My brother and I both have a Vibrant. He broke his so I loaned him mine for a week. While he had mine (which I've upgraded to 2.2), he installed Android 2.1 Voodoo 4 on it. Little to say, after rebooting, the phone wasn't booting past the boot screen.
I've now followed some instructions from the forum, and have reflashed my phone with Eugene's non-bricking ROM through Odin. The phone boots up just fine now. However, I am trying to install ROM Manager on the phone, so I can reflash my recovery ROM (non Voodoo) - and the Android market tells me it can't install the app due to not having enough free space - though I have over 1GB.
I am guessing this is because the internal disk is still setup in the Voodoo file system, and just enough space was repartitioned for the OS to go back on.
Can anyone help me restore my phone?
EDIT: I've also tried flashing a different recovery ROM through ODIN (with repartition), which also wouldn't let me get past the bootup screen.
I'm taking a wild guess here, I seriously don't know, but did you click repartition in Odin? I think that's would work, but like I said, I'm not completely sure.
I didn't repartition for the Eugene rom fix (as per the instruction I read), but did when I tried to load another version ontop of that.
I was in the Voodoo chatroom, and was able to get some help. It sounds like I need to download a stock ROM and then reset my file partition to get rid of the EXT4 partition, and reset it all to the default.
I have Eugene's "non bricking" rom, but I don't think that's what I need. Can anyone point me in the right direction of what I need and how to do this?
Just search for the stock Odin images and flash back. They should be in a sticky. I would repartition as well.
I am trying to find a stock version I can ODIN flash. Do you know where I can get one?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848737
I've gone through ODIN, done a reflash to the stock firmware, and repartitioned the phone as well.
Now, when I boot the phone up, I get the T-Mobile screen and the Galaxy S screen, and then the phone goes black (with no lights on) and doesn't go any further. My phone has been sitting on the desk like this for 20 minutes now.
I am wondering if this is like when moving to Voodoo, it takes a while to change the format to EXT4, is the phone having to go back to the default?
I 1am into the same problem with the old voodoo. What you'll need to do is flash back to stock via odin. Ur apps memory will be real low. Flash an old 2.1 voodoo. Let it do its thing once booted put a disable voodoo file into the folder and reboot. It will be ok after that. Hope that makes sense.

Hey guys i know "Help!" threads get annoying (at least in the Fascinate forum they do.) but i could really use some help.
Rooted my friends phone today (root, clockwork, rom manager), and was going to install regular JAC kernal /voodoo w/o color fix.. I made sure the phone had the smaller NAND chip. Installation went fine (phone booted, voice told me it was switching to ext. 4.) and the voice said voodoo was complete. The phone was stuck at the S logo for about an hour and it was then i decided voodoo was botched. From there i rebooted to clockwork and went to restore the nandroid i made when i rooted. The nandroid got stock at one of the Data files for about 30 minutes. (i have a feeling this is around where i messed things up myself) Decided screw it and was going to flash JI6(T959UVJI6) and the stock kernal with ODIN. Now the phone boots past the S logo but the screen stays black and only the backlight menu buttons light up. It wont go past there. Any quick help is appreciated.
You didn't disable the lagfix I'm assuming.
Odin Eugene's Froyo that doesn't brick, then Odin JFD, install ROM of you're choosing.
Did you even try to search for a fix before posting???

