HTC warrenty. Should I do it? - Nexus One General

Hey!
The camera on my Nexus One has stopped working, and its clearly a hardware error.
The thing is; I live in Norway. I bought this phone in the states, since its not available in Norway.
So I contacted the HTC support in Norway, and they transfeered me to HTC UK. After talking to the guy, I will recieve an adress, where I have to send the phone, at my expense. Once they recieve it, they will send me a bill for the return cost. After that is payed, they will fix and send back my phone.
Is it worth it? How do I know that they will cover it from the warrenty, and how long will this take?
Any input, is appreciated
EDIT: The HBOOT thing is unlocked.

Is it worth it depends in the cost of the shipping. They tell you shortly after they receive it whether it's covered or not, they're pretty quick.

Shipping the phone to them is about 30 GBP. and the HBOOT is unlocked :/

Sorry to hijack the thread but do they charge out the arse for having parts fixed? I'm weighing up fixing my power button myself or sending it to them. (Previously opened so I doubt i'll get it fixed under warranty).

unlocked or not.. i had my nexus one power button broken. sent it to them unlocked and rooted and they sent me replacement. I had no problems from htc at all. the only thing i had to pay for was the camera, it was cracked by me, they charged me $60.00 us.

I think I will send it in. Worst case, I will lose £60, and get the phone back with a non working camera. (Ofcourse, that is if it doesnt get lost in the mail)
Should I go back to stock room, or do anything else before i send it in? And should I use the original box the phone came with?

My N1 had random restart/overheating issues and I sent it in with clockworkmod clearly installed, though I did install stock + factory reset before I sent it. I had no issues with the process and didn't have to pay a dime.
whether it's worthwhile is up to you, at worst they will charge you 200 USD to replace the main board but I doubt that will happen.

They were very reasonable when I cracked my screen. $55 including shipping is all it cost me.

Just called HTC again, because they got the wrong contact information on me. This time they told me that they will pick up the phone from my home, instead of me paying for the shipment. Very impressed so far

I live in Austria - and my powerbutton was not working so i called the support and they told me that the repair is free as it is warranty and i only have to pay the mail to the UK - not the return.

In my case: I send the phone to UK on 18.November - they received it on 22.Nov, and until now its not returned! (but they told me that a wrong ticket on their side was the problem)... ;-)

My Phone was also unlocked...

I live in Sweden, my speaker was loos. I mailed HTC and got the ticket, paid for a recommended "bubble" envelope at the post office. Costed me 130 SEK(10 USD). Putted the phone without the battery, sim-card,SD-card and back case and the ticket around it. 10 days later i`ve got the phone back. New speaker and they even changed the receiver on it.
The phone was used when i`ve bought it so i got it without a recit and i`v got a Cyanogenmod on the phone. HTC putted the original rom back and locked it.
No questions asked.

I also had a good experience with HTC UK. My N1's power button stopped working and I had to sent it to UK because I bought it from USA instead of waiting for N1 launch in Spain with Vodafone.
It took 2 weeks: 3 days travelling to UK, 4 working days in HTC Repairing Center and 4 days travelling back to Spain (there were huge snows on it's way, it should have been faster because they sent it back with UPS -probably 2 days-).

Anyone from Europe sent the N1 for repairs?

Hey guys.
I've previously posted here that my N1 has some rebooting issues. It turns out its a hardware issue and i would like to send it for repairs.
I have contacted HTC using the support phone number but it turns out the number is not allocated. After sending 2 emails to them i haven't received any reply.
The phone was bought from the US and shipped to a person in UK which than sent it to me in Romania. I have the bill and everything since the package was never opened.
Has anyone from Europe managed to send it for repairs to US and if yes, how?

You should be able to send the phone to HTC UK instead, bit closer.
I've sent mine there and it was easy, but then I am UK based.

hey bevan, what was the problem on your nexus?
i just sent mine to the UK because of dust under the left corner.
when i bought it, it was perfect, no clicking sound, no dust. fast forward 2 months, I decided to unlock the bootloader since everything was good.
10 days after that.. clicking sound and lots of dust.
im bricking it waiting for HTC to come back to me now.
I've talked to HTC this morning. They don't want to help. They say i should call an US number which will result in an enormous bill. So that's it. I'm stuck with it. This is my last HTC phone. I'm changing it. I'm very pissed off. Its not the first time HTC's customer service is this bad.
the screen was not flush. sunk in a little on the right handside.

