Hi,
I have a nexus one and my friend wants the desire HD, but has some questions:
1. Can we install recovery WITHOUT rooting or at least without touching the stock rom?
2. Is there a patch to READ/WRITE Arabic letters? (a fix to connect the letters with each other, don't care about arabic UI)
3. If there's a patch, can it be installed on STOCK rom? with or without recovery?
I have my nexus one rooted and installed cooked rom, he doesn't want a cooked rom because he wants to receive google OTA updates.
Lol google don't update the desire hd.
But yes you need root before recovery.

Doesn't google release OTA's every now and then?
Can't I keep the original rom while rooting the device?
I'm guessing what he means, is that Google doesn't update the Desire HD. HTC do, since it's an HTC phone
Google release the update HTC grab it insert the UI etc give it back to Google for he ota update

You need to root (and S-OFF) to install a custom recovery, but you can keep the stock ROM if you want. The catch is, that sinse your friend *wants* to buy a DHD, chances are that it will come with 1.72 ROM preinstalled. So no rooting possibility (for now at least), which means no custom recovery.
Updates are released by HTC. Obviously, if the update includes some patching to the Android OS, it's made by Google (but still released by HTC), but if the update includes patching of some phone issues (e.g. proximity sensor) or enhaching the functionality of a HTC's preinstalled app (e.g. camera), it's made and released by HTC themselves.
Don't know about arabic letters though. I remember there was a thread about this when the phone was released, but I didn't follow it. Try searching.

Its my understandig that if you root your phone but don't flash a rom you will still be alerted when your carrier pushes out ota updates. Now my question is if I install a different kernel such as chevy's or something to allow me to overclock my dx will I still be alerted for carrier ota updates?

You mean ROM not Kernel. (Kernel opens up a great deal of wounds, )
But the answer is no, you will not be able to update ota unless you flash back to stock ota sbf.
Just to add to what Steven58 said,
While it is true that loading a custom ROM will prevent you from receiving OTA updates, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
The dev's for those ROMs generally do a great job of keeping up with the latest /system files and updating their builds as necessary. Most likely any given custom ROM will have better functionality and stability than the stock Moto one anyway.
There are always some caveats and variables based on your own desires, but if the Stock Moto was done right, we wouldn't see so many popular ROM alternatives.
There will be cases when a new kernel (such as is the case with the most recent OTA .340) is released that you will need to either get the OTA, or hope some one releases an SBF. In those rare cases, you should be able to flash back to stock (with whatever the current system release is), do the update (which would update kernel, and possible radio, etc) and then proceed back to using your favorite ROM (assuming it's been updated to that version).
Clear as Mud?
Yup I understand it now. Thanks for the help and all the replies

will there be any problem (like phone may not work and the featues might not work etc etc after updation ?)
2. If anythig happens is it possible to bring back to 2.1
3. Will updation cause any other trouble (may be there will be anything which am not sure or thinking off now ?) ?

Hi Vassie,
Thanks for the reply - but if i go for the update is there anything else to do other than 'pressing the update button' in the message ? It will install 2.2 itself ?
Remember, you will lose the ability to root, install root apps, custom ROMs etc. However, looking at your post, it seems it is not a priority, so you might as well go for it.
* Updating should not bring any trouble, since, after all, it is an official ROM, and would have been thoroughly tested before release.
* That said it is recommended to both, restore factory settings and format SD card after the update. It is said to slow down the phone if you do not do so.
* Getting back to 2.1 from 2.2 is possible, but, it is a very long process and potentially risky, and, in general, not recommended.
As for the update, I am pretty sure it will install itself. Never attempted it personally, but, I am sure it will be a "Next - Next" type of procedure.

Hi,
Thanks for the valuable comments....
As you have told about rooting - I would like to know what is it (just for information if you dont mind ! any special advantages ?) Also in froyo is it possible to install apps and games in SD card ?
Rooting - Process to access the root of your device. Basically allows a lot more to be done with your device, like installing root only apps like Titanium Backup, SetCPU etc. Apart from that, it allows overclocking and underclocking your CPU, installation of Custom ROMs (Android 2.3.2 is available unofficially) etc.
For Apps2SD, Froyo supports it natively, but, not all apps and games can be moved using that. Only supported ones. Rooting allows you to install additional Apps2SD Scripts like DTApps2SD which allows install to SD irrespective of compatibility.

Great info. OMG u mean ginger bread in Wildfire (2.3.2 !!!) Please pardon me if am bugging u asking more questions .
For 2.2 am getting an update message - how you install custom roms ?
I guess that will be your own risk !
Yes, it is at your own risk. However, it is pretty safe. There are exit routes available if something does go wrong, also, if you take a backup before installing it, getting back to it is a snap.
Refer this guide, it will tell you all about the process of rooting and installing Custom ROMs.
[GUIDE] Turkeys' Ultimate Guide to Root Wildfire v42.1.2 (Easy & Safe!)
Apart from that, here is CM7 (Gingerbread)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=918072
Lastly, CM7 is still in Pre-Alpha stage, so, it may be a bit buggy. Also, it does not contain HTC's Sense Interface. So, if you prefer that, you can go for Sense Based Custom ROM's like WildPuzzle and SunAabh. They look and feel similar to the official ROM, but, offer many extras. (But they are based on Android 2.2.1)
3xeno, u r a store-house of info! thanx.
can u pls put a link for downloading wildpuzzle_v8.0.11 for htc wildfire?

