Dust under screen - Droid 2 General

I dont know if this has been mentioned before...Im sure it has. I have the dreaded dust under screen issue. Lots of it. Before anyone tries to go and blow their screens out with canned air. Don't. It doesnt work. You can try and take it to the Verizon store and talk to them about how this is a manufacturing defect, how does dust get under the screen. Long story short, they are sending me another phone...
I have gone through 2 Droid Eris's and this will be my second Droid 2. Im about tired of the defects that come with these phones. My wife has a Droid Incredible, and it has no issues whatsoever. I dont know what to do with this stuff. Thoughts are welcomed...thanks folks.

well when i had my eris i knew how to take it apart and reassemble it so i cleaned it out when that would happen but with the D2 i havent had that problem :\

I find it strange that the seal is bad. Oh well another one is on the way
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App

Well
Droid Eris=HTC
Droid 2=Motorola
So its not a specific manufacturer issue...its just a result of mass manufacturing products.

By the way I wanted to add to this topic that because of this topic the whole "dust under the screen" was in the back of my mind to the point where I had a dream and had a huge dust bunny under my screen LOL

I got the new one in today....turns out the screen on the left hand side of my original Droid 2 was actually pushed up to the side like it had been removed. It was not pushed down where the edge of the phone was the border. this might have been the cause of the issue.

CDMA Hero Bugs and Manufacturer Defects

I'm starting this thread as a central database for CDMA Hero owners to share defects and bugs in Hardware and Software.
My apologies if this has been addressed else-where.
Found with my Girlfriend's and my "with Google" Heros that we both have a noticeable amount of dust under the screen (glass). I thought this was addressed with rev. 2 of the phone?
Anyone one else with the same issue?
paint on case is VERY easy to chip...
I agree the finish seems a little delicate. I've been using a cheap hard plastic case since I got mine in dec. Helps alot with wear and tear, and isn't too bulky or hard to get out of my pocket.
i agree with the paint issue.
my end button is totally red not silver and red
I had a dust issue with my first (unbranded).
The first thing I did with my replacement (with google) hero was to apply an invisible shield to it. I have not noticed any dust under the screen whatsoever.
Also, although it isn't exactly pretty, I found while applying the invisible shield that it did not cover the gap between screen and button pad. As a quick fix to this I cut a thin piece of invisible shield material that was left over and applied it over the crack/screen protector/button pad protector. Just for some extra protection.
For shocks, I have the phone in the HTC silicone case. My phone has taken a number of falls/skids across the ground and stuff and this combo has protected it completely.
Edit:
Almost forgot, my original also seemed to develop a wear mark on the metal button pad finish. It was as if a part of the layer had rubbed off and tarnished in a circular pattern.
about the dust under the screen...
i contacted htc about before. the person who i emailed replied to me saying that htc has a permanent fix for the problem, so you can send it in and they'll replace/clean the screen and apply some fix to it. catch is, you have to pay for S&H and you'll go without a phone for a bit

I have a ridiculous amount of dust in the lower left hand corner of my screen... so much so that part of the screen isn't visible anymore. Do you think Sprint would just let me exchange it for a new one? Or would I still have to go through HTC?

well i e-mailed htc about this twice. the first time they said that if the dust got bad enough, i could send it to HTC and they'd repair it. they also said this:
I understand how frustrating it can be for dust to collect under the screen of your device. We have recently learned that Sprint has a process in place to resolve this issue. Please contact Sprint for the location of your nearest Sprint Service and Repair facility. They are equipped to clean your device, and in doing so will be able to keep the issue from recurring in the future. I apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced.

which pretty much means that the sprint store should be able to repair it for free.

That's great to hear! Nice to know it's not like my Mogul was. They just kept giving me broken phones until I bought my hero....
I had heard about the dust problem before, and was glad that I didn't have that problem yet... After reading this thread, I decided to look again.... Now I do have dust in the bottom right
It seems to me that the problem is dust entering between the keypad and the screen, and then getting up underneath of the digitizer which doesn't seem to be against the LCD, which is strange, I think. Most handhelds I've taken apart have the digitizer glued around the edges directly to the LCD. Thank god that HTC and Sprint are actually addressing this problem. If someone does know how and where this seal is applied, I'd love to know. I might be taking mine back before too long, and I always would like to know what they're going to do beforehand.

OMG i loved the mogul till I realized the CPU was slow the whole thing was slow and in my 2 years i went through 8 of them. That was the best money ever spent on TEP
Seriously you guys should have no problem exchanging that phone in warranty without TEP IF you take it to the shop and they cant resolve your dust issue they will ship you a remanufactured phone.

