I want apps2sd but cant figure out how to work it, my phone frequently runs out of space and i was wondering if some kind person could help me partion my sd card. I already screwd it up and deleted every damn thing on my sd... songs, priceless pics anofcourse ALL of my apps.
Well, for one thing. There is no way of which I am aware that you can partition sd without a full wipe.
First thing you should do is a nandroid +ext backup of your phone. Then copy the nandroid folder th your pc. (Should be located on root of sd.)
Afterwards simply go to partition. From there it's pretty simple. The standard 32 meg swap is fine. I like to make the ext 1 gig, however (personal preference). After all that goes through, you have the option of converting the ext2 to ext3. Then to 4 (unadvisable atm as alot of kernels don't support it yet).
Afterwards, install your ROM of choice with a2sd included.
Feel free to chime in if I've left anything out.

What does converting the ext do?
It just converts it to a newer filesystem. They have slightly improved performance and file management.

that's hard to answer, it really depends on what you're running on it. While each step up provides a bit more performance, it have a slightly greater chance of being incompatible with a program. I run ext3, btw. If you're curious, ask the developer of the rom you want to run and I'm sure they'll tell you whether to run ext2 ext3 or ext4.
i looked around the forums a bit but the search returns too many results not related to what i'm looking for...
So not really sure what this sd-ext is. I've read that it's for apps that are moved to the SD card... But the thing is i'm running CM7 and i've moved apps using Apps2SD as well as directly from within GB itself without ever creating an SD-ext partition.
So whats the purpose of this? Should i create the partition? And does it make a soft link to a directory on my SD card since it seems /sd-ext is in the root folder. If so, if i change my SD card later and transfer all the files over to it, will it break the link?
Your SD card has a fat32 format, which is mostly typical for usb storage devices, computers, etc.
Android runs natively in an ext format environment.
The stock Apps2SD uses the fat32 portion of your SD card, which has limitations, because it isn't Androids native environment. If you format your card so you have an ext partition, you can trick the phone into thinking it's part of it's native environment...
A good example can be seen with widgets, which won't work if you move them to SD, but will work on an ext partition. Other uses include being able to move cache and dalvik...

Thanks for the explanation. What happens to all the apps already moved to my sd card now? How do I get them over to sd ext partition?
And right now I only hasn't an eight gb card which I plan to upgrade in the future. Will I be okay just transferring everything over to the new card at that time?

Once you have an a2ext script, then you just move your apps to internal, since the phone thinks the ext is internal memory.

I must admit, I wouldn't think you would need to?
The mt4g has more rom and ram than my Nexus, so I wouldn't have thought that you would run out of space quickly... Or am I wrong, and space is an issue?

I am trying to salvage my internal memory on my Aria with S2E. I am able to select the "Download cache" checkbox, but "Applications", "Private apps", and "Dalvik cache" are all greyed out (can't select them).
I am really only worried about moving Dalvik to my SD card, but have no idea why it is greyed out.
When I load S2E, I get the following message "S2E has been granted superuser permissions", so I think it isn't a permissions issue.
Any thoughts?
Do you gave the latest version of s2e? Because the latest update fixed that for me. Also make sure you have a big enough ext3 partion. I'm running a 200mb ext3 partion and have tons of space now. I even have dalvik on the partion to.

Ah...that must be it...I haven't set up my ext3 partition. I am going to do that via ROM manager now.
I don't think rom manger will do that correctly. I used gparted live CD. Google about it. It was pretty simple.

That is most likely the cause. This same thing happened to me when I attempted to use s2e with ext4 which isnt supported.

Rom Manager will definitely work. I originally used Rom Manager to partition my ext3 partition. But it has a size limitiation (512MB?). Anything bigger than that will require gparted (or another partition manager via ubuntu)
how long ago did you use ROM manager to make an ext3 partition? I was just partitioning my SD card a couple days ago for s2e and ROM manager didn't give any options for what ext type to make. just asked for partition size, swap size and automatically set up an ext2 partition.

