In the Messaging app when SMS Message are threaded it displays a picture from the person the message was sent by, and another picture that is next to the SMS that are sent by Me. In the CM6.1 ROM the default Picture is a Grey Box...
Is there anyway of changing this?
I wish, this bothered me SO much at first..
Handcent allows it in the settings fairly easily well worth the small price to support good product that enhances my customization.
In CM, go to Settings -> Call Settings -> Additional Settings -> My Phone Number and put in your phone number.
Then make sure you have a contact with the picture you want to see in your contacts list associated with the same number.
And presto, picture.

This actually works...
Wish it would pull the picture from facebook like the original Slide ROM does, but at least the annoying gray square is gone..
Thanks for the help

Hi guys. I am also having this problem, admittidly with an HTC Saphire. I can't find any way to input "my number" anywhere. In settings "about phone" it says, number unknown and is greyed out. Anyone know how on a Saphire. Then maybe this would also fix my SMS picture problem.
Cheers, just in case.

The only downside I've found is that the setting doesn't stick through a reboot (so you have to put your phone number back in after each one). Upon checking, there's a bug tracker issue for that problem on the CM bug tracker so *shrug* hopefully it gets fixed some time soon.
Solution.
There is another longer thread somewhere on this, and the solution works, I have just done it.
Basically the sim card needs to be programmed with "my number". On my Magic, when you go to about phone, it would say number "unknown". Magic doesn't allow you to change this. Put your sim into another phone; I ended up using my girlfriends Backberry; and navigate to additional settings, or whatever, until you find Sim Card actions. Then in there edit sim card to show your phone number in international format (+44(leave out 0)**********).
Once done, pop card back into your phone, and as long as you have a contact with your number and picture logged away, then voila.
Works on any phone that allows you to edit sim card.
Hope this helps.

Madam*, I owe you a cookie.
*lol, couldn't find thanks so I clicked on your homepage...
Also doesn't need resetting after a reboot, however I had to reboot to make the pics stay after re-entering the messsaging app.

this is probably easy to fix or just an error on my part.
I'm using the official rom with some theme mods.
So when i go to the contact list, click on a contact and then click the "call mobile phone" entry for that contact, the option gets activated/grey background, just to get deactivated half a second later and it never actually dials the number (same with people in the favorites list)
The contacts are stored on the phone and copied over from my blackstone, so I know the numbers are all valid.
Anyone got any ideas? Any help would be appreciated
[edit]
oh and i can dial just fine when i hiz phone on the today screen, go to the menu and choose "open contact"
[edit2]
I just realized, when I'm on the contact page of a contact (where you see there phone numbers and so on), I can click Menu -> Show more information, which takes me to the "old" contact page (as it used to be in wm 6.1), where calling someone works as well.
So there are ways around this, it's just annoying having those 2 more presses just to call a number.
I am running CyanogenMOD 7 Nightlies and all I was wondering is if I can add or change MY personal profile picture where it shows a picture next to my number when I'm texting.
go to your contacts, add contact with the name me, add your number then add your pic and save it. should be good.
it didn't work.

The method from Havlic did not work for me, because under "call settings" I do not have the option for "additional settings"... dont know why, I am running cm7 nightly, but anyways--
--the solution originally put forward in this thread worked great for me... just created a contact labled "me" and took a picture

Well, no. That's only a "partial" solution.
Once again, two things need to be in place for this to work:
1) You have to let the phone know your own phone number by specifying it in the "Call settings"
2) You have to create a contact with the same phone number and assign a picture to it. It doesn't really matter what name you give to that contact ("Me", "Myself", "Irene" or whatever else).
If you fail to make sure that step 1 is done, then the picture will only "half-work", so to say. More specifically, the picture you used on step 2 will only appear next to incoming messages. But all outgoing messages will have no picture next to them.

There's no such thing as "my contact card" under CM7. You must be thinking about HTC Sense ROM. CM7, unlike Sense, does not have a dedicated contact entry for yourself.
One can be emulated by creating an entry for your own phone number, but it doesn't have to be named "my contact card".
Does anyone know how to set up my own profile picture under CM7?
For example, if I go to SMS messaging interface, each message has a placeholder for the picture of the sender. The pictures of other people are, of course, taken from their profiles in the contact list. But messages sent from my phone just have an empty gray placeholder. How do I specify the picture to be used for my messages?
In HTC Sense ROM the address book has a special entry - "Me" - which is used as the profile of the phone owner and the picture from that entry is used with messages sent from this phone. CM7 has no such entry. What does CM7 offer instead?

Er... OK. So the last post at your link says
"Contacts - my contact card - menu - edit contact"
What does "my contact card" mean? There's no "my contact card" entry in contact list in CM7. There's no "my contact card" entry in contact list menu.

You have to create a contact card (person) for yourself. Then edit the picture within that contact point.

