Turn off phone radio - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to turn off the cell radio so without going into airplane mode?
I can have wifi if I turn it on after airplane mode but I then can't enable wifi calling (because it is in airplane mode)
Basically trying to save battery when not in cell coverage.

Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Network (un-check). I don't think this disables the radio, but it does stop any data/mobile network activity, while WiFi persists.
I'm not sure if this is going to be a HUGE help. I use my Glacier pretty much all day long and even before I was rooted and running Ice Glacier, I could easily get 12 hours out of my phone.
Hope this helps!

You can type *#*#info#*#* into the dialer and in one of the menu choices it gives you the option to turn the radio off towards the bottom of the page. Or if your rooted you could go into terminal and su for root privileges. Then type stop ril-daemon and hit enter. To restart the radio just type start ril-daemon and hit enter. These turn the chip off completely so I'm not sure if wifi still works afterwards or not. Give it a shot though.

Cool thanks. Sounds like a good thing for GScript. I'll give it a shot

Hey thanks for the info on how to use Wifi while in airplane mode. Figured this wasn't possible.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

For those who find this later, the start / stop ril-daemon works perfectly. As grankin01 said it seems to power off the chip so the device behaves a bit like it doesn't have a SIM card at all. Probably uses even less power than airplane mode.
Wifi is unaffected.

Juice defender data toggle

I don't even use the program itself but the data toggle is the only thing I've found that shuts 3g off. I only use 3g on the road if I'm using slacker or gps (went back to stock 2.1 and gps now works... go figure) the rest of the time I keep 4g on and 3g off all time. Saves a ****load of battery you guys should try it if you haven't yet. Anywho ever since the jd ui makeover the toggle doesn't work anymore. Anyone else run into this? Or if there's a different alternative I don't know about? one of those many times 2.2 comes in handy

Switchpro has a 3g toggle that works

You can also disable 3g data directly through the settings in DK28 (2.2) ...
Settings->Wireless and network->Mobile networks->3G Data->uncheck box.
But as you say you went back to 2.1, then that won't exactly work for ya. As I am running DK28, I know you can also do this through the Power Control Plus Widget (by choosing Cellular Data Connection), but unsure if will work with 2.1 as well (I just dont know).

Widgetsoid works as well.
In dk28 you can also toggle 3g by holding the power button, one of the options disables cellular data

I found that the 3g toggle in widgetsoid was kinda glitchy on my phone. I use a program called SMODA Widget and it works great never had any problems on my epic with it.

Applications slow on WiFi, but fast on 3g/2g

I have this weird problem with several applications (moat notably Evermore and Waepedia by Taptu) where the apps run a lot faster on 3g in comparison to WiFi. When I search for a note in Evernote it takes 60-90 seconds for it to be found on WiFi and almost that long to actually pull it up and on 3g it's almost instantaneous. Same with Waepedia searches.
I know the issue is not with the apps, because it happens in several different Alps and across versions. I have also seen the issue in several different ROMs. Does anyone else have the issue? Any ideas what might be going wrong?
Thanks!

I've tried with it on, but that doesn't change anything. Besides, in most cases I am 3 meters away from the WiFi access point and in clear sight of it.

Try using the speedtest.net (or the app) on WiFi, 3G, and another device on the same WiFi network.
EDIT: Are you using the best radio version for the different ROMs you are using, go into the bootloader (the only way I can remember) and see if it says the same radio version as what is recommended in the ROMs thread.

I've tested the speed on both connections - it's a lot faster on Wifi as expected. Radio could be a problem I guess, but I've tried 3 radios already and I am having the problem on both. Do you have Waepedia? Do you have this problem?
i dont have it but im not rooted thou

OK, Taptu has just replied to my bug report saying this is a known issue and they are working on it. I'll write to Evernote again now and see if they might be having the same issue...

Open your wifi, hit menu, then advanced, and you'll see a checkbox for "best wifi performance" (or something like that). You should check/enable this option for better performance (possibly at the risk of higher battery usage though).

