Walmart Family Mobile - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I think this is the best forum section to post this in but feel free to move this post if not
I've done some extensive searching and not quite finding the correct results on this issue so here it goes ...
I recently started a new account with Walmarts Family Mobile powered by tmobile (i know not a lot of people know about this service)
I am running a tmobile usa hd2 with chuckys Rom and Android 2.2 (mdjfroyosense-=revolution=-)
I got some apn settings from a service rep with WFM and put them in and all a sudden my phone went crazy rapidly downloading an mms and within like 5 seconds tried and failed to download about 10 times then finally downloaded .. I tried to tweak the settings and now mms just don't work period .. also my data is only 2g even tho the theory OS that if u use a 3g tmobile device it'll do 3g on WFM cus of the same radio frequency and towers and such (their qlickxt runs 3g)
So the question is, has anyone tried this new service provider? With hacked hd2? What kind of apn settings do you use? And is it one apn for mms and data? Or separate, because the mms actually runs from your data plan with this service... and any ideas on 3g?
Thanks

So this thread is a question thread? If so then this is clearly not the "best forum section to post this in" because we have a dedicated forum for HD2 Android related questions.
From now on, please think before you post a thread about which forum really is best.
General conversation goes in General Discussion. Questions go in Q&A. Development threads go in Development. It's very easy to post in the correct forums and it seriously cuts back on the amount of work that I have to do when users just post where they should.
Please post in the correct section from now on. Please note that I'm not intentionally trying to sound like a jerk. It just gets kinda frustrating when all I do all day long on my day off from work, on New Years Eve, is move threads to the correct forum.
THREAD MOVED.

lol, you guys are some serious retards.
learn how to post a topic ffs and also stop calling mod a jerk simply because hes honest enough to say hes sick of idiots like you to.
I completley agree and would be pissed of If I was a mod, hell im pissed of as a user as im sick of seeing **** in wrong place or retards asking such n00b questions when there is clearly a abundance of information and guides and especially when the question is a FAQ.
Posting stuff wrong sections just clutters place up and mods are the ones who have to clean it up.

Ok soo for those who think they are some kind of "internet veteran" and can talk to people any way they want. I wanna let you know ranting about me and me replying to it is all off topic .. I know other people will be asking similar questions and I have searched a lot for it and get waay unrelated results so anyone who has a valid suggestion to help the community pls feel free to comment (on topic)

What are your current APN settings?
Have you tried to use TMOUS settings?
I'm not on Wal-Mart's plan but I'd like to know if they use different servers.

My search results told me to just use tmobiles apn and it worked briefly than stopped soo I asked a family mobile rep what they are and he gave me some other ones ill post in a bit .. but they only seem to be working for data ... there seems to be no clarification with new service yet

Still need to get 3g working on edge I can barely get mobile pages to load... mms kinda working .. on tmobile apn right now

I use a TMOB branded HD2 on Walmart Family Mobile. I use the stock WM6.5 ROM (most current third generation) that is flawless. BAttery life is amazing with the newest ROM and I have yet to find a bug. Have 70% left after 8 hours with light use. I also run Android off the SD card daily for surfing and aps. I didn't have to unlock my phone or change any settings. Everything just works if you use a Tmobile device.
Love the service!!! Saving $40 per month over Sprint. I use wifi most of the time but even when I use 3G it never amounts to more than $0.25 per day as long as I don't stream music.

So your apn is the same as with tmobile and your getting 3g in Android? Cus I wont touch wm with a ten foot stick ...

I'm no wallyworld employee, but after looking at the website for all of 5 seconds the pages indicates its powered by t-mobile. So it stands that all tmobile APNs would work IMO.

I also have the single plan for $45 a month but really gets me is that, I had the 500mb webpak and i use it when i watched netflix.....afterwards I've been watching movies and online downloading and everything at no charge, at least it seems that way. I'm using MIUI 1.7.2.2 and the only thing I think is blocked on my plan is picture messages. I thought it was the mms settings but I switched it to WP7 and the same thing happened. Still this is a good plan with 3g function and i sent this on a laptop using my mobile hotspot.

