USB device not recognized - Epic 4G General

I'm using the original USB cable from the box plugged into the back USB port on my PC.
I've tried simply plugging it in, "USB device not recognized".
i've installed the samsung drivers for the epic 4g, "USB device not recognized".
I've installed the samsugn galaxy S windows 7 64bit drivers, "USB device not recognized".
I've installed PDAnet, wouldn't finish the install because windows couldn't see the phone.
The phone worked fine on a windows XP laptop when I installed the samsung drivers from the epic 4g page on samsung's website.
Any advice?

Buy a better usb cable or try a different usb port on your computer. My phone only works with one of the four on my computer.

I've used the stock cable for everything, works fine for me. Make sure it's a USB port that's directly connected to your motherboard.

It is. The back of my PC has 6 ports all directly connected to the motherboard.

OK I got it "fixed".
One (and only 1) of my front ports will work with the samsung epic 4g drivers from the samsung support page. None of he 6 on the back will work.
Weird...but if it's working it's working.

Same way with mine it doesnt work well with windows 7

I don't remember the service menu code, but changing the usb mode from modem to pda solved all my connectivity issues.

Is it a Dell XPS 9100? My Dell XPS 9100 has never drivered up for me, it doesn't matter what usb port you use. My wifes Dell laptop drivers up immediatly.

Its not the stock cable but win 7-64 Drivers try winxp should be fine.

I use htc evo cable, works fantastic on both my windows 7 machines. Stock is only good for charging lol

If anyones still having issues please try ##8778# in dialer, and on usb only check pda instead of modem and see if that helps.

That worked. Thanks for the excellent tip

Just formatted and now my pc won't see my epic!!

I just got a win 7 x64 ultimate install disk. Now it won't even see my phone....I downloaded the correct drivers ad still nothing. I was on win 7 x32 ultimate and installed the 32 bit drivers and all went well. Now I'm on x64 bit version and with x64 drivers it ain't find my device!!!! I'm at a loss here.

did you get it resolved, I had the same issue. I then move to the rear usb port, you need to look for the safley remove media icon on the task bar. It should be there. when you plug the phone in the epic should show up. If not goto disk manager in windows and make sure that the drive letter that the epic is trying to use isnt already in use, i fit is change it.
The other thing is to make sure on the phone that you have selected the correct method, IE charging etc In my case the phone would show up as raw format yet it would show up fine on another PC. all i can think of is that it was something buggy with the USB.
Try a different USB port and if that doesn't work try a different cable.
If it still doesn't work try removing the drivers for the device manually, reboot the system and reconnect the device. It should automatically discover the drivers for you running Windows 7.
Also when you connect the phone to the system does the menu pop up asking you how you would like the phone to respond to the connection (IE. Mass Storage, Phone as Modem and whatever the 3rd option is)?

I've never gotten those options ever. Nothing pops up on my phone. I thought it was weird since I've heard about them, but never seen it, mac or pc. Any way this is connected to usb debugging being on?

Edit: yup, menu came up when I turned USB debugging off.
Glad the menu came up! The question is did the computer pick up the device?

Nope not even with the correct samsung epic win 64bit drivers. I couldn't for the life of me get then to see my phone. Reinstalled win 7 ultimate 32bit. Saw it right when hooked up! So I guess ill stay with my x32 edition :-(

You probably just got some drivers crossed. Manually removing the drivers should have fixed it versus reimaging the system =/

Any help would be appreciatied.. Thanks
Install pdanet on your computer. When it gets to the part about driver installation, select samsung and voila.

Seconded. I bought a cheap charging kit and the cable would charge but would not allow file transfer. Took it back, bought another cable and it's fine.
Either the phone is finicky about cables, or it might just require a particular type (probably USB 2.0).
I had this issue also last week. I tried another cable and it worked fine.
But now I am having issues with my usb ports in general. Now they just stop working every once in a while and I am required to restart my laptop.
Don't know if the two problems are related.
Try different USB ports. Like the ones on the back on your computer.
I've been having the same issue. I went out to Radio Shack and bought a new data cable. So far all ports on my laptop, winXP pro 32bit, and my win7 64bit desktop have not had problems.
I'm thinking that the USB cable supplied by Samsung is crap. I tested them both out on the same machine, same port; the new one worked fine, while the stock cable only gave me adb access.
I had this same exact problem. I kept thinking the phone was going bad or something. I tried the cable that came with my Epic & the one that came with my Moment, both didn't work... for some reason it worked find on a Mac though. So when I gave my mom my Moment when I got the Epic she bought an extra micro-USB cable and I decided to try that one, for some odd reason, that one worked.
Still don't know exactly what was going on but a third-party cable fixed the problem for me.
Hope this helps.