Can you not get it back to the person in the UK who shipped it to you? I'm sure they'd have no trouble sorting it.

call the UK number instead.
I had no problem getting mine accepted from Ireland.
I saw a guy on another forum, that got his nexus succesfully repaired even though he lives in Denmark, i dont remember if he got it from the UK or the US, but he called HTC Denmark, they then called HTC UK and they fixed a adress he should send it to in the UK, and they repaired it for him.
So try to contact your local HTC, that might help.

You should be able to send to UK repair or send it to the person that shipped to you and get it repaired. I live in UK & sent mine in for repair( Charging Problem), it got it back 5 days of receipt.
The USA HTC Service department and HTC Europe all pointed me to a phone number in the US. I told them i can't call because of the international call rates and they told me there's nothing they can do. I'm stuck.
They told me to ask a friend in the States to call for me. I don't have such a friend. Oh well, the phone is usable for now, but its sucks when it reboots when you need it the most.

I tried contacting my local HTC Office/Service and the number does not exist.
On htc's support page the number for Romania is incorrect. I got so pissed off when i noticed that. But i cooled down by now.

HTC Customer Service: HELP!!

Hallo everyone, I couldn't find any new threads so I'm starting a new one. I took my HD2 to a Milan service center because there was a slight crack in the LCD screen; the phone fell from my hands, it was in its case but cracked anyway..I accepted a hefty 201 Euro charge, and was told that I would get it back (fixed..) in 7/10 days. This was on My 18th. After 2 weeks I called and was told to call HTC directly, there were no news. HTC told me there was a shortage in LCD screens, the problem was being solved and to call back in another 2 weeks. I called yesterday (HTC Europe..) and I was told the problem is indefinite, they have no idea when it will be solved. I asked why wasn't I told right away, I could have kept my phone (it was working) until they had fixed the shortage...and so
today HTC called me back and proposed to return me the HTC2 NOT fixed, that I should ask the service center that I did not want to fix it, and I would "only" be charged for the delivery service to and from the HTC service.
At this I blew up, and said in NO WAY was i going to ask to have it back not fixed so it would look like I did NOT want it fixed...just so they could charge me for it! I still need a fixed phone! So I just told him to keep it there until they had solved the hardware problem, and I would have a consumers' association write to them...
..I'm thinking of buying a new phone, maybe this new Samsung Galaxy...
..but I'm SO ANGRY!!! NO MORE HTC!!!! Does anyone know what is going on? I've never heard of anything like this!!!
Sorry for your bad experience. Quite a few people here will be familiar this kind of thing. I once tried to make a warranty claim on my HTC Touch Pro...in the end I gave up.
Check how much the 'postage' charge is before you agree to anything. This and the handling fee is normally quite high (well, in the UK it is). Keep complaining about it and don't back down?

I'm going to have a lawyer write to them, and a Consumers' Association. They can keep it until it's fixed. And they HAVE to fix it sooner or later or start paying penalties. The doc I signed says I have to pick it up within 90 days or I will be charged for deposit...
What I am going to do, is go out and buy another phone...and NEVER AGAIN an HTC...
I'm not sure if any of the other phone manufacturers are any better unfortunately. Either way, good luck with your new phone, and good luck getting your phone fixed by HTC.

I would never claim in a warranty for just this reason. Smash it pay the £20 for excess on the insurance get them to pick it up and take it away and get a replacement at the door.
I've done this two or three times with my mobile insurer, works a charm. I'd pay the £20 excess again and again just for the privilege of getting them to take it away and getting a replacement there and then.

Hi Kalavere, that's pretty funny! But unfortunately I don't have insurance. I didn't even have that option, it wasn't a telecom device, but I bought it unlocked from a regular store. I going for the Samsung Galaxy...and when they decide to send it back to me, it's being sold. Goodbye forever HTC..
(though I know that Samsung Customer Service will be just as bad...).
Can totally empathise with your situation. Sent my HTC Desire for repair (external speaker stopped working) in UK 6 weeks ago. Sent it in original retail packaging with battery.
Only just received a replacement today. It arrived in bubble wrap in a plastic envelope...no retail box, no battery and lost proof of purchase.
Have had several shouting matches with their p!$$ poor customer services deparment. Have emailed UKs BBC Watchdog TV programme for help in getting some sort of compensation. Will let you know if I get any joy.
In the meantime, I would recommend anyone else in the UK who has problems with HTC Customer Service to also email BBC Watchdog....the more that email, the more something might get done.

