Dear Comunity
I bought recently a Samsung Galaxy Tab, 7, running android 2.2
I come from Windows Mobile device, I was loyal for 8 years to Microsoft. I just made this shift, so far I am happy but I have some worries and questions:
1. Locale and text
under settings, locale and text > I cannot find English Ireland and Italian...
How to add these 2 locales?
2. Brightness: the 4 hardware buttons on the bottom: can the retro-lighting be extended from (current) 4 secs to 20 secs? I could not find any settings..
3. Swype
My Samsung Galaxy tab comes with built-in swype, version 2.5 in English, Chinese, and other languages which I do not need (Malay, Thai, Indonesian, etc).
I have two questions:
1. how to add Italian module? Is it possible?
2. How to remove not relevant languages, like Indonesian and Malaysian, to reduce size?
4. Upgrade to Android 2.3:
- when the upgrade will be available? An estimate?
- will the unit be upgradable?
- if yes, do I need to re-install all software, apps and re-sync my contact database?
Doing a backup with Titanium will solve the problem? I think not, since, after a major upgrades, most app will lose their configurations files which usually is kept within system files and these ones are cleared during and after a major O.S. upgrade. right?
5. Is there a way to sync Outlook 2010's (x32) contacts to my Android Phone? Shall I first sync Outllok 2010's contacts with my account in gmail? then from gmail to the galaxy tab? If so, how to perform the 2 steps?
6. Paid apps: my ipad, my iPhone and my wife's iphone do share my same account. So I can install a paid application on the 3 devices and this is perfectly legal (up to 5 devices, Apple told me). Is the same here, in android world? I mean, if I buy a second android device and link to my same gmail account, will I be allowed to re-download the same application which I bought recently?
7. Cable
I noted that the power charger and the USB cable are 100% identical to those of my iPad: but when I used my iPad charger + cable it does NOT charge my samsung. Viceversa also true: if I use my samsung cable it won't charge my iPad and my iPhone...Does anybody know why? are these 2 cables different in the pin mapping or else?
8.
Is there a risk of damaging samsung device if I, mistakenly, swap the two cables, the Samsung calbe and the iPad cable (they are both black).
9. Can my (wired) PC, linked via samsung cable to my galaxy, provide internet access to my Galaxy Tab?
I am NOT talking about tethering (which is: galaxy tablet providing internet access to PC), I am talking about the opposite!
10. Is there an alternative "Contacts" to the default one in the galaxy?
Thanks a lot and merry Xmas!
Saulo
#3: about swype
Is there a way to update from version 2.5 to latest swype version (2.9)? I have "rooted" my phone, but still cannot figure out:
- where to download the latest swype for samsung tablet
- how to upgrade (step by step procedure is most welcomed!)
Thank you!
Saulo
4. Upgrade to Android 2.3:
- when the upgrade will be available? An estimate?
- will the unit be upgradable?
- if yes, do I need to re-install all software, apps and re-sync my contact database?
We don't know when the upgrade will be available. We've not had a firm 'if' yet, but other Samsung phones are getting upgraded so it's logical to hope. Though many of the 2.3 changes appear to be integrated with the Tab already. I suspect we may just get the 3.0 upgrade when it comes out and skip 2.3.
Updates provided OTA don't wipe any data. People messing around with custom roms often clear to fix issues, but the official upgrades, rare as they are, tend not to hurt user data. Even if they did, most user files are stored on the SDCard that's not touched, and apps can be re-installed with a quick visit to the Market to redownload.