"usb device not recognized" with two diff. win7 installations.

as title states.
It doesn't seem to be the samsung drivers
as I have uninstalled and reinstalled.
but the Android drivers. I have no Android drivers installed anymore
(the 3 of 4 that installs)
therefore i lose adb connectivity
*This has happened on 2 different Windows 7 installations. (switching between 2 different hdds, on this laptop)
I have usb debug on ofcourse.
I have uninstalled reinstalled latest samsung drivers.
I have installed pdanet drivers.
I have turned off phone, while connected then boot up. still no fix.
I am using acs froyo dk17. But this happened with dk05 as well.
Is there a fix for this?
I've had this problem twice. The way I fixed it was to wipe the sd card. Its a pain but that's what fixed it

If not a driver problem (doesn't sound like it is) the next *usual* suspect would be the usb cable. The samsung cable that shipped with these phones is crap. I got a 6' belkin one on amazon for $8 that has worked flawlessly.
Make sure you're not using a USB port that's on a hub or daughtercard. It should be one that's directly on the motherboard.
I kept fiddling with settings and rebooting both phone and computer and got past this once on my old win7 box. On my new one, I got nowhere after an hour or so. Worked first thing with the same cable on my win xp machine.
Plug your phone into a USB1 only hub, or on the same channel as a usb 1 keyboard or mouse and it will detect just fine... it won't really be useful because it won't be able to flash still (I believe it should detect as a composite device with several facets and only some of those are usb1-only compatible). I believe that the underlying problem is a bad implementation of the usb spec on one of the usb2 only parts, but I didn't feel like digging any deeper. I might try a win xp vm on the same physical hw to see if I can narrow it down to a win7 usb2 + device usb2 compatibility issue. Might be worth making sure our win7 patches are up to date, too.

Thanks for the replies guys.
The usb trick won't work because it's a laptop. And I tried all four of them. I only have windows 7 machines. One being a ultra sff and has like 12 usb ports. It hasn't failed me yet, but happens on the laptop.
It wouldn't hurt to get another cable, a longer one. And my sd is maxed out, I will pull it instead of format.
Thanks all

I had this problem. Plugged into the back instead if the hub and reinstalled everything. Now it's working like a charm on all usb ports. Really odd problem.

I had this problem. I was using a USB extension cable that was a bit long. All the other phones and USB devices worked fine with it. EPIC did not want to. I got the impression that EPIC needs more power from the USB port than most of these other devices. For me, skipping the USB extension cable did the trick. I also used a powered USB hub and that worked well too. You might want to try different USB ports. Some may provide more power than others. Also try a powered USB hub (some are built into monitors) if you have access to one.
I had the same issue with my laptop as well. It is most likely the cable. The samsung one is crap. I tried every port and installed the usb drivers a dozen times with no success. Used the cable from my wifes blackberry and worked on the first try. Just pick up a new cable. Try monoprice.com they have awesome deals.

Also make sure your antivirus is off although that's likely not the culprit. Do you install the drivers as administrator?
Try a new cord. If that doesn't work, try deleting/uninstalling the device and/or hub from the device manager - plug the phone in, letting win7 do its worst by not recognizing it, then open the device manager and find the usb hub. try deleting/uninstalling. unplug the phone and scan for hardware changes. I think this may force windows to reinstall the drivers for the usb hub. Disclaimer, it's been a while since I spent significant time fooling with windows computers so take this advice at your own risk - I'm feeling my way like an old man with cataracts trying to find his way around his long-lost childhood home. in the dark. My computer did this for a while and now it doesn't although it's certainly possible I changed the cord I was using.
The best way to get drivers to work is install PDAnet IMO..
I had driver problems upon driver problems.. swapped cables, etc.
went through all the motions that you all are describing here and what fixed it for me was installing PDAnet. Worked like a charm.
Hope this helps.
I agree about using pdanet for drivers. Unfortunately this problem isn't with the driver not being installed correctly. I got it on one machine and not another, using the same friver. In fact I got it to work on the same machinewith the same driver ... just different ports (one was stuck in usb1/ohci nd worked, the usb2 port never worked on one machine and a usb1 port never worked on a different one).

This worked for me when I had the problem. This will be the second time I had a usb cable go bad on me. Maybe I shouldn't buy those cheap ones from China...
I've had this problem with numerous cables on Dell E series laptops with 3 Epics and a Moment. For the life of me I couldn't get the phone to be recognized when using the USB ports on the left side of the machine. Plugged it into the ones on the right and have never had a problem. I think with the Dells it's a low current issue on the left side ports. The shorter the USB cable the better off you'll be if it is a low current problem.
thanks but i did alot of that last night and today, uninstall/reinstall drivers, usb hubs.. nothing
i may need to try another cable because i am workign on a friends epic sunday.