[Q] Internet connection fails on all apps? (Full signal) APN? Radio?

INFO: HD2 T-Mobile USA
MOD: HyperDroid-GBX-v12
Kernel: 2.6.32.15_r8.3-geb94bc6
Radio: 2.15.50.14
Problem: All apps lose data connection. Have full signal.
Temporary Solution: Airplane mode toggle. Seems to just reconnect and works fine for a while. Or until the phone goes into standby.
I do have the right APN settings i have checked twice. Even switching to the "simple" APN setting will sometimes fix it. Should I try a different radio? Or am I missing a different step?
Much thanks

I have the same problem, starting around the same time you posted this. Tons of different Roms and Radios haven't fixed anything. I still have to toggle Airplane Mode to get data back up. Any chance you found a solution?
Also have the same problem, internet stops working and I have to toggle airplane mode or restart the phone and it works again. Doesnt happen on WP7.
Does anyone know a fix?
get another rom,had this same prob,I reckon its a fault in rom.
change rom and everything will work, properly, again,is otherwise a nice rom,but this is a rom killer for me.

Hmm hardware issue?
I am able to use the app: Airplane Mode Wifi to make it work.
What rom u on?
I'm on SRF1.2 with EF02 radio. Initially I was not able to enable wifi in airplane mode. However, I installed the app while on vacation, and now I am able to enable wifi in airplane mode, even when I haven't run the app at all.
I'm stock eh06
But that shouldn't matter as I've been using wifi like that even on eclair
you should make a nandroid and flash a different rom and then turn airplane mode on and te toggle wifi

Well weird now that after installing the app it seems to be working without the app
I don't know whats up but it seems to work now
Syndicate 1.1.0
Changes the wifi icon to "on" in the notification pulldown.
Does not enable wifi.
I can, after going into airplaine mode I have to re-enable wifi if I was on wifi before switching.
EC05OCE v3/ missing v4
Without the app, only stock roms would allow me to enable wifi while in airplane mode. With the app, i've been able to get it to work with any rom/kernel..

Hmm, weird same result with the app it works fine and whats nice about the app is that u can have wifi on and turn on airplane mode without disabling the wifi.
i just think its weird that it works for some people on custom roms without the app and some it doesn't.
Mine works just fine. No app needed. After putting into Flight Mode, hit wifi and up it comes. I am on EG22 Bonsai v5 B14 currently.
It does knock you off if you are on wifi and hit flight mode but as mentioned before just hit wifi again and it is on.
Just tried it earlier wifi won't come with airplane mode on toggle button says its on but no signal indicator srf1.2
And I just wiped my modem memory but maybe I will do a nandroid and see if that changes

Problems with data on ICS

I am having problems with data when I use ICS builds. Before I started using Android I could use data anywhere on W6.5 and it worked on GB as well, but I much prefer ICS. However, I can only get data in some places and not others. At home it tends to be fine but at work I can't get anything, it just won't connect but with W6.5/GB it will. I am on Virgin Media who use T-Mobile/Orange.
I've tried several ICS builds (NativeSD), using PPP and changing the APN, so I'm abit stumped as to what the issue may be. Most of the time I use wifi but I need data at work and when I go away.
Any ideas or suggestions that I could try?
Although your problem seems to be different, try to switch on airplane mode on then off. (If on CLK.)

I'm not on NAND but NativeSD and boot using Haret.
I have just been playing with the settings at work and changed the network from auto to Virgin and data came on but only for a minute and then I lost it. Turning to airplane mode and back again worked but only for another minute and then I'll lose the connection again.
Does that help highlight what the issue might be? Although I'm confused as to why it worked at home with the network set to auto.
This is a long shot, but it may be related to 3g/2g preference. Maybe for some reason it is set to three g preferred and you don't have it at home. Im not home now, you can search for it or wait until I get back home.

EDIT: Actually, I got home as well as lazier. Please search for it and try it.
Edit - Sorted it hopefully, I turned data roaming on and it's working!
