Messed up. Can't find a resolution. - Fascinate General

Hey all,
I have flashed DJ05, rooted, and installed the Voodoo5 lagfix kernel/JT's super clean ROM via ROM Manager.
This morning, I attempted to install extra fonts using ROM Manager and the device fell into a reboot cycle. I attempted to boot CWM to restore the last backup I made and after that several force close warnings would pop up and the phone would reset itself. (This is where my inexperience and lack of research comes in).
Using Odin, I tried to reflash back to stock DJ05 to start over. Not realizing that I should have removed the lag fix and reflash a different kernel before reflashing using Odin.
Now the device is in a continuous reset loop and won't boot any software at all. I have attempted to reflash CWM and at least get that to boot but nothing.
How bad is my device messed up? Is there any salvaging anything at this point? Is there a way to restore the MBR without CWM and get it to boot correctly? Command line? Anything?

Find a full di01 or dj05 odin flash and use that in odin. It will completely format and reload everything short of touching your sd card. This should in theory get you back to stock. In fact search the forum for "odin restore files to get you back to stock"
SCH-I500 - DL09/Deodexed/JT1134 12.30/Darkstar

I tried reflashing using the stock DJ05 files and it still is in the reset loop. It shows the SAMSUNG screen, then the screen where it shows the /data and /cache partitions being formatted, then resets again.
Could there be something wrong with the /boot partition? Is there a way to restore that partition?

I know it seems redundant but try it with the di01 odin from adrynalyn
SCH-I500 - DL09/Deodexed/JT1134 12.30/Darkstar

Also make sure you use the PIT while flashing the stock images - that will ensure that voodoo is completely removed in the process.

I did that to my first Fascinate and I was never able to fix it, despite several, and I mean several reflashes and methods. Brought it to Verizon and they gave me a replacement. Sorry to be the bringer of bad news

If flashing DI01 stock doesn't work by itself, doing a Master Clear and flashing DI01 again might work. If you still can't get your phone to launch, it's probably time to go with ringleader's solution.

Adrenalyne's DI01 reflash worked! Thanks for the help!

Welcome brother should be able to flash the dj05 odin over that now and be good to go again.

FOTA wipe failed! *boot loop* help!

I tried to flash Voodoo 5 but it didn't work so I tried to flash back to stock but now all I get is a boot loop that says:
--Wiping Data...
Formatting FOTA...
FOTA Wipe Failed.
Formatting Data...
Formatting Cache...
Formatting DBDATA...
wipe_data failed.
How do I fix this?? HELP! I've tried everything!
Did you flash dj05 via odin first?

Voodoo 5 is only for dj05.

Go to android central, samsung fascinate roms and hacks,
Look up "force close loop of hell" and see if that may work for you. I believe it contains a stock image to reflash via odin.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I bet it was voodoo4.
Flash this in odin.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2056318/test3package.tar
Then reflash DI01.
I can't get into CWM let alone recovery at this point. I tried the Force Close Loop of Hell and still no luck. It just constantly tries to wipe and fails.
Then you obviously skipped over most if not all of what I said. Thats part of what landed you in this mess.
Also, I hope your signature is wrong...
wow, that's helpful.
Any other advice? I've googled this high and low and no one else seems to have had this kind of problem.
about my sig: different phone, my vibrant is a piece of cake to mod, unlike this jacked up Fascinate.
*sigh*
Sorry, Im a prick. I meant to flash it in Odin. I figured you weren't listening to me. I humbly apologize.
I've been trying your methods here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804784
but it won't stay in recovery long enough for me to adb, and nothing I flash seems to stop the loop.
forget about recovery mode right now.
Your best bet is to use Odin and flash the tar file that Adrynalyne just linked you to.
Get yourself into download mode (Turn phone off, hold volume down, turn on phone)
Check up above. I had made a typo. Use Odin to flash that kernel and get back with me asap. You made need to relfash Di01 too.
I flashed the test package and then flash DI01. No luck.
Not really sure what to do at this point. I rooted the phone while it was on DI01. Then I flashed Blackhole rom with StupidFast kernal. Then I decided to flash voodoo kernal instead. It stated to boot and gave me the voice telling me 3 minues, 2 minutes, then 20 minutes later still no boot. So I disengaged but I had the phone--!--pc logo. So I flashed DI01 via Odin. That's when I got the loop. So I put the disable_lagfix folder in Voodoo on the sdcard and flashed everything I could find and still no fix. I'm out of ideas at this point.
All I can tell you is that I am looking into it.
I do appreciate your help. I'm still looking around for answers myself but I can't find anything about wiping the FOTA, or failing to wipe the FOTA. I'm sure you'll have better luck than me.
I have a tweet for assistance in to the main Voodoo dev, supercurio. Havent heard back yet.
In the meantime,

Try flashing cwmrecovery.tar in odin.
Then if you have an update.zip on your sdcard, you might be able to get into cwm, to wipe data from there.
If you need an update.zip...