Question

would it be possible to boot chromium os instead of ubuntu, i know it may sounds silly because why would you want to use chromium? but i think it would be pretty interesting to see how fast it boots on a mobile device and also if you wanted to browse the net fast and have quick startup times then it would be the way to go
I was actually just browsing on some chrome os info and was wondering the same thing. if we can boon linux... can we possibly boot chromium ?
Isnt it a fully online OS? What for ppl without dataplan?
lol, screw people without a data plan. I see no reason to ever get a smartphone, that has all these many features, and never get a data plan.
seriously, what is the point? you cant use any features unless you are connected to wifi. not everywhere is there wifi. and if there is, most of the time its not an open network, and if it is an open network, i hope that there is someone there packet sniffing and catching your info for being cheap and not getting a data plan.
bottom line, get a data plan. t-mobile has an unlimited plan as do most others. i've used 10 gigs in a month and no cut off, so that is plenty for ANYONE.
stop buying bottled water and drink tap, and you can afford the data plan.
i apologize for the rant.
Lol you don't know what you are talking about. Over here it costs me 20 euro extra per month so please stfu. And next time be nicer.. not all countries offer 3g almost for free!

i have to kinda agree with the data plan post, altho it wasnt nicely put he is kinda ryt, but also i agree with you, not everyone can afford the extra money and not evrywhere in the world has brillian 3g coverage but tbh if u dont hav a data plan then u dotn install chrome os simple as, and even if u did get it and dont have a data plan its not lik its a rom, leave it on your sd card then boot when your around wifi? i just thought itd b a nice idea to have a web browsing device that boots almost instantly, well atleast hopefully it wud. i know yeh im gna get comments lik "we do have web browsing devices just use the built in browser on android" or "use the hd2 winmo browser" but its just a question and an idea.
if anyone who reads this is interested and maybe wants to giv it a go at making chrome work on the hd2 then there are already some precompiled builds called chrome flow, search for it on google unless u alredi know what im talking about.

HTC evo on straight talk

okay so here is my question.
lets just say i got straight talk to activate my evo (no more info needed use you imagination)
1. would the data work
- i know i would have to get a verizion prl there is some on this forum.
would those prls work?
- i know verizion uses a-keys to authenticate the phone would *22890 work?
2. does sprint use a-keys?
3. i know that the radios are compatiable to use verizions towers.
4. would i need to change the spc to 000000?
- as i know that all verizion phones use that spc but does straight talk?
5does straight talk have data/mms format like [email protected]
any insight would be helpful?
im not stuck on straight talk open to boost virgin mobile im mostly wanting data
Sorry to bump an old thread but I've been playing with such things recently myself... Any luck?
Well I run my EVO on cricket, it works fine if data is all your after.

I appreciate the reply. I'm trying to find a service (preferably pre-paid) that uses Verizon with unlimited talk/data at a decent price. I'm moving where they have the only towers. Moved 5x (4 efts and many phones) since '03 and this sign a contract, buy a phone, repeat stuff stinks.

You have any links? I have pagplus now but would rather be on straight talk.
I had my evo on straight talk but no luck with the data settings. Scoured the internet forever. Also was unable to read settings from straight talk phones using cdma workshop or qpst because of the USB lock. A passcode is required on the phones themselves for service programming.
If you have anything on this I would appreciate it!

[Q] Questions about Droid X on Metro PCS

I know this question has been asked plenty of times before but I have some questions that I just cannot get a straight answer to. XDA came through for me with my HD2 and I hope I can get some guideance again.
Backstory....I got my HD2 all androided up with 2.2, ran up to my local "Simple Mobile" Store (Im sure most of you know, simple mobile is pretty much T-Mobile in disguise) and I got my phone activated. Then to smah my dreams, I find out I cant get signal at all within 10miles of my house. Although the phone is amazing when it does have signal.
So now, Im Looking into going back to MetroPCS because I have full signal with them every where I go, and Im looking at the Droid-X as my next phone porting Victim. However I cannot seem to find one solid guide on getting everything working properly. Some guides say everything but apps work, some say apps work but no mms, Is there one rock solid guide out there that will cover all aspects? Obviously I would like my phone to act just as it would on VZW, or as close as I can get. Secondly, Will I beable to get 3G or not? Im pretty sure MetroPCS does not have 3G(Atleast in Daytona Beach, FL), but some people keep saying they do. Lastly, Since im pretty sure that the answer to the last question will be a big fat NO, what kinds of internet speeds can I expect with Metro's network? Will apps like Pandora and Youtube Work? If so I know they will be slow, but just how slow are we talking?
Also, as a side question, are there any 4G LTE phones that can be ported over from verizon yet? Metro doesnt have the best selection of phones.
Thank you to anyone who can shed some light on this for me. Im definately not a noob, but I'm sure as hell no expert either.
Sorry for being so wordy with my question
Edit: Also I have a friend willing to sell me a EVO for $100, Is it possible to get that phone working aswell, apps and all?
for droid x:

for evo:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=704161
or
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=796257
just got these from a quick google search. there are lots of other guides
I have actually Seen the Guide for the droid X, and the first one you posted for the EVO. However I haven't see the second EVO guide that you posted, so thank you for that one, that answered the EVO question.
My only other question is; What (if any) apps Will not function on metropcs? I do not live in a EVDO market so I wont have 3G. Will apps like Pandora, Youtube, and google maps work? and if they do what kind of experiences have peole had with them, are they tolerable, or are they so slow that their barely usable?

Do you think it will even be worth it?
While I myself am a total VZW Fanboy, if you have constant access to WiFi (college campus), it wouldn't be so bad.
Personally, the hassle isn't worth it for me and I'd rather pay the premium for a reliable network, but for others, maybe not .
Interestingly enough I am seriously considering going to VZW. However I know they are going to require a deposit from me, but it's almost worth it for me. On a side note, this is for me and my wife, so if i do end up biting the bullet and going with VZW do you know if it would be one deposit for the whole account, or one deposit per line? ATT wanted $500 per line.
But in the mean time im still stuck with metro, and I have 25Mb/s internet at my house so im covers there, but unfortunately no WiFi at work.
I am currently using droid x on metro. With it upgraded to leaked gingerbread everything works except picture messages which can work but is a little buggy. You can follow the guid at Howard forums for flashing. You do not need U2LN or AUTOSTAT files at all with gingerbread and since metro dos not use a proxy anymore....

Search!
This topic has been covered several times over several months!
There has to be a file that stores tethering info and somehow submits it to AT&T. Is there a way of "freezing" anything collects data on our phones? I honestly think it's BS that I need a tethering plan for the lapdock....It's not like it's a seperate computer. I upgraded my sons line when I bought the Atrix and lapdock and then moved the Atrix to my number and dropped his 4gig tether plan to the 2 gig plan. (I didn't want to lose my unlimited..LOL)

Click the link before telling someone to search - this is a NEW notice from AT&T, posted today, that says they're going to start kicking people off their unlimited plans if they tether "illegally" (what a load of BS).... This is new and relevant, and I just bumped the other thread discussing this because of it's importance!
I don't think you have to worry about this on an android phone. I've never heard or read anywhere where an android user has been contacted by at&t. It mainly applies to iphone and how iphone users can tether using various apps. Android has its own internal routing and assigns ip addresses like a dhcp server where as an iphone (I think) may pull ipaddresses off att's network.

A buddy of mine got a letter and it was because he was using the MyWi app. My wife uses is very rarely if the kids want to download an app from the app store. I think since iOS 4.?, there might something that recognizes when the phone is tethering and how much data was used during that time frame. You can use your phone for an hour from 3-4pm and look at your data usage the next day and your phone notifies AT&T in the middle of the night how much data was used that day... shows up as internet/media net on the bill.
The article is in regards to tethering apps not APN mods and even the article talks about the iphone not android. We seem to be safe for now

All the people who received letters from the other thread were iphone users... If you read the other thread you'll even see where several people told them to stop talking about iphones issues in an android forum. Unless your using an app that isn't baked into the os to share your wifi connection, I honestly don't think you have to worry about this as the method of "sharing" is different from ios.
This thread should be locked down as there is already a continuous one going (duplicate thread).

You need an att tethering plan to use webtop.... I don't know what you are talking about. There is a reason why xda is becoming more and more irrelevant as time goes on and developers are choosing a different website. It's people like you guys who just need to one up other posters who are causing this. There are some great people on here, then there are you guys. That's the reason why the rootzwiki is becoming the new standard. Oh and I should sell my atrix cause I asked a question about webtop? That clearly means I have no idea what I'm doing right? I have read that webtop should work when you are on wifi, but that's just what I've heard since I don't use it. If you're trying to use it while on AT&T's data network then, yes, you need tethering but there are tethering and webtop hacks galore in the "noob" thread that is stickied at the top of the "General" forum.