This is 100% inaccurate. I'm a Sprint tech and there is no process in place for repairing Hero's with dust in the screen. Sure I can take your phone apart and blow the dust out, but it will come back.

The stock roms sucks.
But seriously, same as everyone else
-Dust under screen
-Button paint chipping off
At least it isn't near as bad as the Touch Pro. My buddy and I both had one; he still has his... His volume buttons literally fell off, and all of the chrome stripping is held on with scotch tape. The sliding screen has a slight swivel to it. And, thanks to Microsoft, all of his texts are from 1016.
Actually, I'm considering taking my Hero apart and trying to figure out a fix on my own. I think I'll wait just a little longer... just to make sure nothing fails and I can't take it back. Or, is there anywhere I can buy those black stickers for the screw-heads?
I'm surprised none of you guys have seen this yet.

Interesting, I loved my Touch Pro, the only flaking or issues with the aesthetics I had were from where it met pavement once...there's also a .cab file your friend can download that will fix the date issue...I'd post a link but I'm not sure of XDA's linking policies to other sites, just google ".cab fix for touch pro sms date," it's one of the first results.
As far as bugs and manufacturer defects with my Hero go, I've had the phone for a little over a month now and haven't anything to report...it does lag a little at times but I've yet to find a rooting process that works for my Hero for whatever reason, it's the newest version with the "with Google" branding. The "one touch root" or whatever it was titled from unlockr didn't work, nor did the one I found on android forums.
I didn't get stuck in a bootloader or anything for either process, it's simply that neither one had any affect; I did follow both process to a "T." I'll get around to trying the tutorial I found on here (XDA) one day when I have time, although I must say, I kind of prefer the hacks and tricks of WinMo at this point.

same, i just removed the foil completely. just have a red button now.

I finally got the dust issue along with peelling

so to be honest i used to read post about people *****ing about dust getting under their screen and i would just laugh because i was like "dust under the screen' wtf" but now i see what everyone is *****ing about, i have tons of dust under my screen now and when its in like the text app or something that has alot of white background, it looks really bad, im pissed. also my stupid button started peeling. i took my insurance off because i was going to get the evo so i felt i didnt need it, what should i do, can i just walk into a sprint store and say hey i need my dust cleaned, will they even touch it with no insurance. COuld i say this is a known issue and i want it done. lol
Believe they just noted this as an issue last Friday. However, your lack of insurance could be a problem depending on the condition of your phone.
I went through 3 phones within the first 2 days till i finally got one with no dead pixels and dust. I now have dust in the bottom left of the screen and the sticker is peeling off the power button. It isn't to the point where it bothers me enough to spend 2 hours at a sprint store and we will see if it gets to that point before my 1 year is up and I move on to the Evo.
Ya my replacement for my dusty hero. is now showing dust.lol this is freaking stupid...When it gets worse i will take it in and be like wtf.... cant u guys fix this.. I love my hero but hate the dust..
http://www.amazon.com/Body-Glove-Elements-Snap-Sprint/dp/B002YKABMG
This is the case I've been using and I haven't had any dust issues... I've done tiling with grout and still haven't gotten any dust under my phone.
I hope I don't get this issue as well, as it may become an issue into the future, regardless of what casing you choose to use your phone will (I'm glad I opted for the inurance, either way)

Dust under screen!

Hey all. Just got my desire hd today from carphone warehouse. I love this handset! Best phone I've ever had by a country mile! Only problem is its got something trapped inbetween the screen and digitizer. Looks like dust or a small shard of metal. Really disappointed. I know the desire had this problem but just wanted to know if anyone else has this problem with their hd. It's really annoying as I can't take my eyes of it when using the phone, especially when the screen is on a white background. What do you think peeps, should I return it? , after all I've got it for 2 years.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
definitely take it back and get a fresh one, if they don't have any in stock I guess you'll have to be patient, but you can't accept faulty goods.
Yeah, that was my thoughts too. Just don't want to come across ocd! . Love the phone but build quality on these things should be better considering the price of them. Used a hero for the last 18 months and never had any screen issues.