If you can still boot into clockwork recov. you can save it by pushing the undo voodoo zip file that was mentioned about. Assuming that u have adb access. If not odin froyo that doesnt brick tepartition checked. Turn off. Boot back in download. Odin stock jdf. Ji6 isnt a standalone rom. Its more like a no wipe update. Lucky his vibrant wasnt hardware locked lol. He will have a 90% chance of losing EVERYTHING
Had to odin flash froyo that doesnt brick then jfd and yep he lost all his data but he didnt have much to begin with. Now happily running Fusion. Thanks for the help guys!
Hi everyone, this is my first post. I am one of those who waited patiently for 2.2 that I decided to finally root today. I followed all the instructions to root from the sticky here. The process went without a hitch and I flashed the jk6 stock from Team Whiskey from the development section.
I really enjoyed the 2.2 experience while it lasted until I flashed the JL5+voodoo kernel from supercurio's thread. I was under the impression that you could flash different kernels over the old ones. It went through the process of partitioning to ext4. Once it was done, I went to settings and about phone to see if there was JL5 anywhere and it wasn't. It still showed JK6. So I panicked. I disabled voodoo through clockwork recovery and went to the process of reverting back to rfs which I believed. I used odin to flash back to jfd. I know, I didn't restore the backup from clockwork because I wanted to start over( I still have those backups on my external sd card). To my knowledge, the flashing to jfd would completely wipe the data, replace the baseband, kernel, recovery and os.
I then used samsung kies mini to update to JI6. Everything went ok so I decided to root again. Instead of loading the update.zip to internal sdcard. I decided to use tga_gunnman once click root. That process went great until went it rebooted, the clockwork recovery screen popped up to my amazement. It seemed that there were still original files since the first time I rooted. I checked my files on my vibrant to find that I still had original files such as the clockwork back up, titamium back up, and even voodoo. I thought the flashing would completely remove all the data and files. So I panicked again. At this point, I don't know what I did that now I can't get to my log in screen and the screen I get is a picture of a phone, an exclamation, and a computer on my phone. I tried using odin again through download mode to go back to stock but under the message box on odin, it stops at cache.rfs. It has been stuck there for a long time and nothing is happening. I can't even get into recovery mode either.
Now I am not even sure if I properly disabled voodoo or deleted it which I thought the flashing back to jfd would do. I don't know if my partition is still rfs or ext4. I can't use my phone at all. Did I completely brick my phone? How do I fix the mess I got myself into? I really do appreciate anyone's help. I apologize for the length of this post. I wanted to be detailed as possible. Thank you.
EDIT: Spoke too soon. I used a different version of odin and now im back to stock jfd, but the original files are still there including the voodoo folder. I thought it wipes all the data. Also how do I know that the data partition is originally rfs and not ext4? I want to make sure before I root again. Thanks.
Can you get to recovery and restore your backup you created? I just read where you said you can not get in to recovery. What method are you using to try to access recovery?
well if you are back to stock, but just the folder is lingering around, cant you just reformat your sd card?
settings>sd card phone storage>format.
I did a back up using clockwork. I originally was trying to do to the recovery mode by pressing the vol keys and power and that didn't work. I actually got it back to stock jfd by using a different version of odin. My problem now is that I still have some original files on my phone including the voodoo folder. My understanding of flashing was that it wipes everything from your phone. I am not sure if i still have root access even after flashing back to stock jfd. Also if my partition is back to rfs or still stuck at ext4. I am a little confused here. I am afraid if i root again that the original files and folders from my first root will interfere with the new root method.
so If I format the internal sd card, will it completely erase all traces from my first root?

When you flash a new rom, or back to stock, it does not (usually) wipe the contents of your sd cards (internal or external). And if you are successfully running stock 2.1, you can rest assured you're back to rfs - so if that voodoo folder is making you nervous you can just delete it (it's only relevant if you have voodoo enabled). You're fine to re-root with whatever method you prefer.
Sounds like the soft-brick you experienced was purely from odin hanging on you, and that icon you saw has become a frequent visitor on my phone since I routinely have odin hanging issues (hence my avatar). I've found that v1.3 treats me the best, but sounds like whatever version you updated to worked, so there's no reason to deviate.
Download OCLF from the market and you will find out if you are currently rooted still.
There are a few misconceptions on what the wipe is.
/sdcard and external SD card are user accessible areas of the phone, and when it states that the ROM wipes your phone it does not touch these (there was only one incarnation of TW ROM's that inadvertently formated the entire filesystem for some users).
If you must format the phone to its complete stock form in ODIN you can use re-partition check box - the results are still mixed if it formats the entire FS or not, but most probably it will for you. So all your pictures, etc. should be backed up no matter what.
I appreciate the help guys. Thanks very much. The version of odin I used originally was v1.00 and the one I used to fix the problem was v1.70. My question now is did I properly flash the JL5 kernel over the JK6 even though when I checked the information on my phone it still stated as JK6? Also how do you properly reflash to a different kernel as well as modems? Do you overwrite the kernel or do you have to go back to stock before trying a new one? Thanks.

