Removing SD card but Android still runs- - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I just found out today that even if i remove my SD card , Android doesnt freeze up and I can still make phone calls . This is SUPERRAM by darkstone btw. Is this normal ? Even after I put the SD back in everything is still ok.

I guess your build is called "SuperRAM" meaning that Android runs from RAM memory - now that part with SD Card out and it's still working - why don't you test it out more - I am sure you will find some apps that will not work properly due to SD Card missing from where it should be ... but it is still good to know.

yah its normal
all the system files including phone.apk are all in ram
but things in data.img will not. try out any apks and you will see the force close window then

Im guessing this could also be good in some way. Adding music or whatever in the SD without having to reboot the phone . Lol nice.

You can do this without having a RAM build

Nope. Try Settings -> SD Card and phone storage -> Unmount SD card.
Then.. Nothing....
I can't think of any good reasons to unmount/remove the SD while in Android though. This is because you will have to reboot to see the files anyway (most the time) if they even copied correctly.

Problem problem problem Android lock my micro SD class 2 16gb

How could it be possible I always used my 2gb micro SD but last night I made the decision to say bye to winmo n started using my 16gb. So I transfers the android folder to it used it n all was good then I wanted to back up all of my winmo files so i remove the SD card from my phone n place it in my card reader..n said to reformat the card..I HAVE NO ACCESS TO MY SD CARD.. I can't even format it some how it got protected...even my phone days to formatted but is never successful...ANY ADVISE THANK YOU

ive got a sd problem too. i ever used the same 16gb class2 microsd card tu run android builds and store winmo and android data. last night ive tried to switch from darkstone to matcc android build. i reformatted the sd card, put the files on it (only android folder nothing else) and started android. everything was fine but i´ve got a bsod(radio 2.12.50_2 and german stock vodafone rom). then ive tried another android build but i got the same error(doesnt ever got bsod before). later android didn start at all(every build). then ive tried chuckys rom with matcc vers. 1.5 and ive got the bsod problem again. tried 2 other builds and now andriod doesnt start and i cant even connect my hd2 to my pc(bootloader doesnt connect too) but chucky rom boots correctly. everytime ive tried another build i reformatted my sd card to fat32. hope someone can help me, sorry for bad english.
i got this problem now too. android somehow writeprotected my sd card so i can't put files on or take files off anymore...it's basicallly made my 16gb card useless. can't format or anything. tried through windows mobile, pc, and android...nothing works. anybody know how to fix it?
Same thing happened to me. My class 2 16gb card is now locked and ive found no way to unlock it.
Not that I really liked that card anyway, but it was nice to have so much storage space.
thats no problem. On your adapter for your micro sd card, there is a lock on the side of it. Make sure that it is in the up position. Basically in the unlock position, then it wont be write protected.
No, your not understanding. Its not the physical lock on the adaptor, its a logical lock on the Micro SD itself.
The Micro SD card comes up as locked no matter what I use to try and format, or delete etc.
I've googled like mad trying to find a way to fix it even installing Ubuntu to see if another OS could do it, but everything fails.
Same here I came to a conclusion. That there are some files in the SD card....what was the last buid u were using before this happened...the best solution. For this should be with an android. Phone and astro file management explore the SD card...unlucky. me none of my friends have an android device

try to overwrite the android folder and start it with another build and then format after a sucessfull start.

I tried replacing android folder using a card reader but that didnt work either... i'm going to try that storage tools suggestion..but i doubt anything will work. CMD finished and said that the disk was unreadable after finishing 99%.
Ok
Sounds like corrupted sectors or damaged disk to me
Put the card into a windows pc and run scandisk on the card, make sure you check : fix errors automatically and scan for bad sectors

MAKE PROPER BACK UP!
i have bricked my phone at first tried again it worked
Use titanium back-up to check if a2sd has been enabled.
Your internal may still appear full after you apply the script since it creates a fail-safe in the int memory you may delete the not so imp apps..
And Be sure to thank the dev who made it if it works for you.

