I just bought a replacement power button/ flex cable for Nexus of ebay. Took me around 30 minutes to replace it but its fully working right now. Its around 30 £ .

How much did it cost for the repair out of interest? Did it take them long to get it back to you?
Just curious if to you it looked like a bad button connection or a bad cable? I know sometimes the buttons get crud in them so they dont make a proper connection...

The power button itself has a small cylindrical piece of plastic which pushes against and presses a small connection that sorta clicks (Which gives you the tactile feedback you feel). I think the problem occurs when either 1) The piece of plastic either bends/breaks/gets damaged in some way that makes that contact much harder to produce 2) The connection is connected to the phone via a cable/flex, however due to the Nexus one design it is bent around in order to be below the power button, while this is fine for the majority some devices, including mine, have seen the flex become damaged for whatever reason and either function intermittently or not at all.
It's also interesting to note that there is nothing holding the flex or the connection in place except for the design itself i.e. the battery bay plastic holds it all in place. My power button was never that responsive (But got progressively worse) so this may explain why.
Its always flex cable breaks and there is no way you can replace just the flex cable.You can find plenty of disassembly instruction over the net and yes you need to disassembly it to the pieces( still less to do than to replace digitizer.)I had a seal broken so i couldn't send it to HTC.

I did some googling and found a few images of that component, I remember taking it out and it was pretty simple so it should be just fine! Thanks for the info!

There are two little rubber parts that will likely fall out during the mainboard removal. One goes underneath the connector beside the sim card and one is a part of the microphon.
I wish I could have taken pictures of where those parts go, but alas, my only camera right now is my nexus, so....
BTW, I bought my parts at Mobile Brando. Quite well priced as compared to many other stores of the kind.

Can you confirm that the 3.5mm jack is on that board? Additionally, is that motherboard and flex cable for the AMOLED version or the SLCD version?

That's exactly the item, at that very same store. I also bought a loudspeaker as well as both back covers there. The audiojack is on board and I believe the flex cable has nothing to do with the screen type. The screen does not have to be removed.

Basically, it's quite straight forward, given that you aren't a clumsy oaf ;-)
Remember the two rubber parts that might fall out when you pull off the mainboard assembly. (one at the bottom, for the microphon (http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/fpRmPyN6h12mtNvt.huge ,a bit to the left of the plastic tool) and one at the connector beside the sim card (http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/EOfeocuwhCRASB6M.huge , on the left part, somewhat down from the serial number sticker).

I have replace Power button for my N1. But you can reset your N1 by do'n need it. Except when you want flash rom!

I recently changed the housing on my Wizard with a new one from Ebay. The old one was scratched an cracked in some places. I put it together with no problem. I also installed the new CR96 Touch HD v6.5.0.1.7 RC3 ROM.
Now I noticed that the up key on the keyboard isn't recognized. I can't remember the last time I used that key, so I can't tell what broke it. The key won't even light up on the keyboard.
I took apart the keyboard and checked to see if anything was damaged. Nothing that I can see. Triple checked the connector and can't see anything wrong. Every key works, but the up key.
Is there something broke with the hardware or is this software related?
I haven't heard of the problem you described attributed to the ROM you installed, but you can re-flash the same ROM or try a different one just to be sure.
I say your keypad PCB is damaged or the tiny hairline crack appeared in a flex, impossible to tell without seeing your device and proper diagnostic examination. Luckily the whole thing can be replaced for around $10-$11, although you may want to consider whether it's worth it, seeing how it's the key you use very seldomly anyway.