What adrynalyne said. totally inb4'd me.
Thanks adrynalyne, I actually already tried that. I flashed CWMrecovery.tar and I have the update.zip on the card. Still nothing.
This is just really discouraging, ya know? I've modded and remodded, flashed and reflashed my Vibrant a hundred times, but the first day with a Fascinate and its already a $500 paperweight.
Im fairly certain we can get it back up. Somehow. Join us on IRC?

I really messed up the flashing process. Voodoo possibly the culprit. Please help!

Hi everyone, this is my first post. I am one of those who waited patiently for 2.2 that I decided to finally root today. I followed all the instructions to root from the sticky here. The process went without a hitch and I flashed the jk6 stock from Team Whiskey from the development section.
I really enjoyed the 2.2 experience while it lasted until I flashed the JL5+voodoo kernel from supercurio's thread. I was under the impression that you could flash different kernels over the old ones. It went through the process of partitioning to ext4. Once it was done, I went to settings and about phone to see if there was JL5 anywhere and it wasn't. It still showed JK6. So I panicked. I disabled voodoo through clockwork recovery and went to the process of reverting back to rfs which I believed. I used odin to flash back to jfd. I know, I didn't restore the backup from clockwork because I wanted to start over( I still have those backups on my external sd card). To my knowledge, the flashing to jfd would completely wipe the data, replace the baseband, kernel, recovery and os.
I then used samsung kies mini to update to JI6. Everything went ok so I decided to root again. Instead of loading the update.zip to internal sdcard. I decided to use tga_gunnman once click root. That process went great until went it rebooted, the clockwork recovery screen popped up to my amazement. It seemed that there were still original files since the first time I rooted. I checked my files on my vibrant to find that I still had original files such as the clockwork back up, titamium back up, and even voodoo. I thought the flashing would completely remove all the data and files. So I panicked again. At this point, I don't know what I did that now I can't get to my log in screen and the screen I get is a picture of a phone, an exclamation, and a computer on my phone. I tried using odin again through download mode to go back to stock but under the message box on odin, it stops at cache.rfs. It has been stuck there for a long time and nothing is happening. I can't even get into recovery mode either.
Now I am not even sure if I properly disabled voodoo or deleted it which I thought the flashing back to jfd would do. I don't know if my partition is still rfs or ext4. I can't use my phone at all. Did I completely brick my phone? How do I fix the mess I got myself into? I really do appreciate anyone's help. I apologize for the length of this post. I wanted to be detailed as possible. Thank you.
EDIT: Spoke too soon. I used a different version of odin and now im back to stock jfd, but the original files are still there including the voodoo folder. I thought it wipes all the data. Also how do I know that the data partition is originally rfs and not ext4? I want to make sure before I root again. Thanks.
Can you get to recovery and restore your backup you created? I just read where you said you can not get in to recovery. What method are you using to try to access recovery?
well if you are back to stock, but just the folder is lingering around, cant you just reformat your sd card?
settings>sd card phone storage>format.
I did a back up using clockwork. I originally was trying to do to the recovery mode by pressing the vol keys and power and that didn't work. I actually got it back to stock jfd by using a different version of odin. My problem now is that I still have some original files on my phone including the voodoo folder. My understanding of flashing was that it wipes everything from your phone. I am not sure if i still have root access even after flashing back to stock jfd. Also if my partition is back to rfs or still stuck at ext4. I am a little confused here. I am afraid if i root again that the original files and folders from my first root will interfere with the new root method.
so If I format the internal sd card, will it completely erase all traces from my first root?

When you flash a new rom, or back to stock, it does not (usually) wipe the contents of your sd cards (internal or external). And if you are successfully running stock 2.1, you can rest assured you're back to rfs - so if that voodoo folder is making you nervous you can just delete it (it's only relevant if you have voodoo enabled). You're fine to re-root with whatever method you prefer.
Sounds like the soft-brick you experienced was purely from odin hanging on you, and that icon you saw has become a frequent visitor on my phone since I routinely have odin hanging issues (hence my avatar). I've found that v1.3 treats me the best, but sounds like whatever version you updated to worked, so there's no reason to deviate.
Download OCLF from the market and you will find out if you are currently rooted still.
There are a few misconceptions on what the wipe is.
/sdcard and external SD card are user accessible areas of the phone, and when it states that the ROM wipes your phone it does not touch these (there was only one incarnation of TW ROM's that inadvertently formated the entire filesystem for some users).
If you must format the phone to its complete stock form in ODIN you can use re-partition check box - the results are still mixed if it formats the entire FS or not, but most probably it will for you. So all your pictures, etc. should be backed up no matter what.
I appreciate the help guys. Thanks very much. The version of odin I used originally was v1.00 and the one I used to fix the problem was v1.70. My question now is did I properly flash the JL5 kernel over the JK6 even though when I checked the information on my phone it still stated as JK6? Also how do you properly reflash to a different kernel as well as modems? Do you overwrite the kernel or do you have to go back to stock before trying a new one? Thanks.

