[WARNING] Do not flash new firmware without checking for bootloaders - Galaxy S I9000 General

The Galaxy Tab has had some recent firmware that includes new bootloaders. These bootloaders have checksums/signatures in various parts of the firmwares. The "normal" Samsung ROMs, and custom ROMs and kernels, do not have these checksums. The result is that once flashed, you cannot revert to older/official/custom Samsung ROMs, and you are pretty much stuck using one of these four ROMs [There are/were 4 tab ROMs that had these newer bootloaders], as they are the only ones containing the right checksums.
Before flashing leaked or even official ROMs (via Kies), check to make sure that the ROM you are flashing DOES NOT include new bootloaders ( boot.bin and sbl.bin ) or wait for confirmation that it's a safe ROM.
Although there has not been SGS firmware with these new bootloaders, Samsung may release firmware that has these bootloaders, so make sure that you check!
The latest bootloaders from Samsung were in the XXJPU release, JPU is safe to flash because it did not have the checksum bootloader that Galaxy Tab has.
Newer Galaxy S firmware (that comes in a low package) may have similar checksums.
How do we know if a ROM includes bootloaders?
Open the PDA file with winrar, 7zip or something similar, and look for "boot.bin" or "sbl.bin". If these files are included, delete them before flashing, or wait for confirmation that it's a safe ROM.

What if a ROM is avaible on KIES at first? Is there a way to know? Better to wait in that case too?
Yes, it is important to check for ROMs available on KIES too. If it is an encrypted file, you can decode it using decodertest.exe, after which the file will be downloaded to your hdd. From there, you can untar and check if boot.bin and also sbl.bin is present in the file.

If you have working bootloaders, then updating the bootloaders is not mandatory as they are only supposed, to fix some compatibility issues with Mac OS X platform.

unfortunatley, even if the option in Odin is unticked, it will still update the bootloaders if the files are part of the package....
if the Boot.bin and Sbl.bin files are present in the PDA file they are the relevent bootloader files and i believe you can delete and re-package the PDA containing only the rfs and zimage files? (i hope a dev will correct me if i am wrong but thats what i would assume)

I hope Samsung are not going to become another Motorola or I may as well go back to Nokia.

I'm not too sure if I understand this well, but I am guessing it means that if we flash our phone with a ROM that has a boot.bin or sbl.bin we can no longer flash anything else?
When I got my Galaxy back from Samsung Service it had JH2 on it. I upgraded with Kies to JL2 (it has Sbl.bin but not boot.bin) and everything is fine. I decided to put Darky's Gingerbread ROM on it and it worked fine for a couple of days but I decided to put JL2 back on. No problem there.
I have had JL2 on a couple of more times after trying different ROMs.

The option in Odin for "Phone Bootloader Update" refers to boot.bin only, even if its not enabled sbl.bin will still be updated if it exists in the PDA archive.

Thread updated with new questions

Grr...
I hate it when manufacturers put in 'updates' like this just to stop legitimate (read 'legally allowed') hacking of their product. Sony does it all the time with the PS3 and I was hoping Samsung at least wouldn't take this route.
Users who like using that reg-hack thing to flash especially need to be careful now.

i have updated to JPY with kies using reg hack, is JPY safe or i already doomed my phone with JPY????

It safe. I would know if its even possible to do this on this phone.
On xbox there is fuses that gets burned when you flash newer system, so you can't flash older system. So far its the only way to prevent to flash. I don't think sgs has this. Many they put some checks in the bootloader that the system then checks. But that would not prevent much.

A quick tutorial on how to flash the new Rotohammer roms (these have no bootstraps)

Ok here is a simple tutorial for any new to this tab stuff like I was yesterday.
I take no credit for this just wanted to help compile an easy solution.
It is so simple once you figure it out.
First download Odin v1.7 here unzip it and stick it on your desktop,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=478059&d=1293895557
Then download these files.
http://files.deodexed.com/ModADroid-Galaxy-Tablet/Rotohammer/JME/
These zips need to be unpackaged to get to the .tar files. Pay attention as Winrar will see .tar as a .zip too. (read the file extensions or you can't select them in Odin.) Stick the 3 files (pit, modem,FmInsSD) into a folder on your desktop. (You no longer use the "Jme-hidden" file shown in the pic.)
Attach your tab to your computer, if you have windows 7 the drivers will be installed for you. If you don't you'll need to get them from here.
http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/c...G_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.3.350.0.exe
launch Odin v1.7(if you get an error about some missing .dll file then you need to install the Microsoft .Net framework)
It should look like this once configured correctly:
MAKE SURE BEFORE YOU ADD YOUR FILES-THE TAB IS PLUGGED IN-YOU WILL HAVE A YELLOW COM BOX CIRCLED IN THE PIC IF IT IS CORRECTLY CONNECTED AND READY TO FLASH.
ALSO YOU MUST HAVE A BIG TRANGLE ON YOUR TAB WITH A DIGGING ANDROID (to do this power up the tab while holding down the down volume button)
Looks like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
LOAD THE FILES AS SHOWN IN THE PIC THEY ARE CIRCLED IN RED
MAKE SURE REPARTITION IS CHECKED THE OTHER BOXES ARE CHECKED BY DEFAULT-LEAVE THEM HOW THEY ARE.
ONLY IF YOU HAVE EVERYTHING DONE. (DOUBLE CHECK)
HIT START
Do not touch anything or use your computer it takes about 5 mins to reboot your tab to the kies sync screen.
your done enjoy!
HIT ME SOME THANKS IF THIS WORKED FOR YOU.
Nice work.
You might want to specify that this is for gsm only as many may not be aware.
I on sprint so I guess I have to wait but it's good too see this kind of work being put out there.
Thanks

