A soft reset is just power cycling the phone. Are you taking about a factory reset?
Usually you have to go to settings, privacy, and then select factory reset from there. You will lose any apps not backed up, numbers should be fine because they sync to gmail, media will be on your SD card

A soft reset is pulling the battery with the phone powered up. You won't (or shouldn't) loose anything.

Thank you for your advise I will try it and see what happen.

My understanding from reading on these forums, its safer (and accomplishes the same) to power the phone off, then pull the battery. Or turn off fast boot and turn off/on the phone. The problem with fast boot on, is that powering off the phone is not a try power off, but just a deeper sleep mode. A "real" reboot is needed for some changes to take effect.

just pull the battery lol

From my understanding a soft reset is power cycling the phone. IE power off->power on (or with cyanogenmod selecting reset when holding the power button). A hard reset is a battery pull.
At least that's how it was back in my Blackberry days before my G1.

No, a hard reset is a factory reset. Like reinstalling the stock rom etc...

Boot back to windows?

I'm not sure about how these elements work, but I wonder if there is or could be a boot loader to bring an android boot back to windows without a complete reset? Every now and the I have to dip back into windows for a little something and it would be handy to have a 'Windows Haret'.

The only way I know of is in the app dev tools which is in most the roms..click that click bad behavior click crash the system server...

It is advised that you turn-off phone completely, take battery out and place it back in, and then boot into WinMo... Reason, your battery capacity will VANISH in matter of minutes (yup, yup minutes) if you do not take battery out and reset values of the readings...
What in the world I've never ever taken my battery out for a reboot. I abuse the ****zu out of my phone and I can still pull many hours out of one charge.

Ditto here, typically power off wait a few, then power on...I only remove the battery because it is easier than pushing the reset button when needed.
I was just wondering if there was a way to get back to Windows without having to go to a power-on reboot.
No there isn't

I have been using Android on HD2 for over a week. Never take battery out. Just Power off/on when in Android and want to get back to WM. Would really appreciate a way to reboot without Power Off/On to get from Android to HD2.
Very easy to get from HD2 to Android. Why not in reverse?
Why is it easier to remove the battery than pushing reset button when needed? I put a hole where the reset button is so I don't have to remove back/battery cover if I ever freeze up.
Except for drilling a hole in my phone, I'm with you!

Why not drill? It provides immediate access without removing cover. LOL

Thanks for the info. However, if it just kills the phone at the press of a button, you still have to go and Power On again instead of auto poser off - power on. I must be too lazy. LOL

If stuck read this

I see a lot of people getting stuck when modifying their evo 4g.
Although as a last resort you can pull your take your phone
apart (carrying case, battery cover, remove battery and replace battery)
and then re-power up, but I have found that when you press
power button (first) + then volume down + volume up (quickly)
for one second or less, will get me out of most situations without the need to remove anything.
There is one more thing I discovered when attempted to reboot my phone one day,
when you press
volume up + volume down + power button
for more than 5 seconds or so, the phone will vibrate and the green led light will blink like as if you have a message. After a removing the battery to get it out of this state and powering up the device, I find that HTC startup will re-initialize.
Hope this helps someone.
So is this like a reset function without pulling the battery? I do notice the evo has no reset button like some other phones (tp2 comes to mind).
Next time I have a hard lockup, i'll give this a try. I dread pulling the battery door as it tends to loosen with too many pulls.
interesting... did that wipe your data?

It did not wipe any data, just seemed to re-initialize HTC sense. This may be useful when you are having issues with unknown programs running, its seems to stop all non-system programs from running the next time you power up.

Epic Won't Turn ON

I know they are a lot of Topics about this, I have tried everything (I think), here is my problem.
The Epic is stuck at the Battery Charging Icon. It will not Power On, It will not go to Download Mode, and it will not go to Recovery.
What are my other options, since the phone is not following commands, is not rooted and is not activated?
Thanks guys

If you have the battery out it should not react that way. With the battery out hold the 1 key on the keyboard and plug into a USB port and press the power button while still holding the 1 key.
It shows me the battery icon and then goes away, shows again then goes away...