You cant, since its a script and not the actual thing we cannot select which apps would stay in sd and which would stay in the internal memory.
All the apps are loaded to sd card by default.
It doesnt make much of a diff cause even if you remove the sd card there is a fail-safe.
the apps are located at: system/sd/apps

Its not turning on? Then its stuck in infinite boot loop..
Sometimes it takes 3 reboots to start the phone but the phone starts.
Try to remove sd card then start the phone. Then insert the sd card. Then you can use the script again to uninstall app2sd...then you can reformat the ext2 partition and try to app2sd again or leave the phone if ur scared
If it doesn't your only option is to restore using SEUS

big enough. i say its 800mb free
Yes , You have 800 mb but on general partion.Check out how much space you have on ext partitions.
I check it in the easiest way without anyy software.I'm connectin WF to my TV and get in USB and there are few drivers to choose then check info about and here it is.
Or with some kind of software in PC
Internal 25mb free, External (SD) 837mb free.
I advice you to make a quite bigger Internal and then check out'em

Moving to SD does not move the whole app to SD many times. Internal memory is occupied too, maybe 25 mb is too less? What's the exact error msg that its giving?
Have the same problem.
As far as i know APP2SD doesnt use the ext partition (just the Darktremor Apps2SD does) - but the APP uses the Froyo/Gingerbread buildin function and just saves some amount of the Apps to the SD card.
Somehow it worked for me if i try it a 2nd time (or after restarting the device in begin - after it worked fine for me).
But sometimes if I install apps it also tells me - not enough space - and i have 37MB internal left - even the app is just about 500kb.... - anyway it also works if i just try agains ome seconds later.
Annoying - but perhaps also works for u

Could you also tell us how 2 make bigger internal !??! If I dont want to disasemble my device and replace a chip?
As far as i know u just can get bigger internal space by moving apps or systemparts to the SD card... and thats where he has problems.
(But yes many custom roms already do it a bit: dalvik cache,.. - but u need 2 reflash another rom.... not part of this discussin atm i think)
i didnt have any problems with 2.3 nightly 49# and other nightlys or even 2.2 roms. But with new 2.3 RC1 i have these problems. so im moving to other rom

Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA Premium App
What ROM are you using? And, do u use Apps2SD?
define memory
are you talking about storage memory , or ram?
reduction in storage shouldn't impact on performance, that is unless space is very tight and Android is constantly clearing caches.
What types of apps are you installing?
widgets and and service apps like news/weather, gmail , facebook , twitter etc etc will consume memory while they sync data. If you have several such apps the relatively constant syncing would impinge on overall performance.
if you do have many service apps first try increasing the time between syncs in its settings if you are still suffering then consider un-installing some of them.
re-reading your post I'm going to assume you are installing apps to external sdcard , and not an sd-ext partition.
this will still reduce the internal storage as only the apk is stored on the external sdcard the dex files ( aka dalvik-cache ) are installed on the internal storage.
but it is still unlikely a direct relationship between free space on internal and performance.
the apps on sdcard are stored in encrypted containers this might be causing the overhead, but in all honesty I have never actual used the external sdcard for apps so I can't say what the overhead is or even if it enough to be relevant, but many swear apps to sd-ext is better than sdcard so there may well be something in that theory..
I agree with Effdee. But more info would be beneficial for assistance. As previously asked, what ROM are you using? Is your SD partitioned? So on & so forth....
I don't know if this information will help or not

How many apps did you installed? And how much internal storage you have left?
Also, how did you partitioned your SD Card? (IE: Cache, EXT, and FAT32)
Also, go to Setting > Applications > Manage Applications
Look at the the SD card tap to see how many apps the you downloaded are in that area. If none of them is there, that means that you install them in the internal storage. You can move some of them to SD card depending on the apps by going to the Downloaded tap and open each one up and click in "Move to SD Card".

this idea of putting swap on a compressed ramdisk is crazy, and it just doesn't work

well, ... I do not agree fully. In certain situations, especially when there are many services running in background, it can help, *but* swappiness is to be set very low. So only almost unused parts od the memory are swapped out to compcache and can remain there ...
Also see shadowch31 for a CC script and see if that helps. Stops, cleans and restarts CC I believe. Just throwing out ideas. Every phone works different. Just play

As far as I know, single pages of a process will be swapped out, not the complete processes. So if a process has for example a lot of static data, which is not used during processing an activity, so this part can be swapped out to compcache. This will be compressed, so the phone has more memory available to start / hold in memory another process ... Especially when fast switching between processes is needed (launching sms-app when receiving a sms?) this *can* be an advantage.
Without compcache this process probably is to be re-launched, which most likely takes more time than switching tasks in memory.

swap is not very smart about what pages are swapped
end of the day swap was a fudge for linux's poor memory management
and as I said
with the cyanogen rom cc was on, I turned it off and things were much better
you can try and convince me otherwise, but seeing as I have already compared cc on and cc off and find cc off to be much better I doubt you will change my mind

yes. Now I don't have to waiting to long again to open or to close the app. Because now I have a spacious memory. And I think maybe I'll try to use the radio that you tell me to increase the memory

Gallery photos broken, apps not found - SD failing?

