Greetings,
I only post this now since I have yet been able to find a straight answer on this anywhere else.
I was given a t-mobile galaxy tab when they first came out. Since then I have rooted, reflashed, and am running one of the more recent euro firmwares to enable voice calls. My question is this:
I have heard that flashing a bell i9000 radio to an ATT tab will enable voice and 3g. Since my t-mobile tab is unlocked, and running euro firmware, can I flash the i9000 radio and use an ATT sim with voice/3g data? If I try and it fails, can I safely reflash the t-mobile radio, assuming I can find it ( I honestly haven't looked).
Thanks in advance for any insight!
I believe it will not work because they both have 2 different radios in them.

T Mobile tab on Bell
It won't work.
T mobile uses 1700/2100 mHz while Bell uses 1900/2100
Bell is 850/1900
not 2100

Well, Bell (and AT&T, Telus, and Rogers) modems are actually 850/1900/2100, if you want to get technical.
I actually finally got my unlock, and am connected to the Att network. My issue now is that the reception is awful. I'm assuming after some research that this is due to the radio being used. Folks with the att galaxy tab have had good luck with the bell radio, but since I have the tmobile hardware, I'm wondering if it will work. I'll try flashing the bell radio when I get home and report the results.

The 2G reception is as good as it'll get with any modem, since the tab is quadband / covers all 2G frequencies. There is zero 3G reception if you have the wrong ATT vs. Tmobile modem.
Alright. I just flashed the bell i9000 modem (at least I think I did, odin, flash under phone, no pit) and rebooted with my att sim in. No 3g, and still extremely poor edge reception. I have full edge reception if i put the same card in a nexus s. I'm not too worried about 3g at this point to be honest, but any ideas on the poor edge reception?
I experienced the same thing. With the TMobile modem with an AT&T, signal is ok, but edge only.

I find that my Nexus One has slightly better reception than the Tab. But remember that the "number of bars" is not a standardized test, but mostly marketing. You have to actually compare download speeds. The N1 definitely shows more bars than the Tab, but that by itself is meaningless.
Well, in addition to bars, download speeds are pretty awful on the tab with the att sim. If I only have one bar, it is not even usable in most cases. If i'm lucky enough to get two or three bars (which I do on rare occasions since flashing the bell modem) The speeds are still less than half of what the nexus is getting on edge only.
I might try the ATT modem just for kicks to see if it helps, though I know i'll lose voice with it until I flash back.
I tried the att modem, too. Same thing. Signal is very poor. Mostly says edge, but every so often it would say 3g.
If it was a physical hardware (antenna tuned only for 1700 mhz), I don't know why edge signal with att sim is also bad.
3g internet access would be icing on cake. I intended to use my tab via wifi when I bought it. I just like the possibility of using out on both tmo and att on 3g.
I was having the same problem as you guys but when I flashed the bell modem on my t-mobile tab edge is working much better now.

I have a unlocked tmob hd2, using it on ATT.
I get Edge ( as expected ) but that seems to be very slow....( probably this is the speed of edge)
Is there any specific radio version for using with ATT.
Any user experience is appreciated
I am using the tmobile hd2 on ATT and the speed seems fine to me. I am usually on wifi and really dont take notice of it. then again, how can you test the speed to know that you are getting true EDGE network speeds?
Also, I am using a custom ROM [Manila version touch x-treme 2.30.6.30],
with radio version 2.08.50.08_2
Bytheway, is it even possible to change the radio version? I would think that whats on the tmobile phone is specifically for their network.

Funny thing is my unlocked HD2's radio reception and quality is much better running on ATT compared to when I had the T-Mo sim chip in. I must have some really crappy towers around me or ATT just saturates the area or the radio wasn't tested very well on the T-Mo network. Regardless, this puppy runs great on ATT. ATT Edge is better than T-Mo Edge as well. Go figure.
When i checked the speed 3g vs edge on att its huge
download speed 1574 vs 124
Upload speed 331 vs 19
Edge really feels so slow, especially after used to 3g speeds...
Probably get telstra then
Edit to correct the speed no. s

Hmmm, my download speeds on Edge match or slightly exceed your downloads for 3g. My downloads for T-Mo averages less than 100kb. I do get better results not using the ATT proxy though.