Also, try not to take anything personally. This is an internet forum, just let it roll off your back.
Just looked over the sticky and it has a link to a cwm installable webtop file that I already have. Nothing about disabling att from verifying the tethering plan required to use the webtop on 3G. Webtop works fine on wifi... And before gingerbread, there used to be a way to get it to work without a tethering plan. That is why I asked this "n00b" question that nobody seems to have an answer for.

Have you tried the "Entitlement" mod (enabling tethering)? It should be the one right above or below the Webtop link.

No problem, hope you find something that works. Like I've said, I don't use it so I don't know what would actually work.
Also, like I've said, you can't take things personally on the internet, but if I can give some advice. Try to be more descriptive in your comments especially when starting an entire thread. Include things like what "mods" you have already used, and maybe include what ROM you're using and what resources you have already searched through for answers, you could even go as far as describing the steps you are using when encountering the issue. All of this helps the rest of us help you. Your original post "looks" like a "noob" question and that's like blood in the water for the sharks.

OP asked a valid question and didn't deserve to be noob-bashed. I have the same issue. I have done the "entitlement" hack using the SQLLite Editor to set the "Entitlement Check" field to "0", and I am able to use my Atrix as a mobile hotspot without a tethering plan.
However, when I attempt to use Firefox on the Lapdock while connected via 3G (WiFi off), a popup appears saying "Verifying AT&T account status for webtop...". Then, after a few seconds, it fails and another dialog pops up saying "The Firefox browser requires a Wi-Fi connection or appropriate data plan. Please use Wi-Fi or call AT&T Customer Service at 1-800-331-0500 to add the appropriate data plan to your account"
Any help would be appreciated.
Try this and see if it works. Make sure you have done the entitlement hack and while connected to the webtop turn on the mobile hotspot on your phone and then go into your networks and choose the tether apn.
I tried something in that nature and was browsing firefox on my phones data. I'll try again in the morning and see if that's what I did.

Question.
Is it considered tethering if instead of using the full browser firefox, that requires a tethering plan, to instead use a browser (such as Dolphin HD) INSIDE of the phone module app on the webtop... since it's actually using your phone's apps instead of firefox?
just a thought.

Thanks dmbrown81, that totally worked! I still get the nagging messages from the Webtop about needing a tethering plan, but if I just turn on WiFi Tethering while the phone is docked, Firefox will work fine! Brilliant!

Obviously that would never be detected, but ATT does consider it tethering. Total BS if you ask me, all the doc is is an external screen/keyboard/pad/battery, it is in no way a seperate system.
The odd thing is that while using a StarHub prepaid sim in Singapore on my unlocked ATT Atrix it doesn't do that check, only when I use my ATT sim.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
Thanks that solution works
Thanks everyone for suggesting the "hotspot" trip. I am curious as to why this needs to be done is we are using the entitlement hack. Does anyone know why this is or is the just the way to get around having to pay twice for data? Also, have you guys noticed a big hit in your battery life when using the hotspot tethering? I'm just happy that this solution works because I got the lapdock just for this reason.
There is something in the ATT firmware that recognizes when the phone is using an ATT sim and disables data connections to the webtop environment. The whole time I was in Singapore using a StarHub Green prepaid sim my phone never did that "Verifying account blablablah..." when I docked the phone in my LapDock, as soon as I docked it I could start using Firefox.
An interesting note: the phone disables all data connections for a moment when it does this check. I noticed it because Pandora died on me one day when I was listening and I docked my phone. I watched the connectivity arrows on the H+ icon the next time I docked my phone and they went away for a few seconds just as that toaster notification popped up. Even with the Entitlement Mod this happens.
Hotspot tethering will kill your battery life, although that battery life is augmented by the lapdock. I'm pretty sure you can turn tethering off once you've started up Firefox and are browsing away. Don't ask me how I know, a little bird told me.
No, using apps inside the phone view isn't considered tethering. You can use the stock browser inside there without doing anything. If att calls using a non-stock browser tethering, pitch a fit and tell them to piss up a rope.
And regarding my snark earlier: I think a lot of the people who have been here for a while get tired of seeing threads like "Can I haz root on my phone OMG I'm a noob" when we remember discussing the same subject multiple times in the past. I know this particular question has been asked and answered before. I found it ironic that you were being chided by someone who had < 10 posts.
tl;dr - non-ATT sims work without mods, ATT sim data connection gets disabled, this has been covered.