Warranty Test - UK Vodafone - Unlocked Bootloader

Well the USB port on my Nexus is dead. Have wiped, reflashed, taken sim and memory out, tried charging from wall, from car, and from computer and nothing. It doesn't mount on the mac.
So I was pretty resigned to losing it. But I need a phone, so took it to Vodafone store, who have sent it off for repair.
Thing is I forgot to flash the stock ROM back onto it, so they are getting a rooted MIUI ROM, with unlocked Bootloader.
I suspect I am going to get a call in the next few days saying they can't do anything with it.

Not necessarily. If the engineer investigates the internals of the device and can see the MicroUSB port is dead then it really shouldn't matter what ROM you're running. However having it repaired by Vodafone is a completely different matter than HTC, just wait and see!
As a Vodafone customer with an unlocked Bootloader myself, i'm interested in seeing how this turns out!

I wouldn't worry to much, mines been sent to htc twice with no issues. First time I received it back with a locked boot loader and the 2nd time they replaced the hardware leaving the custom rom. Doubt vodafone would even notice

Can't you send it directly to HTC? I'm also in the uk, but bought my phone directly from Google. I think I have a 2 year warranty.

VOdafone just rang, to say that they've diagnosed that the USB port is not working (which is awfully clever, asI had told them that).
They then said they are now sending it on to HTC! So not sure what the point of sending it to them was.
Still, no-one mentioned it was rooted or bootloader unlocked.
+1 for interest.

Lol, i wonder how long it took them to work it out, especially after being told what the problem was.
So it seems that Vodafone either don't care about the mods or just don't check in the first place. Either way they are sending returned devices off to HTC for repair and many people say that HTC have honoured warranties regardless of custom ROMs etc. Sounds like you'll get a good result.
EDIT: There is one reason that i can see for sending to Vodafone rather than direct to HTC and that is the postage cost. Vodafone will send a prepaid Special Delivery pouch, or in some cases a courier if it's a device swap. Unless i'm wrong you would have to stump up the postage cost yourself if you are sending to HTC.

and postage is paid for by HTC, they send you a prepaid UPS label which you print and stick on. Instructions I got in my e-mail

2. Please also backup any important information you want to keep before shipping your phone. We are not responsible for the preservation of data or for returning storage cards. Any personal data on the phone or microSD card will be lost.
3. To prevent any possible shipping damage securely cushion and package the items in the box so they are not loose. We suggest using nondescript packaging if available.
4. If you have chosen to receive a prepaid mailing label, it will be sent by FedEx to your email address within 24 hours. The prepaid mailing label will expire 8 calendar days after receipt. Please print and affix it to the outside of the box. Yeah, so they had to replace the digitizer and wasn't covered under warranty (well because i dropped it lol) cost me a crazy £105 ! oh well, the service and delivery was efficient got it all done within 5 days.
I am informed that it will be back at the shop tomorrow so I will soon find out what happened. i can at least assume seeing as they haven't said otherwise, it's been fixed, and free of charge as they wouldn't repair it before informing me of the cost.
I suspect it will come back with a front facing camera Gingerbread, or even Ice-Cream, and some sort of light sabre capabilities.......

Failing that it will be nice if it just works again and you can't beat free for a price

You can root without unlocking it, that's what I did. Should I have any problems I'll just stick a stock ROM and recovery on there and it'll be as stock as the day I got it
Well I got it back, flashed with 2.2.1 and it's now S-on (is that a locked bootloader?)

Now I've got to go and relearn how to unlock/root it!
They're meant to be S-ON, unlocking the bootloader doesn't change that.

