Full reset (inc SD card) - Nexus S General

So the full reset as performed at recovery doesn't wipe the contents of the SD? What does then?
How do reset everything to out of the box state, including SD content?

format the "SD card" and then wipe
or if your paranoid you can use a encryption software to completely destroy all data

Are you meaning connect to PC and mount as a drive then perform the format as you would any other disk drive?

You might try the "Erase USB Storage" option in Settings --> Storage. That way you don't need a PC. Then you can do a reset from recovery to bring the system back to stock.
Hopefully that's what you are looking for.

that is a huge typo right?

fastboot oem unlock will wipe the phone and the sdcard data.
fastboot oem lock puts it back into a locked bootloader state.

How to reset everything to out of the box?

Just a quick query before I even get my Nexus S ...
Is it possible to completely reset everything to out of the box condition using a similar method to the HTC devices of holding the down button whilst turning on the phone to access the boot loader screen?
I want to know I can return this if necessary after it's been turned on and configured without leaving any trace of use or my data.
have you installed a custom recovery? or are you on the stock recovery? You can turn off your phone, and then while phone is off hold volume up + power . This will get you into bootloater mode, then you can select recovery. Once you are in recovery hold volume up + power, then it will give you recovery settings, from here you can wipe data.

Thanks, I haven't even received the phone yet so until I have had chance to check it out and make sure it suffers none of the issues cropping up here it will be totally stock - no modding whatsoever.
Will the method above set the phone to out of the box condition with no traces of use?
I gather that once a custom recovery has been installed there is no way to remove it at this time, is that right?

Goto Settings, Privacy, select Factory Data Reset.
This will clear all private data off the phone, whether you're rooted or not, whether you have custom recovery or not.
Edit: to your second question, yes, at present, there appears to be no way to remove the custom recovery. They'll figure that out sooner or later.

yes, the above method will reset everything. You can even reset to stock from the phone itself, by going to storage, then clear storage. Then i believe in privacy settings you can wipe phone. At this time, there is no way to go back to stock recovery once a custom recovery is flashed. But eventually google will release the stock recovery images that are flashable through fastboot
Thanks guys!
Been told I can turn the phone on but not make any calls or add anything to memory - not sure how the hell you can try a phone out with that kind of restriction.
As long as I can clear EVERYTHING if I need to return it that's fine!
Ah, good point about the sdcard. In prior phones, I just pulled mine out and moved to the new phone. You will want to wipe the sdcard as part of removing all traces of you on the phone.

There IS no SD card in the Nexus S (not removable anyway) ;-)
I assume the method above will clear the mass memory.

I'm pretty sure, based on past experience with Galaxy S, Nexus One, and HTC EVO 4G, that a Factory Reset from the Settings menu, or from the CWM recovery does not touch the partition that is mounted as /sdcard (whether it's internal or external).
I'm not willing to factory reset my NS at this time to prove the point, though.
In my opinion, to totally reset your phone (for non-rooted), you should:
/Settings/Storage settings/Erase USB storage
/Settings/Privacy settings/Factory data reset
If you're going to take the Recovery method, then you'd
Wipe all data
format sdcard

serious force closes with everything

more problems
everytime i boot into my phone, no matter what ROM, i get loads and loads of force closes, everything force closes pretty much
i cannot do anything because of them, anyone know how i can possibly fix this?
i think my phone is slowly dieing after all these problems i have had, but someone might be able to help
have tryed hard reset, factory reset, none work

Flash speedmods kernel with odin. Go to recovery and wipe. After that choose advanced clockwork and format system, cache and data. Restart.

ah bugger, guess i'll have to send my phone back or something.

[Q] I *think* I bricked it.

So I was working on installing a custom rom, and based on my experience (And some help from the walkthrough) flashing devices, I booted my custom recovery and proceeded to begin the factory reset.
Now with my SGS, which I've flashed about a bajillion times, I typically also formatted system, data, and cache, followed by the Dalvik cache. I did so.
After doing this, the tab will not boot. (To be expected)
After confirming it's non-bootableness, I went back into recovery to flash the ROM. However, when I attempt to choose the file, it tells me "Can't mount SD card".
I went into mounts and storage, mount SD-card, same error.
mount USB storage. "This kernel does not support USB storage"
*Apply facepalm here*
Any advice? Is there a way for me to push it through ADB? Download mode?
I read somewhere that you can do a factory reset by plugging in a keyboard and pressing the "Home" button.
I just cannot remember which thread it was but it was a few days ago.
Update: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14022478 try this thread. Post #5 has the complete procedure for the factory reset.
Good luck!
You should have read everything before trying. If you had, you would know that this happens sometimes and its because some SD cards aren't compatible with clockwork mod.
Try a different card.
-_-
I didn't have my micro SD in.

[Q] Unable to factory reset Verizon Xoom with CMW and Tiamat Hammerhead

Hi.
I am trying to prepare my Xoom for the 4G upgrade, and I've backed everything up using TitaniumBackup, but am now stuck attempting a factory reset.
I can boot into CWM (3.2.0.0 (R4c)), but I can't perform the factory reset. It is unable to mount /cache. Or /system, /sdcard, /data.
Is there anything else I can do to reset this thing?
I'm running Tiamat Hammerhead.
Thanks,
John

This sounds simplistic, but make certain you flash the correct stock images for your exact device, especially if you plan to relock.

Well it is a pretty simple process, Motorola even shows you the commands to use on their website... But, yeah, use the correct images for your device.
You can get them from: http://developer.motorola.com/produ...utm_source=supportforums&utm_term=unlockboard
Requires the USB drivers to be installed and the Android SDK Platform Tools for Fastboot. But it's guaranteed factory when you're done.
One additional quick detail: If you are just trying to do a "data wipe/factory reset" you may need a MicroSD card in the slot. Mine would not wipe until I put one in. Just a little 2GB was all I used and then it wiped happily! Don't really know why it needed it, but hey. Quick, easy fix.
Thanks. Downloading the HRI66 now (MZ600 - XOOM with Wi-Fi + Verizon 3G).
39 or 66 should work for me, correct? I don't see any difference listed.
thanks,
john

Hmmm. Didn't try that. Tried without an SD card. Then flashed the latest CWM, them removed the SD card and tried the factory reset again.
Maybe I'll try putting the SD card back in and wiping before reverting to stock.

Not sure but my guess would be yes, it is a security measure, if your phone is stolen and someone unlocks the bootloader the data is deleted so they have no access to it, logic would therefore say it should be wiped.
If you have the SD set as removable rather than internal you can just pull it to keep things safe.