Yes, I've done this on... 3 devices so far. If there is a limit, I've no idea what it is, but it's been easy when logged in on same account to get all my favourite apps back.
7. Cable
I noted that the power charger and the USB cable are 100% identical to those of my iPad
Ah, they're not. It's a PDMI cable for the Tab I believe that's a standard now. Apple have their own connector that, as you've noticed, is incompatible.
8.
Is there a risk of damaging samsung device if I, mistakenly, swap the two cables, the Samsung calbe and the iPad cable (they are both black).
I don't know. Put a bit of tape/dab of correcting fluid to show the difference?
9. Can my (wired) PC, linked via samsung cable to my galaxy, provide internet access to my Galaxy Tab?
I am NOT talking about tethering (which is: galaxy tablet providing internet access to PC), I am talking about the opposite!
Errr... Don't know.
10. Is there an alternative "Contacts" to the default one in the galaxy?
Do a search for contacts manager in the market and see what you like. There's the official Google one. The Galaxy one is decent. Not had a need for anything else.
1. Locale and text
under settings, locale and text > I cannot find English Ireland and Italian...
How to add these 2 locales?
Hmm, where did you get your tab? Should be an Italiano as an option.
And as for English Ireland, what IS that btw? I'm honestly curious as I usually see United Kingdom. Wasn't aware there was an Eire version, what's different?

1. - If there isn't an Italian locale, download More Locales from the Market. But I have also never noticed a seperate locale for Ireland. What's the difference from standard English/UK? Mine (purchased from Carphone Warhouse, manually updated to JMA) has Italiano a good locale option.
2. Brightness - no, there is no option at this time to extend the backlight timeout.
3. Swype - you might be able to download a new language pack from the alps settings, or again, More Locales from the Market might help you out. And don't complain about the size, 2gb is more than enough for any app-whore

Dear Jve...
English ireland is useful to me because I like the regional settings, eg: date in this format: dd/mm/yyyy and not in american format, which is mm/dd/yyyy
Also I like the 24H format provided by English Ireland locale: e.g. 22:46 instead of 10:46pm
Thanks
Saulo
I have an additional question:
In my iPad the market application (called App Store) automatically notifies me when updates are available, for ALL installed application. It also promts me to install ALL of them or SOME of them, and let me choose.
Android, coversely, does NOT prompt me with updates of my applications, when they are available. Am I doing something wrong?
Is there a hidden setting to switch ON such a notification?
If not, is there any available application or widget which automatically notify me of available updates?
Thanks a lot!

Well, dd/mm/yyyy is the standard for the UK too, and you can select 24 hour clock in "Date and Time".
That being said, on my Tab, running JME, I have the English (Ireland) and Italian locales.
You may need to flash a new ROM to do what you want, but proceed with caution if you want to go to the JMx series!

DO you have proper Android Market on your Tab, because that does tell you when you have application updates available via the notification bar.
If you do, when in the Market, press Menu and then Settings and the Notifications.

1. Locale and text
under settings, locale and text > I cannot find English Ireland and Italian...
How to add these 2 locales?
I have the same questions on Languages, Spelling and Keyboard how do I add and remove these languages?
I have a German SGT (Product code DBT with the JK5 firmware) and I can choose Swedish language in the OS but not change Swype, Samsung Keyboard or XT9 to Swedish - how do I add Swedish?
The app Locales 2 in the market seems "fishy" ;-)
/skylt
Dear Dave
Thanks for your insights!
1.
About market application: i think I have the built-in one. the icon is a white-green icon like a small bag with a strap and a green picture of a robot inside the icon
if I open "market" I see that "notify me" is already selected as default
But I still do not get automatically notification...
Of course I can open all the apps and then update them (still in "market"), so my problem is not such a big issue anyway.
dear Dave
You mentioned that I need to burn my samsung tablet device with a new ROM, JME, to obtain English and Italian Locales.
Please can you elaborate a bit more?
1.Where to download it?
2. Will the new ROM be equipped with SWYPE (at least UK, US, Chinese and Italian languages)?
3.
and, most of all, why you said it is risky?
Happy New Year!
SA
I have an additional question:
I am running kies, (it does work, even if I have rooted my tablet...)
Upon clicking on firmware update i receive this message:
"model name GT-P1000
current version: PDA: JK2
Phone: JJ2
CSC: JJ2
This device's version cannot be updated"
My questions are:
1. the message is telling me that I am running the latest FROYO version, thus at this moment there is NO need to update?
2. The message is telling me that I purchased (here in China) a device which will NEVER be able to be updated?
3. The message is saying: I feel you have rooted myself, so you I won't let you update me...
If #2 or #3 are correct, can I update the ROM? what about cooked ROM suitable to my device?
2.
My second question is: does somebody know if my current version is a Korean one? And if so, can I change to an European or American one? In fact I really do not need Korean-language Swype and many asian locale settings...all together eating much memory....
Thanks and happy new year!

