[Q] How can I upgrade my Samsung Galaxy Apollo i5801? - Galaxy 3 General

Hello there.
I got this phone on Christmas Day, and am really enjoying it. It is my first smartphone and I used to have an iPod Touch before this, so switching to this was really easy and seamless (for me, anyway)
With recent news that Samsung are not updating the Apollo i5801 until April or something, I want to know if I can update it, and how? I am on Eclair 2.1 and want to go up to 2.2.
I am a complete n00b at this, so be gentle please
Thanks in advance.

Android on HD2?

Hey guys I just got the HTC HD2 about 2 weeks ago and love the phone but hate windows mobile. It freezes up all the time for hardly any reason (I tried to turn the alarm off and it froze for example) so I'm trying to figure out if it's possible yet to load Android onto the phone (or if not how soon it may be available). I've searched through the forum a bit and haven't found anything.
If anyone can tell me and also give a somewhat detailed instruction on how to load it on the phone (I'm a former iphone user so I know almost nothing about these or winmo)
Thanks a lot for the input.

If you searched, I don't know why you haven't found any of the many threads about this. No android yet... it will be a while before there is a well working port. If you hate WinMo, why did you get a WinMo phone?
Android???

Hi!
You have two options.
1. Read, Read, Read. Learn that the phone you have is quite capable and with a little bit of tweaking is an incredible phone.
2. Return it immediately for a full and prompt refund.

Yet another "is Android coming the the HD2" thread. Folks need to learn to search forums, seriously.
And for those app-happy people, do your research BEFORE buying your phones. It's not as if WinMo is new to the scene and there isn't any information about what is available for that phone OS.
There should be a sticky in the HD2 forums: "If you are an Android/iPhone user who just bought an HD2 and are wondering if you should take the phone back....take it back! And next time....RESEARCH!"
I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule, but it seems that more people who buy this without doing their research on the phone wind up taking it back anyway.
i'm the opposite. i bought an iphone and wished i had gotten the hd2. fortunately, i was able to switch them out and am loving the hd2.

hard reset.
doo a hard reset and start over. should fix it
Android will prob be ported over, i think sometime end of june or early july. When the EVO 4G comes out shouldnt be hard for them to port the ROM over from their..But be patient. the DEVS do this for free so we shouldnt be complaing..

The end of june or july? They probably will have a bootable port by then, but I doubt it will be very functional. The EVO rom might help them out with some drivers, but it won't be easily ported over. I wouldn't expect a fully functional rom for at least 6 months to a year. These things take time and are not easy. I have been watching their progress and discussions on the irc chat logs for months now... and while they are making great progress, there is still a huge amount to do and drivers to get working.

polaroid look for HD2 pictures

Hey guys,
As an Ex-iphone user, i loved too playing around with photo applics that add effects to pictures, i.e. vintage look, polaroid etc... Can you recommend on any applications for HD2 of the same nature?
I have found VintagePic in the marketplace, but i can't purchase it since my credit card does not match any of the countries in the list. Any other suggestions?
Thanks, Guy
Vignette, or camera 360 are excellent for that. (android)
thanks for the suggestion, however I'm still running stock rom, which means i'm limited to apps in WM...
Any other suggestions in that department?
any clues?
Like you said, you are limited if you sick with wm ;-)
I have 3 apps who makes that and much more on my hd2
Hi,
I must admit, as a new user of HD2, I'm very concerned about messing around and ending up bricking my phone. i finally got to the stage where i have everything working fine on my WM, so I'm less eager to go about and mess things up.
However, maybe i can start reading and learning from other people's experience on the different 'adventures' that i may run into if i try to install Android on my system. as far i i understand there is still no 100% working version, but it's getting close.
Can you reference me to the main discussion thread on the forum for the android on HD2? (how to install..etc...)
BTW - do i need to take something into consideration if my Phone is a t-mobile?
Thanks,
Guy
Hi Guysu,
I do believe there are effects within your camera options that allows a few effects, under advance, on the 3rd page, you will find effects, limited to GrayScale, Seipia (for ur old look) and Negative (for whatever only God knows!)
But I do hear you, because I too am looking for some fun Cam Apps for my beloved phone. It's always a little harder to find fun stuff for a serious phone.

on a more serious note, can someone direct me to the right thread on the options to migrate from WM to Android?

As someone who is only just a few months into his 24 month contract (a contract that has no built in data connection), I know the fear of mucking up your hardware. However I've found the whole experience to be quite safe.
The first step would be to get HSPL onto your phone from this thread - forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611433
Then reading this thread - forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=713977 should give you everything else you need to know to find and install a new ROM, Radio and Android build.
I went from stock ROM on my HD2 to cooked ROM, new Radio and Android all in a day with those threads.
The only issues I've noticed so far as not being able to change the alarm times on the built in clock (just download a new one from Android market) and sometimes the screen stops responding to touch for 10 seconds or so.
thanks for your help in getting started...
I tried to catch on my reading right away, but i noticed this warning in big red scary font:
1024LEOs (from T-Mobile with 1024ROM) ARE NOT SUPPORTED
so, as a T-mobile HD2 user, that means bye bye sweet android adventure for me i guess?
Looks like your android adventures don't have to be over quite yet forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=653614
I'll swop my HD2 with yours
But my experience with Android on my HD2, it's weird, sluggish and not fun. However that jumping cow game is fun in it. .
To be honest, the last I tried, I was on stock roms and radios, now with my new artemis rom and upgraded radio, maybe i should try again.. but i recalled I couldn't make phone calls lol..