I'm not sure why you would flash the JL5 kernel. Does it have any added benefit over the JK6? If you want, you can flash the JL5 MODEM through clockwork using the JL5_modem.zip file posted in many threads.
You should not have to go back to a stock kernel before trying a new one, but if you flash a Voodoo kernel that converts your system to ext4, then you must convert it back to RFS before flashing another kernel. An easy way to be postively sure that you are in RFS is by getting "Terminal Emulator" from market, and type "su" press enter, and then "mount" and press enter. If you see rfs next to data, dbdata, datadata, and system, then you know your system is converted back to RFS. Otherwise, in Voodoo mode it will read ext4 next to those.
Also, if you are really paranoid about getting a fresh start, you can mount your internal SD on your computer and just delete everything on there. Don't worry, all the important Android system files will be restored upon each reboot. All the other crap on there will be erased.
I'm a relative newbie and not very tech-oriented, and I appear to have screwed up big time. I'd appreciate any help that can be offered. To cut to the chase, when I attempt to boot up my Fascinate, it gets stuck indefinitely on the Samsung logo.
Here's what I did to screw it up. I rooted my phone when I first got it last year and did a lagfix. It unrooted with the update to JD05. Yesterday I attempted to root it again using two different 1-click methods, neither of which worked. I then followed the instructions in the "Modified CWMrecovery for Odin" thread, not having it work until finally succeeding in getting root using CWM Red. The phone rebooted and was rooted, and everything seemed fine, so I used Rom Manager to Boot to Recovery. This did something strange--it took 15 minutes to get to the recovery screen, with a digital voice periodically telling me how much longer it would take. When I got to the recovery screen the first thing I did was to perform a backup. I think this effort to be safe did me in, because the phone must have already been screwed up then and I think I backed up the screw-up.
I then attempted to reboot and since then all efforts get me stuck on the Samsung logo. I've tried almost all options from the Recovery screen: reboot system now, apply sdcard update.zip, wipe date/factory reset, wipe cache partition, install zip from ascard, and restore. All bring the same locked up phone.
I'd appreciate any ideas to bring my Fascinate back to life!
First off the only way to get to red CWM is to install a voodoo 5 kernel. I'm thinking the voodoo kernel and the one click lag fix don't play well together. I'm sure someone else will step in with more info however I would start by looking for a thred called how to completely remove voodoo. Then try odin to restore. Good luck.
Edit. I read your post again and not sure if u did one click lag fix or just an older voodoo kernel. Either way same result u have to disable voodoo 4 and one click to install voodoo 5. Odin it. The voice u hear was the voodoo kernel converting your system to ext4 if this was the first time you've heard this I think your first lag fix may have been the one click.

Yes this happed to me too. If i take it to the Verizon store will they know my phone is rooted and moded? i need help ASAP
Search the forums on how to properly removed the voodoo lag fix. Then you need to reflash dj05. Voodoo doesn't really do much except for show you a higher quadrant score and limit to what roms/themes you can install. Same thing happened to me. Just do a quick search, I think its in the development section. The easiest way to remove it is with and. Hope this is somewhat helpful.
so fresh and so superclean.
Don't bring it to verizon because you would be defrauding them for your mistake. see if you can access your sd card through the computer and put either a file or folder in the voodoo folder called disable_lagfix and try booting again. If that doesn't help (it is probably too late for that) then you need to flash back to stock through odin. find the thread in development on how to do that. Good luck. Your phone is not broken. Breathe.