Im not sure how long ago I used it. The very first time I used Rom Manager to parition it gave me an ext2 parition. But the most recent time I used it, it just automatically set up a ext3 partition.
Thanks to the collective. I used Gparted, to make a 1024MB Ext3 partition, and S2E works like a charm now.
I tried to do an Ext4 partition first, but it was pointed out that isn't supported by S2E...that clue saved me a ton of time, as did the Gparted Live CD tip.
My phone is back to where it was, and I went from having 25MB free internally, to over 150MB...I have needed this for a LONG TIME!

For those of you using S2E, have you noticed whether moving apps and/or dalvik cache to the SD card slows the phone down at all? Just wondering.
My phone can reboot under 2 minutes being that I moved cache and dalvik to partition. Its a snappy little aria.

I use a kingston Class 6 8gig card with apps and dalvik on sd using s2e, ext 3 with 512Mb (Used Rom Manager). First time boot after flashing always take a little longer. other than that every other boot after that is just like normal, have not noticed any ill performance issues. Been using for more than a month now.
I see no differences in performance.

I have both apps and dalvik moved to SD with s2e and there is no noticeable difference in performance. Im running a cheap SanDisk 8gb class4 card.

Moving apps to the sd-card does slow the phone down if you use class 2 card which is generally bundled by the device manufacturer. For use with S2E a class 4 sd-card is required minimum. The ones who have higher class sd cards like 8 or 10, you should move apps. You should see a performance jump.
For normal sdcard users (2 or 4), I will not recommend moving applications and private apps, just move dalvik cache and download cache. should give you enough internal space without hampering on performance.
For partitioning the sd card use mini tool and partition it on the PC (see attached image). make sure you make a fat32 1st, 2nd ext2 & 3rd Linux swap. Thats the only way it works. Also dont forget to select 'Mount as Ext4' in S2E Settings. Best of luck.

I used s2e script to free some space on my desire ( CM7 ) , but i'm having some problems. I'm using a new HP 16GB class 10 sd card (write speed 11.2 , reading speed 30.9). First I moved everything in my 2gb ext3 , but I was having force close issues for many apps and I was unable to move apps to the fat32 partition thrugh app2sd app (not enought space). So I moved /data back to /data and these 2 problems were resolved. But I'm facing a new problem now. When I'm having a call and I take the phone away from my ear, most of the times the screen doesnt turn on until the other person hangs up (even if i press the power button). How can I resolve this? Also can I move /data back to ext3 , without having the problems I mentioned before?

Could be a lot of reasons. Highly possible that there are too many active apps leaving very little RAM. Have you checked how much RAM is being used?
I use a nifty widget called 'Go TaskManager Widget'. http://bit.ly/wRV7xI ... use it if you are using GO Launcher.

i just downloaded an app and my free ram is like 31% , when the phone its idle. Is that not enough? What can I do to resolve this issue? Will creating a swap partition in my sd make any difference?

Don't move your /data partition to sd-ext. Move Dalvik cache first, and if you need more space, then move your applications as well. If you still need more space, then you're doing something wrong.

so there is no way tomove /data with a hi speed sd card witout problems right? What about the second problem i'm facing now , with everything but /data moved to ext ?

CWM 5.0.2.3, as made available in these forums by attn1, also works for partitioning SD cards. I never got gparted to work right with my card, for some reason. But the "Partition SD Card" option in CWM did it right nice.
My Aria's not telling me that it's out of memory anymore. And that's good news.
Hey guys - i just bought an awsome SDCard, a 32GB class 10. just put it in ma HD2 trying to partition it in recovery mode - but after partitioning, the phone (through titanium backup) the phone only sees the fat32 partition and not the sd-ext partition. now i'v tried using PC Software to partition and the tutorials all over but that doesnt help either.
what am i missing? i need help

Did you partition in CWM with 1024M and 0 swap ?
simple idea/rule of thumb; class 10 cards are **** and you don't notice an increase in file transfer due to the limitations of the phone itself
Install ubuntu on your windows pc using the wubi installer (google is your friend here), it's very simple to do. Once you have ubuntu linux installed, go into the software center and search for 'partition manager' or 'partition editor'. Then install it. It should be listed in system tools as GParted. Plug in your sd card thru a card reader or a digital camera or another phone, and unmount it in gparted. Then create a new ext4 (probably 1 gb/1024mb) all the way to the right side of the space shown for the card in GParted. Then when finished click apply changes near the bottom of the GParted window. Done
Your phone won't show you that it sees the ext partition, that's all done behind the scenes. The only way to know is to install apps, and watch the system memory in settings/storage. If your memory goes down significantly as you install apps, something has gone wrong. If it only goes down a little (maybe 1-2 mb) after installing a bunch of apps, then all is well and working properly.