1. From these forums - just look in the development section. Roto-JME is probably the one you want since it doesn't replace the bootloader.
2. It comes with Swype, but the original version is better because it works "full screen", so I replaced it. No idea if it supports anything non-English.
3. Any sort of flashing carries risk - in the case of JME, if you use the Samsung packages you will end up with a security-locked bootloader - this may or may not be an issue for you, depending on if you want to run a custom ROM in the future.

Dave

dear all
If so, I will give a try to ROTO JME.
Do I need to reinstall and re-customized all my application? I have Titanium Backup, but I am not familiar with it and never used...
2.
Since Swype is the only think I dislike in my current JJ2 ROM (Singapore) I have these 2 questions:
Is there a way (possibly not very painful one) to:
- unistall malaysia, indonesia languages?
- install italian language?
3.
I have run in a big flaw today!
I received a SMS, my device was LOCKED (for privacy). But when the SMS arrived the device turned on, and, even LOCKED, it showed the content of SMS...this is not acceptable to me.
Is there a workaround? An additional settings?
I use the default Messanging
3b: if of any help, I can unistall the default tool (messanging) and install Handcent SMS, but will this fix my issue? Again, I wish that NO SMS appear on display if in LOCKED mode (password protected mode)
Thanks

Yup, hard reset. You will lose all your settings if you don't back them up but it won't hurt anything.
..i tried the hard reset method..but..the tab still didn't appear..sighz..
Asian version don't have googlemap hence the location button is missing afaik.
Yes it says on the website that Asian version won't have this tab,but is there a way to manually install it? I'm planning to buy mine here in Taiwan but i'm still searching how to flash it from chinese OS to english OS. I'm really new to this stuff,
Touch 3G in Taiwan
Hi BH
You should be able to find some sellers that will convert it to English for you.
If you are in/near to Taipei, check "Nova" (Near Taipei Main Station) down on the lowest floor, there is an official HTC shop and in front of them is a non-official one...while the official one told me it was impossible to get an English version here, the store in front of it said...yeah fine, for a small extra charge they could do all that for me I can't remember how much the charge was, but pretty sure it was about 1000 NT or less. I didn't buy one but if I do, I will probably go back to them to get it.
Oh Thanks for the quick reply.Maybe I'll check that.

No need for that.
Get a registry editor, go to HKLM\Software\HTC\Manila2D\ and change the LocationWidget value from "0" to "1". Soft reset and you should see the location widget.
Additionally I had to install the google maps software, because it was not present on my device and the location widget didn't actually do anything, so you might need to do that too.
I have the latest rom version, purchased from PCCW in Hong Kong for HK$3100. It has the Map Search tab in Touchflo.

