Email Trouble - Epic 4G General

I am new to the EPIC (6 Days) and enjoying it but having some trouble with email. My Gmail and Yahoo accounts seem to work fine however my POP comcast account and POP School account sometimes do not load. It seems to be random where sometimes I get emails loaded to the Epic and othertimes they don't (it shows loading but that screen never goes away). Any suggestions?
Does anyone know if the EVO handles POP email better than the Epic?

I think you should ask that question on the evo general section because most of us on this section are epic users.
Thumbs up for being in general without having any one ***** at you :-D

Exchange notification problems.

Is anyone else having problems getting alerts or notifications for new email that hits exchange?
New email flows in but the notification bar never shows it, despite it being set to do so.
For whatever it's worth, exchange notifications do show up in the status bar for me.
They work for me as well. It must be something unique with your config.
They work for me sometimes, and sometimes not.
I am hoping the Verizon update due out anytime will help.
Darn. Just noticed after last nights update and reboot that I did have a new message come in with no status bar notification.

There is a thorough Motorola support forum thread on this subject. It looks like Moto really dropped the ball on pre-release exchange testing. You should consider yourself lucky, I can't even connect to Exchange .
It's looking as if the SSL doens't even work, so if you unckeck SSL, it still looks for the cert. We don't have SSL here, so we're out of luck...they claim to be working on a fix.

This is a major oversight, I mean come on, I know that their PCS division at Moto moved to Gmail, but the rest of their company is still on exchange how could they mess this up out of the box?
I get some notifications, like 1 in 20 emails. Really frustrating.
I so I set mine to sync to the last week. First time I go in it does that slowly. Next time I hit refresh it sync's the whole damn inbox (but not my other folders). Then I can't receive anymore mail (push worked the first time) which I'm assuming is because the inbox is full on the phone... maybe.
No ssl on our server either so i couldn't connect. Had to resort to spending the money on touchdown but it works so well i can't complain. I also don't mind keeping the work stuff separate

Did you make sure push was turned on? I noticed that my exchange account was defaulted to push off.

I'm having major issues as well. To be honest this really impacts the useablilty of the device for me. We are very email centric where I work. My iPhone on the other hand somethings notifies me before the Outlook client on my laptop... Grrr.
Same issue here. Calander/Gmail/Text/etc. all work with the notification bar but my Exchange email does not pop up on the notification bar.

Give it a shot. Works wonders for me
I have been using Seven, works great, just a bit of a hassle to have to have two apps handling different types of email accounts.
This issue has been present while using WIFI. Turn off wifi and restart your phone. The phone will start getting pushed mail again.
Really annoying...

School e-mail with X10?

Hey so Im going to college again and I get like 10-15 emails a day from my professors and I dont always have my laptop with me(1 of the reason I bought the x10).
Anyway I tried to set up an e-mail account with AOL, it worked fine so I have that working. But the other email account with Michigan State University... there was a problem, so if anyone else knows how to set it up any help would be appreciated.
Oh and Im using the email app that the x10 shipped with nothing from the market.
I don't use the stock email app, but you would basically just go to create a new account, enter your email and password, then when it asks for like Incoming Server Settings, Outgoing Server Settings, etc., just find them on this page:
http://techbase.msu.edu/article.asp?id=224
I know it says it's for Outlook, but all of the settings are the same, they might just not appear in the same order.
Hope that was what you need?
mm well what i did was google my schools name with outlook or thunderbird
and i got links on what port to use and the servers
You have a strangely close relationship with your professor to be getting that many emails a day...
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
well got it working, thanks guys.
but its loading really really slow, anyone got an idea why?
and yetep, i dont have a close relationship with my professors, my school has 46,000 people attending. so its very hard to communicate with everyone except using email especially when one class can have up to 500 people in it.
and i only get 0-3 emails a day from my professors and that too is mainly during exam weeks, but i get a lot of other emails which are important such as events that are going on, etc...
Christ, it was a joke dude , lighten up ;-) I understand lol

[Q] Email not auto checking?

