uses minutes when I'm actually calling someone right? Not however long it is enabled? I'm only asking because I'm tired of getting screwed over in ways that I logically shouldn't be.
Yea it only uses minutes when you are calling. Also I don't know what college you go but I go to umiami, so our networks are really strict with regard to using them for gaming or any kind of tethering. So I'm guessing they haven't allowed us access to do that here. But on any other networks like a home network it works perfect.

I go to Westfield State in MA. I had to get my phone registered on the resnet net work to use the wifi. Can you use wifi at all at school with your phone?

Crap. I just sorted out my issues with things draining the battery and now Wifi calling is running rampant. It stays running in the foreground even when it is turned off and logcat shows that it is constantly active even when the phone is asleep. Is anyone else seeing anything like this?
well i would like to know why its wifi calling if tmobile still use the mins from your plan thats like stealling it helps tmo they use less data but still charge us for it
Yea genius on their part...even still its not like they're not doing anything. It its still being runs through their network just not through their towers.

yea, what he said. Cellular towers are like a gateway to the Tmobile internet. The still pay for all the fiber and backhaul that gets your calls and data where ever it is that you want them to go.
i just updated and i opened up wifi calling and configured it. i dont understand how its wifi calling when it still uses our minutes? whats the point of having it then? what benefit is there to having this app?
Yea we can but we are literally forced to just web browse lol

T-mobile has had the "charging for minutes via wifi" policy now for YEARS going back to the first Blackberrys that supported UMA. Minutes were deducted unless a customer paid for the @home service per month. You can complain all you want, but if you consider the other carriers and their options---T-Mobile does NOT charge for HSPA+ (4G) access while other carriers do, and some charge even if there isn't 4G in that city just based on the phone! Wifi calling can also prevent you from incurring roaming charges by allowing you to make calls from almost anywhere you can get wifi access a feature that other providers just don't have. T-Mobile gives more minutes for less money, offers more data download than other carriers, and offers some truly awesome features that others just can't compare to.
Although WiFi calling uses up our plans minutes, if we have unlimted weekend minutes, use it on the weekends, is it free or does it take away from the anytime minutes?

can you call via wifi?
but wth do you want to call via wifi?
it costs money too. and extra connection.
why will you use wifi when you can call 24/7 with your sim all day ?

wifi calling costs many though?
i read on that app it just costs as much as cellulair data.
so why in earth will people use wifi calling? they can just call without wifi. its called a PLAN
I get invalid sim as well I am on vodafone and not |T-Mobile..
Maybe you could change it to work on Vodafone?
i have tmobile, maybe thats why? might have to do with the APN or something
yay this is good but the thing I see is that if you are calling it may be going to the t-mobile servers ofc if thats the case only t-mobile sims may be able to get unless we edit the apk or spoof our sim but then also im guessing the wifi calling costs so not sure how this would work xD nice though
totally non sense. how can someone call using wifi or whatever internet source you may have to any cellular or telephone number untill you don't have some service provider etc... if this wifi calling is working over the internet, what application is it using?
seems totally fake or irrelavent
This apps works because i put the phone in airplain mode and use wifi only.
If you guys having problem then maybe it your phone. But, my phone is working, be glad that you have wifi calling.
This an oct 22,2008 phone not even the iphone 3g has this feature.

quite right, you think we can get a workaround?
I dont know im going to buy a new phone because i miss adobe flash content so much. I know this is out of topic but i miss my original droid before it got messed up.
G1 is nice when it was a backup phone in 2010. My main phone in 2008/2009 most of the time, until i sold my cliq. But, now i just want a phone with higher specs.
I try playing gameloft games HD/3D games that isnt working because of processor we have.
This developer now a days is coding their apps to make it work with 3.5 inches and beyond, with higher frame,Power vr ship specs.
I love my g1, but im going to buy either g2 or hd 7.
I think i speak for everyone having an phone for to long loses it power in long run.
And, wifi calling on this app only work with T-mobile sim card and wifi of course.
There is a wifi app.
it was ripped off the G2 and ported to the vibrant, so it is possible.
however its not that good.
it was taken out of most roms on the vibrant because of its buggyness/uslessness.
it drains battery pretty bad even when not running.
it uses minutes even when calling through wifi (the only purpose of the app is to get clear signal in places where there is none for tmobile customers and not to save on minutes)
Its just kinda buggy overall.
hopefully they'll release a cleaner app in the future, but for now its pointless if you get decent signal at home.
Honestly, this apps work fine to me. Im just disappointed that the developer now a days isnt supporting older device by coding the apps to higher specs phone.
Wanted to get an android phone with wifi calling capability for a friend who is currently in Iraq. My budget will not allow me to a buy a g2/mt4g, and a g1 seems like the cheapest option so this is where I began looking. So if I added an extra line on my family plan, grabbed a g1, rooted and installed this app would my friend be able to make calls as long as he has a wifi connection? Can anyone confirm this works without any access to the tmobile network?

I'm not sure about on the g1, but on other phones it works, but it still uses t-mobile minutes.
so you can be away from the t-mobile network, but you still need to have a t-mobile plan and minutes.
its basicaly for those who have horrible signal at home, but do have a wifi connection.