Works fine to add the tab
To install the Google Maps Software :
Go to http://m.google.com on your pda (by using IE)
Go to Map and download the software
EDIT : Install it to the MAIN Memory !
I don't have locationwidget in my register!
I have the UK version...
Anyone a idea?
Have you tried creating it manually?
Its works!
But....when I click on the tab nothing happends
Can someone make it works?
As I said, you need to install the Google Maps application.
Go to http://m.google.com/maps and download it from there
EDIT: I forgot to mention that you have to install it to the main memory, not the storage card (we've been discussing that in another thread)
It works great!
I install it on de SD card en now on my device, that was the solution.
Thanks!
I'm having a problem emails in Chinese on my HTC HD. I have 智能输入 installed with the fonts that lets me enter text in Chinese or surf websites.
But when I get emails in Chinese, the subject line comes up fine, but the message itself displays in ASCII, even if I view in UTF-8, and I don't have the option to view in other Chinese encodings.
Is there a component I can install to fix this?
Hi,
I also have an English HTC HD, when I bought it they installed for me:
雅黑字体_14mb , 马兰花全屏手写, and 梅花输入法
and I can see and write Chinese.
I'm also looking for an other pinyin input method, the one I have now is not very convenient for me because when I input in pinyin "hao" the soft propose me characters for "hao, gao, gan" mixed and it is more difficult for me to find the right one...(i'm a french guy and my Chinese is still not very good...)
my solution is with CE-Star installed, and replace the font with the one you liked say msyh, and change the FontLink registry (google it)
and install the SIP you're used to..
that would pretty much done everything
EDIT: you can even change the system language to chinese, meaning displaying almost everything in chinese like you're using a CHS/CHT rom
To any and all of the three of you. I am English but visit Chinaa lot and like to be able to show Chinese characters / SMS messages etc. to taxi drivers etc.
At present, I cannot even show Chinese chacters on my screen (they always come up as ASCII).
Can you explian what:
雅黑字体_14mb , 马兰花全屏手写, and 梅花输入法
is in English and I will try and track it down.
I don't want to replace my SIP or my default language at all - just have Chinese charcetrs display ont he screen.