Thanks, it seems cheap enough to replace. I must have bent the connector cable too much or something. It is a rarely used key, but I actually wanted to use it for the semicolon. I'll give it some thought if $10 is worth it.
BTW, I got the housing from Ebay as well. Wasn't bad, but it was missing the button for com manager, and the battery cover didn't have hooks to keep the lid closed. Plus, a good amount of it needed Plastic Welding to hold it together. Not a big deal for me since I've known how to do it for a while, but I can't imagine many people do.
Just a fair warning to those who find this while searching, the Wizards plastic melts pretty quickly to a soldering iron. You can fix pretty much anything with it, and some skill. The housing replacement kits have these plastic points that you need to melt in order for stuff to hold together. For things like buttons, and even the stylus holder.
BTW, if you stylus doesn't stay within your wizard, it's probably because the old plastic welds broke. Just move the thing that holds the stylus back in place and use the solder iron like a welder. Good as new.
Hi, I come on here quite a lot for information as it's an amazing resource! This time however, I'm attempting to give something back!
I experienced the "black screen on slide out" on Monday. Phone completely screwed. I've also had a few droppages and had it apart once before so there's no way warranty is gonna help!
I stripped it down and soon discovered what it is that actually fails on the ribbon. The coating had worn through due to rubbing on something during the slide out / in process. it had been playing up for a while, probably due to shorting out on the metal case, but now the tracks (aluminium?) had worn right down.....
In pic 1 i've circled the worn area. The shiny section is where i'd tried taping over it to prevent shorting, before i realised the tracks were gone.
Got an almost new one off ebay for 15 quid and, realising it was going to happen again, came up with a solution that, so far, looks like it will work....
A while back I bought some "anti rattle felt" for my car's dashboard - really thin and strong self adhesive felt to prevent squeaking joins between dash sections. I cut a piece of this and stuck it to the new ribbon. Once this stuff is on it's well stuck, by the way!

On reassembly everything is working just fine so far! Here's hoping that it lasts longer than 6 months this time!
Just need a new casing now as mine is decidedly second hand!

When the coating wears off the ribbon cable it exposes the tracks in it. when you slide the keyboard out the exposed tracks short out on the metal casing and the screen loses it's input signal.
thats whats happened on mine at least and i presume quite a few others?

That's interesting: My phone was also losing signal with the keyboard out, and occasionally while closed up as well. It would just randomly drop to "no signal" for a few seconds.
It hasn't done it since replacing the ribbon cable.....could be coincidental of course.

It just started a week ago and I got the phone in January off of ebay. I'm new to opening up the phone so could anyone help me find the correct tools or have a link to a site with pictured instructions?
I noticed that the sliding mechanism started to go loose about 4-5 months ago but didn't expect the screen not respond in landscape mode. I have yet to see the other symptoms you all are referring to. I would like to fix this before it get worse.
In mine case it went totaly black after one week of this problem... You have all the instruction on youtube, there is where i looked. For tools you can be inovative, but the exactly right ones come with housings from ebay, it is only 15EUR, and i bet you have some cracks so it wouldn't hurt replacing. That is what i did, along with ordering new sliding mechanizm, and new ribbon cable.
I am open for ideas to prevent my ribbon cable from being cut at it weakest point again.
I'm assuming my flex ribbon went bad yesterday, since sliding the keypad out causes my screen to shut off.

Replaced my flex ribbon cable with one I bought on eBay. The screen doesn't turn on at all now, which leads me to believe the cable I was sent is defective. Put the old one back in and it works okay, less landscape mode. ughhh what a pain.
great tips! my input is I bought a case off of ebay that was ~60$ and everything actually fit fine for me...so I wouldn't discount every seller but you do get what you pay for, the 15$ cases are probablly the ones that will give you problems