Well, I already tried that and it didn't work. If you simply create a contact card for yourself, it will only display the picture for incoming messages that you send to yourself. I.e. you send a message to your own phone number, then in the SMS list the incoming message will have the picture next to it, while the outgoing message will still have a gray placeholder next to it. Not very useful. So, no, simply creating a contact entry for yourself does not work (and the thread you found by search does actually state that "it didn't work").
I found the solution though. The key part is to go to "Settings -> Call Settings -> Additional Settings -> My Phone Number" and enter the phone number in that field. CM7 will find the contact with that phone number in the contact list and use the picture from that contact as your profile picture. Of course, the natural approach would be to create a contact entry for yourself and specify your own phone number as "My Phone Number"
P.S. It is surprising how many threads dedicated to this issue say that "you have to create a contact entry for yourself" and the authors of the original question immediately respond that "it doesn't work" (and it really doesn't) and the thread basically ends there without offering any solution. They "should of" (sic!) mentioned the key bit with "My Phone Number" setting! I hope this thread will serve as the complete solution for the issue.
Glad you figured out. What you were seeing was sense dialer combined with facebook for htc. I have a feeling if you downloaded the official facebook app and synced the contacts, you will get the profile picture back. I can't prove it since i am not on aosp roms, and cant remember how its was when I had mt3g. Good luck. All and all its not a big deal, you know what yourself looks like.

Indeed, OpenSource seems to attract lots of "knowledgeable" bullshitters.
Just wasted a whole load of time creating "me" contacts in different cases, trying it as Google and local contacts, nothing working, and then I found this thread hidden away...
Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I have a few apps that require a "phone number" in order to work - one of which is the verizon remote control application. Does any one know where in the android setup the phone number is stored, and how I could go about just adding a random number to it so that when I am on my wifi and the cable box checks for allowed numbers it can match?
Thank you
Same here, it will be great to use Whatsapp on my NC. Anyone??
try textfree - a free texting app that assigns a phone number to your nook -

Well, if the textfree thing dosent work, you can (from the home screen) click menu > settings > call settings > Additional Settings (under other call settings) > my phone number. Hope this helps the number you set shows up in the about tablet menu
EDIT: Im running CM7, not sure if this works on other ROMs
Thanks!! I will try both suggestions!!!
Hello,
I used to join my contacts (facebook, linkedin, google plus, google) to one. After the join and when I an into the contact details If I pressed the "three dots" settings button I could see an option "mark as default". This option give me the opportunity to select the default name, photo, number of the contact... So for example I could use the photo from facebook, the name from google...
After updating to lollipop Poland SM-N910C I do not see this option anymore. Did samsung remove it ? Or is it just the specific CSC that disables this function?
Could anyone else see if this "Marked as default" exists into their phone....after lollipop update??
Thanks in advance
Hello,
I cannot really say anything about Note 4, but the same thing happened on my S4+ when I updated to Lollipop. The "mark as default" option is gone and I've yet to figure out how to actually do that.
I know this is not really helping with this problem at all, but at least others will now know that it's not something that has happened to just them.
Hi there,
the feature is stull there.
let say you have more than 2 numbers for one of your contact.
you have to long press on one of the number, then a pop-menu will appear, click the "set as default" if you wanr to make it a default number.
hopefully the above helps.
regards,
morisa

I think it is lollipop restriction... I do not know why.. It was a good feature!
This feature is also now missing on my Galaxy S5, after the Lollipop update.
I also really preferred this feature, being able to select which photo to use. There appears to be a heirarchy list, to which the Contact list will populate the photo, and it is as follows:
Self taken picture > LinkedIn > Google+ > Facebook
So, if the contact is being forced into an image I do not prefer, the only work-around that I have able to come up with is unlinking the connection with the contact. So, if said contact doesn't have a LinkedIn photo associated with their account, I have do disassociate it with the contact, lest be forced to see I grey blank picture icon.
Very annoying...wish they would fix this.
This feature is still there, but buggy.
Hello, I found this feature! But it looks like the update to Android 5.0.1 made it buggy.
I upgraded my AT&T S4 to 5.0.1 and the "Mark as Default" option went away but after trial and error I noticed it only went away for contacts that I had linked to a Facebook entry. If I un-linked a Facebook entry from a contact, the menu item came back. I could use it to set the defaults. Then I re-linked the Facebook entry and the defaults were preserved.
The looks like a bug to me but I'm not sure on what level it was changed (Samsung/Google/AT&T)
-Mike
I found some kind of workaround, but it's very empirical:
- Go to the details of a contact you want to change the default name or picture of, and click on the link icon. You will be redirected to the list of linked contact for the person
- From there, just unlink the contacts who don't have the right name and picture, one by one, all except the one who has the name and picture you want to keep.
- Then, add back all the linked contacts again, one by one. The contact name and picture shouldn't change from the previous step.
It did work for me. The only issue I see is that you might not be able to mix the name of linked contact #1 with picture of contact #2 for example.
Found a work around
While in the edit menu of the contact simply click on each linked profile tab(ie facebook, google, linkedin) and hit the photo then remove photo for all the ones you dont want and it will go to the only available photo.
Work around solution

Go to the contact and hit edit. Add another phone number (you can make it 999-999-9999). Hit save. The phone should recognize this as a conflict and ask you "Mark as default - This contact has more than 1 phone number /email address. Select default?" Click OK. It should take you to a screen where you can then select the default Caller ID photo (facebook, google, linkedin, etc.) and other defaults (phone, email, etc.).
It's a hassle, but it works for me.
Nice one peep's, now at least we got back some control from this chaos of the Lollipop upgrade to 5.0.1.
Either unlink all, choose the one we want as default, then re-link. Or... un-link all, remove the other pictures or Names etc we don't want from the other accounts, then re-link keeping the default one we want as default.
---------- Post added at 05:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:38 AM ----------
This is a good work-around but they made our life harder by taking a simple good thing away. Unless of course it's a bug that should be fixed in Lollipop 5.1.
If you long hold the item that is currently set as default, you can choose to remove the default status. Then long hold the item that you want, and choose to mark it as default.