Oh...and what is the difference between v1 and v2?
Hi Guys,
I'm from austria and have only one question: since i have flashed my tab to jm6 and higher, the bootloader is protected and it's not possible to go back to stock (in my case: hutchinson 3g austria).
now i have flashed to roto's jme, it work very fine! but he's writing, that's possible to go back to t-mobile stock (usa), no matter the bootloader was signed (protected) before flashing or not.
is there also a way to go back to others stock arround the world??? or is it only possible for t-mobile usa-users? thanks a lot!

I think XDA has provided way more updates than Kies so far.

+1 to Roto's answer. Kies reads your firmware version when you connect the Tab and will only offer you an update if it recognises that there is an upgrade available for the firmware it sees on your Tab. This generally means that if you have flashed pre-release firmware which has development / test codes it won't offer you any of the official production upgrades (or any upgrades usually!). It is possible to fake your Tab's signature in Kies to make it flash official releases over dev/test firmware, do a search on the Samsung Galaxy S forums for how to do this.
Don't think so. So far kies have give me 2 updates. It work amazingly. Now is smother. Just my opinion.

[ROM] i897UCKB1 2-19-2011

This is the stock source DG has for Cog4.
This was downloaded directly from samsung's fus servers. The only thing I have done to it is decrypted it and changed the filename for a simpler upload. I am not responsible for death and destruction caused by flashing this rom bla bla bla...
I'm a noob so I can't really offer any support and couldn't post this in the dev forum because I didn't have permissions.
There is another rom posted in the dev forum that shows a build date of 2-1-2011. Mine should be 2-19-2011.

-removed tethering apk that prevents tethering
-i did not remove any other ATT/Samsung bloat.... wanted to keep it stock and then work from there.

Yeah the recent screenshots in the cog forum are from this. After DG's modding, of course. Not really sure if it is any different than the KB1 already posted in the dev forum but the build date is newer.
How to flash? With odin3? Please post, I'll let my cappy be a guinea pig!
I really don't have a clue how to flash it myself but I invite anyone who does know to post instructions or link the thread here that has all the steps.
This requires ODIN3 to flash.
I downloaded both this and the 2/1/11 version of the file from Dev forum. Uncompressed the zip and the firmware rar file are bit-to-bit identical. So, there is no difference between this and the ones posted in dev forum. All the files inside the rar are timestamped at 1/31/2011 with the exception of cache.rfs which is 2/7/2011 (on both versions).
I've downloaded both this file and the one chainfire linked to; they are identical (and both have homeBinary.tar files dated Feb 7) - and no, I have not flashed either... waiting for reports from others first about the ROM.
Do I need a .pit file to flash with odin3?

Flashed Chainfire's. No problems to report.
So is this even the official 2.2 we've been waiting for? I mean, if they have it done since Feb 7, why aren't they releasing it? And why would it be 2.2 when the Epic just got 2.2.1 today?

No. Only the .tar in the PDA slot.
Why even bother with 2.2 when there are 2.2.1 roms out that are flawless on the captivate.
Sent from my Amazing Captivate using XDA App
I flashed the 2-1 version. Ran into partitioning problems going straight from my Andromeda install. Installed JH2 found here with Odin3 1.81 and used a 512.pit with partition checked then installed KB1 with no pit (pit is only used for partitioning). Then I rooted with Super One-Click and installed the no-verification 3e recovery from here.
It's working, but I just did this to make sure I had working steps so I could help a friend. I'll be going back to Andromeda after playing with this for a while.