Is it possible to see some pics of that dust under the glass?
Thanks!
BUMP......
Hey guys. Seems most of the posts were deleted during the "clean up". I contacted the mod to get this thread back but it appears half of it is missing. Anyway got my replacement today and It's perfect. Apart from all the known issues!
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
I got this issue either, and I can't keep my eyes off it!
I propably going back to the shop with it to get a new one, because I just got it a day.
But i'm afraid that they won't see it, because my mother can't see it either.
So maybe I need to ignore it, but will be hard for me
One of the biggest failures of the original Desire in my opinion was the dust that got in under the screen. For an example of the one I sent back with this problem have a look here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTF0fFN5Y60
Now I would HOPE that HTC have learned from this and rectified the problem but I have just been looking at the ads on eBay and noticed this in one of the item descriptions:
"The unit i have at the moment has 1 speck of dust under the screen and i am receiving a replacement unit this week, so the one you will be buying will be brand new"
Seems with this and the experiences of users here that HTC have not resolved this problem after all. A HUGE disappointment as there is no way I could put up with this once I know the dust is there even if it's only visible in certain lighting conditions!
I got one small black dot of dust under my glass. Thought it was a dead pixel at first, but its too high for that upon examination.
May take it back since I paid a lot of money for it.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
same i also have just 1 speck at the top right corner, not sure if ill bother replacing, but i do also have a dead pixel at the bottom right corner so its defintely tempting..
I have had many HTC devices over the years and a few have had problems with dust ingress. especially my topaz and c500 where very bad.
The problem was bad sealing around the volume rocker, is this the same problem? or maybe dust has been induced during manufacture of phone?
well mine had dust under the screen from straight out of the box and it wasn't anywhere near the volume rocker

i had the same experience. bought a desire z and after a few weeks a lot of dust has accumulated on the top part of the scree. so i sold it and got a desire hd, im not sure if there were two speck of dusts on top of the screen but now there are. im trying to stop being an oc and fidgeting about these things but i am quite disappointed. had 5 htc phones and this is the first time i experienced this. hopefully it wont get worse.

I'm the same way. I have the smallest piece of dust you could ever see (like half of a pixel). It's actually opposite the volume buttons, and right on the edge where if it was one pixel over to the right more, it would be off the visible screen. You can't even notice it unless you have a pure white background, but I know it's there, and it annoys me. Also after three months with my DHD I just noticed when the screen is on, and I look at the black boarder around the screen (I have to sort of angle it in the light), the right side seems to be off just a bit (there is more screen boarder in between the right side of the screen and the outer black boarder than there is on the left). Like the alignment of the under screen is tilted a bit, but when I have horizontal or vertical lines on the screen, they all line up perfect, and none are cut off like what my eyes would think they would be, so it seems like an optical illusion. Just me and my OCD.

To anyone who bought a new Epic within the past month

Do you guys have the issue of the screen being loose at all? Reason I'm asking is because I'm hoping to get a new one as a replacement.
When the Epic first came out the forum was flooded with people who had the issue but lately that doesn't really seem to be the case. Maybe it was fixed in production like HTC fixed the glass separation problem with the EVO.

The actual glass is loose?
I just got my third one in the month since I moved from the moment.
The first one the screen wasn't and wouldn't go into the phone, there was one corner and half the side that would not seat down to where it should be. The second had a nice one pixel wide line right down the middle of the screen. And my third and current one is perfect in every sense of the word!
Both of my other ones you could separate the screen and the keyboard for a little gap that annoyed the hell out of me. My current one is seriously rock solid!
So from my experience I'd definitely say go for it and try to get a new one. I was doubting if the epic was right for me, but my latest one changed my mind completely!
No not the actual glass but the whole top half of the phone that slides out.
But yea I see a lot of people saying their newew ones are more solid so that's good.

My wife and I just got ours last month and we have had no problems with ours. We love em. You shouldn't have a problem with a new order, but you never know.
Sent from my shoe, I mean....Epic shoe... I mean Samsung Epic!
I've had mine since the first week, and yes, its loose, but only as much as any other slider I've had. I don't think it has gotten any "worse"... I had a cheapo 2 pc. Best buy hard case on it, and with that it was perfectly solid. The 'action' of the slide, the spring assist of it, is just as good as new too. If yours is that horrible, take it back for sure... I just accept that sliders do that, as long as it doesn't butt-dial from slight opening, I'm ok.
The first one I got on launch day had separation of the glass to the frame. Made clicking noises after I turned off all the clicks and hapatic feedback ****. The 2nd and 3rd Epic's I had, have been rock solid.
i got my epic in october and since then its loose now i guess its normal from normal use because its a slider...my cousin got his last month and his is loose too now.
I got myne on release day and have no problems at all mybe jus a little loose keyboard but I don't use it much so I don't care

The issue of loose or wobbly screens is a known one. I have had to replace my Epic twice due to that reason. So, when I was getting the one I have now, I asked the sales rep. to let me check if the screen was wobbly or not, before he activated it. When you pay so much for such devices, there shouldn't be any margin for imperfection. You should get your phone replaced.