Radios aren't assigned to carriers. What works on T-Mobile will work on ATT. If you are on ATT using an unlocked T-Mo HD2, no matter what radio you use, you will not get 3G - different bands.
Know that very well but was wondering which radio would give the best reception for edge

Do they really have a separate hardware for different bands? I doubt it, would be pretty expensive. If it's a software, I guess we can expect somebody to hack it and enable all HSDPA AT&T bands

It's actually for bands, so yes, there's separate hardware. Carriers do this to help instill customer loyalty and retention, among other things. There simply is no way to "hack it and enable all HSDPA AT&T bands"
SO If I have a TMO HD2 and have AT&T service - If I am a big internet user - I shouldn't bother with this phone? My Fuze will be faster? Or is it worth keeping the HD2 on At&T? I love the phone - the size, the screen, the features - ect... but If it is going to be a slower user experience for data I rather just sell it.

It just depends on 1) how available wifi is as an option for you, and 2) if the EDGE speeds (in your area) are acceptable for when you'd have to be on that (no wifi available). My guess is that they probably won't be, especially if by "internet use" you include a lot of webpages, and/or streaming of any kind.
HSDPA? I always have an H on my phone - can the TMO HD2 do HSDPA on AT&T? If so is that different? I know I am a noob when it comes to bands.

No, HSDPA is just a higher-speed 3G spec...it uses the same band ranges as regular 3G, so the same incompatibility still exists between AT&T and Tmo
Going back to the original question.

I used 2.06 2.07, 2.08 with no difference on edge speed, I am in Dallas. However, in some areas I can get 3G, I thought HD2 was not compatible with US 3G frequencies, go figure.

That is interesting.
I just unlocked my HD2 but have yet to stick my sim in it - still on my FUZE... Debating on weather to sell it or use it.
I am running TMOUS unlocked HD2 on ATT.
I moved from original TILT and to me EDGE seems way better than 3G on my old TILT. I think it do to the processor speed probably but for me the results are still great.
I can only imagine how TELSTRA version would run on ATT !!!
Anybody know how actually measure the connection speed of my phone?
Thanks

Visit that site from your phone's browsers for a speed test. You'll probably get slightly different results using IE vs Opera, so try it several times to be confident in your results.
Avoid mobilespeedtest.com if you come across that site...their results are inconsistent and unreliable.
Hi, im in Jamaica, using my HTC MyTouch 4 G but unfortunately my phone refuse to connect to more than EDGE speed on any of the mobile network, it is unlocked & therefore able to use any SIM but no matter which networks i connect to this phone refuse to go any faster than edge. Today I tried my SIM in another phone which is an Iphone 3G, and it instantly picked up 3G speed so it prove that the problem is with my phone & not the networks, can anybody give some advice? My internet settings are all correct & entered by the technicians at all the respectful phone companies
Did you do factory restore settings.. or just factory reset the whole phone..ooh are you on Android 2.1 or 2.3. Also go to network mode and see if its not on GSM only.

the mytouch 4g and all other tmobile phones will only have 3g/4g on tmobile networks. this is because the bands that the mytouch 4g and other tmobile devices have are different from most of the world's. so unless another carrier has the same bands as tmobile, 1700/2100/AWS, EDGE will be the fastest you get. the iPhone 3G is capable of 3G because it's band is the same as most of the world's carriers network bands for 3G: 850 / 1900 / 2100.
this doesn't have anything to do with factory resetting the phone or whatever. it is simply hardware.
hope this sheds some light for you.

The reason it worked in the iPhone is that T-Mobile and att use different 3g bands and the hardware in those phones is only setup to work on those bands. Before you buy a phone, unlocked you should find out what bands your local networks use.

Just some semantics: "most of the world" uses 2100 band, which makes MT4G compatible with most existing networks in Europe and around the world. Americas (both North and South), on the other hand, happen to use mostly 850 and 1900 bands, uncommon in the rest of the world, which are indeed incompatible with MT4G.
Am still confused.. even some people and parts of the united states people still fall on or can't get pass edge..anyway...