It HAS to be the power differences NOT cable.
Same cable as I charge with, plugged into the front of the computer (hub).
Plugged into the back of the computer recignized the first time.
=USB power
In my case, tried several micro USB cables, no dice. Tried my laptop and desktop, no dice. Tried USB hub or direct to PC usb ports, no dice. Device manager shows the right comm port but all the one-click roots i've tried can't find the phone. USB storage has never mounted for me from day one either.
Sigh, never had this issue with any other Android phone.
Finally figured out my issue. I had set it to "modem" while doing something else in an epst menu rather than "pda". Since I corrected that, works dandy.
I feel so stupid.

STILL having trouble with download mode!

Okay.. I'm almost on the verge of being desperate for a fix for this. I still can't get my windows or Linux computer to recognize my phone in download or mass storage mode. I've talked to adrynalyne and he told me to try heimdall. No luck. There's a new post made about this issue nearly every day on here.
At this point I would be happy with finding a way to flash the modem without using Odin. I know we have a ton of AMAZING devs here, do you guys think we can try to figure this out? I think it is definitely something beyond drivers, considering the sudden increase in people having the problem.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but have you tried all of the usb ports, even the ones on the back of the pc? And how about rebooting phone while connected to pc? Usb debugging on, off... all of these worked for me at one time.
Sent from my rooted froyo Fascinate
Its not a dumb question. Thank you for trying to help. Yes, I have tried just about anything you can think of. Tried Linux, tried windows, tried 64 bit drivers, tried 32 bit drivers, tried every single USB port. Nothing.

Firewall? I remember a firewall causing problems with my old phone. I didn't check for my fascinate, got lazy and just turned it off before doing anything. I highly recommend not being connected to anything other than your phone if you do turn off your firewall.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Thanks for the suggestion. I have even tried that. As far as I know Ubuntu doesn't really have a firewall. although I could be wrong. And none of the devs seem to be able to come up with anything either.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
Based on the described symptoms, I would say either the USB port on the phone has bit the dust, or you have a bad USB cable. I would try a different, known good USB cable and see what happens.
Posted from my EB01 SuperClean Fascinate with Voodoo
A little far-fetched, but I'll try anyway ...
From Windows:
- Don't plug in your Fascinate
- Create a new SYSTEM environment variable called "DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES" and set it to "1" (without the quotes)
- Open Device Manager
- View / Show Hidden Devices
- If you see any of the following, delete them (right-click on the device and select "uninstall", check the box that says "Delete the driver software..." if available:
ADB Interface / SAMSUNG Android Composite ADB Interface
Disk Drives / SAMSUNG SCH-I500 Card USB Device
DVD/CD-ROM Drives / SAMSUNG UMS CD-ROM USB Device
DVD/CD-ROM Drives / SAMSUNG CD-ROM USB Device
Modems / SAMSUNG * (* = anything that starts with SAMSUNG)
Ports (COM & LPT) / SAMSUNG *
Universal Serial Bus Controllers / SAMSUNG *
- Uninstall "SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones" from Control Panel / Programs and Features
- Re-install the proper Samsung drivers "Generic_CDMA_i500_Showcase_USB_Driver_V1.3.550.0.msi".
- See what happens when you plug it in next time and let us know
So I followed the instructions to a T. It installed all of the drivers when I plugged the phone in. But get the USB device not recognized when i go to download mode.
Strangely, Odin does recognize the phone when I put it into dun mode. But it won't flash anything.

Question for those that use Odin

Hey all. What kind of USB cable do you? I cant get my recignized by Odin. Ive tried every port on my computer, restarted phone computer, took battery out of phone and it still wont connect. I think its the cable. So can anyone guide me to one that will work? Thanks
Just buy a Blackberry cable they are very thick and nice but any other type of Micro usb cable works better than the stock one ...
Just curious, have you installed the phone drivers on your PC?

I use a blackberry cable. Never had an issue

You might even be able to get a Sprint store to exchange your crappy Samsung cable for the Blackberry one if they have one. It might take a little convincing, but most stores will have a small stockpile of cables from return phones, and if you explain to them that you have read online that the blackberry one works better for data transfer, they will probably exchange it.
I've also used the Palm Pre cable, and it worked fine as well.
Maybe I'm lucky, but I've had no problems with the cable that came with my epic.
HTC cables work well... like the one that comes with the EVO
I use the cord from my old Samsung Moment, It actually came with a separate USB Data cord. I think just about any cord will be better than the ones that shipped with the Epic.
I've always used my epic USB. Is ur phone disconnected from the PC before u enter download mode... if so try resetting ur PC, opening Odin, putting your phone in dl mode, than connecting the USB to your phone