Here is the ODIN back to stock if you don't want to bother with removing Voodoo. That should fix your phone with or without Voodoo. It's always worked for me.

Many thanks for all of the help.
hello just got my new epic 4g about 3 hours ago i just came from the samsung mesmerize and before that i was on captivate so far i am loving the epic (because of the keyboard) well i was looking at roms and things seem really different compared to the mesmerize... the rom i was looking at was the Frankenstein FROYO rom and i am looking forward to pick up and test out that rom but the thing is i am a little confuse on some of the things it wants me to do like the whole DK28 modem thing and the convert to ext4 system..... what is this stuff about? and also the whole No Journaling thing? so far i am rooted and thats about it on my phone where should i start lol
Welcome! I also use Frankenstein ROM.
Ok. The dk28 is our froyo leak that we have. If you go into settings and about phone and look at the baseband version that tells you your modem version. If you update to dk28 then the baseband version should say dk28. If you update to dk28 using Odin to flash the rom it will automatically update your modem. The ext4 thing is changing our filesystem from stock Rfs to ext4 which is a lot faster. When you update to dk28 use the one click root with clockwork mod version 3 and once finished boot into cwm by using power down, camera and power button and the cwm3 will automatically convert your filesystem to ext4. The no journaling mod speeds up the phone by about 15%. Having journaling is enabled to protect your data. If you bare in the middle of something and your battery dies it is there to protect it. Now when you disable it you just gave to be careful to Jake sure your battery doesn't die while your doing something cause it could corrupt your data. I've been using it for almost a month and I haven't gad any trouble. Good luck. Anymore questions just ask.
Midnight+midnight theme ftw

Welcome! Glad to hear you are enjoying the Epic so far. I use MeatROM. It works really well, especially with ext4.

Musclehead hit everything spot on, though I'm not sure exactly how much no journaling speeds up your processing capability. I'm on Viperrom Frozen, which uses EXT4 and flashes through CWM3. I think it's terrific. Tried Bonsai but it was too stock for my taste. It's a barebones, clean deal with Bonsai. I go more for the theme and baked in stuff personally.
so im a little lost here i am following this guide to upgrade to 2.2 http://briefmobile.com/how-to-update-sprint-epic-4g-to-android-2-2?cp=5
when i try the first way it says update verification failed
and the 2nd way in odin says SPH-D700-DK8-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 is invaild and then end sooo im a little stuck here and when i use the one click root with CWM3 it wont boot into the CWM it still stays in the standered manger
now i am stuck even more i got CWM3 to install and right after it it turned my phone into a ext4 system it wont boot and stays on the samsung screen =/ and i have the update.zip on my sd card but it is still giving me a error saying error 7

If you run CWM3/Ext4 on your 2.1 install it will bork and get stuck on the Samsung screen. CWM3/Ext4 only works with DK28.
I don't know if you could apply a zip via CWM3 (while installed on 2.1) or not, I would wager you couldn't... but since the DK28 update should apply all the changes as you would by flashing I'm not sure.
The proper process is DK28, then CWM3/Ext4, then rom.
If your DK28 tar file is giving an error in Odin before you even try to apply it, download it again and retry; something got messed up in your download most likely.
ok got my phone to go back to stock 2.1 with the odin way soo gonna try and download the dk28 file again and see where that takes me

Yeah give that a go if the new file checks OK, odin it to get to 2.2 (or you could download the update.zip if it is still floating around out there and install it via the samsung recovery). Boot it up and get your gmail configured etc, then go to debugging mode and run CW3 again.
Reboot into CWM3 and let it finish, then it should boot right up to the phone again. The pick a rom (if you want one) and apply it in CWM3. Just make sure the rom is compatible with ext4 and CWM3. Some are compatible with neither, some with ext4 but not CWM3. It usually says in the thread title which it is.
ok redownloaded it and installed my settings says i have 2.2 and the baseband says DK28 and did the CWM3/ext4 and now im stuck at the same samsung screen again

