Where are all the roms - Nexus S General

Nexus s has been out for like 2 weeks and almost every phone is getting a port of some sort of gingerbread or nexus s clone but where is sense ui for ns or touch wiz or anything

Sure its been 2 weeks, but keep in mind its the holidays.... The devs could:
a) work on custom ROMs
b) spend time with family like normal people

Are you seriously complaining that there aren't enough roms after 2 weeks (never mind it being christmas and stuff)?? Wow, your sense of entitlement is quite amazing! Never mind bothering to recognize all the good stuff that has come out already (cyanogen alpha, modaco r2, voodoo kernel, 2.3.1 update ports, market fixes, rooting scripts etc)
Think about it, everyone is dying to get the newest google software update (kinda the reason most of us got this phone) so it's quite understandable everyone is working on gingerbread ports. Why on earth would you expect the same enthusiasm for downgrading by porting sense or touch wiz to a phone already running android 2.3? Not saying it won't happen but it's understandably not the first thing on everyone's priority list (yours excluded).
Oh and thanks for taking the time to read the guidelines for what belongs in the development section. It's people like you that make xda great!

^^^^^ Ding ding ding we have a winner!
I'm sure we'll start seeing alot more attempts at SenseUI/TouchWiz ports once those phones receive their 2.3 upgrades.

I hope some of our Nexus S devs latch on to this one. It would be very cool for us to test it out.

as far as i know. they didnt even port the old htc sense. you want them to port the new one ?
yeah i dont think so. they will port it to desire hd or hd2 or whatever htc device. but i highly doubt you will see it on galaxy S or Nexus S since they are made by samsung.
i could be wrong. but i dont see it happening. at least not any time soon.
besides. isnt getting htc sense or any launcher defeats the purpose of owning a nexus S ? people bought it for pure google expieriance. if you didnt buy your nexus S for that reason then you made the wrong choice of a phone

Actually sense is already ported to the NS. Where have you been? Isn't the NS a dev phone? Isn't Android open source? What's wrong with variety? You act like if SENSE, TOUCHWIZ or Blur roms are ported you wouldn't try it. If you don't like SENSE then you shouldn't of opened my post. Its not like the title didn't speak for itself. Thanks.

I agree with the pure google experience part but honestly, if somebody puts their efforts into porting sense and creating another rom for the development section.
I don't see the harm of having another rom. Ns dev needs more roms. If you don't like it, don't use it. Android is filled with open customization.

Thank you for this statement. We need more variety! What's wrong with choices? People change their minds all the time. We all know we would at least try a sense, touchwiz, etc port if it became available. That doesn't mean we would use it as a daily driver, but its nice to know if you want a different rom one week or the next you can switch.

Umm..so far all the Gingerbread roms that are out are still having some issues...low in- call volume, no hardware acceleration(videos), no flashlight...etc...and aren't quite fully functional as Froyo is just yet..which is perfectly understandable...
I was just wondering if your up coming rom will still have those issues....or if you are going to blow our minds with a fully functional Gingerbread rom for the Fasciante...

Completely understand your frustration. Unfortunately, if the devs don't have a full, stable source drop to work with, we really can't hold the current crop of common /generally recognized GB issues against them. Heck, they're probably more frustrated about it than the rest of us
OP, I look forward to the upcoming release and maturation of your project!

Official ICS 4.0 ota for nexus s 4g before late galaxy nexus.

I agree with this, but the amount of resources and testing at google's disposal far outweighs that of your average rom builder.
Not only that, but I'm positive that Google has specification and performance information on the phone's hardware that the average ROM developer will simply never have. I agree, custom ROMs are fun to play with, but for everyday use, you'll never beat a stock ROM.

I'm on kang 15 and steve.garons latest kernel. You and I have very different opinions of stable. Mine is top notch. No hiccups. If u want to wait, by all means, I was...then broke down and the current roms are fantastic.
It takes less than 5mins to root, make a backup, copy that backup yo PC, then unlock boot loader and flash a new rom. If u don't like it, there always that backup you can restore. Too easy to sit around and complain when there are alternatives
I'm always finding things that don't work on custom kernels and it drives me insane!! I'll try to show someone something cool, and it takes me 15 minutes just to get it working, then I just look stupid because the rom I have isn't compatible with ___, or it's missing ___ (fill in the blank)
Yeah, they are fun to play with, and it's nice to have the cool mods & tweaks that come with them, but when you want your phone to "just work" then there's nothing better than a nice stable official rom that does everything you throw at it. speed & extra performance is great, but stability and compatibility outweigh those every single time, imho

I can't help but agree that ota is most stable But I feel the same way as you. Stability first. Yet I myself am not suffering from any issue. I find my self surround by multiple galaxy nexus owners daily and I am showing them stuff w my oG. Vice versa, just throwing it out there. I have been lucky when I have been flashing phones, many many manyphones hahaha. They all take well to me. I hate a screwed up glitchy phone

Any reason to root?