u got the cab for 马兰花全屏手写 by any chance? i was brought up in the uk so i can't exactly type chinese but i can write a little
雅黑字体_14mb is a Chinese font
马兰花全屏手写 is to hand write, I found it at http://bbs.cnsmartphone.com/thread-441569-1-1.html
梅花输入法 is a pinyin input I found it at http://www.dayhand.com/temp/PlumSIP6VGABeta2.rar
Thank you for the information. I'm sorry to be a pain but since I really can't begin to search for the font:
雅黑字体_14mb
in English, is there any way you could let me know if it is freely available and poiint me in the directin of a download site? I know I'm asking you to do some search for me but I'm not being lazy - I really can't do this on my own.
Thank you in advance for any extra help you can give.
I'm in the same boat. I don't read or write Chinese, but want to be able to display it on a WWE HD. CE-Star corrupted my softkey backgrounds (see here .)
The search continues
Funnily enough I have that same problem with my softkeys and I hadn't even heard of CE Star.
Mine seems to correct itself after every second or third soft reset an d I think was initially caused by trialling AEButtons Plus. Unfortunately, having uninstalled AEB+ many days ago, I wouldn't know which orphan files to look for any more.
Do please update this post if you find an adequate solution to displaying the Chinese fonts. I will do likewise.
In the following website you can find the package I used to display Chinese in the past year or so, on Kaiser and HD, the package also includes an input method but I use touchpal instead for Chinese input.
!!!!!IMPORTANT NOTE!!!!! PLEASE READ BEFORE INSTALL
The msjh.cab is not officially supported on HD, I had to install multiple times to get it working - failed installation result in freeze that you can only get your phone back by HARD RESET! However once it works (restart after the phone without freeze) the problem never comes back, I have tried many many times and combination however cannot find a right combination to bypass the problem constantly..
Because of the problems above, please use it with caution. But I have to say this package in combination with touchpal (which are both free) is the best package for Chinese reading/writing I have tried so far, I have used CEStar and Monster Chinese, both have intermittent problems, compare to the package I am using, although not perfect, but it only gives you headache until you get it installed successfully.
http://www.studiokuma.com/wm/?section=support
(click on the link read "msjh.cab (3610KB)" to download, you will need to check the checkbox and click on the accept button on the popup page to start the download)
Note: you can also download the "droid.cab (1469KB)" on the same site, which will install the "Google Droid Sans Fallback" font, its very pretty and clear.
Fantastic - although scary! Since I am only interested in output rather than input, would it be safer for me to just install the Google Droid font? (I assume this is a Chinese font). And is WinMo clever enough to know that all incoming chinese text can be displayed in this font rather than ASCII or do I need to chnage some things to point it there?
Much appreciated lawrencel... I have ibnstalled only the droid font, and all looks well. It required a soft reset after install and no issues whatsoever.
When I try to download from that site, it gives me a 404 error file not found, can anybody upload it somewhere else. I'm only interested in the fonts only as well, thanks in advance.
edit: I went back to the website and tried to download again, noticed that I forgot to turn javascript block off, now it's download just fine. Works on first attempt, was kind of hesistant to install it after what I have read in this thread, but glad nothing bad happens. My thanks goes to lawrencel for the link.
I just downloaded and installed the "droid.cab (1469KB)" with expectation to be able to display chinese characters as well, and as the result, my HD has restarted by itself more than 10 times and I have not even saw the result yet. Now I have to find a way to uninstall it immediately. No sure what is the problem, but my HD cannot complete the reset process and keep restarting itself.
马兰花全屏手写 is this simplified chinese only?
No way to back out. I have to hard-reset my HD. I would advice you not to install this.
I have never seen such an intrusive software.
No easy way out
Here's a detailed reply I got on another forum :
The problem with IE (and any other browser/email program) is that most mainland chinese web pages are encoded in GB2312. A lot of traditional ones use Big5. The code pages for these charsets aren't included in the standard windows mobile builds. There are a few solutions to this problem:
Install the code pages
Unfortunately easier said than done. The relevant file is called wince.nls, and you can get the right version it if you search for it. However the only way to install it is download a ROM where someone cooked it in, or cook it in yourself.
Install CE-Star
CE-Star has a special hack which installs the full wince.nls file. However I believe it's this hack along with their anti-piracy garbage that makes CE-Star so flaky on many systems. However if reading this content is important to you you're pretty much stuck with this option unless you're technical and enterprising enough to muck with the first option.
I am only interested in simplified Chinese, but given what I've been hearing about CE-Star, I most probably won't install it. Until I find a ROM to download, I will stick with A4 and go check my Chinese mail directly with Opera.