Replaced the flex ribbon cable -
I got my flex ribbon cable a few weeks ago and took it to my local repair shop. They replaced it but the LCD screen/optical joystick receives no power. The touchscreen and everything else on the phone works just fine now. I thought it was a defective item so it was exchanged with a new one.
Got the repair shop to replace it again and the outcome still remains the same as the first.
Theres no light coming from the screen nor the side illumination.
I just told the repair shop to just place the original back in for the mean time.
Before the repairs, there would be a flicker of white light and random illuminations. Now there's no lights at all except the power botton.
Could it be defective a batch that the seller was sending out? or the repair shop's mistake and is playing dumb so they do not have to admint fault?
Hopefully there's an easy fix to this problem.
-Also I did inspect the ribbon before and after the repair. looks new as the OEm
Can anybody help me out with this new problem after replacing the cable -
perhaps you should try a hard reset. Ive had problems in the past where the optical joystick and the illuminators did not work, and that worked for me.
On the other hand, the top illuminators are on the same piece of hardware as the flex cable that was replaced, so a faulty flex cable is possible. The bottom illuminators are on the circuit board that the optical joystick attaches to, separate but connected to the flex cable.
Ive recently replaced my flex cable and touchscreen. The experience i had with the faulty touch screen was that it appeared to receive no power, but was in fact displaying a dark backlit illumination that could only be seen in the dark. At the same time however, the screen did not display anything. I'm not sure if this is similar to your experience, but if so then your touchscreen would need to be replaced.
ive done all repairs on the xperia myself, and one thing ive discovered is if something doesnt work right after a repair, simply disassembling it and reassembling it to make sure all the connections are properly done has worked for me in the past.

Now when you say the power button, do you mean that a red light appears under it?
I dont know if i can come to a conclusion or that i can help (or have helped) you come to a conclusion, but i can only assure you that the xperia acts out in strange and weird ways.

Thanks for the links. I've tried the hardreset and restoring the original rom but the issue is still there. It's really bugging me that everything works but the LCD screen. I'm currently using MyMobiler to use my phone. The touch screen works fine and so does the soft keys. Just no power for the lights. I might just give up and wait for another phone that catches my eye and then tinker with the xperia myself. but if anyone got a solution or want me to test something then I'll give it a try.
My warranty is no longer affective so I'll use my phone as a tester to help others with any problems.
TRIONDAVE, how's your Xperia running now with the cable mod that you did? Its been 6 months since you created the thread. I hope you're still around.
My Xperia X1 works nearly fine, except for the keyboard issues, so I'm thinking of opening it up. If your Ribbon mod helped I might just do it too once I've got it opened. Mine has a MOUNTain of cracks though, and the battery compartment itself is cracked on both side enough to make the compartment CURVED. Hence the Battery cover doesn't sit well.
I'm looking around for broken Xperias which I might be able to use to change the internal cracked casing. Lets see.

for the people with ribbon failures how long have you had the phone before it occurred ? im just interested on the cables lifespan.
mine is fine so far but i have noticed the slider is flimsy and rocks left and right.
After reading several posts to find a cure for my HTC HD2 unresponsive touch screen,( Slider wont slide to open applications), I decided to verify a theory. Software... Digitalizer screen, or power button.
Ok, first I Instelled about six different android versions, and the screen slide still failed. I reverted the cell back to original t-mobile windows software, and still locked screen.
Conclussion: The sofware is not the problem.
After several attempts pressing the red power button, I got the slider to open. Briefly, it locked again. Pressed the red button hard and tried to work the slide on the touch screen. Again briefly worked. After several more attempts I got it to slide and while the phone was awake, everything worked perfect. I played games, oppened applications, texted, made phone calls, and the touch screen worked flawless.
Conclussion: The digitalizer (Thin top glass screen on top of the display that responds to touch) is not the problem.
This led me to belibe that the power button was at fault. I called T-mobile and after explaining the problem, they decided to send me a different type of windows cell. I want my htc. So I declined the offer and decided to void the warranty and take matters in my own hands. Yes, I opened my HTC HD2. This is what I found: After about an hour I had carefully taken my htc apart without braking or scratching the phone or screen. When I finaly got to the buttons on the bottom, I noticed how cheap they where made. A thin copper circle on top of two contacts held in place by tape. Yes you heard right, tape. After a while, beating on the red end key for maybe a year or two, the tape brakes and the metal piece slides to the side, and makes the button to malfunction, that's why the hard pressing to make it work. I tried A bottle of comppressed power air to clean them before disassembling the phone but the way they are installed It's not possible to clean them like that.
Conclussion: The red end key is faulty.
I decided to keep the cell alive so I went on e-bay and ordered the buttons, and just in case I also got a new digitalizer for testing purpose.
The buttons panel was about 4 dollars and some change, and the digitalizer (touch screen) was about 14 dollars for a total of less than 20 bucks. (Worth it)
So here are some pics of my cell buttons, and what it should look like. After I get the parts and assemble it I will conclude and let you know the final and official veredict. As of now, it all leads to the button.
Please do let us know how you got on. I have a HD2 which I'd like to get up and running again so I can play with custom roms and leave my other mobile alone...lol. Any chance you could link to the places you got parts/tape from, and what tools we would need?