As long as you don't have a compatible-band cellular tower of your carrier in vicinity, you won't get 3G. Not all cellular towers support 3G.
And if your carrier's band(s) aren't compatible, then you never get 3G.

Nope. Some phones are restricted to certain bands by software (radio build), but unfortunately this restriction seems to be in HW.

With some God like skills you may be able to remove the HW antenna from a T-Mobile phone and replace the one in this phone. While I would not suggest it. I didn't want to tell you there was NO way to do it.
I hope someone in this thread can answer the same kinda question for me, but in a different way. Right now I'm in the United States on Simple Mobile's 40$ 3G Plan, but I noticed on my MyTouch 4G (Running the latest RoyalGinger) that I am connected at 4G speeds, however shouldn't my indicator for Data/internet connector on the phone read off as 3G instead of 4G? When i ran a bandwidth test on my phone from DSL Reports Mobile Speed Test, I got the following from a 100k file.
124 kbit/sec
0.287s latency
6.72s d/l time
Is that how fast 3G usually is? or should I be going faster? Thanks to anyone who can help.
I have read a lot already on this site about my issue just wanted to clear up a few unanswered questions.
I am looking to switch from Verizon to t-mobile because of prices and terrible reception where I'm living in Riverside Ca. So I know that I can simply put in a t-mobile sim and change to the correct gsm settings and get cell reception (correct me if I'm wrong) but what about getting LTE from t-mobile? I have looked to see if the new 700 mhz band covers here and Ventura County Ca. (where I am when I'm not in Riverside) and it does so I should get LTE without having to put in a custom Rom, correct?
I'm a novice when coming to roms (plus a failed attempt) so i would like to avoid them as much as I can. Will do it if I have to though... All about saving $$$$
Thanks for the replies.
@mjmjpfaff
I know what your saying about saving $$$ phones these days are almost the half of a old car/price of a motorcycle.
If your Verizon phone is not simlocked and also has support for the LTE bands which T-Mobile is using then it's possible to get LTE working without the need to buy another phone. If it's mentioned on internet on multiple sites that the G2 supports that LTE band then you can get it without a custom rom.
In my eyes it's possible to have working LTE from T-Mobile on your verizon phone, but to be 100% sure I would contact Verizon support about your question.
I also had many fail attempts with custom roms first but after you get how it works, you can flash anything as smooth as butter:good:
you could also wait for a VS980 G2 user who had the same issue as you but I think that it would take you more time awaiting for a reaction from somebody since not many people are browsing the Q&A section.

I found this on another thread:
"I just switched from a Verizon Galaxy Note 2 to the G2 since all I can get from it with t-mobile is H+ speeds (about 4mbs-6mbs). I inserted the t-mobile sim into the verizon g2 and it automatically switched to global mode and I then went in to edit the apn settings to fast.t-mobile.com. 4G LTE is working just fine on stock rom kitkat update (I'm in L.A. suburb). Speeds range from 15mbs to 30mbs+ depending on where I am in the city. Here are some screenshots"
This guy is pretty much in my area and sounds like he did not do anything other switch in a t-mobile sim...

I'm using my droid mini on tmobile and am getting LTE speeds. You should see them if you're in an area where the network was refarmed to 1900mhz
Keep in mind the fastest speeds you will see is 21Mbps unless you swap for the Tmobile Verizon which goes up to 42Mbps and higher.

Hi I too am using t-mobile on a VS980 and with CM11 and Cloudyg3, I am able to get LTE through their automated APN settings!
So I bought my wife what I thought was a good deal and got her the N910H not knowing that it was 3G only. Ok, well, on her verizon branded unlocked note 2 she can get HSPA speeds with her sim, but with the note 4 that's unlocked, she hasn't seen above the edge network, and her signal is garbage. APN settings are what they should be, tried a few different variations, and nothing. Bought a Verizon 4G LTE sim from straight talk for her, before I realized it was 3G only and only assumed it would help. But would it help? Both ATT and Verizon get LTE coverage in the area, or what can I do to fix my signal? Oh yeah, and I can't send or receive pictures...ugh. HELP
*apparently she can now receive pictures, but still can't send them

I almost purchased the 910H myself but luckily found out it doesn't support LTE before pulling the trigger. If you can still return it, get the 910C model instead. It supports LTE for both AT&T & T-Mobile.

