Do you mean without a computer or without a Windows machine?
Have you tried z4root?
Well it seems like clockwork mod from the app finally works on the epic so you can use z4root app to root and flash cwm through rom manager and make a backup and viola!

Its not hard at all . Just download it and put the folder in the root of your harddrive .
I'm just having problems with the Samsung drivers and wondering if I have to flash back to stock before I can install drivers.

Yeah, just download it... It's less than 30MB. Make your instal path as short as possible. Try adb devices to test if you have it set up right and it sees your phone.
Ok, I've rooted my phone before but had to reset the phone to all stock because I downloaded an impaled version of angry birds to get the ads off and make the game run smoother....never doin that again lol. Anyway, I tried using the one click root like I did the 1st time but its not findin my phone. I think it says something like it does not recognize adf internally or externally. I downloaded the right samsung driver, put the debugging on, and used the usb cord that came wit the phone and it still doesn't work. I already have CWM (I pushed it on the phone wit odin) and have the stock kernel. now I just need root again

Won't work; I've tried a while back.
It'll just freeze at the "Acquiring Root" part.
So no, you cannot use z4root to root, unfortunately. However, there are various topics on how to do one-click roots on your phone, with all types of computers - Windows, Linux, or even Mac.

Yes, when using the one click roots, you get a lot of options.
One being rooting the phone w/ cwm redirector.
And another that gives you the option to unroot the phone.
So basically, use the same method to unroot it as you do to root it, although choosing the correct option.
Simple as that

I'm pretty sure you cannot root without using a PC. Flashing ROM's is easy but you need to root first obviously..

I stand corrected, z4root is available on the Market and will automatically root and install busybox. XDA link is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
ClockworkMod ROM Manager is also available on the Market and you will be able to flash CWM Recovery from the app itself. After that you are set to go with flashing custom ROMs.
Seems it wont work due to having 2.2.1 firmware and something about the recovery not being 2e

Really not getting any further here as now just found out that i cant get into recovery mode

Are you on di18 or are you on dk28? cuz if your on di18 z4root should work. If your on dk28 than yeah you need a pc with the one click root is so simple. Its just that you do 1 click and it does it thing really fast.

Yeah, Z4Root worked for me on stock Eclair. It just took a couple attempts for it to finally work. The first time it just sat there forever, so I pulled the battery, booted back up, tried again then it worked.