Well, I am still wayting for the parts, they are on the way. The parts I found on E-bay. The buttons panel was about five or 6 dollars, I also got the digitalizer which was about 15 dollars. As soon as I get the parts, I will assemble my hd2 with the original digytalizer (the thin top screen) and test to make sure the buttons were the problem. If all goes well, I will post a complete test result with links to how to get the parts, a link on how to dissassemble the hd2 and all info I can to help on this issue. I did a step back in life, and pulled out my trusty 7 years old motorola razr v3 and stuck my sim card so i can talk and text 5 words in 7 minutes. No internet... I need my HD2... Well, I will report back as soon as I can. Thanks for the wait...

I have been running Win6.5 still on my HD2, and have found in the last few days, my screen locks and I can't unlock it.
I came here deciding it was a software issue and was going to look into putting Android on my HD2.
I was slowly coming to the conclusion that it was the power button.
If I make an effort to NOT touch it - my phone seems happy.
It's amazing that we're all having the same problem about 2 and a bit years down the track since the HD2 was released - almost a built in expiry!!
And yeah - lots of details on how to fix it would be great.
The HD2 is too good-a-piece of hardware to allow a ****ty hardware button to be the cause of it's death.

You have to stick back the tape in the housing. The tape is electrically conductive. It connects the ground of the keyboard flex cable with the ground of the housing.

Be careful! There are two types of digitizer:
- Solder version http://www.parts4repair.com/htc-touch-hd2-touch-screen-with-digitizer-solder-version/
- Socket version http://www.parts4repair.com/htc-touch-hd2-touch-screen-with-digitizer-socket-version/
Be very careful when ordering parts, specially the digitizer they have several kinds, solder and socket, and different socket sizes. Compare parts with the ones in your cell to make sure, don't just believe the advertisements.

Just be extremely careful when you try this. That flex cable is so incredible fragile and easy to tear. My roommate tore the volume rocker section right off of his HD2.

I'm owner of HD2 EU, i got my screen broken.
I gave phone so that it would be repaired > after it was repaired flew away to other country.
Anyway few things don't work after they have changed the screen:
1) WIFI signal is really really low(need to hold phone ~10sm close to other phone/router in order to receive signal
2) GPS is not working(checked both android/wp7 with various tweaks(f.e. gps.conf/roms....)
3) Volume- button is not working(it was working, but it broke few weeks after the screen was changed), mb there's a way to just remove the volume rocker and click the buttons with something else f.e. small pencil or smth, since i'll need those buttons only when i rewrite software, atm i can't do that due to not working volume- button)
4) 5main buttons(call/home/win key/back/call drop) are "recessed"(hopefully google translated it the right way - incase it didn't: i mean they are slightly badly positioned: towards the one side(left) they're positioned fine, towards the right side they're slightly too deep into the screen).
Can i fix any of these issues at home myself and any thoughts what exactly needs to be checked/possibly/for sure replaced?
Fixing this phone by a repair man would cost way too much, i'd rather change the phone, anyway fully working hd2 = i'm really happy.
Between i checked tutorials on disassembly(f.e. pocketno*.***/hardware-1/official-htc-hd2-disassembly-assembly-training-videos-leaked ) - everything seems fine, but the thing is, that it shows full disassemply of all parts, not sure exactly what i need to do for checking f.e. the wifi/gps cable only.

There are 2 brass clips on the top right of the motherboard which attach to the rear case antenna. Make sure these brass clips are correctly functioning and working. There are 2 for the gps at top left big ones from memory then there are 2 at bottom for radio antenna and two at top right for wifi.