@ Malybru - no, my partition is 2048MB Ext - 256MB swap.
@huggs - that is strange because before i had an 8GB class 4 memory card - i had created a 1024MB partition and when i ran titanium backup - you could see the sd-ext partition below SDCard and Internal Storage
additionally, with the new cardz during every data wipe it skips the SD-ext saying that it cant find it - which never happened with the old card so thats why i believe that there isnt one
Weird. I've used quite a few different roms and have never seen the ext partition in storage settings. Wish I could tho.

its not that you could see it in storage settings.. but you could see it in titanium backup and you can mount it in recovery mode

ok, i've realised that im not the only person who his having problems with A2SD on anything larger than 16GB.. i want to know if there is anyone who has successfully partitioned a 32GB Card with an ext3 partition.. I spent alot of money on this card and its really messed up that i cant use it!!

When I try to use S2E to move the apps back to NAND from sd-ext, it shows up in NAND in the first couple of boots, but later on goes back to sd-ext without S2E doing the job. I kinda figured that it's built into the ROM to move the apps to sd-ext.
What would be the safest way to move the apps from sd-ext back to /data/app, and then repartition my SD card into a single partition and use its whole storage capacity?

try link2sd in the market,it's free,but once you've moved all u want to,boot into recovery and wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik,that MIGHT do the trick
one question, how do you want to partition your sd? i mean one fat or one ext partition? But seriously, one partition is a bad idea, i wouldnt recommend that.

Partition ur sd card in recovery with 1gb and swap size 64mb,THEN,open link2sd and when u 1st open it,it checks your phone and sd card then prompts u were u want to send apps to,ext 2,3,4 or FAT 32,select FAT 32 as its what u want,then a error msg will appear,reboot,then open link2sd and now you've got your fat 32 lol

Won't that have moved his apps to a fat32 partition?
If I'm reading this correctly what the OP wants is to move his apps to NAND so he can format his sd card to its full capacity in FAT32, presumably so he can use it as a normal SD card (eg for a camera, moving files etc)
I personally use a very popular app called DarkTremors Apps2SD GUI, it comes preinstalled on a lot of custom ROMS. This app checks where your apps are when you launch it, and gives you the option to either move them to SD-EXT or back again. Launch APPS2SDGUI, let it check your system, then click 'Apps are on SD!' to move them back to NAND.
P.S. I don't think you can wipe the SD-EXT partition off the SD card using Windows' built-in formatter. There are lots of freeware apps that can and will do this though, google is your friend =]

@Ty5982, unfortunately it didn't work. It went badly and I lost the apps in sd-ext so I ended up restoring them..

well i would recommend tu have 2 partitions, ext and fat. Just to be safe or prapared in case your want to try a different rom. Nowadayes almost every rom uses ext partition. And you won't run out of space, if you install some more apps.

I see. Thanks! Currently I have a 512MB EXT partition on my SD card. I thought I'd be able to choose which apps to move there but it seems my ROM automatically symlinks the apps installed to the EXT partition.
So I decided I want to just install the apps to NAND since I don't really install a lot of apps and I'm using a TMOUS HD2, just for an extra boost in performance compared to when apps are installed to SD-EXT. Then I'll just selectively move apps to SD.

Hi, I hope you guys are still around, I´ve been looking for an answer and can´t find anything, heres the question I posted on another thread:
I´ve been having trouble with my phone freezing even after full wipes, so I´ve come to the conclusion my sdcard is corrupt.
So I want to go through the Gparted process to format and re-partition my sdcard.
Currently I have 16GB class 6, which has the recommended FAT32 and 1GB ext4.
Is it safe (or even possible) to format the sd card now. I tried with Gparted and only the FAT32 partition showed up???
The rom is runnymede aio which requires the ext4

be sure to format both partitions as primary.