It is not recommended to use WildPuzzle v8 since it is based on the Chinese Froyo, and, has caused many types of problems like location not working, contacts name not displaying not properly and so on. It is recommended to use the latest WildPuzzle 2.2.1 v0.x if you wish to use WildPuzzle, and that is available here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877243
Still, FYI, Wildpuzzle 8.0.11 is available here:

Hi,
I know there is a lot of comments about why root nexus 4. The reason for me is that I know there is a lot of small fixes which i can install (battery kernel... I think i can install just to rooted phpne) but for me the main thing is that I know in time I will get very lazy about installing new roms. I have htc desire and last time i installed new rom year ago. The same with my xoom.
So my question is, if i root my phone, will i be abble to update original rom just by going to settings-about-update? It doesnt work on my desire and xoom. But i installed unoficial roms there. But if i just want to unlock the phone for little fixes and still be able to get updates from google... Is that possible?
Sorry if it is stupud question,...
Thx

I believe that OTA updates just flash the stock kernel again, so you could unlock, root and flash a different kernel without fear of losing OTA updates. However, OTA updates will force you to lose root and you will have to flash the custom kernel again. You will continue to get notifications that say that there is a new update as long as you aren't also on a custom ROM
If you are running the stock ROM you will still get and ota notification. However if you've made any modifications such as a custom kernel, build.prop edit, system.ui edit, etc. The ota will fail upon installation.
If all you do is get root access it will install fine. You'll just have to flash the su binaries again.

Actually, SU has a survival mode that will preserve root even after OTA. CWM will also protect ropt so you don't have to reroot it. My Nexus 7 has been stock rooted and went thru 2 OTAs without losing root.

Sorry to hijack,
My question is, I am rooted with stock rom but have CWR and a different kernel.
When the next OTA comes, I would need to download the whole rom because of CWR and kernel.
Question I have is that if I want to flash the OTA, would I need to wipe my device or can I just flash the ROM ontop. I know my old device (DHD) I had to wipe everything before I install the ROM. The reason why I am asking is because can I get away with just flashing on top therefore keeping all my data on my device so I no need to restore it via titanium backup (I am lazy)
Hey,
I have a question regarding rooting and upgrading.
Before i root, I would like to know if I do root, how will I upgrade to KLP when it is released for nexus 10?
Do i have to restore?
It depends on the situation. If you root, using a backup app like carbon or titanium backup will ensure anytime you update or change a rom you keep all your goodies. If your root only and don't change your rom you will get the OTA and it will lose root (easy to fix) and your stuff will stay.
Changing your rom is a different story though

I'm on stock, but when klp releases, can i just update ? Would jb> klp be too big of a change that a lot of bugs may arise?
For example, I used to have a rooted nook color, it updated and I got unrooted... There ended up being bugs even after I rerooted it...
I am just wondering is updating then rerooting the correct method...

It's stock Google software. I had a Nook Color as well and they tried to block root on it anyway they could. There is no knowing if the upgrade to KLP will be easy (history tells us it will be) and root should be on board almost immediately after release, at the very worst you would have to reroot but that is nothing.

Other question in the same vein:
I have a rooted n10, but I changed the kernel. Will I have to revert to update?
Probably yes, but worth a shot first, atthe kernel question. I'm just going to wait utnil a AOKP KLP comes out, myself.
About Key Lime Pie I read somewhere that KLP will ne only available on quad core devices..

When you are rooted there is no point to updating to a new Android version via OTA. You simply go from the ROM you are on, to installing a new version of the same ROM based on the new Android version. Developers like to keep their ROM updated, so usually you will see all the most popular ROMs updated to the latest and greatest version of Android within a day.
If you try to do OTA then you usually lose root, you often have to re-lock your bootloader, you have ton verify you are on the stock rom AND kernel, and then still hope you are "stock enough" to have the update be successful. That is just way too much work and not worth it at all when the alternative is to just flash a new version of a ROM and be done with it.

It depends if you are stock rooted or on a custom rom...
If you are stock rooted but have Twrp you could do the OTA reboot to recovery and root checker will install super SU for you
If you don't have Twrp... Nexus devices are easy to root anyways
Or use an OTA root keeper app
After rooting this device, will I still be able get the regular official updates from Google automatically? And if I get an update, will it remove the root and I have to root again?
If I install a custom ROM, can I be able to come back to official ROM?
Are there any tweaked version of the official camera app and what is the best camera app for nexus 4?
Thanks for your help
S
You have to have the stock recovery to receive official updates, but when you root you install a custom recovery and therefore will not receive official updates. The answer to the second question is just that you won't get any official updates until you uninstall root and flash the factory IMG. And yes you can easily flash back to stock after installing a custom ROM but make sure to back up your data as it will all be wiped. The last question I don't know the answer to. I like the stock camera and its simplicity, but if you want something more "professional" I would suggest looking in the play store.

I believe that you can still recieve an ota if you have a custom recovery installed. It will overwrite it though.

good morning -- just like you to know the beauty of this forum is the ability to find all the answers to your questions by searching. First off updates do not exactly come once a week but they will with custom roms. As well any update that Google puts out you will easily be able to flash here.
There are ways to maintain root in most cases especially with using SuperSu I believe. I am not 100% on that but I have read of this in passing. Its just easier to me to flash the updated rooted version
Tweaked versions of the may be found in the apps section but again a search would of told you so.
Basically what I am saying is enjoy your time here but think of it like this what ever question you may think you have has been asked 100x before so just take some time look it up and gain some knowledge about android, rooting and N4 :good:

You can be on Stock Rom with No Mods Unlocked Rooted with a Custom Recovery and you will get the ota update and it will install fine.
The ota update link will be posted here before you get on your device so it's good to have a custom recovery so you can just flash it. It will also protect you from losing root and your custom recovery