International Use

Hi. I tried searching the forum and didn't see anything. Has anyone traveled with their phone out of the US? Does it work internationally? Can I just use the wifi setting and still use my phone while traveling?
Thanks!

With wifi, google voice, sipdroid, and goggle voice callback... There is a forum post explaining how to set it up.. Basically turns your phone into a wifi phone... Not sure if you will be charged for goggle voice outside america using the setup though.

apart from the voip/wifi option outlined earlier, vzw apparently has international cdma roaming agreements for voice in over 40 countries... Mostly americas, asia and pac rim but not in europe. I've used a vzw phone in mexico from time to time, but cdma networks are still relatively rare outside the usa (but there's more out there than I thought).

My fascinate went to montreal with me last year and worked fine. Had to get my data plan switched to an international one (i think it was about $65 instead of 30), but the rep I talked to said there was nothing they could do for voice or text. So, I had to pay per minute and text while I was there. Luckily it was travel for work, so they covered the extra expense while I was there
Google voice was still free in canada (it should still be I think?), so I used my laptop a lot to make calls in the evenings.

I don't have enough posts to enable links, but here is Verizon's website that shows CDMA roaming rates for voice and text:
b2b.vzw.com/international/Roaming/rates_coverage.html
Copy and paste the link directly into your address bar. Do not add www to the beginning.
Here is the link for roaming data rates:

thanks all. I didn't want to pay for the international plan since I'm only gone for 2.5 weeks. I'm hoping to use google voice over wifi and whatever else I can get working. I'm not sure how skype works over wifi, but I'm under the assumption that as long as I'm on wifi and not over the network, it shouldn't cost me anything, correct?

A similar question was asked on the Skype forums, and here was the answer supplied by one of the staff:
Your fascinate is using Skype Mobile for Verizon and your iPhone is using Skype for iOS. Skype Mobile uses cell minutes to connect calls and can not be used to place calls to US landlines or cell phones as this will be charged by verizon.
If you fascinate has Android 2.2 you could put Skype for Android on this and it would work almost the same way as the iPhone except it cant use 3G

Phone no longer ringing when the network is 4G LTE

Using the phones on Sprint.
Since three weeks or so, while on LTE, the incoming voice calls are going directly to voice mail.
Sprint looked at it and changed the Network to 3G and now getting a ring for the incoming calls.
Basically, I am forced to run the phones on 3G service.
Need to go to a service center (which is very far for me) to have the phone looked at.
Anyone facing similar issue?
PS: 2 of the 3 PH-1 phones I have, are having the issue.

Google have updated the dialer recently several times, could it be a bug that shows on Sprint, or do you have spam settings on, which I know has caught other people out. Check/play with spam settings in her dialer app.
(other areas I might check (if not dialer or network). I assume all phones were working before correctly, right? Are they different sims or the same sim in different phones? New sims, ie not old one you have cut down hat are old spec. Do lte settings match on different phones?)

Same issue. Did you get it fixed?
I also have this problem on Sprint.
Sometimes restarting the phone fixes the issue, sometimes it doesn't.
Between this and no longer being able to use Google Voice without using a separate number, I think it's time for me to bail on Sprint.
My wife had this issue a bit back. Only happened when the phone was using VoLTE (verified by a debug menu, *#*#4636#*#*, showing both voice/text and data marked as LTE).
Fix was to disable the Enhanced 4G LTE communications option, which forced the phone too fallback to nonVoLTE while still using LTE for data. Again confirmed using the phone information menu which showed voice as 1xRTT and data as LTE.
Hope this help and that we can get a better fix soon.

Didn't work for me either but I figured it out... what I had to do is change a setting under Google Voice in Settings under the tab CALLS change to "Use carrier only" and I did have to turn VoLTE off. I left the Preferred network type as LTE. Phone is working well now, with T-mobile and Google Voice I have been testing it all morning.

Any fix for no data while in a call??

I realized while in a call the mobile data is gone which might be normal perhaps because it can only handle one thing through the modem......
I'm not sure, but just wanted to know if its not normal then anyone found a fix?
Thanks
Depends on the carrier, which carrier do you have?

Sounds like you changed settings to LTE only to force VoLTE without carrier support. That would be the behavior to expect under such circumstances. Not saying you did btw.

Thanks but no, I'm not forcing lte as there's no Volte here.
If there was then the problem wouldn't exist as those calls would go through mobile data and in that case the data wouldn't be cut.
Again, from what I've read around it really has to do with modem not being able to support 2 things at the same time like call (regular) + mobile data.
I just wanted to confirm more people are having this and that this behavior is kind of expected and not a glitch. As generally I have WiFi on I had never realised this until yesterday that I had WiFi off and was on a very long call and realised I couldn't access the Web at all.

In my experience (not with this device) if there is lte link when placing a call, the data would fallback on 3g network. If no lte, there will be no data at all

And you're right, it does depend on carrier, however OP never told us. Lol. My brother has US Cellular and there is no data while on voice calls. That's just how their network is.