For the first time in owning an android device I'm asking this question. When I got my Captivate, Samsung and AT&T were jerking us around with our Froyo update, and it was about 4 months outdated already, so I rooted to put Froyo on, and later I put CM7 on it, as well as a million other roms lol. My Flyer I rooted so I could put faster roms, and ICS as it was on honeycomb and laggy, and my Vivid I rooted because sense made ICS look like gingerbread way too much and I wanted to tweak with the UI so Sense wasn't so intrusive.
But the Nexus had only one thing I didn't like, and that was the phone launcher, and I was able to fix that by just installing Apex. Now its pretty much perfect. No stupid Sense or Touchwiz skins ruining it, no bloatware, and its completley up to date at 4.1.1. So can someone give me a good reason to root? Not a bad problem to have lol,

You seem to be confusing rooting with custom recovery/system/kernel. Rooting has many benefits giving you greater system access and root apps. I won't go into detail because a Google search can tell you more.

Any reason to ask this question in a new thread? You've already answered your own question.
I had the exact same feelings as you...after 7 Android devices, this is the first time I had no desire to unlock/root/flash my new toy.
Feeling that the N7 was set up beautifully, the ONLY reason I had to root was for the REAL TABLET UI. Using a custom launcher with rotate enabled is not true tablet mode. I figured I'd try it, since my N7 would be rooted eventually anyway.
So that's a good reason...true tablet mode.
Yeah I actually kind of like the hybrid mode, I kept bumping the virtual buttons with my fingers on the Flyer while I was typing or gaming.
But I just was curious as to why people were rooting, made the thread for suggestions more than anything lol

also, if keeping the stock rom/launcher, you need root to edit the build.prop file so that you can have autorotate on the home screen.

[Q] Who else would love a Sense port ROM?

Before I say anything, Devs please do not see this as a request or as demanding in ANY way. You all do fantastic work and really make this device shine. Anyways... I was wondering if anyone else wishes there was a Sense based port. With the DNA being so close relativity in specs, I am sort of surprised there has not been any talk of a port. This is simply to see who else would like to see a port and if there is any interest in one. I am absolutley not a developer and could not create a ROM to save my life, I'm just a lowly power user lol.
I would much rather have Sense 5(when it comes out) since it's newer and looks cleaner.
No way. Honestly, no offense but if you like Sense then you should have gotten an HTC device.
I also disagree about it being cleaner. Stock a android is just beautiful.

I would also like to see a sense rom, it would be cool to be able to have one phone that could run any ui. We already have Motorola blur, why not HTC sense, and touchwiz. If you don't like it you don't have to flash it. I love the nexus line of hardware and aosp, but for flashaholics like me, the more ROMs available the better off I am. I wish I could build ROMs but I don't even know where to start. I would definitely donate to any dev that could build a stable sense ROM.

I don't have the time to learn how to build ROMs. My wife stays on my case as it is, and all I do is flash a ROM and set it up the way I want it. I go to work to make money so I can pay someone to do all the things that I don't want to do and the things I don't know how to do. I have one set of skills and you probably have a different set of skills in your line of work. I don't know anybody who knows how to do everything. This is why I said that I would donate to a dev who comes up with a sense ROM.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I came from the HTC G2, the stock android version of the Desire Z (codename: Vision). Basically, in my opinion at least, any Sense ROM that was not a kang of a ROM shipped by HTC for the Vision has a bunch of bugs and oddities and things that just don't work nicely. And the Vision has one the best developers community that I have seen around. You still get CM 10.1 nightlies uover there even as the last update from HTC was GB back in 2010.
So... while I support having choices, thus would welcome any Sense ROM for the N4, I actually don't think it's a good idea to try.
Sent from my Nexus 4 in a Faraday cage
I would like to try Sense 5. I wouldn't use it as my daily driver. But I'm definitely not opposed to having more options.
I bought this phone so that I could escape things like Sense and Touchwiz... It would seem counterproductive to me to put it on this phone?

And I bought it for the amazing Dev community. The great thing about a ROM is you can choose not to flash it. Isn't it better to have the option?

I would love to contribute but I'm a student and don't have a credit card... Therefore no PayPal. Stupid teenager problems!

Maybe, wait for sense 5 it's going to be much lighter than before, it might be easier to port.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Sense is a GIANT turd. It's the main reason I got rid of my One X+.
I found sense to actually be pretty good on the one x after ripping all the crap out. Heck I'd be happy just to have the sense camera. Half the people crying probably haven't even tried it.