After you ran the CWM3 batch file, did you reboot into CWM3 to let it finish the installation (down volume, camera, power button at same time to turn the phone on)?
If yes, did it complete without errors?
this is what i am doing right after i installed the DK28 file i started my phone and used the oneclickCWM3 root it went thru fine and started up fine so i reset it and did the whole cam, power, volume down stuff and then it went into CWM and was updating my file system to EXt4 and then after it said complete it restarted and then just hangs in the samsung logo
At the CWM3 menu, you have to install a ROM from zip file.
ok everything is good just need to know if my undervolt took in dont know how i find out about that
So you got past the cwm3 conversion? Yeah you needed to flash a rom or it would get stuck. What undervolt mod are you talking about? What rom did you flash?

Hey I just seriously screwed my self over bassicly I tried to get miui to boot from the samsung fascinate however when I installed it in cmr it spassed out then powered of then went to the bootloader and I get a red error message saying can't mount data or something so then I tried to reinstall Eco 3 Odin using Odin and it worked it booted but it says I have zero data on my phone and I can't install anything. I also tried the oneclick soft unbricker but it fails saying adb divers are not installed when they are. I'm doing this on my phones browser witch is the only thing that seems to be working right now I also tried a band restore but I got the same data error message.
Have you tried restoring to DL17 and then re-upgrading to 2.2?
And how about a good old odin flash?
In worst case, I would ask imnuts for the full odin package, or use a fascinate full odin package to get you off your feet, then reflash the modem, and recovery, then wipe In recovery cyan cwm... Then flash ec03

He is on a Continuum, but you can use a fascinate Odin package to reformat partitions if they get messed up, then just reflash recovery and start fresh if you can get in then... That wasn't a really good thing though to suggest to a newcomer necessarily, so thank you for pointing that out
okay heres what happened firts i wanted to see if i could get the miui rom for the samsung fascinate to boot on the continuum there pretty much the same phone minus the ticker and screen size so i went into clockwork mod and wiped everything then went to install zip from sd card and clicked on the miui rom witch was the process we always used on the hero. then after i clicked on it, it started to install then my screen started shacking and my phone turned off. when i turned it back on it when to the bootloader and a red error message poped up saying
e:cant mount /dev/blockstill(invalid argument
and when i go to recovery it says the same thing when i try to wipe/restore nand it says the same thing. so at that point i powered off and went to download mode and reinstalled eco3 odin using pda mode on odin and it worked then it rebooted and i got to the set up screen and i got 2 force closes daily brefeing and something else i went ahead and skipped all that stuff and it loaded fine after that. however now for some reason it says i have zero system memory so i cant install any apps or save data however it does recognize my sd card but i cant install to sd card. so bassicly the phone functions just no internal memory. at this point i honestly dont know what to do everything on the hero was simple and straight forward and we never ran into these kind of problems. ive also tried to restore my nands and reinstall clockwork mod but still no dice. what i need to do now i guess is get the necessary files to go completely stock and see if that helps. and if someone could point me in the direction to those files i would really aprechiate it. oh and i tried the one click unbricker it sayed success but didnt really do anything.
oh and i know trying to install miui was stupid but i was just wanting to see if it would boot lol.
Download the PIT file in the Development forum, as well as the DL17 Odin package from the FAQ of the EC03 post I made. Flash the DL17 in PDA, with the PIT, and re-partition selected. After that, you should be back on DL17, and can do whatever you want from there.
huzzza!!!
thank god that worked thank yall so much i still cant believe that just happened but restoring the stock odin image worked and all is well. so i guess tommorow i can reroot and restore my nand.
once again thank yall for the help.