And I'll check whether I can get any replacement email program that can handle Chinese, don't know whether QMAIL does.
Has anyone found so far any trusted method to receive sms, mails, surf web in chinese and keep the system in english??
Has anyone install the msjh.cab file lawrencel is talking about?
So far 2 members has installed the droid file, for one it worked marvellous for the another it was a disaster
Sorry to hear this is still a problem for some. What I didn't realise until a couple of days ago is that CE-Star Suite II is bundled with the Touch HD English version here in HKG. The EULA shows "CE-Star 1.1 License Agreement (05-25-2000)". I haven't installed it (and don't plan to because droid works) it but maybe someone has and can report back for other users.
works partially
with both the sunglobe font and ZTA4_VGA installed, I enter text in Chinese, display Chinese without any problem in Opera, IE, SMS, outlook-synched email, and the subject line of downloaded pop3 emails. Of course Pleco works beautifully, but they have their own system. All of the above in both simplified an traditional characters.
What I still can't do is read the body text of pop3 emails, which drives me crazy. I suspect this has to do with GB-encoding (I use simplified Chinese), which does not seem to be supported by either FlexMail or the WM native mail.
The weird thing is, I have an auto-forward from my pop3 email to Outlook at the office. After synching, the emails that come out garbled in my pop3 inbox display perfectly in the outlook inbox. It looks like Outlook does perform the GB to UTF-8 conversion automatically.
I am a noob so please don't jump all over me if it do this wrong or post in the wrong place. That being said and out of the way:
I am living in korea and bought my X1 a few days ago. I don't read korean to well so i flashed an english rom to it. Everything seems to work fine except the messageing service. I can send sms out but i can't get any responces.
I know that SKT uses it's own sms service or something like that...
So my question is: Is there a way to change only the language of the OS and leave eveything else the same?
I would like to keep the stuff that came with the Korean rom (sms service, korean dictionary the panels, etc.) just put the OS in english.
I'm in the same boat and I'd be much obliged if you could say what you found out, or if anyone else can offer some advice.
I bought the X1 in Korea. I love the phone, but like a lot of people here, I wanted an English language ROM. The problem is, like both of you guys have stated, MS-SMS doesn't work properly here. Sending works fine, but you cannot receive any messages.
After a lot of fiddling around, I think the problem has to do with the rilphone.dll file in the Windows directory. The solution is to extract the rilphone.dll file from the stock KOREAN rom and overwrite the file in the English rom. The problem with this is that with most of the downloadable custom roms, once you replace the file, the phone radio stops working, and you get no service at all. Perhaps the solution is to build a custom ROM and cook the rilphone.dll file from the Korean ROM into the custom ROM, but I don't have the skills or time to do it.
I actually got it working on a very old custom ROM, but the ROM itself was buggy and crappy so I ditched it. I think just overwriting the file in the old ROM worked because it didn't have any signed cert built in.
Anyway, I would also love to be able to solve this problem. I actually can read Korean, but the Korean ROM is super bloated with SK Telecom's crappy software and it is very slow.
EDIT: I would even be willing to pay someone a reasonable amount of money to solve this problem. I can provide the Korean rilphone.dll file too!
Does anyone have any advice??? Please???
Honestly I would pay as well. From what I can tell, the most "advanced" phones over here are the Xperia, the Omnia, and the Haptic 2. I can only assume the Omnia will have the exact same problems as the Xperia (being another WinMo phone) and I'm not really eager about the Haptic 2 since I can't seem to find any information at all about it (reviews, forums, addons, extensions, etc etc etc).
I misspoke earlier when I said I was in the same boat; I haven't yet bought a phone, but I'm in the market. I was just at a few shops yesterday messing around with these phones. And not being able to receive texts is (or alternately, not having an English OS) is a deal breaker.
I had this problem as well, except mine was receiving chinese text messages. What you have to do is go into the sms area and click Tools>Options.
It takes you to the screen with all your accounts. Tap on the SMS/MMS and you should check the "use unicode when necessary" box.
That's how I solved that problem
Unfortunately, with the current OS and SK Telecom network, the solution is not that simple. There is a group of Korean guys at a Korean Xperia forum working feverishly to solve this problem, and I understand they have made some progress. But the fix is still a long way off. The people here are probably more experienced and skilled at WinMo.
Yeah, Koream carriers have been deploying their own proprietary text mechanisms.
Long story short, there is a way you can use a cooked ROM with some helps from local hackers. It's a project to incorportate local carrier's structure into the old, good, usual MS-SMS.