[Q] Dead DZ and HTC Repair in the UK

This afternoon my DZ decided to die. I checked the phone and then 10 minutes later went to ring my wife and... nothing, phone wouldn't respond to the power button. I whipped out the battery and left it out for 2 minutes but still nothing.
I have since tried plugging in the charger and again nothing, not even the orange charging light. Tried leaving the battery out for 1/2 hour and removing the memory and sim cards and even plugging in the charger with the cards and battery removed, but still nothing.
looks like it's serious.
I have had the phone 11 months, I got it from a little shop (well booth really) that was branded as HTC in the local Westfield shopping centre. The little shop has now disappeared. The phone is sim unlocked and not tied to a carrier. When I dug out the receipt it is in the name of a company called Westcoast Mobile. They have a website (www.westcoast.co.uk) but they seem to be a rather diverse company but not one that sells phones to the public.
Consequently I was planning on calling HTC on Monday to see if I can get the phone sent off for repair. Does anyone know if I'm likely to have problems with HTC or will they be happy to help me?
In the mean time I have dug out my trusty HTC Typhoon which is currently synching my email and charging up. Old phone but it does the job and I love the size and shape of it.
HTC warranty is one yr. Should be ok. I bought mine used so I always fixed mine myself. But you bought yours new.

My suggestion is this:
Try buying a new battery , maybe it will fix the problem
Also if the phone will be recovered , take care of this with buying a new silicon case or something like this. Today my DZ cashed by up to 2M and nothing problem , sceen perfect i got luck.
Also i add if you realy love the phone , and the repair cost is to much , buy one used on ebay like me. I have bought one for 220€ @ 170£ , with 23months of guaranty and it's perfect.

I'm wondering whether they had some sort of tie in with HTC as the booth was completely branded as HTC anad they were selling sim free phones on any network.
I got a phone from them because:
1. They had the DZ and I could have for free by renewing my contract with O2.
2. The sales bloke could string a sentence together unlike the fool in the O2 shop.

I'm a Brit too and I had a pretty similar issue just a few months back. The bizarre part is I wasn't even doing anything "risky".
Get in touch with HTC ASAP. They were really good to me.
I contacted them via their website (you'll need the serial number/IMEI). Very polite and helpful responses and offered courier pickup for mainland UK addresses.
Didn't take long at all for a repair, and I believe it was back with me in 2-3 days.
I can't speak for their phone support, other than that they called me to check if the phone was still working okay and asked if they could close the ticket. An unexpected touch, but appreciated.
Motorola barely lifted a finger for me when dealing with my MS2 issues... but that is another story.
Since you have the receipt, you should be fine. Again, just get in touch!
I warn you, it will most likely come back with gingerbread like mine did, but you can still downgrade and root (if you so choose) using the guides on here.

Thanks for that, it gives me a bit more confidence. It's just annoying the phone was in my pocket in a sleeve for 15 minutes and it just died.
Well I rang them on Monday morning, at first they wanted to send me a new battery but I pointed out it didn't do anything without the battery when you plugged the charger in. The bloke had to check with his supervisor then came back and said "let's arrange to pick the phone up". I had to email them a copy of the receipt from when I bought the phone and that was that.
They emailed me a form and a label, I boxed up the phone and a courier picked it up Tuesday afternoon. Pretty straightforward really.
Just waiting to hear that they have the phone now.
Got the phone back this morning, so exactly 7 days from calling HTC to having a working phone again. I think that is pretty good service.
Seems like the problem was pretty terminal as the phone has returned with a new IMEI and according to the paperwork with the phone it has had the "PCBA" and "flash board" replaced.
The phone even came in a little box with "I'm back" printed on it.
Sounds great ! Was that all free, under warranty ?

All free, didn't cost me a penny.
The bloke I spoke to at HTC told me I had a two year warranty after he had spoken with his supervisor.
Is that two years from the purchese date or the repair date (as in did they extend the warrenty for you)
It will be 2 years from the purchase date. The paperwork with the phone when it comes back says something along the lines of you don't get any extra warranty after the repair date.

FYI..recent RMA repair service experience

I unlocked the bootloader and had a custom ROM installed.
My headphone jack only played sound out of 1 ear.
Seems like they have received my device at no cost and it says its in state of repair. It's been 5 days and they are still repairing..it's only a headphone jack that needs re inserting...
I'll update but still waiting.