EDIT: Nvm, it looks like it's not even good.

[Q] When will the official samsung update come?... and more.

Yes iknow it is impossible to answer, but since this is my first samsung device i have no clue how they do this, do they normaly release small software updates often, or few big ones a while?
Seing that P1000XXJM6 is leaked ( im all new on the galaxy tab forum, might be a newer one) makes me think that samsung will soon release a update with the changes?
i mean they cant wait for the android 2.3 update can they? If browser problems have been fixed and so on then i really want to root and get the newest version asap, but if i could wait a few weeks and get a official one, then i would.
If i start rooting and all, should i then feel safe about the future of my device, in other words, if samsung releases official firmware, will i be able to get it through xda? ( my guess is, yes but i would love an answer anyway)
let me say it like this:
do you really think if there is an official 2.3 released before some inofficial leaks will hit the ground? i don´t think so. anyway, if you are able to install a leak, for sure you will be able to install new official......
so why wait?
Dude that was not what i said. I was just. Wondering about samsung would release a update soon since there is this much improved new version out i mean wouldn't that make sense?
Well i wanna root and go custom but i see so many with problems and it seems like some loose features aswell like phone? Just want to have prober firmware on my tab and i thought that the whole root and flash thing would get better, safer and more polished? Maybe im all wrong, just through things where so much easier in the winmo days, maybe i just need to adapt, and get into it.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
if you think something makes sense, then wait...
if you have no experience with android flashing firmwares and/or rooting so you have to choose between staying "legal" and waiting with kies that samsung releases and you learn nothing as trust in big god samsung, or
-> you read 2 days and when you have it clear just try. you can go out as loser with a totally bricked tab or you win and have newer firmware and perhaps also more "freedom" on your device.
but if you choose the first way-> you will never know what it is and just keep talking about problems THE OTHERS has, dude.....
i could solve every described problem til now, because in this forum you find a lot of answers if you´re patiently reading and looking for......
Thanks for answering, just did not like your tone, i HAVE read most of the important treads and it is still not totally clear to me since there is so many different responses and you say you can solve everything while rooted, well, i really doubt that, i am not stupid neither naive.
Just wanted to know how Samsung usually did it with updates to their phones ( now tablet). Did not want a lecture, since i do not really need one, or at least not like that
Like i wrote i was thinking of rooting, but i was just wondering if i could expect Samsung to do updates to fix bugs in the nearest future, since the firmware version is already out there or if i might wait til thier 2.3 update to get anything.
I did not mean to be rude btw sorry if it came out that way.

Please help me. New to all of this.

Here is where I am now. I rooted my Galaxy S Vibrant and applied the lag fix. So far so good. I really want to have Android 2.2 but I do not want to lose any features. Can someone help me with this. I hear people talking about finding the best rom but is there a 2.2 upgrade that everyone likes the best?

[Q] Just bought a new Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000

Ok i've recently bought a new samsung galaxy tab GT-P1000 in england, its unlocked to all networks, running froyo xwjj3, i absolutely love it, it meets all my needs perfectly,
now i'm fairly new to the android world, ive been a devout iphone owner for years but figured it was time for a change, i had a good understanding of the "jailbreaking" world of the iphone but i'll be honest and say the android world of ROMs totally throws me off, like for instance is there a ROM which will make tab any better or faster? themes that maybe make use of its larger screen?
basically what i'm asking for is any type of help that u think would be useful to a rookie, apps and games, anything that can make full use of my lovely new machine?
also on a side note, i have an Orange Livebox router in my house and my samsung connects with it fine only after i press the wifi button on the box and then suddenly drops the signal at any specific time, what could be the cause of this?
thanks so much for any help
Congatulations and welcome to the family
A lot of us share your love to the Tab and motivated to make it even better.
If Tab meets your current needs you might not need any modifications. The easy way is just following Samsung notifications about available updates and simply enjoy your Tab.
If you want to be on the edge of XDA development and ready to take risk of testing latest releases of firmware you need to go through reading of the Development forum.
It might be a lot of reading but it would save your from frustration when something goes wrong.
Luckly, development is in very good state right now and your can choose fast firmware that is tested enough for everyday use.
to update the tab you will need kies (which sucks)

Just read a few threads in the development section here , I was a complete novice not long ago , I now have a custom kernal + rom and my device is rooted. Some of the roms are better but jj7 is just fine - you can update officially from jj3 using kies as its genuine samsung software
For nice themes grab adw launcher from the market and then add some themes for it... google is your friend

thats the thing tho, i have been reading up and looking, from what i can gather 90% of the customs roms on the samung galaxy tab are for non UK users who want to make phone calls from there device, we can already do that in the UK so what types of ROMs are beneficial to us?
also ive heard launcher pro is better for the galaxy tab rather adw launcher, is that true?
thanks for the help by the way