Dear all,
I have a N9005 (eu) with 4.4.2 stock. Never rooted.
Since a couple of weeks, I notice a strange behavior. Quite often I find broken thumbnails in the stock Gallery app, sometimes the actual photos I have take are not visible.
At the same time, it happens that I download and install an app and it won't run, giving me an error in com.appnamewhatever. After a restart, I still see the link to the app on the home, but as I click it says app not installed. After I reinstall I can often run it np.
It gives me the feeling that the internal SD Card is dying. Is that possible? Can I run some tools/fixes to prevent or check it? (with no root required)
Thanks.

1. Take a look if your photos and pics are in SDCard.
2. Take a look if you have the apps installed in your SDCard too (Aplication manager -> SD Card -> App marked to move to SDCard)
3. You will have to take off the SDCard and try making photos and installing new apps (change your SDCard for other new if this go ok)
Tell me what result do you have in your tests :highfive:
Man, you are right. I had not moved any app intentionally to the external SD Card so I did not think that would be the case. But that's what happened, the failing apps were on the external SD and so are the photos. It's a SanDisk Class 10 64 Gb.
So no way out other than substituting it?

The corrupted photo's on the SDcard are a problem directly related to KitKat's increased security. It affects all KitKat devices. Any photo's on the SD randomly corrupt over time. The only solution is to put them on the internal memory.
The apps are a new one though. I've had apps suddenly become semi-uninstalled because I was dumb enough to mess with the Android_secure folder, but not with the errors after install.

Jeez that's crazy. I triedo to run a chkdsk on the card from windows (in a SD reader) and it got me a gazillion errors.
So now I proceeded to salvage what I can. I will try to format it (in the phone? in windows? still not sure about it) and see what happens.
Luckily I was able to salvage 99% of the photos.
I just remembered that I did something very unortodox, more or less at the same time problems started: I removed the SD Card with the phone still on. Yes, you can barely do it without removing the battery... I though "let's see if something bad happens". Maybe it started to corrupt the FAT or similar.
Anyway, please feel fee to point me to a thread or good article on this, I find information very scattered. Is there any advantage t oformat it in FAT32, NTFS or exFAT (assuming I can even choose)?
Thanks

I find it fairly easy to do. It's also perfectly fine, as long as you unmount it first in settings.

Fat32 is the common format IT doesn't allow for filesizes over 3.9GB, so if you intend to use t for films, use exFAT.
NTFS can't be read without root. Don't use it.
exFAT is practically the same as FAT32, except that it allows for larger filesizes.

Thanks for the infos. At that time I obviously did it without unmounting it first (no fun in life without some screw-ups). Regarding the formatting, I seem to be unable to do it from the phone at the moment.
It unmounts it, says checking it. But doesn't format it. Trying from windows now...
Here are some updates.
Formatting in either windows (stock function) and phone was a no-go.
However, I dowloaded and installed SD Association Formatter:
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/
and that did the trick. Now the SD Card is finally empy.
Also I strongly suggest using this tool instead of windows proprietary, because it's simply much much faster.
I will try and load it back with the stuff I had before, including pics, and see if I get the corrupted data again.
A difference is now that the chkdsk tool from windows says that no errors are found, unlike before. Let's see how it goes.
Final update to close thread:
The SD Card, a SanDisk UHS Class 10 SDXC, 64 Gb, had been declared dead.
It was possible to write data on in with seemingly no errors (from chkdsk) but all the data turned out to be simply corrupted.
Will send for replacement.
I have seen many comments on this card failing, so I would not recommend it. However, I think that this case it was not KitKat's fault.
Thanks for the inputs.
Do not blame the card yet
I am having the same issue with the same card, but it is limited to Note 3(N900).
Every now and then it becomes inaccesible, the photos appear broken, music player stops etc. It is not related to use of any particular app. When it happens, the card is still visible in Settings/Storage, just no app including mounting has access to it. What helps, is the old reboot fix
Happened on official KK, as well on LP. Device is stock unrooted N900.
The card is working without any problems in Note 1,even in Galaxy duos, and there are no issues writing/reading in windows nor linux. Something tells me that hardware is to blame.