1. delete mms_filter.lnk from your startup folder
2. apply x1-mssms.cab
That's it.

Thanks for that link and the info. Does that mean that I can flash a custom English ROM, apply those two steps and be able to send and receive SMS in Korea?
SMS problem in Korea
Hi guys,
I found out this problem after i bought the X1 and changed the ROM to english, to sum up i am in the **** as you....
I am also ready to pay a reasonnable money to whom will find a solution to this problem. Friends sent me so many messages but they are still waiting for my reply...hehe
Please write me if any news, i am still searching on french, korean and english websites...
Thanks!
Korea is a great country, and very technologically advanced. But they seem to make it very difficult for foreigners. In the process, they also unintentionally make it difficult for their own citizens, because most Koreans I know would prefer to use MS-SMS over the crappy, slow, bloated SKT application.
In my case, I don't even need to be able to send SMS in Korean, although that would be great. As long as I could send English SMS, and receive and read English and Korean SMS, that would be fine. I'm hoping there will be a solution to this stupid problem soon.
Other than this issue, however, I love the X1. I recently bought an Omnia and it was OK, but when I found out the X1 was released in Korea, I ditched the Omnia immediately and bought the X1
Correct. I applied it today and am quite happy with it.
Please note it's still beta though.

Thanks for the response. Could you tell me which ROM you installed?
I'm still using the factory ROM, only changed SKT-SMS with MS one.
Other people who cooked their own ROM seemed to be okay.

Thanks, but I think this only works on the stock Korean ROM. It won't work on an English ROM.

No, as far as I know, this hack is ROM-agnostic.

Oh my God!! It worked! Thank you very much. There are still some bugs, but the functionality is there, so that's all I can ask for now.
Palmwangja, 감사합니다!
Unfortunately, although I can receive messages now, the characters are all square blocks, even with the Unicode setting checked. Any ideas?
EDIT: Just not working right. Even after installing Korean language support, for some strange reason, if someone sends me an SMS in English, I can receive the message but I get the square blocks as text. Can't receive Korean messages at all. Back to square one.
Can someone please upload x1-mssms.cab to rapidshare or email it to me?
I can't seem to login to the Naver board to download the file...I would really appreciate it!
UPDATE 1: Got the file. Thanks anyway. We'll see how the install goes. About to run on stock Korean ROM.
UPDATE 2: Seems to work fine on stock Korean ROM. Haven't tried MMS yet. The author of this hack appears to have posted a list of bugs with this first beta (including possible problems when sending/receiving messages while roaming) and indicates that he will post a second beta (which will probably be the final) soon.

The hack works fine on the stock Korean ROM. I tried it. I want to use MS-SMS, but the more important thing for me is using an English ROM. The hack doesn't work correctly in the English ROM, even after hacking the registry, linking fonts, etc. I can read Korean fine, but the Korean ROM really sucks. It is just slow and bloated.

Rogatsby, this is a pared-down Korean ROM...
Hope you will like it. quite fast, no additional garbage. ms-sms hack works greatly.
Hi -
I've had my HTC HD2 for a few days now, and I'll be putting my sim card in and switching to full use from tomorrow. My network is Vodafone UK. I just had a few questions and would really appreciate if someone could answer? I have already got through the main stickies and done some tweaks by the way.
1. Vodafone haven't released any official updates for the firmware themselves, and HTC doesn't allow Vodafone UK users to download them of their own website (other than hotfixes). So I just wanted to know, what am I missing out on by being stuck on the original firmware that the phone came with? DO the official updates make a big difference?
2. Auto-rotate seems to only work on some applications. Can I get it working on the home screen and ALL applications?
3. What can I do to improve my typing? I've set it to T9 and I'm slowly adjusting to it but it's still quite slow. Also, when is there anyway to automatically improve grammar? For example when I start sentences they do not automatically start with a capital letter and I have to do that manually...
4. I get an error with the camera/camcorder if Opera 10 Beta is installed. The camera will only work when it's uninstalled. Is there anything I can do to get around this?
5. Any must-have applications/games?
6. Is there anyway I can edit the registry on the HD2 through my PC?
Thank you!
I think if you search ... you will get the answer for most of your questions
1. Official Updates Makes the operating system more stable.... i upgraded to 1.48 and its much more stable.
2. you can add almost all programs to autorotate using BSB tweak (except home screen)
3. Typing is a universal problem ... search and you will find several topics and tweaks
4. Havent tried opera 10 yet... as it doesnt support pinch to zoom (multitouch)...
5. Must have apps (Skyfire.. wayyyyy faster than opera)
must have games (experiment 13, and xtract) both available to download on xda...

Thanks for the quick reply.
1. Do you know if there's anyway for me to get around the Vodafone block and upgrade then?
Also I can't find the setting to disable vibration while typing. Any ideas?
And also, any answer to question 6 which I just added?
Thanks

2. Home screen? No. Applications? Yes.
Refer to tips thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638
3. There are tips in the above thread. Phone will auto-capitalize after a full stop. Pressing space 2 times will put a . and then a space.
6. Not that I know of.