Ok, so playing around with some of the settings in more networks, mobile networks I changed the network mode from gsm only to wcdma/gsm (auto connect) and data speeds are NOW where they should be, which is 3G, and with a full signal got 8MB down speed, so, that's good. Now the question becomes why can i receive pictures and not send them. Actually managed to get a couple to go through, but no clue how or why they went through.
My S7 Edge G935FD (dual SIM international version) gets only "4G" on T-Mobile in the San Francisco Bay Area, and never "LTE". Is this a "4G vs. LTE" naming issue, or does it lack the band T-Mobile requires for LTE? It also gets "H+" often, in the same location that my old S5 had full bars LTE.
Speed tests with the SpeedSpot app range from 17Mbps to 33Mbps down, and 3.75 to 7.5Mbps up on "4G", but only 5Mbps down and 1Mbps up in H+ areas.
I bought it from tropical_mobile on eBay.

Just naming issue with international version.
@kvsandeepreddy is right.
LTE means LongTermEvolution which is the so called 4th generation of Mobile Networks. So LTE is 4G
1G = Analog mobile Network, I think
2G = GSM and EDGE
3G = UMTS and HSDPA
4G = LTE

Well, that means that the S7 dual-SIM gets poorer reception than my old single-SIM S5:
In the same spot in the building (at my work desk), I'd get full LTE bars on the old S5, but only H or H+ at best on the new S7 Edge dual SIM. In practice this means ~6x slower downloads and ~7x slower uploads. Pretty ****ty.

No that's not what it means. The g935fd version is meant to be able to switch to any international firmware version. There are several different modems for each region. You are going to just have to flash different modems in Odin and see which one works best for your region. This does not trip knox or void warranty as long as you do it right because you are flashing official modems. As I said in the other thread you were in, do your research.
Can someone link me to the best modem to used on the dual sim model in the states?

I'm just using the UAE firmware that the duos came with. It's updated with the June security patch. Only issue I've had is slower than normal download and upload speeds on at&t. It's not that big of a deal, just annoying. I think it has more to do with atts provisioning on their network. I'll post a solution if I figure it out, whether it's a different csc, apn settings or some device setting on my account.
4G is called LTE in USA. If you are getting 4G. That means you are getting LTE.

Yep. I can confirm the same thing. I have 2 s7 edges. One is a DUOS and the other is AT&T branded. Tested both repeatedly and found that the AT&T branded device is getting way faster speeds than the DUOS. In my particular area the AT&T phone was reaching up to 60 Mbps while the DUOS was only hitting 30-40 Mbps. Very curious on how to fix this since this phone has all the necessary bands to support LTE in the states.

At least you're getting that. My speed tests are consistently in the .72 to 5 Mbps range on the DL and 1-7Mbps on the upload, which is basically about half to a third of what my other AT&T devices are getting in the same location at same time.

Wow your right that is abysmal. Have you tried installing LTE Discovery and comparing the two devices? Check to see if they are connecting to the same towers.

It's not just the bands. AT&T is known for prioritizing their branded phones vs. BYOD phones. It's done by EMEI ... they have a list of all their branded models in a DB and they get priority. TMO doesn't much care. I tested my Duos yesterday and TMO gave me 59.4/12.8 network transfer. It's as good as my 6P. My AT&T sim is in sim1 and is restricted to 2G which is fine since I need calls and texts only from it since it's a work #.
And it does support most of AT&T's bands except band30 which is really new. 4G everywhere else is LTE here as was said in other responses in this thread. It's most likely AT&T deprioritizing the phone as it's a BYOD.

Wondering if you ever solved this issue. I would like to also buy this version and use it on band 12 with TMO.

It doesn't have band 12 so I'd save your money. Band 12 is just the deeper penetration 700mhz anyway which around me (SF area) can't be found. My Nexus 6P which has band 12 never connects to anything but band 4 .. ever.
Same crap... If it bothers you flashes the csc

I noticed this as well with my 6p. Supposedly band 12 was to save us all but my phone prefers band 4. I only got a glimpse of band 12 the other day then the phone switch switched back to band 4 when I toggled wifi on and off.