Broken screen

Hey yall nothing special but I reancently drop my phone 1 too many time and crack the screen. Does anyone happen to know what phone I get as a replacement from assurion. I've heard people geting the EVO 3d. I have the white version of the EVO now and seems so slipery when I pull it out of my pocket. Also anything special I should do I had it, but i already flash it back to stock non rooted.

You may get an Evo as a replacement; the 3D if they're out of stock.
Evo4g is what you get
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
If it's slippery, get a case.
I would suggest buying an otterbox for your new phone either way. It might be expensive but ive had my evo since release and my brother (ever since I got the case) thought it would be funny to show everyone who saw it and says "look! its indestructable" :\ Ass! You might also find that you can actually salvage it by buying a new lcd screen and digitizer glass for under 70.00 on ebay! just tell your carrier you lost it! you pay the same premium regaurdless if you have insurance! then you can turn it around and sell it as refurbished! Keep in mind some skill and technical knowlege of the EVO might be required along with tools if it is not included!
What's crazy is, my wife's Evo has had two cracked screens and every time we took them to the Sprint stores, they only charged us 25 dollars for a replacement Evo (Just the body, no battery/case/sd card/accessories). Are they not doing this anymore?
I've head my screen replaced countless times by sprint (with root) for free.
Edit: not to mention speakers replaced, bezel, camera lenses. All free. Never unrooted my phone, ever. Same root from day after launch.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
How many *is* countless?
I'm not trying to be flip, I think it's an important point (only semi-related to the OP, but definitely something that occurred to me lately) : if you're having to replace that many things on your phone, that doesn't reflect well on the build quality of the phone.
My observation, from this and other remarks on XDA, as well as my own experience (below) is that Evo's tend to break a lot. Probably less than other brands, and possibly less than other HTC phones, but probably more than certain other phones also (dare I mention the iPhone or is that just going to get me banned on XDA?)
On my original Evo, which I had less than a year, I had to replace the camera lens cover, the internal ear piece speaker (not the speakerphone speaker) and the digitizer. The last one I took to a Sprint store - 35 bucks was pretty reasonable, but they don't just replace a digitizer, they also swap out a whole assembly from some other returned phone including someone else's glass, LCD, and bezel. The other two jobs I did myself using parts I got on Ebay. I thought I did a good job too until, a few months after I did the speaker, the screen started acting funny and I realized I had screwed it together oh-so-slightly wrong and torqued the motherboard just a little. The problem got progressively worse and I finally had to buy a replacement Evo on Ebay. So much for saving a buck going the DIY route.
And those are just the problems I was able to solve. I also had to live with the famous crack in the bezel near the volume button, various dings in the relatively soft plastic of the bezel, and a down-volume button that just stopped working (too much use in recovery sessions I guess? )
Evo's *feel* pretty solid, and they're definitely not cheap plastic toys, but I don't remember having these problems with the fruit flavored phone I used to have.

just remeber guys/gals I did say you would have to have the specifications. tourque specs is a large portion of this BEFORE you finish your work. This is a highly complicated peice of technology and any wrong tweeking might cause you to screw up your phone. I suggest addiquate research before you attempt any repairs to your phone Also, there have been some instances where the carrier WILL NOT work on your phone if they deam that you have voided the warrenty. Well, yes, it is a calculated risk. The old rule applies : don't gamble if you can't afford to lose.
To me, it's just a phone, so I gambled (and lost). I survived just fine, but I agree that not everyone would/should make the same choice.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
OK. So it wasn't countless.
But
3 screen (2 my fault and 1 the tech installed wrong - about to go for a 4th screen cuz I recently dropped and cracked it again, but this time it's not shattered)
2 or 3 external speakers
2 cam lens covers
And 1 badly dinged bezel (that I didn't even ask for, they did it while replacing the screen)
Never had to pay a dime.
I think the build quality is great. Maybe they could use a better speaker, but I think I was using a kernel with audio gains when it blew (i.e. my fault).
Busted screens were obviously my fault.
And HTC has GOT to find a way to protect camera lenses better. I had camera scratches on my HTC diamond, too, but all the Evo and newer HTCs have an even less protected lens.
I never unrooted. I usually try to make it look sorta stock, though. But the last time I brought it in with ICS, and even had ROM toolbox right on my homescreen lol