The reason to bother with this is every other ROM has given me horrible issues with the phone losing all connection to the cell tower at a random time. The WiFi stays connected, but instead of the signal bars, I get a no connection icon, and I can't use the phone until I reboot it. The pure i897 setup has never had this issue, and it went away when I flashed back the last pure i897 ROM (Cogition 2.3B8).
Related to this same issue is the horrendous drop in battery when the phone loses the connection and constantly searches for it. I've never had it lose much juice when on standby when I had it on an i897 ROM. When using one of these frankenstein ROMs based on other hardware, I would sometimes find my phone almost dead in the morning with connection having been lost sometime at night.
I also hate he fact that none of the other ROMs have figured out how to really use the hardware noise cancellation audience chip we have on our i897. I can't really tell the difference between it being used versus a software solution from the other ROMs, but if I have the chip, by golly I want it utilized.
Going back to 2.2 for 2.2.1 doesn't bother me quite as much as losing key phone functionality and battery life. The phone was a bit snappier on 2.2.1 based perception, and HSUPA looked good in Speedtest results, but in real life usage the 2.2 ROM feels just as nice to use. Inject voodoo lagfix, and it would be a fine daily driver, just like JI6 was many moons ago.
I've flashed this one with odin3, seems to work ok. You have to root again after flash.

AT&T needs couple weeks or even months to fully test the ROM before it can be released. So, it seems anywhere from now to next month, this ROM will be released publically if it is the official ROM. God forbid, if critical issues are found and ROM needs to be rebuild, we have to wait even longer.

It was not tested on i896/i9088 or i9010. If you tested it, please report back.
This package does not contain bootloaders so the risk of bricking your device is very limited (close to zero)
This is Android 2.3.4

Does this mean that I can flash this from Stock 2.2 with its bootloaders?
^ No... U need the GB Bootloaders to run a Gingerbread Rom.
As far I know, there are i9000 Gingerbread bootloader and Captivate Gingerbread/Froyo bootloader, and those two are not competitive to run others ROM.
so... bootloader free version probably prevents hardbricking cappy (black screen of death, JTAG required) whom coming from i9000 ROM but still makes bootloop or cappy-!-pc screen I guess.
1. i9000 ROM -> bootloader included odin package -> fine
2. i9000 ROM -> bootloader free odin package -> hardbricking
3. i9000 ROM -> bootloader free (this thread) CWM package -> bootloop (guess)
4. Captivate Froyo and Gingerbread ROM -> dose not matter bootloader included or not
Please let me know if I am wrong.

I still fail to see why anyone (with a working device) would want to flash using .PIT.... so many things that can go wrong with that....

ARM Trust Zone. (link)
The zeros in the other PIT file is padding.
Which is which, is the padded the one you downloaded or the one comming with the update?
Not sure if the padding it required for flashing, I suppose not, so if they are identical expect for those zeros, they are identical.
The pit "with zeros" is the one I downloaded from the device.
The one without zeros is the one found on the internet (I suppose 29.03.2012 version).
Sent from my Galaxy SIII
The padding is probably done by Odin anyway.

I actually want to reflash everything possibly onto my phone. I believe the modem area is corrupted because I can get data but no talk or text. It's a common issue and people say only sending the device to Samsung will fix it, but the phone is from the UK and I live in the US. How would I go about flashing these with ODIN, and would they do anything? I've tried EVERYTHING possible to fix the issue, including flashing new modems, ROMs, stock ROMs, kernels, formatting partitions, etc.
Im curious if there is a full firmware that will format all data on the phone. Like DATA.IMG in galaxy s2 i9100.
[please can you upload file in the other link hotfile closed please i need this tuto so much i be thankfull

Hey man, don't know if you're still active, since it's what like 6.
However thank you so much for this file. It has saved my bacon.
Just got a new S9, trading in my olddddd S3. Turned it back on before sending it off, and it's modded to ****. Needed to revert it before I sent it back! Could not flash anything to it. Tried with your .pit file. and it's worked perfectly!
Thank you!

After installing CWM and following all steps you mentioned above, still it does not show official and set to counter 1. Anyways I got this resolved by Chainfire Triangle Away
In settings-> Device Status - It still shows Status as "Modified" - Can be only changed to "Normal" by re flashing official ROM
What i really appreciate you for providing deodexed bundled in this ROM, thanks a lot!:good:

Maybe you can add my small mod into your ROM and it may qualify as development?
In any case, thanks for the ROM, otherwise the spell checker mod won't work.

Thanks, but I makes special clear stock deodex without changes, because many people are looking for just the firmware deodeks with root access, without derogation from the flow to change by themselves ...

Haha, it's ok... BTW, a new stock firmware is out. Now, it's XXBLH1. Are you planning to update your files?
P.S. Can you provide other mirrors? Netload links would be great!