Only power and the 1 key on the keyboard will get you into download mode. Sounds like you will have to take into the Sprint store to diagnose at this point. If you can't get into download mode, you are screwed. You can try leaving the battery out for a couple of hours.

Where did you get it? Sounds like you got a bad phone. Return it. It is still under Samsung warranty so you can send it to them.
Have you tried another battery and see if the phone boots?
That will be my next step. Tomorrow at work I will change battery with a friend to se what happens thanks

This is due to the thin wiring harness being damaged that connects the keyboard to the Motherboard.. It can be replaced at your local Sprint repair store.

This happen when I bricked my phone. Unplugged my phone and took the battery out for about a day and then afterward pressed the power button about 30 times and I got lucky and my phone went into download mode after I pressed 1 and the power button. The key is discharging your phone's memory and reflashing your phone with stock rom. I had to reflash my phone a lot of times before my flash stuck.

Ok. it turns on that is good. Now turn off the phone hold down the power button and the 1 key on the keyboard. This should get you to download mode. Pressing the power button is useful to get your phone to powerup and now that it is powered up you can now flash the stock rom on your phone thru odin. Reflashing stock rom is the key to fixing your phone.
But the power buttom is not working, I already give it a hard reset and the phone was not rooted, you think that is gonna fix the buttom? I thought it was an hardware issue.. what do you thing?

Guys...I have a quick question...well maybe 2...
(1) so my phone is having the same problem. Working one minute, then not the next and I can't get the phone to boot up at all. Is there any other way I could get it to boot...through USB to the PC, anything?
(2) So I got it into download mode, and it completed. Did that download everything from the phone to my pc? If so, where is that data and how will I get it back to my new phone?
Sorry for the stupid questions, but I haven't dove into things like this with the Samsung yet. Thanks!!!

Remove Battery, Reset Button

Hi all,
I have had this bothering be even in the days when I used WinMob 6.5. Anything I have change battery, I will have carry out soft reset from the reset button behind before it powers on.
Can any assist in solving this problem for me?
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
I'm sorry, but I was not able to understand your question.
Are you asking what the soft reset button is for?

Can't press Power button (hardware)

Hey
My power button seems to have failed on me. I press it but nothing happens and I leave the phone alone and it press itself. Something inside must have failed
Can I fix this myself? Not sure if I have a warranty on this phone anymore (never unscrewed but rooted and has CM running on it)
Hm can't say much. Did you drop it? Could there be dust and pocket lint in there preventing button movement?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Open your battery cover, does it say VOID?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Seems like delayed response. Not a dead power button. Check how much ram is left on ur phone.
Sent from my Desire Z via XDA App
Strange, I just had this happen to me the other day! It ended up being dust/lint...
hopefully that's all it is for you as well!
My power button is also acting up. When I hold it down while the phone is on nothing happens. When I pull the battery and put it back in it turns itself on. It is rooted running the Andromadus Alpha v5, previously running ILWT CM7 where it was doing the same thing but I didn't figure it out before flashing the ICS ROM. What would happen if I took it to a T-mobile store?
Happening exactly the same, button doesn't react completely and if i remove battery start up automatically. But i drowned the phone before so probably thats why...
Happened to me. I ended up just remapping my trackpad button to the power button.
How you did it?

I'd love to know that as well
My power button broke a little while ago so I just sent it in for a replacement. I unrooted first to be safe.

The symptoms sound to me like the power button is stuck down, either the plastic button itself or the actual switch contacts underneath it.
Seems like it has auto fixed itself...........for now.
I edited the curcial-oj.ko file or whatever. Changed the key binding to POWER instead of trackpad click.
You can use adb to pull/push the file from /system/usr/keylayout. Reboot after pushing
keep in mind this only affects the android os, so you still need to be able to turn on your phone without using the power button (can't use tp to power on phone)