1.Yes. Gold card. I haven't done it, but browse this forum, there are plenty instructions.
2.Start button > Settings > Personalize (1st option) > Vibration
Translated from PT menus so names might not be accurate.

Thank you again for the answers.
Sorted out the vibration now.
Regarding the gold card and changing the ROM... how would I pick a ROM to change to? And also, if I do change ROMS will I lose all my data?
Thanks

You will loose all data. Backup first.
There are ROMs for all tastes. Like picking a wallpaper, you must choose one yourself.
My advice would be, install the HTC original ROM (1.48).

Thank you. What is the recommended way of backing up before updating ROM?
Also, will updating to the official ROM include the radio ROM too or would I have to do that separately?
And finally... how would I download the official ROM still, even after gold card, surely the phone would still have a Vodafone serial number?
The Radio is probably not included in the rom.
You can download the rom from HTC site.
Ways to backup? Active Sync, MyPhone, GMail, etc (I use gmail for contacts and calendar for e.g. and do the rest by hand)

Okay I see. Should I upgrade radio too? Is that beneficial?
Thanks
Yesterday i flashed my wife and my phones with MP7. We both have HTC HD2 T-mobile editions. First i flased with XBmod ROM and found while it was brilliant, Chinese isnt supported.
We installed about 100 apps from the marketplace that allowed us to input chinese, but everytime we sent messages to each other, all we got was a message with some characters, some weird symbols and lots of squares.
As we both live in China, its kinda importants for us to be able to read and write Chinese.
Previously we used WM6.5.5 and we had to install two .cab files (1 for the chinese font, and 1 for the input keyboard) I know MP7 is different and uses .xap files (hense its not backwards compatable), but ive seen on the 'net and here that the chinese fonts are in MP7, but as they are 14mb, most chefs take them out.
Does anyone know of a ROM that has the fonts is embedded or is there a way i can get a modded ROM and put the fonts in myself?
Thanks in advance!
Try YukiXDA ROM.
I remember him testing chinese on WP7.
Brilliant, thanks for the tip. ill check it out!
Not sure if he has stopped support, but i downloaded the ROM with chinese in it from Yuki and didnt support Chinese, but thanks anyway!
Its WP7 not MP7.
Yes thanks. saw my mistake
For what it is worth, I was in a public relations office in Taipei that represents Microsoft Taiwan. One of the managers of a Microsoft account has an HTC HD7. Microsoft Taiwan sent him a program that allows him to read and write Traditional Chinese on his HD7. I am not sure if it would support Simplified Chinese, or if it would work on an HD2 with WP7, but you might try contacting either Microsoft Taiwan or Microsoft China and ask them about your problem. Otherwise, it seems that your only course is to wait until the Mango update is ported to HD2, as I understand that update does support Chinese.
Thanks for that info, ill check it out. We are currently using the "i'm Chinese app". Its ok, but to write an email, sms or search the 'net, you have to open the app, type what you want, then it opens the normal web or sms or email, insert the chinese, then send! i do miss the keyboard from WM6.5 i had!
My next question is trying to get Windows phone device manager to work! i installed it (as admin), plug my phone in, close Zune and wait. WPDM says "connecting to Nips HD2", so it knows my phone is there. It then says "Nips HD2 plugged into USB", but doesnt show the total storage, cell network or battery info and when i click on sonething in the list (manage apps, explore files etc) it says connecting for about 5 mins, then fails with "couldnt connect to Nips HD2". My phone is hacked(?) with chevron, i checked. WPDM also seems to fail to install touchxplorer on my phone. (on the WPMD post it says it should auto install the first time you use WPMD)
Ive read all the pages in the XDA DEV post about WPDM and nothing has worked, ive tried their website, no luck. Ive even contacted themm but no reply. Do i need to give them a donation to make it work, or am i missing something and being a complete noob?
Any suggestions and/or abuse would be great!
Thanks!