Well... From my experience they will send you a quotation for repairs (new mainboard+case+headphone jack(probably)). Check your spam folder 'cause it's possible that this quotation is somewhere there and they've to wait for you to accept it.
If you won't accept their quotation, they will send you broken tablet back, but you will have to pay for expertise. I recommend reading Terms of Use.
Why the mainboard you ask? Well, I had to RMA about month ago and got my tablet back a week ago. They say that if bootloader is unlocked they just HAVE TO exchange it for the new one and YOU have to pay for it. That's the rules. Or so they say.
At least, that's what they're doing in my country.

Been like 10 days since they have had my tablet. I haven't had any contact which the RMA status says.
Checked my mail box.
Been on chat support and they keep saying the next day or later today but nothing.
If they want me to pay for a new motherboard then they can go EFF themselves. It is a **** tablet, its a quad core cpu and the stock is laggy as ****. I shouldn't have to hack it to death to make it somewhat usable. Rather put it towards a gaming laptop.
how much did new mobo cost you? do you have breakdown of your total?

I had a problem with the bootloader, it doesn't boot anymore. So I sent my 16 Gb tablet, and after 6 weeks, I recived a refurbished 32 Gb model, so no complaints. It's working very well indeed.

I have been on Asus chat every day. People on there can barely speak English.
They have had my tablet for about 2 weeks and not been contacted about it.
I've been told for the 2nd time it will be set as high priority and that it's taking time because it's gone to head office :-S
'They are reviewing it and will be contacting the servicing center.' My tablet still at the center, just my case gone to Head Office.

I had to send mine in four times to get the screen fixed. The fourth RMA, I went on Facebook and told my story about their sorry service. Then I filled out a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. The next day I got a message on FB from a manager that said to send it California so he could look at it and he would send me a new one. And he did send me a new one.
Mine was unlocked and was running blue ROM, and just stopped powering on. I talked to them, sent it in, they wiped it clean, reinstalled jelly bean, and sent it back working fine. No issues at all.

Good experience
I was running unlocked bootloader with CWM10.1 and had issues with rebooting during video playback. Filled in the RMA request, delivery guys picked it up from my door and returned it to me a week later with locked bootloader and stock JB installed and the reboot issue fixed. No charge whatsoever.
Pretty fast considering I live in Finland and it wen't to Czech Republic for RMA service.
Not so good with warranty...
Well you guys are lucky. I sent in my tablet because the tablet did not always recognize the dock and the mousepad did not work anymore. So i thought it would be an easy fix, probably the dock connector. Now i have recieved an billing for a new motherboard, no warranty because i have unlocked the device.
This is now the case in the Netherlands, seems like asus has a different ways of working in each country
So day 15, they are telling me they sent be a payment email a couple days ago. I haven't received it. I asked to send me it again but it's something the people on chat can't do and it seems resending an email takes forever.
Dammit, someone finally tells me. ''I'm seeing that the warranty was voided as the bootloader was unlocked"
I'm waiting for this billing email now. I can get a refurbished one for 245 dollars.
I'm gonna pawn this tablet, stupid Asus.

Seeing as I don't live in USA, I'm visiting here. I am going to get my tablet back unrepaired, then go home to the UK and send it off again and see if they will oversee the locked bootloader!
In my case the new motherboard costs €175... Getting it back unrepaired will cost money as well, so think it over well before deciding too quickly

Yeah **** that, I bought mine with a dock on black friday for 240 quid. I can get a refurbished one in USA for 240 dollars.
So they received my tablet may 30th.
Got email with bill June 20th.

To replace the headphone jack cos sound only was coming out of 1 ear. Unlocked bootloader so I have to pay.

That's bullcrap. They shouldn't have charged you because the headphone jack is hardware. What a crock!

sadly thats normal. my a700 and tf300t had to be repaired. both were custom rom'd.
i had to pay for both repairs since during boot the unlocked bootloader was visible. (both had screen issues with ghost touches)
best way imho to get warranty is to make sure the bloody thing is not booting anymore whatsoever so they can't check the bootloader.

Agreed.
Here's the funny thing though. I know several people who've had hardware failure and have had the bootloader unlocked. Asus fixed their tablets and didn't charge them a thing.
LOL... how can a headphone jack have been affected by unlocking the BL?? I don't blame him. I'd be 1 pissed off dude. Makes no sense why they fix one and not the other when it comes to hardware.