I'm not sure why you would flash the JL5 kernel. Does it have any added benefit over the JK6? If you want, you can flash the JL5 MODEM through clockwork using the JL5_modem.zip file posted in many threads.
You should not have to go back to a stock kernel before trying a new one, but if you flash a Voodoo kernel that converts your system to ext4, then you must convert it back to RFS before flashing another kernel. An easy way to be postively sure that you are in RFS is by getting "Terminal Emulator" from market, and type "su" press enter, and then "mount" and press enter. If you see rfs next to data, dbdata, datadata, and system, then you know your system is converted back to RFS. Otherwise, in Voodoo mode it will read ext4 next to those.
Also, if you are really paranoid about getting a fresh start, you can mount your internal SD on your computer and just delete everything on there. Don't worry, all the important Android system files will be restored upon each reboot. All the other crap on there will be erased.

dun bricked myself good this time..

borked up the fascinate whilst trying to update to the devs 2.2.
i know exactly what i did wrong. i was running voodoo5, and i clicked to disable lag fix, but i forgot to restart to let it *actually* disable before trying to load the new stuff. STUPID!
when that happened, it hung on samsung screen, then after battery pull all the phone will do is boot loop.. samsung screen, then goes to robot and screen says says "wiping cache, data, ect.." and then back to samsung screen to reboot and reboot.
i have literally 30 tabs open with articles from here and other forums, nothing seems to be working. here is what i have tried.
1. tried booting back to red cwm and playing with the lagfix (enable and disable again) to see if it would work, no go. i ended up losing red cwm - had to ODIN red back.. i cant get green to flash.
2. tried flashing DL09 both the full package and each individual part via ODIN
3. tried flashing the stocki500system.md5 (from the board) and kernel via ODIN, and nothing.. same boot loop. everything i have flashed via ODIN still gives me a boot loop..
4. tried to connect via ADB but it wont let me access the phone.. NOTE: i just downloaded ADB as a last resort and know nothing about it..
the only thing i can seem to do is get to red cwm. i have several backups in the restore section, but none of them seem to work - either i get a "no file found" even though i can see the file(s), or i get an error after it does load that says ".android_secure.img not found. skipping restore of /sdcard/.android_secure"
any ideas?
Okay follow these steps. Make sure you follow them step by step. Even though you have the lagfix installed this removed it for me.

Place the PIT file where it belongs. Then ODIN the system, kernel, and recovery in that order. Don't restart the process every time. Just ODIN them one after another.
thank you very much for taking a moment to answer. i did follow that thread, however
i managed to get the stocki500 recovery but the other files (recovery, PIT) are all 404 not found errors.
ive tried that stock md5 and it still boot loops. i actually have that tab open from when i tried that route..
any other ideas and thanks again
Thats why its not working. Try this restore by adrynalyne. The file is there and everything is in one. Just ODIN in the PDA section. This should work.

Thank you all for your help. i applied all the info i got here, and one of them worked it finally took the ODIN flash to stock and i recovered into FROYO from there.
seriously thank you all.. its great that the community is so supportive
I did the exact same thing a couple of days ago, and recovered a similar way, odin back to D101, flashed DL09 & superclean, then restored a backup, then disabled voodoo and finally flashed DL30. I've got a couple of questions.
1: Is voodoo completely off my phone or is it just disabled (is there a difference)? When I apply update.zip from the blue recovery I get green cwm.
2: Each time I backup, restore, flash a different rom I apply update.zip, then from green recovery I flash "new_cwm.zip". Is this necessary?

i followed all the hints i got, and i think that the one i got about formatting helped me get out of the boot loop from hell.. it finally took my flash from ODIN, it wouldn't until i did the format(s)..
mind you i am NOT an expert, however from what i read and talked about offline, voodoo is still resident on your phone but disabled (check to see if you have the voodoo file still on your card).. if DL30 is running fine, you are ok..
from what i have read, yes.. the new cwm is required in order to get it to mesh properly with 2.2 leak.. i havent had any issues and i loaded that as well.. from one of the posts i read, if you are a serial flasher, then you need to make sure that not only you download the new cwm zip, but also should have deleted the entire clockworkmod folder from your card for best results..
I love this threadd.... I did the same damn thingg...