Have a weird problem. Got the Epic on release day, set up my two emails that I want to be able to check from the phone, a POP3 account and a Gmail (that is not associated to the phone to sync).
Both are set to auto check for new mail every 5 mins. Everything worked great for about a day, but then stopped.
Neither email account is auto checking for mail regardless of the frequency I set it to. 5 mins, 10 mins, hourly, etc.
If I go into the inbox however for one of the email accounts it seems to instantly check for new mail and then all the messages show up.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
Ok, after doing some Googling and coming across a comment on some random site I did a little test.
I have two email accounts configured, and both were set to check every 5 minutes. It seems that the stock email app has some kind of issue initiating more than one email check at a time, so if you have multiple accounts and have them set to the same check frequency, it breaks. I left one account at 5 minutes, set the other to 10 minutes, and they both were able to receive test messages I sent.
How retarded.
Hopefully there will be a fix for this at some point.
Mine is doing this too! however i do have them on different times. i haven't got a notification i got email i have to click email then it loads the messages?
Any way to fix this?
Exactly what mine was doing but putting the frequency check times at different times 5 min & 10 min seemed to have fixed it.
I just sent two more test emails to make sure it wasn't a fluke and will report back if it did indeed fix mine or just happened to work once after I had rebooted the phone.
Hmm,..previous test was a fluke maybe affected by having gotten an SMS around the same time...
Mine is still broken.
I have found that the email app must stay running in the background in order to sync additional mailboxes other than the default gmail account. Make sure any task killers are configured to ignore the email app. Using the Home key to exit mail works for me. YMMV!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I don't have any task killers installed, but I do exit the mail program with the back button.
I'll try starting it up, and then just exiting using the home button to see if that changes the behavior.
I'll report back the results.

Also the damn battery takes 4 hours to fully charge
Ok, leaving the email app running in the background by using the home key to exit it vs the back key made no difference. Still doesn't refresh the inbox until you open the email app up and go into it.
This sucks.

How is this relevant to the topic?
i have 2 yahoos and a gmail and they are all updating fine. who is the provider of this email service?
One is a Gmail account the other a POP3 that had no issues over the last 5-6 years on WinMo using Sprint, nor on Android on my old Touch Pro, so that isn't the issue.
After roaming around the net a bit, it seems this a fairly widespread issue with no known fixes yet.
I also have this issue, and its quite frustrating. I have email accts for hotmail, gmail, yahoo, and aol. The only one that gets mail properly is the hotmail account, since it's set up using ActiveSync. The others often don't show as getting new email for about a day or so unless I manually go into each account. Only then will it realize there are new messages.
I too am having the same problem. My default e-mail is a comcast account set up to check every 5 mins. My 2nd acct is a gmail acct set to check every 30 mins. Coming to this phone from a blackberry and my curve would get the e-mails faster than my PC's outlook would.
I rooted my wife's EVO the day she got it bc she hated all the pre-loaded sprint bs. I'm in the same boat with my epic, but i'm hesistant to root it and load an Android 2.2 rom because i want to wait for bugs like this to be fixed.
I'm also getting a pop-up error msg on my epic about 4-5 times per day that says something along the lines of "unable to connect to network", even though i have service on the top "taskbar". The pop-up gives me the option to retry or cancel. Either selection doesn't seem to do anything. I have wi-fi, 4g, gps, and bluetooth turned off for battery life. I don't know if this could correlate to the e-mail syncing problem so I figured i'd toss it out there.
You know, the frustrating thing is I sit here and wait for months for this phone to come out and then they have all these problems with it. My wife's HTC EVO hasn't had a single problem since day 1 and she got it on release day too. The only thing good i can say about this epic compared to the evo (with exception of the slide out keyboard) is the battery life is marginally better on standby.
Subscribing to see what the fix is...
A lot of sites are rumoring there being some type of OTA update near the end of September. Some say it will just e fixes and patches for 2.1 for things exactly like this, others are crossing their fingers that it may be Froyo.
Either way, as long as it fixes this issue I'll be happy...so we'll just have to cross our fingers, wait and see.
lately my e-mail checking has been getting worse, sometimes not even syncing certain items. i went into settings and compared the send receive port #'s to the ones set up in my outlook, and the settings were all wrong as well as the port #'s. I changed them all to match my outlook and now everything is working fine for the moment. time will tell if this was the problem.
I'd be surprised if that fixes it for you.
I know that isn't the issue with mine. All of my manually configured server settings are correct and it still does it.
Crossing my fingers this will be patched/updated at some point, but until then I have MailDroid installed which is getting new mail notifications perfectly. I don't really like MailDroid as much as the integrated client, so whenever MailDroid lets me know I have an email, I just go into the stock email client and manually refresh to read/reply/etc.