That's what i found from a topic of guy with similar story and wifi not working - guys adviced to check these parts. Is it hard to reach em? Also what can be used instead of "flange plastic stick" and also what can be used a screw driver of those special hd2 screws?

1) WIFI - i bet the cable is not fully connected, just slightly so it results in low electric signal = low wifi signal received by motherboard. I saw where those 2 connectors go and seems easy to reach that spot
2) GPS - the cable is not connected at all, i saw one of 2 places where the connector goes, one on motherboard top, and 2nd - i don't know?
3) Not sure if can be fixed, mb replacement part is required, not sure about idea with pen or smth like that.
4) Seems easy to be fixed, anyway it seems also that it's the hardest place to be reached, since i need to disassemply the motherboard fully, mb any though of how to do this faster?
Extra: what if i'll use blunt table knife instead of "flange plastic stick"?
Edit2: forgot to mention, when i click the volume- button - i can't feel any click(as there should be).
Without the volume down rocker/having winmo installed, you can't get into the boot loader, and without being able to get into the boot loader, there is no way to flash a radio (or even anything else ).

No, its not hard to reach them. You can use a guitare plectrum http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Waves-...503326&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=guitare+plectrum instead of "flange plastic stick".
For HD2 screws you need a torx screwdriver T5.

The second one goes on the little GPS board.

You will have a few scratch in backcover. I would only use plastic parts to open the phone.

Wohoo! Fixed the volume- button myself, adjusted that little metal part in the spot where the volume- presses.
Anyway:
The black cable(pretty small compared to white1) i think so it's wifi/bluetooth - is ruined. One part of it is fine, but the other1 hasn't got the connector to the board, it's just tearn off(by awesome people who changed my screen). So i'll try to buy a new cable > change it > hopefully wifi will work(btw when the cable is fully disconnected, it works with that small ~10sm distance).
GPS(i guess it's the white cable):
the one side of the cable(on top of the gps antenna board) is connected fully, anyway i can't access the second end of the cable(on the backside of motherboard. Any suggestions of how to do that? I know how to do that with all phone disassembly, anyway maby some parts can be skipped?
UPDATE:
I've done something to my camera, after i fixed volume button, and removed the black cable(since it wasn't connected) - my camera is not working on any roms, camera apps just crash>quit, what cable/part do i need to check? :S i haven't disconnected any wires, only unscrewed first 4 screws near the battery > removed the backpart of the phone to access wires > removed black wire > fixed volume button :S

Disassembled and reassembled the phone - at magically the camera works I don't know what was the problem :S
I just replaced the cracked screen on my Moto X Pure. Now there's no response visually on the screen. It seems to boot up. There's the initial vibration and I can turn on the flashlight by holding power.
I've disassembled and reassembled it several times now without a change in results. The one thing I suspect, but I'm not sure if it matters or not, is this. The socket on the motherboard for the ribbon cable going to the lcd has this black clip that you fold up to remove it. When I first folded it up, it came off. I can't get it back in. The cable seems to stay in fine, and I put a piece of tape over it for safety.
So does that black clip matter, or am I missing anything else obvious?

It seems this is more common than I thought I will post instructions here soon as to how I got it fixed
So for those who try to replace the screen on the motor x pure and damage the black clip holding the LCD flex cable in place...
1.) As soon as the black clip comes off you have damaged the phone. It is only meant to pried up with something thin like fingernails, and using a tool such as a plastic spudger will most likely break the clip.
2.) This mysterious black clip : I don't know what exactly it does but I am pretty sure it connects some of thing metal connectors, and if it is broken some of the connectors are most likely also broken, NOT GOOD.
3.) If you get no response from the screen when booting up but get a vibration, then the connectors most likely are the issue.
Right off the bat I'll say you need to find a specialized repair shop which does micro soldering. I took mine to many places first labeled as "phone repair stores" but they were unable to do anything, and the only place was a company which did micro soldering.
In my case, the repair shop had to order the part in to solder on, and they had to order from China, so I do not know how accessible the connectors are.