need help, several subjects lol

ok. first off.
I just switched from dj05 voodoo with a sc rom, to sc2.3 voodoo eb01.
I made a back up in rom manager of dj05, and a tibu back up, but tibu, for some reason, didn't save to my sd. so I tried to go back to the dj05 back up, but it wouldn't boot. just got stuck on the samsung screen.
so I pushed dj05 back, tried to restore the back up, and still got stuck on the samsung screen. any ideas how to get this back?
ok. next. on sc2.3 eb01, I had neongt theme, decided I wanted revolution, so I downloaded revolution. put on sd, flashed, and boot looped. flashed neon gt again, it booted, and now I have both themes. dialer/menus from revolution, drop down from neon, etc. how would I go about getting just revolution?
lol ok next. so I kinda don't like how things are going with my current setup. would you recommend going with aosp v.7? and if so, would I push the eb01 voodoo kernel through odin then flash the rom through cwm?
thanks in advance for any help!

Won't boot back to dj05 because you probably didn't do an odin complete back to djo5. I'm betting you just tried flashing the rom ontop of your eb01 modem.
Your theme/rom issues are stemming from a lack of wiping data more then likely before flashing over the new rom/themes.
If you're running voodoo, try super clean 2.4 w/ voodoo...really nice and fast.

To be honest, I've never used a backup software. I manually copy and paste. any apps I download to a file on my computer then transfer them back over.
Follow these steps though.
1. Charge the battery till it reads 100%
2. Place Super Clean voodoo 2.4 on your SD card on your phone and enter download mode.
3. Plug in phone to odin and using PDA flash over eb01 modem
4. Go into CWM wipe data twice/bat statistics and cache...then select locate super clean 2.4 w/ voodoo and install and enjoy.
If you already have the eb01 modem set up, just download the sc 2.4 w/ voodoo and place it on your sd card and reboot into cwm. flash data at least twice and cache on a full charge. Then locate the zip file and extract/load via cwm. Should be good.
ok thanks. once there, should everything be wiped enough to be able to flash revolution theme on?

I've never really pursued anything that way. I run on flashed phones so there's alot more chances for things to get f'd up so I've always done things the extra cautious way unfortunately. That way if I get a corrupted sd card error or anything along the lines, I'm secured. Plus I keep a change log for prl and modem settings.

Problem after installing the wrong Voodoo version

My brother and I both have a Vibrant. He broke his so I loaned him mine for a week. While he had mine (which I've upgraded to 2.2), he installed Android 2.1 Voodoo 4 on it. Little to say, after rebooting, the phone wasn't booting past the boot screen.
I've now followed some instructions from the forum, and have reflashed my phone with Eugene's non-bricking ROM through Odin. The phone boots up just fine now. However, I am trying to install ROM Manager on the phone, so I can reflash my recovery ROM (non Voodoo) - and the Android market tells me it can't install the app due to not having enough free space - though I have over 1GB.
I am guessing this is because the internal disk is still setup in the Voodoo file system, and just enough space was repartitioned for the OS to go back on.
Can anyone help me restore my phone?
EDIT: I've also tried flashing a different recovery ROM through ODIN (with repartition), which also wouldn't let me get past the bootup screen.
I'm taking a wild guess here, I seriously don't know, but did you click repartition in Odin? I think that's would work, but like I said, I'm not completely sure.
I didn't repartition for the Eugene rom fix (as per the instruction I read), but did when I tried to load another version ontop of that.
I was in the Voodoo chatroom, and was able to get some help. It sounds like I need to download a stock ROM and then reset my file partition to get rid of the EXT4 partition, and reset it all to the default.
I have Eugene's "non bricking" rom, but I don't think that's what I need. Can anyone point me in the right direction of what I need and how to do this?
Just search for the stock Odin images and flash back. They should be in a sticky. I would repartition as well.
I am trying to find a stock version I can ODIN flash. Do you know where I can get one?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848737
I've gone through ODIN, done a reflash to the stock firmware, and repartitioned the phone as well.
Now, when I boot the phone up, I get the T-Mobile screen and the Galaxy S screen, and then the phone goes black (with no lights on) and doesn't go any further. My phone has been sitting on the desk like this for 20 minutes now.
I am wondering if this is like when moving to Voodoo, it takes a while to change the format to EXT4, is the phone having to go back to the default?
I 1am into the same problem with the old voodoo. What you'll need to do is flash back to stock via odin. Ur apps memory will be real low. Flash an old 2.1 voodoo. Let it do its thing once booted put a disable voodoo file into the folder and reboot. It will be ok after that. Hope that makes sense.