my hotmail account has been spamming people

Long story short i have my hotmail, along with other accounts setup in my evos email client, awhile back I noticed I sent myself an email about diet crap that I personaly did not send and so I dismissed it.
Well tonight I had over a hundred mailer daemon unable to reach address blah blah in my email inbox I check my sent box and sure enough my account has been mailing random people crap about diet stuff.
Anyways i heard Android has some exploits that could be leading to our phones being related in a exploit.
I changed my email password and it stopped doing this temporarily but it started right back up again after a while.
Can this be Related to my phone at all?

It's probably not your phone.
It's far more likely that you (or someone else in your household) clicked something you shouldn't have on a website, and have a keylogger on your computer now.
Or if you're... Uneducated enough to be running an open WiFi network (or, even more facepalm-worthy, connected to one that doesn't belong to you, and mooching off it), then someone could be picking up your plaintext passwords.
But really, biggest chance is you've got some malware on your computer. Congrats!
Your biggest issue is that you are still using hotmail...
- Changed your hotmail password from a virus-free computer or your EVO's browser.
- Run AntiMalware and an antivirus on your computer.
- Switch to Gmail
Problem solved.
well, i know about wlan encryption and i use wpa2 personal, i also know how to crack wep
i also know about keystroke loggers, i do use them and know how to detect software versions of them
somehow my girlfriend somehow gets a copy forwarded to her of email i reply to, even though there is no trace of a setting for this anywhere that i can find, which i always found suspicious and it doesn't happen all the time. she could be spying or maybe its from when we tried to link our outlook calendars and something broke
i use hot-mail because until recently i have had zero problems and i created this hotmail account back in 2001 on my dream cast before i even knew how to turn on a pc, and now i run a computer repair shop, so it kinda has sentimental value, so i want to fix this, not throw it away. also i have many other email address for work and school purposes so email isn't nothing new to me.
last night i had my gf change my password on my hotmail account because i was on my evo and hotmail.com kept sending me to their mobile site and i couldn't see any settings for change password and she had her laptop in her lap. maybe her laptop is the culpti but i doubt it, i will check into it though.
today i changed my password to my hotmail on my work computer. i will allow my evo access to the new password for the sake of tying to figure out where the culprit is and only changing one thing at a time.
thanks for the replies i really was hoping to hear that someone has less then public information about hotmail email servers them selves being hacked. because i have friends with hotmail accounts that started spamming me not too long before my account starting spamming others.
i guess i'll use this thread to keep notes on this situation, but thanks for the replies

Sorry, I'm very blunt. :|
Well my hotmail accounts were still spamming people, also my yahoo account started to join in on the fun.
I changed passwords on both accounts to something very lone Qiu no dictionary words and used numbers and symbols. And about a day later low and behold I am spamming people again.
Focusing in on my hotmail account, I can see the sent folder, in my web based GUI, I can see all these emails that my account has been sending.
I have probably have questionable apps on my phone so I thought I'd wipe my phone. Well, its been 4 days since I have had any problems.
While I can't confirm my suspecion, I can suggest as a possibility that my phone had something that was pulling my passwords and sending them out to someone or something that would inturn log into my accounts and spam away.
I don't have time to really look into this any more thoroughly but I thought I'd document my observations.

STOP using pirated apps. That's my guess.
It was most likely an app that requests permissions to your contacts and email. There are a lot of shady apps out there and google needs to step up with this crap.
I always avoid them but it's ridiculous how many apps (themes and stupid stuff) request information.
Well surprise surprise, it was most likely an app I got from the market that was stealing my info. Not that I can confirm it, but most of the replies implied I was an idiot and that it couldn't possible be my phone. I eventualy got an email from Google saying I had installed something from the mArket that was infected.
So it was not that I'm stoopid ignorant, it wasnt that i was using hotmail, it wasnt that my pc was infected.
It was my phone all along.
Maybe there is a thread about this already, but I bet my topic.was created first and I thought I'd bring this thread to a conclusion.

This isn't malware on your phone. It's been a huge issue with hotmail for the past couple of weeks. People who use the same pass across multiple sites usually are the most vuln. Also happens when you get phished.
I have a friend thats has the same thing going on with his hotmail...hasn't been using it at all and all of a sudden I'm getting emails from him sending me links to increase my penis length...and god knows I don't need that..
I wouldnt dismiss it being non-phone related. I recently have been having it happen on my hotmail account as well and I have not logged into my hotmail account on a computer in years only have it on my phone to setup craigslist ads, Redbox rentals and small stuff like that and use gmail for important stuff. I dont have any Pirated apps or anything just normal stuff 12 or so games and 15 or so other market apps.
Same thing happened to my hotmail a while back. I changed my password and it solved the problem.

Unless you login to hotmail from your phone's browser, there is no way one of these apps could get your hotmail info.
i swear, i dont know why i take peoples opinions so damn seriously around here...but for the sake of my sanity and the general level of competence of reading and having accurate postings with good conclusions here i go again.
there were a handful or legitimate applications on the market than were infected.
i already changed my email passwords and it ddint help
when i formatted/re flashed rom...it stopped
i later received some notification of some market tool that Google automatically installed and ran and "fixed the issue"
i received an email from Google telling me about a phone tied to my gmail account may have been infected, but i already solved my issue my self, so their fix didn't apply.
how the hell can you people some how twist this into "op is dumb, or stupid"?

When in mail, hit the "settings" button, the soft-touch button next to the middle one, when the settings menu pop-up, hit "more" and then go to "Account settings", in the "email check frequency", you can set to every 5 minutes.
I don't think that's what he wants. Checking every 5 minutes means the email app asks the server if there are new mails. He wants to use the push method of googlemail. With this method the server should tell the app there is a new mail without asking before. This is the technic blackberry uses.
It's just like SMS. These technic consumes less power and causes lower traffic.

Then probably an activesync issue and not really a Note-related issue? Should probably bring it up with the app developers. I was assuming he meant the stock Email app that came with the Note.
I have found all emails to be very slow on my new Samsung Note. Whether it be Yahoo or Gmail. At the moment my Gmail says "Your Email will appear shortly". Waited for 5 minutes and still no email.
Yahoo and Mac emails on Note are also very slow to load. On my iPhone 4 on the other hand are very very fast and load instantly.
Tried the Samsung email app. Even the minimum 5 minute interval was annoying.
Returned to the gmail app and get mail instantaneously. Not a necessity, but quite convenient.
Go to the Market and get an app called: Microsoft + Seven, this is the official Microsoft Android mail application. This will do everything you want from the Exchange but much better. Exchange push is flawed from the server side.
I have both installed while + Seven fetches instantly the Exchange sometimes fails to do so.

That application has so many bad reviews on it.
Is there any updates on why emails are slow to load on the Samsung Note? On my iPhone 4 and Blackberry Bold 9900 emails download very fast with pretty much no waiting while with this Samsung Note it seems like it takes ages to download Yahoo and MAC emails.
How did you setup your gmail through the stock email client? IMAP or exchange?
As for push mail service, my company exchange emails are pushed out instantly without any issues exception of no new email notifications if the email app is open

I agree with the above. The push notifications are in my experience temperamental. Sometimes I get push for my e-mails, facebook and other times there is a very long delay and sometimes I have to open the application before anything shows up.
I've never used blackberry but push used to work nearly flawlessly with my old iphone 3GS (although the iphone e-mail client has many other drawbacks IMHO). I used to get notifications for e-mails instantly.
It is a real shame because I use e-mails a lot for my working life. I have found TouchDown and Moxier Mail to also have flaws and significant battery drain in comparison to stock so don't wish to spend that kind of money on those applications.

I am having similar problems with my Note and push email. It worked flawlessly on my HTC EVO. Both are running Gingerbread.
Agreed
Push email on all android (not just the Note) seems to be lagging. I wish there was a solution. With my Note, if I click in inbox, then it is forced to check email. Push email works great on blackberry and apple.
Any solutions will be greatly appreciated. Will ICS improve this any?
Not having problems with the PUSH in Microsoft Outlook Activesync email and Gmail here. Even Facebook push notifications work like charm and PUSH comes as the emails and/or notifications arrive. I actually observed this while using my laptop.
